Personal Description:
I think i am able to inspire and make the lessons instructive but also fun. I think variety of pace and changes in activity ensure good progress and keep students attentive and motivated. Lots of positive encouragement and feedback on a regular basis and students should also be encouraged to feedback on their own learning and any difficulties they may have. I think I have a good sense of humour and this helps me to keep the lesson dynamic and lively and make the lessons memorable.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught over the last 27 years and my teaching has included several subjects: English as a foreign language and English (including English as a foreign language) and I have also taught primary Maths and the piano up to grade 4 . I have taught History and French at all levels and Geography and Biology up to National 5 level ( lower level) I have also taught art and design up to university level and currently provide art classes for children in my home every week.

Tutoring Approach:

I think learning takes place when students feel free to give it a go and make mistakes without any fear of negative remarks from the teacher. Good teaching is about establishing a relationship of trust with the student and customising the lessons to the needs of the pupil. A sense of humour is essential to help overcome obstacles and keep a positive atmosphere. Students should be encouraged to give regular feedback about the lessons. They should be encouraged to teach back to the teacher to demonstrate understanding and proper grading of the work should increasingly develop the students' confidence. Lessons are well organised in advance but also allow for flexibility in approach to individual students

Personal Description:
After leaving school, I studied at Nottingham University for a BA in Music, then for a MA in Theology from the London School of Theology. Having worked for a while at an inner-city secondary school, I went on to complete a research masters and am currently studying for a PhD. My own interests are principally in theology, philosophy and politics, but also the arts, culture and social work. I am married, have two children, and am a keen football fan (Manchester United).

Teaching Experience:

I have taught Religious Studies at secondary school and I have also worked as a freelance tutor at various points over several years for students studying Philosophy and Ethics, History, English and Music at a range of levels.

I have worked with extremely bright students but also have a lot of experience of working with students with special educational needs.

Tutoring Approach:

Education is about more than being able to pass exams, although this is obviously important! I have worked hard for my qualifications and belive in disciplined, productive study; however for some students getting the highest possible grade is not necessarily the most important thing. Each person is an individual with different strengths and weaknesses, so I try to structure how I teach around individual needs and goals. When teaching I also believe that giving people self confidence, an ability to think critically and an enjoyment of the subject is an important part of helping them to improve.

APPROACH TO TUITION

Tailoring tuition to suit the student
The advantage of one-to-one tuition is that I can assess what specific needs a student has, and organise my lessons around those needs. Some students need essay technique help some have a specific set of topics they want to go over others might need an entire course taught to them as they have left school or are being home educated.

Knowing the syllabus
All GCSEs and A Levels follow a national syllabus, and I know them all very well. In my first lesson with any student I will make sure they are aware of the overall requirements of the syllabus, on a topic-by-topic basis. I will always stick to what the student needs to know to pass that particular syllabus I do not needlessly make students learn things they do not need to know.

Digital handouts
In my years of tuition, I have built up a cloud-based digital archive of hundreds of handouts. Say a student is learning about arguments for the existence of God for RS A Level - I have handouts very clearly outlining the Ontological, Teleological and Cosmological arguments and all relevant criticisms. These handouts are a great extra help alongside my teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have thousands of hours of tuition experience, having taught hundreds of students. I have dozens of letters of recommendation. Some of the specific subjects I have taught include:

Government & Politics (Edexcel and OCR)
Cambridge Pre-U Theology & Philosophy
Philosophy A Level (AQA, OCR and Edexcel)
Religious Studies (OCR, AQA and Edexcel) GCSE, A Level
Sociology (AQA) AS and A2
Theology and Religious Studies at degree level (I have helped six different students receive good grades for third year RS dissertations)
Oxbridge applications and interview practice

I have a written reference from a doctor of Philosophy and college chaplain at Cambridge University, as well as an excellent reference from my full-time tutoring placement for the last year.

Extracts from letters of recommendation (all available in full on request):

"Incredibly reliable and professional...James' superior knowledge and passion for his subject resulted in my son gaining both in confidence and ability and led him to succeed in achieving a Distinction grade when his school had predicted a Merit."
Mother of Pre-U student, 2013.

"James's enthusiasm, attention to detail and ability to make the lessons interesting and absorbing has paid off...I cannot recommend James highly enough. He is punctual and thoughtful and I would not hesitate to hire him again in the future."
Mother of homeschooled A2 candidate taught full time for a year in History (Edexcel), Sociology (AQA) and Religious Studies (Edexcel), 2011/12.

"A great source of help to my daughter over the past two years; making smooth preparations for her to retake her AS level, alongside her continuing work towards her A level. He contributed invaluably towards her outstanding AS level pass mark of 100% . For her A2, Olivia received an A."
Mother of Philosophy A Level (AQA) Candidate, 2012/13.

"James was an excellent tutor. He explained complex ideas clearly and tailored his tutoring to suit my son. Importantly, he acted as a strong motivator and made sure rigourous revision notes were made... humourous, friendly and a good natured motivator. My son received an A*".
Mother of GCSE Religious Studies student (OCR), 2012/13.

"He immediately established a very good working relationship with my daughter which encouraged her to really engage with the subject and plan and think about the topics in depth. He helped her with the structure of her essays and how to build up a coherent and well thought out argument...I would highly recommend James as a Philosophy tutor."
Mother of Religious Studies (OCR) student, 2012/13.

"Jame's enthusiasm, attention to detail and ability to make the lessons interesting and absorbing has paid off...I cannot recommend Jame's highly enough. He is punctual and thoughtful and I would not hesitate to hire him again in the future."
Mother of homeschooled A2 candidate taught full time for a year in History (Edexcel), Sociology (AQA) and Religious Studies (Edexcel), 2011/12.

"James was very familiar with the curriculum and both his discussions with my son and the work set were of an appropriate and challenging level, set work was always marked and discussed at the following tutorial. My son received a good Distinction in his exams."
Mother of Pre-U Philosophy & Theology student (Cambridge), 2013.

"My daughter was unable to attend school due to illness, and so James was entirely responsible for her preparation. She received a Distinction in her exams. James was a diligent tutor, who managed to convey this difficult subject with a lightness of touch. I know that my daughter enjoyed her lessons enormously, and that she found it easy to learn from James. He not only imparted the necessary knowledge but also inspired her with confidence."
Mother of homeschooled Pre-U Philosophy & Theology student (Cambridge), who I taught the entire syllabus to in 2012/13.

"James was brilliant. Despite tutoring my two twin daughters at the same time, he adapted his teaching style to suit both of them differently. He made the whole course much easier for them to understand than they had found at school. Beyond this, he boosted their confidence and increased their essay writing skills. He provided a large amount of digital handouts which they also found useful. Both girls ended up with very high As in all the topics he taught them in."
Mother of twin daughters taught in Religious Studies (OCR) and Philosophy (AQA), 2012/13.

"...James covered far more content than the school had taught in a whole year and to a greater depth and understanding. His knowledge of the syllabus and ability to explain complex philosophical arguments and content, in a way that my daughter could understand, was second to none... put back a confidence in my daughter that had been partly destroyed in this subject due to poor teaching at school. I have never seen my daughter so relaxed and happy after taking an exam than she was after re-taking these two."
Mother of homeschooled candidate in Religious Studies (Edexcel), 2012/13.

Personal Description:
I am a former Academic Advisor to students in the United States of America, and I have worked for two tutoring companies in Oxford since returning to the UK. I currently tutor 6 A-level students, 1 GCSE student, and two University students. Of those, I tutor 2 by skype. I focus on technique over content with a particular emphasis on writing skills.

Teaching Experience:

Award winning teacher at the University of Georgia, 1999-2000
Academic Adviser to University Students from 2003-2007
Tutor Oxford International Study Centre, April 2013 - May 2014
Carfax Tutorial Establishment, November 2013 - May 2014
Freelance Tutor ongoing.

Tutoring Approach:

I adopt a holistic approach to tutoring, working with a student to address her or his individual academic needs. I am process-orientated, building on a student's strengths and eliminating weaknesses. I am also highly practical, constantly working towards the student's objectives. As a result, I focus very much on academic skills and developing the student's academic toolbox, so that they can gain confidence and become independent learners.

Personal Description:
I aim to support each individual in achieving his or her full potential, and have received regular feedback that I have an approachable style which empowers students and puts them at their ease. I have been a specialist in English Language skills, particularly English for Academic Purposes, for a number of years, via Skype, email and face to face tuition. I play violin and sing regularly, and have been an orchestral and chamber musician for thirty five years.

I have supported various students in their preparation for GCSEs in all three sciences, together with A levels in English and Psychology. In addition, I provide support for a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Linguistics, but more generally in academic writing at degree level for all subjects.

In addition to my degree/masters subjects and my PGCE, I also have Level 3 (A level equivalent) Diplomas in Psychology and General Science, together with Level 4 in Advanced Anatomy and Physiology and Level 5 in CBT plus Level 5 Diploma in Life Coaching and Counselling.

Teaching Experience:

I have thirty years' experience as a qualified teacher, of which I spent 15 years in leadership positions in schools, including two head ships in England and Scotland. I teach English for Academic Purposes to both overseas and home students, support preparation for public exams in Music, English, Science and Psychology and have a range of violin and singing pupils. In addition, I prepare students for IELTs, PTEG/PTE Academic, for which I am an examiner, and FCE/CPE.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to tailor my approach to meet the needs of each individual student. Lessons are a mixture of interactive and instructional, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions in a stress- free environment. I use electronic resources to support my teaching and will mark and instruct via online instructional methods where required to do so.

For exam preparation I am familiar with Edexcel, AQA, OCR and Cambridge exam boards, and have experience preparing A level students for AQA A2 Psychology, together with Edexcel and AQA English/English Literature.

Personal Description:
I am Philosophy Graduate with a passion for ideas and critical thinking. I have written articles for a variety of blogs and delivered lectures to an academic audience.

In the past I have also worked in as a freelance musician and an IT technician.

Everything I do is influenced by my passion for ideas and my desire to convey them to others, a conscientious work ethic and lively sense of humour.

Teaching Experience:

Although this is my first foray into academic tutoring, I have previously taught Judo at senior and junior levels. In addition, I have been responsible for helping people improve their IT skills when I worked for The Department For Work and Pensions.

Tutoring Approach:

I try to meet every individual where they are in their journey of learning, rather than impose preconceived ideas on them. I try and find out how each student learns and in light of this tailor my teaching to fit them.

I always try to keep things fun and interesting as people achieve more when they are engaged an excited. I avoid pointless jargon and needless technicality.

Personal Description:
I am a University graduate with a first class degree in Politics from Northumbria University. I completed a very well-received dissertation on the subject of citizenship in America. I plan on beginning a Master's degree in Political Theory at the University of Manchester in the next academic year.

Teaching Experience:

While taking my A levels I was a prefect, and my duties included helping English students in years seven and eight with their work. My Politics A level was self-taught with two other students. While at University I have served on the committee of the Debating society, where aside from helping students express their ideas, the training also often involved providing concise explanations of current events and related political theories.
I have worked with the veteran's charity Forward Assist, teaching political understanding and general knowledge to veterans to help them in civilian life.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring is tailored according to the student's needs - whether these are to gain a broad understanding of a subject, prepare for a specific assessment in a particular area, or to develop skills applicable to many subject areas.

Personal Description:
I am a 23 year old recent Undergraduate in BSc (Hons) Psychology, currently undertaking an MSc in Family & Child Psychology. Helping the youth has always been an integral part of my life, for example I have volunteered immensely in mentoring students and guiding them towards academic success as well as personal development. I can help with coursework and revision on a variety of subjects, but my expertise is Psychology. Professionally, I am an editor thus am able to proofread, edit and advise on work for greater coherence. Students can expect a high quality service and a friendly approach from me as I like to engage with people, help them to organise, plan and practice. Those with special needs such as dyslexia and Autism can also reach out for help with academic or study skills related support, I would like to say that I have completed a Mental Health course as well as worked with Dyslexic and Autistic young adults which has boosted my knowledge on the barriers faced by such groups of people.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored students for over 4 years, with coursework help and guidance. I am a student myself thus am fully aware of the type of support students require, with a strong will in answering queries so please don't hesitate to ask.

Tutoring Approach:

I provide a friendly and approachable style for students, I can easily connect with you all as I nurture a passion for people. My availability is vast even on short notice, mainly due to the fact that I sympathise with students who often require assistance at late hours of the day such as night time when they may panic. Thus I am here to help calm those nerves and provide support. Students can thus be assure of a prompt reply from me as I keep a close eye on my email/texts, I fully understand that when students need help they often get disappointed as no one answers their queries at odd hours. I have kept my hourly rate fairly low as I'm aware that students are short of funds and so would not like to make support expensive for them, knowledge and expertise should not be made difficult for students than it already is.

Personal Description:
Hello!

I have a vast knowledge regarding art practices as I have been working in a studio as an artist and in a few galleries in London and Paris.
However, I have chosen to write rather than practice. After a BA in Art History and Fine Art, I have specialised in Contemporary Art Theory because it is for me primordial to consider art within its context. I have studied sociology, philosophy and geopolitics during my Master.

Moreover, I was until recently a Gallery Manager for an art collector who was hosting private salons and exhibitions. I have left this position to make a greater use of my knowledge. I am currently looking for my next step in either art and cultural programming or documentary production. I am working on various projects in those two fields and recently funded an art collective called Agora Circle.

Lastly, I will be doing a PhD in visual culture in the coming years.

Teaching Experience:

4 years

I usually work with a maximum of five children and ten adults and have some experience in 1-1 tutoring.

Tutoring Approach:

I would create a structure that empowers you by assessing your level during the first introductory session. This will take the form of a discussion on your interests, methodology and needs.

Regarding younger students, I follow the parents' requests while adapting to the young person as I believe everyone learns differently.

I am happy to support you in your research or practice, introduce you to art, help you deepen your knowledge or assist you with school projects and exams.

Personal Description:
I am currently 20 years old and am at university at UCL. I am reading a BA(Hons) degree in Politics and Economics. Specialising in contemporary Russian politics, the history of German social thought, Republicanism and Macroeconomics.

Throughout my education, I have developed both an understanding of how to write well but also to help others improve their capacity to read, write, comprehend and speak English. My TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification has trained me how to be an effective tutor. I have spent time abroad pursuing my passion of education, in particular in Vietnam were my teaching ranged from large classes of thirty students to 1-1 classes. My approach is punctual, reliable, efficient, patient and the work itself will be tailored to the needs and ambitions of the student.

I am also available to teach other subjects such as Politics, History and Philosophy from a beginner to advanced level. In addition to this, I believe that the process of education should be enjoyable and rewarding because academic passion supports your learning.

Please feel free to ask me any questions at all and to contact me if you would like to organise a tutorial. I hope you will find my price agreeable, but I would also like to offer the first tutorial for free, so that we can get to know one another and establish your aims. Thank you!

Personal Description:
Hi I'm Dan. Let me tell you why I should be your tutor.

I've been teaching for over four years now and have helped students of all ages from across the world. Most of the time I teach philosophy, but I also have experience and competencies in other areas. I worked for a year in an academy in the south of Spain and have taught hundreds of private tutorials, both online and in person.

My students tell me I am very good at making things accessible. My lessons are fun and engaging, the most rewarding moments being when a student tells me I'm wrong (it's seems to happen more as time goes on - a good or bad sign?!). I've worked with a lot of people with exams specifically in mind - going over course material, working on exam technique, practising essay questions - but I've also had a lot of students who have come to me for help with things they are interested in learning for purely personal reasons. Of course my favourite students are the ones I get to keep for a long period, develop a strong relationship with, and see develop as the months pass. I will have you reciting Wittgenstein in no time!

In my other life I'm an MA student. I've had a number of my own papers published (some links below). I have first-class honours at BA and was previously an editor of an international undergraduate philosophy journal. I'm quite good at writing and improving essays, and I don't mind sharing a few trade secrets…
