| Personal Description: I am a 22 year old Mathematics Graduate, currently living in the York area. I believe learning is one of the most important parts of life and I thoroughly enjoy tutoring others and helping them with their learning. I am confident in tutoring my chosen subject of Mathematics and aim to improve others Mathematics skills. |
Teaching Experience: I believe I can help those struggling with Mathematics work of any kind and enjoy being given the opportunity to do so. I am currently tutoring numerous tutees from Key Stage 2 up to A level with ages ranging from 12 to 34 years of age, mostly teaching GCSE and A-level (Core and Statistics). Here, I have learnt to adapt my teaching methods to the individual and have a wide range of experience with different abilities. In my last term at University, I chose to undertake a module entitled 'Mathematics in the Classroom' where I began observing two teachers and ended up teaching Statistic to an A-level class of Mathematics students. This experience developed my confidence in teaching and I learnt a great deal about how to communicate Mathematics to a group of students. During my 3 years at University, I tutored basic Key Stage 2 skills (Maths, English and Science) once a week for 2 hours. I set homework and marked it, often going through the homework with the student in the lessons. At the end of my time with this student, not only did I witness improvements in her ability and awareness, I noticed that it helped her with her school work each week. In previous years, I have volunteered in related areas: working with special needs children (aged 3 - 18), working with a group of children in after school hours (aged 5 - 11); Funfishers, and spent time in primary schools helping out where necessary. |
Tutoring Approach: With my current tutoring, I work with different ages, abilities and people. I adapt my methods and teaching to each individual. However, I set all my students homework to be completed by our next lesson as keeping up with Mathematics is all about putting in the practice of what is learnt in the lesson. Progress is made with all my students and their confidence regarding Mathematics has been greatly improved. I aim to set targets for the student to achieve by the following lesson and concentrate on where the student struggles. I like to encourage asking questions and aim to pass on my knowledge and confidence in the Mathematical area. |

| Personal Description: I am a warm and friendly person and enjoy making my lessons fun and interesting. I like to get to know my students and want to make sure I can relate to them by using relevant resources and materials. I am passionate about the subjects I teach and have spent a lot of time creating lessons that can help each student to progress. I am always open to suggestions on how to make my lessons better and want to help each person achieve their goals. |
Teaching Experience: I have a PGCE and over five years teaching experience. I have taught in both France and Germany and at language schools in the UK. In France I was a teaching assistant to students in primary, junior and secondary schools. In Germany I worked for a business school and taught English to adults. I have worked with adults from Libya and Saudi Arabia, teaching them English. I currently teach literacy and numeracy to post 16 year old in Manchester. I enjoy meeting new and different people and I like creating lessons that can motivate and encourage learners. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe it is vital that the student gets exactly what they want from their lesson. There is no point teaching information if the material is not relevant to the learner. I have sat in classrooms myself and not been motivated! I therefore always talk to my learners at the beginning of a course, find out what they want from the lessons, before I then plan the content. Constant reviewing in lessons is critical in making sure the student is developing and I always get feedback from the learner to make sure I am doing my job properly. |

| Personal Description: I'm 24 years old and graduated from Imperial College London in 2007, where I studied for a Masters in Physics and obtained First Class Honours. I then went on to work as an Actuary at Deloitte for a year, passing all 5 of my exams first time. I am now in my second year at Cambridge University studying for a PhD in Astrophysics (Theoretical Cosmology). |
Teaching Experience: Since joining the University of Cambridge I have worked as a demonstrator in undergraduate first year labs. My role has been to guide students through their experiments, helping both with the practical and the theoretical side of their work and teaching them how to keep a good lab look. I have also taught first year Maths at the University to multiple pairs of students, and I am now a supervisor in for this. The work is advanced but, because I myself am pursuing a heavily mathematical PhD, I am still very much in touch with the work and comfortable with it. In both roles I have regularly set and marked homework. At the other end of the spectrum I have also tutored year 6 to year 9 pupils, mainly in Science and Mathematics but also extending over other subjects. They have all shown a marked improvement in their work, topping the class in Maths and obtaining places at schools for which they had to take entrance exams. |
Tutoring Approach: Rather than teaching general concepts, I aim to focus my tutoring sessions around what my students have highlighted as tougher areas for them. I aim to make each session into more like a discussion so that a softer tutor-tutee relationship forms and the tutees feel comfortable asking any questions. I feel it is important to talk about the work interactively, as it helps tutees to understand what is happening and straighten things out in their minds. They must learn also how to explain concepts or solve problems on paper, so I will always try to get my tutees to work on actual questions during the sessions, with my help. I will offer guidance on which questions I think they should work on between sessions so that they can practise, and encourage them to work on actual exam questions as early as possible. As a longer-term aim, I hope to instill confidence into my tutees so that they don't doubt their abilities, and improve their exam technique. In the end I want to be able to bring tutees' actual exam grades up from their predicted scores. |

| Personal Description: I am 46 years old. I currently work as cover supervisor in a secondary school. Previously I have worked as a Chartered Certified Accountant both within my own practice and in the Finance departments of large multinational companies mainly within the construction industry. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently a Cover Supervisor in a secondary school, covering lessons in all subjects and at all levels. I have been a student on a PGCE Secondary Mathematics Course, my aims is to return to this course over the next few years and qualify as a teacher of Mathematics in a secondary school. |
Tutoring Approach: I am an approachable and patient tutor. Although, I am now a Mathematics specialist that wasn't always the case. I found the subject difficult at school and therefore feel that I understand students who are also struggling with Mathematics. I developed my Mathematical knowledge from working in industry and using Mathematical techniques to solve real business problems. My approach therefore looks for practical applications of Mathematics to demonstrate to the student how Mathematics can be useful in everyday life and future employment. |
