Personal Description:
I am 53, with a B.Sc. in theoretical physics and an M.Sc. in quantum field theory (with some astrophysics), both from Imperial College, London. I have spent some years working in IT, but maths and physics are the subjects I love, and I enjoy teaching them. I'm familiar with all mathematics (including further maths) and physics to beyond A level standard and theoretical physics to university graduate level.

Teaching Experience:

I also teach chess at a school.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is to teach the concepts clearly. Once the student has
the fundamental concepts straight then academic attainment follows naturally.

Many pupils struggle with maths and physics because of poor explanations
of the concepts involved. Schools often rely on rote memorisation and cramming, as
alternative to understanding. My approach is to explain the derivation of
material. A successful technique is to work through the pupil's choice of homework
or revision problem exercises or past exam papers, showing how each exercise can
be solved. This way the tutoring is targeted at exactly those areas that require
help and is also most directly relevant to achieving exam success.

All curricula and exam boards covered.

Personal Description:
I recently graduated from Oxford University, with a masters (Meng) in engineering science. I took my A levels in 2007 in Physics, Maths, Further maths and Economics, achieving grade A in all. I am very familiar with the sort of study patterns and techniques that are required by students in their preperation for these exams. I am friendly, helpful and very patient when it comes to teaching on a one to one basis.

Teaching Experience:

I was involved with the mentoring scheme that my college offered. This involved me having to meet with individual students in order to help and advise them with their school work. This experience helped me become more aware of the different methods and approaches needed for individual students. I also have two younger brothers studying for their GCSE's/A-levels who I regularly help out with their academic work.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to break down the topic into small managable chunks and to take the student step by step through the material. I am focused with teaching the student key exam techniques and vital steps that are needed in preperation for them. I am focused with covering material in a thorough but efficient way, as well as making use of exam past papers which hold the key to breaking down nervousness and exam fright.

Personal Description:
I began tutoring during my Philosophy of Science MSc at the London School of Economics. Subsequently I decided to pursue a career in science and began to train as a geologist at Birkbeck College, University of London in a 4-year degree program while continuing to work as a tutor. Over the course of the last 3 years my teaching career gained momentum and I made the decision to pause my second degree to focus on teaching.

Teaching Experience:

Since graduating I have gained thousands of hours of tutoring experience over a period of 4 years. While I specialise in teaching maths at 11+, 13+ and GCSE level, I also have a wealth of experience in teaching sciences (13+, GCSE), maths (A-level), English (11+, 13+, GCSE, A-level) and philosophy (A-level and degree level). Alongside my independent work I am a senior tutor at three high end London tuition agencies.*

I have successfully prepared students for entry into a wide range of schools including Bancroft, Channing, City of London, Eton, Forest, Francis Holland, Godolphin and Latymer School, Haberdashers', Highgate, North London Collegiate School, Queen's College, Sevenoaks, South Hampstead, St. Paul's and UCS.

I have worked as an assessor for a London tuition agency since 2010. I conduct assessments which potential tutors must pass before they are allowed to work for the agency. Assessing other tutors has given me excellent insights as to how to improve my own teaching.

*I am not permitted to name these here, but I can provide references once contact details are exchanged.

Tutoring Approach:

The key to my approach is keeping the student's mind as active as possible. My lessons are extremely questions-based and seek to guide a student to explore concepts rather than merely deposit information. Since this approach requires more engagement from the pupil, the material is better retained and more thoroughly understood.

I find the science of memory fascinating and have carefully researched and tested various memory techniques that I now find invaluable during my lessons. The luxury of one-to-one tuition is that each lesson can be perfectly tailored to the individual student. Over the first few sessions, I determine how the pupil best absorbs information and what teaching style they find the most engaging. The result is highly efficient learning which generally manages to be good fun as well.

Outside of classes I am happy to answer emailed questions and to mark small amounts of homework free of charge. Detailed proof reading and feedback for coursework assignments for those I do not regularly teach is charged at my hourly rate. Group sessions are available the charge is 50% of the normal fee for each additional student.

Personal Description:
Although I now have a PGCE in mathematics I have been lucky enough to get the chance to apply my skills in maths and physics whilst working as an engineer in the automotive and white goods industries. It gave me the opportunity to travel abroad and to get involved with companies such as Dyson, Jaguar, Austin Martin and then even allowed me to watch rockets being built in Russia.
I trained engineers and factory workers in the use of mathematical and physics based subjects. Some of those I taught had jobs which involved predominantly manual skills and so they were a little rusty when applying mathematical techniques. This makes me appreciate the nervousness some adults have when presented with a subject they may not have touched since leaving school.
After leaving the engineering world I had a brief spell working as a trainer in the insurance arena and then finally ended up teaching mathematics in secondary schools.

Teaching Experience:

I worked as a manufacturing engineer for 8 years and then I taught engineers and factory workers for 10 years in the use of techniques involving mathematics and physics. After leaving the engineering world I trained adults to use a mainframe software program and then I went on to become a secondary school mathematics teacher. Finally I started tutoring from home working with various types of pupils. Some pupils have special needs, whilst others are working towards an A grade in their A levels.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to know why the tutee wishes to study. It may be to improve their confidence or to pass an exam. This will then shape the nature of the tutoring sessions. My focus is to provide people with the knowledge that is most useful to them and their aspirations.

Personal Description:
I am currently reading Classics at the University of Liverpool and live in West Kirby. My tutoring experience has been built upon earlier experience of classroom and individual teaching in Schools (both Primary and Secondary), which I have now returned to alongside tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

September 2013 to present: teaching a GCSE Classical Greek course.
July 2013 to present: tutoring English, Maths and Latin.
September 2011 to June 2012: taught an introductory Latin Course at a local Primary School.
September 2010 to July 2012: taught an introductory Classical Greek course & mentored several students in Latin.

Tutoring Approach:

Maths: As teaching in schools is very often rushed and group-focused, many students are left with gaps in their knowledge, so by covering the theory behind certain methods and explaining problems in a simple way, I try to remedy this. 'Practice makes perfect' is especially true for this subject and so, for the GCSE student, I spend a large part of the lesson focusing on past papers and put the theory to practice.

English: As well as ensuring that the student knows the set poetry & prose for their exam, I like to introduce reading of something new at the start of each lesson, in preparation for the unseen section of the exam. I believe this is also important, as it helps the student to appreciate areas of the literary canon outside of their exam, and at the same time to develop a 'feel' for the discussion of noteworthy elements in a text. In terms of English Language, points of rhetoric and oratory are discussed and practised in exercises of composing speeches, articles, etc. as will be found in their exam. For the advanced student, intertextual links between their set texts are discussed and a lot of time is spent in oral essay-practice.

Latin & Greek: I have found that the best way of getting to grips with the language is through reading, so I let the student read the sentence out in Latin/Greek, then systematically work through, picking out the words in the order that they should be translated. By following this method, it allows for the practical discussion of grammatical constructions and vocabulary, which are much more rapidly absorbed through reading instead of learning tables of words. The aim of this method is for students to be able to read a text at the required level with reasonable fluency and to develop their confidence in translating unfamiliar words and phrases.

Personal Description:
Hi, my name is Mitul. I teach Mathematics on a one-to-one basis to students at different levels. I have a BSc in Mathematics from Imperial College, London and an MSc in Financial Mathematics from the University of Warwick.

Teaching Experience:

I have over five years of private tutoring experience in Maths.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to establish what the student knows and needs during the sessions, building upon their existing knowledge and closing gaps. My approach typically involves working with pupils on their weaker topics, giving them confidence to work progressively through text book questions and then past papers. I try to break problems down into manageable chunks and explain those parts that do not make sense in more detail, using my communication skills to pass on my subject knowledge.

An integral part of the sessions and the student progression is the completion of weekly homework. Whilst I may not ask for specific questions or exercises to be completed each week, feedback from the follow-up work is crucial in ensuring that progress is continually being made.

Personal Description:
I am a passionate and committed physicist with teaching experience at the 11-18 level. My enthusiasm for the subject is infectious and my goal is not simply to teach to exam papers (which is necessary at times), but rather to stimulate genuine excitement and curiosity in the subject; I want all my tutees to both enjoy physics and get the best grades possible for them! In addition to teaching Physics, I also offer tutoring in Mathematics. My physics training has given me a very strong grounding in the subject, and I spend leisure time improving my skills in this area.

Academically, I hold a Masters in Experimental Physics with First Class Honours from the University of York. In addition, I won the Masters Project prize for my final year research project. I will be studying at Imperial College from October on their MSc in Quantum Fields and Fundamental Forces course. with a view to studying for a PhD in theoretical physics.

In my free time, aside from physics, I enjoy playing drums, singing, reading and keeping fit.I tend to have a common interest with most people.

Teaching Experience:

I enrolled on a PGCE course last year but quickly found that I was desperately missing academic study. As a result I recently terminated my course registration and signed up to Imperial College for the next academic year. My time on the PGCE has provided me with a valuable 6 months teaching experience across a wide spectrum of abilities.

Tutoring Approach:

For an individual to perform at their maximum potential in any given academic discipline, they must first appreciate why they are studying the subject, and secondly they must learn to enjoy the subject. My first aim in tutoring Maths and Physic is to address these points by using real world examples.

My approach to tutoring Physics is to view the subject as a whole rather than a collection of separate topics. In this way, students quickly develop mastery of the basics allowing them to be literate enough in the subject to explore with some independence. I also enjoy employing reductive approaches where appropriate (depending on students ability and age), so that students develop a deep understanding of the topics which they are studying and not just superficial knowledge which is quickly forgotten.

In both Maths and Physics, problem solving is of vital importance, and so I have a strong focus on this mainly through self study exercises. It is of paramount importance that students are committed enough to undertake these exercises, as it is only through practice that true understanding will be obtained. In addition, in order to achieve good exam grades, exam question practice is a must.

Personal Description:
I am currently at Wallington County Grammar School. I feel that I am a warm and understanding person which is in my opinion what makes me a great teacher. My previous experience with teaching and care work has allowed me to communicate with clarity and fluency; another quality of a good teacher.

Teaching Experience:

In the academic field I am experienced having taught as a private tutor for over a year. Many of my previous students are GCSE students looking to improve their grades from a previous attempt which has allowed me to become quite familiar with a variety of exam boards; both higher and foundation tier. These students are mainly secondary school students. I have some experience with adult learners, but I only teach up to GCSE standard.

Tutoring Approach:

When teaching I prefer to guide the students in their learning as opposed to lecturing the bare-bone facts needed for examination. This from experience has been much more enjoyable for the student which of course leads to better learning and better results.

Personal Description:
I left the RAF in 2004 where I had been an Aircraft Electrical Engineer. During my service I studied with the Open University to gain my degree. I had spent a number years as an instructor in the RAF so becoming a teacher seemed an good choice for a new career when I left.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a secondary maths teacher for 8 years. My first school went from Special Measures to Outstanding in the 4 years I was there; with my year 9 class obtaining the highest SATs levels the school had ever had. My last school has had an 80% A* to C pass rate for maths GCSE for the last 10 years. I have the knowledge and experience to help students obtain or exceed their target grade.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe building confidence and overcoming the 'maths is hard mentality' is key to students progressing and exceeding their targets.
