| Personal Description: A qualified and experienced teacher, I live in North Northumberland with my husband, our 4 children and pet dog. Despite not having done a huge amount of formal teaching over the past few years, I have done a little supply work and enjoy spending time helping my own youngsters with their learning. Now that my children are growing up, I want to spend more time helping other people achieve again. I like the flexibility that private tuition offers. I'm prepared to travel within a 15 mile radius of my home address (though you will need to cover the fuel costs) or you can come to me. I will also happily communicate via the internet or over the phone if there are problems with studies - though I don't have skype or anything like that at present. |
Teaching Experience: I have spent 10 years of my life as a school teacher and have almost a lifetime of informal teaching experience! Having completed a teaching qualification (PGCE) at Durham Uni in 1994, I spent 6 years in London teaching combined sciences at KS3 and KS4. I also developed and delivered a Biology A-level curriculum for several years. In 2000, I moved back home to Northumberland and worked in a private school where I taught students from 8yrs of age through to 19yrs. Subjects included science (KS2/KS3), biology (KS4/Yrs 12+13), mathematics (KS2), technology(KS2/KS3), PHSE(KS2/KS3/KS4). More recently, I have taken time out to spend more time with my family. With 3 children at First School, I have continued to gain teaching experience helping my youngsters with their learning. Additionally, as well as doing a bit of supply, I have offered informal tuition in Biology and English to some of my peers. |
Tutoring Approach: Learning is a two-way relationship between tutor and tutee - what works for one learner may not work for another. The use of a variety of learning techniques is important - it's necessary to tailor lessons to the individual needs, strengths and interests of the student. I like to utilise a number of resources - the internet, texts, relevant current affairs articles and hands on experiments where appropriate. To learn well, it's important to feel relaxed - I try my best to make the student feel comfortable and confident. I am happy for parents to join in with lessons; it's useful, as parents can help their children with their studies too! For GCSE and A-level tutees, learning good revision and examination techniques are also necessary and these are areas I also deal wth. Past pupils have almost always achieved or excelled expectations. I am in touch with some of my ex students (now adults) who would no doubt be happy to provide an honest reference! |

| Personal Description: I have been involved with Psychology for the last 17 years - since I started studying it at A level. I gained my degree in Psychology from Leeds University, and my PGCE teaching qualification from Huddersfield University. I remain incredibly enthusiastic about this fantastic subject and am very successful in getting learners excited about understanding the concepts they encounter. I am currently able to offer tutoring for GCSE, AS and A2 Psychology (AQA Specification A), including overviews and explanations of different areas such as key approaches, underlying topic areas, coursework and homework concerns. I can also provide specific focus on exam techniques and requirements, such as understanding assessment criteria, and including sample papers, answers, and feedback. |
Teaching Experience: I have 8 years teaching experience from GCSE to Degree level, and with learners from 16 years upwards. I have taught both in college and school classes. I have taken part in a number of successful Ofsted inspections, most recently in 2006 when I achieved a Grade 2. In our 2007 internal observations I achieved a Grade 1. |
Tutoring Approach: The key to successful tutoring is to tailor it to the needs of the individual or group being tutored. Combining this with personal experience of knowing what it is like to need help and guidance with a subject (not Psychology in my case) and how good it feels to get that support, I aim to provide the learner with a genuine interest in the subject, whilst helping them to gain confidence in their own abilities. After initial discussions with the learner I can plan a work scheme to suit, with overall goals as well as aims for each tutoring session, and reviews to ensure these are achieved, and meet the individual needs of the learner. Tutoring sessions can be booked weekly, as a revision aid, as an intensive course over a few days, or as a private candidate for a full course. I can also provide 1-1 tutoring, or for a group if required. |

Teaching Experience: I have taught in two very different schools with very different approaches during my training year. I have experienced and taught a number of different courses with different exam boards in all three sciences and Biology to As and A level. I have also volunteered in two schools in Sheffield working as a teaching assistant. Although new to teaching, I have a thorough understanding of the curriculum and subject content and fresh and up to date knowledge on teaching and learning in schools. |
Tutoring Approach: In order to capture a students' interest, the teaching style must be varied and it must be interactive. I use a variety of different techniques to keep the student interested and engaged in the activities. In addition to this, I will constantly be measuring how the student is doing to identify whether they are improving and what areas they still need to work on to reach their targets. Tutoring Approach: I will either work through particular chapters in school text books or alternatively tailor classes according to topics or general concepts that the tutee is interested in learning about from scratch or is having difficulty understanding. I always like to place new concepts in the bigger picture to maintain interest. In particular I can do lessons on how the brain works (as far we know so far!) for tutees of any age or any previous level of biological knowledge. |
