Teaching Experience:

I have taught over the last 27 years and my teaching has included several subjects: English as a foreign language and English (including English as a foreign language) and I have also taught primary Maths and the piano up to grade 4 . I have taught History and French at all levels and Geography and Biology up to National 5 level ( lower level) I have also taught art and design up to university level and currently provide art classes for children in my home every week.

I think learning takes place when students feel free to give it a go and make mistakes without any fear of negative remarks from the teacher. I have a lot of experience of working with young people, with extensive experience gained from working with the Admissions department of Worcester College (at the University of Oxford) as well as working as a Choral Scholar at the College (where I had to provide an example to the young choristers of one of the choirs).

In addition to this I was a Junior Foster Carer for 11 years (from ages 7-18), where I worked alongside various members of Social Services in order to provide a stable home for children in care.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is a traditional one, particularly when it comes to the teaching of Latin and Greek, which is taught by composition into the language from English and through the reading of original texts.

I ask for a tutee to try their hardest - as long as they do, they will be met with a tutor who will give their all in order to help them achieve their goal, a tutor dedicated to his teaching and his pupil.

I also incorporate modern methods into my teaching, including the use of ICT and the latest examples of Digital Humanities e.g. The Perseus Project.

Teaching Experience:

I have over fourteen years of teaching experience, in GCSE, iGCSE, A-level, International Baccalaureate Standard and Higher level Physics and also International Baccalaureate Theory of Knowledge. Consequently I have a substantial array of teaching resources, practice questions and answers and experience of seeing the difficulties of students and helping them better access concepts and solve problems in these disciplines. In my tutorials I look to enthuse my pupils with a genuine interest in the subject, and help them think about topics in new ways. I believe it is important to maximize their input in the session, encouraging them to explore their ideas and better understand the subject at their own pace.

My previous experience has been in tutoring pupils with set work, helping them complete assignments set by school teachers and exam revision. This can be supplemented by additional material such as revision booklets, additional books on specific subjects (especially useful at A Level), and relevant online content.
