| Personal Description: I graduated from university in 2006 and then went straight to Rome to do my TEFL course, which then led to me being offered a job in Rome straight after the course. I am very patience and understanding of the pressure to learn a new language as i found whilst in Rome. I am also in the process of learning German so i fully sympathise on how difficult it is to learn a new language. I am very fun-loving and i immensely enjoy teaching English, i feel very passionately towards it and i love to really help people to achieve their goals with the language. I am quite active and i love to travel and play many sports, but i also love to unwind with a good book. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught in Rome for 7 months at Wall Street Institute () where i taught business English and general English mainly to adults. I have taught at a summer camp where i was teaching English to children aged 12-17. |
Tutoring Approach: I am a very patient and conscientious teacher, where i can fully understand that learning a language is hard. I have a very open minded approach to teaching and i feel strongly that the best way to learn is through practice and talking, talking, talking. I teach a language with different games and scenarios where i feel this is the best way to practice it as you get a lot of talking done and i also teach grammar in a subtle but effective way. I feel a tutor should be someone who can lead and guide you in the right direction but ultimately you have to put in the work too, i think of myself as more a facilitator than a pushy hard teacher. |

| Personal Description: Having always loved books, reading, and performing, I graduated in 2005 with a 2:1 degree in English Literature from the University of Hull (the first year of which was joint English and Drama). Having travelled around the world, I am now hoping to start my teacher training in September 2010, currently working as a supply teaching assistant in schools in and around Cardiff. |
Teaching Experience: As well as voluntary teaching in Belize and Sri Lanka, I recently returned from South Korea, where I lived for a year whilst teaching English as a foreign language to children from ages 2 to 15. I also tutored both adults and children on a one on one basis. I also co-coordinated the Hay Literary Festival children's tent in 2009 with a friend, and have been asked to return this year. Lots of arts and crafts based around a different theme or book each day - making minibeasts out of recycling for our Very Hungry Caterpillar day was great fun! |
Tutoring Approach: It is difficult to learn if you do not feel comfortable expressing your ideas and opinions, or are bored by the subject matter. I aim to encourage tutees to gain confidence both in the texts they study and in their own ideas, be it an English poem or a monologue they must perform, in a warm and friendly environment with plenty of discussion and at a pace suited to them. My time teaching in Korea has taught me that a sense of humour is vital in teaching, whilst still maintaining a sense of structure so important to a learning environment. For younger children, this is coupled with learning through creative means, craft, art and games, though how big an input this has can be adapted to the child and parents' individual needs. I suggest an initial meeting between myself and a potential tutee (and any parents if relevant) prior to any actual teaching to discuss the anticipated outcome of tutoring sessions and to get a clear idea of what we expect from one another. This ensures that targets are set early on, giving the tutee realistic goals to work towards, and also that everyone involved is happy both with these targets and also with each other! It is up to the individual whether or not they want to be given work in between sessions - whilst I do expect input, enthusiasm and commitment during tutorials, I am by no means a slave driver! |

| Personal Description: I am currently studying politics and psychology at university degree level. However i have achieved an A at higher and/or first year university level for art, modern studies, politics, sociology, and psychology, and can teach children / adolescents up to the first year university level. I am an easy-going, highly organised patient individual, and I enjoy the challenge of teaching students how to understand, and enjoy certain subjects! |
Teaching Experience: I have teaching experience with small groups of primary aged children, mainly at reading and language skills. However, I do volunteer at a local youth club where I interact with around thirty 10-17 year old children on a weekly basis. During these sessions I receive many academic and real life problems/situations that I help solve. I also participate with study groups at university, where I work as a team to tackle problems relating to coursework! |
Tutoring Approach: My first lesson will be free of charge. In this time I will talk with the parent (of children at school level) and pupil, discussing problematic areas of coursework. Parents or pupils will then let me know how many lessons they are looking for, what they want to achieve etc. I will then make up a mock timetable, marking out what I want to achieve in each lesson. My lessons will depend on each subject. My lesson will roughly follow as (dependent on subject); 1. I will give student back mark from 'test', and we will discuss, work out wrongly done questions. 2. I will give explanation of problem area, with real life simple examples, and examples from textbooks. 3. Students can ask me any questions. 4. Students will do small test on what has been taught. This will illustrate to me whether the student has grasped what I have taught them, and allow me to mark it for our next section, beginning our next section on what they have got wrong. Students will also receive photocopies of relevant book chapters / exam papers / study tips etc. Each session will last for an hour, and will be priced at 10ph. |
