Personal Description:
Hi! My name's Ed. I read Classics at Cambridge before going on to train at the Bristol Old Vic. I'm now working as a professional actor in London.

I tutor in English, and all areas of Latin and Ancient Greek. If it's of interest, I particularly specialized in my finals papers on Homer, Virgil, Horace, and the evolution of tragedy.

Though I read Classics, a large chunk of my finals actually ended up being part of the English course - specifically tracing the origins of tragedy through to the present day. As an actor, too, I'm continually having to familiarize myself with new areas of literature, be it poetry, drama, or prose, with the advantage, I hope, of an extremely practical approach.

Teaching Experience:

Overall, I've found it best to keep a balance between tutoring English and Classics. I like to be teaching a range of things.

When moving to Bristol I was lucky enough to be offered a part-time teaching post with the Classics department at Clifton College. Over the two years I primarily taught A level language work in Greek and Latin, as well as coaching their prospective candidates for Oxford and Cambridge.

I've also done a lot of free-lancing in all sorts of areas for both English and Classics, tutoring Oxbridge applicants as well as students at both school and university level.

The work I've done with my tutees has varied widely. In Latin and Greek, I've assisted some specifically in translating set texts both at school and university level (I'm now very familiar with the OCR Latin syllabus); I've introduced others, who wished to explore beyond their prescribed syllabus, to new areas of literature; and with others I've worked on more wide-ranging ways to deepen literary analysis or approach translation.

I should probably add that my language work with school students has almost exclusively involved tackling the inadequacies of the confounded Cambridge Latin Course! This seems to be taught in virtually every school but seemingly never elects to teach grammar, which I find utterly bizarre. If you're a victim of this clueless course I'm more than happy to help!

In terms of English tuition, I've been fortunate enough to have a similarly broad range of tutees, at GCSE, A level, and university standard, though a high proportion have been Oxbridge candidates.

Some references from previous tutees below:

Naomi, A Level Latin and Greek (2013)

Ed,

Sorry it's so early but I just thought I'd let you know I got my Cambridge grades! Thank you so much for everything once again!

Neirin, Latin GCSE (2013)

Hello Ed. We are so delighted with Neirin's results, absolutely fabulous. And who would have thought - an A star in Latin! Thank you for all your effort and encouragement. He couldn't have done it without you. Enjoy the rest of the summer and good luck with the writing.

Katie, Oxbridge Ancient Greek (2013)

Ed's work with Katie has been completely outstanding. I think we were asking for something quite demanding, a combination of literature and language, with inspiration to boot, and he delivered it superbly. Katie was super-enthused by his approach. I think they both thoroughly enjoyed the classes (indeed from the sound of it I would have enjoyed them myself!) Ed has a combination of intellect, passion and (as far as I can judge) a real feel for the texts!

Zac, Scholarship Latin (2014)

Ed has been tutoring our 11 year old for Latin scholarship papers. In 5 sessions he has taken him to a new level and has totally inspired him! We can't recommend him highly enough!...

Hiya Ed,

Thanks for the email ... got an A* in Philosophy and A's in Latin and English.

Thank you very much for all your help, couldn't have got the A without your tutoring.

Hope all goes well for you at theatre school and you're enjoying the summer.

Best wishes,

Sophie.

You're also welcome to get in touch with the Head of Classics at Clifton College, Mr Huntington, who employed me at the school between 2009 and 2011.

Tutoring Approach:

I think it's impossible to pin down a sure-fire method of effective tutoring for any given person. People are different, and different methods work with different people.

That said, I am a firm believer that you cannot simply speak at someone. Learning has to be an active process, and I think there has to be involvement from both sides for things to sink in. In this light, I do try to make things enjoyable, and also to limit shortcuts; I'm of the view that it's far better to invest the time in getting firmly to grips with a subject, be it an instance of grammar or literary concept. In the long run that is a shortcut in itself.

Personal Description:
I am 33 years old and currently live in London. I am originally from Derbyshire in the north of England. Before becoming a teacher, I worked with children aged between 2 and 12 in a variety of environments. I enjoy sport and run and coach the school Year 6 football team, I also enjoy playing tennis and swimming. I have worked with children of various ages for the last six years and have been a qualified teacher for 5 years.

Teaching Experience:

I am a fully qualified primary school teacher and currently preparing a Year 6 class for their 11+ exams in West London. I have 5 years experience in teaching during which time I have taught Year 4 (8/9 year olds), Year 5 and Year 6 (10/11 year olds, final year at primary school). Last year I underwent training for a one-to-one teaching programme, which involved working with individual children, each for an hour a week. As a full time primary school teacher, I teach all National Curriculum subjects including Maths, English and Science, I also have experience teaching the 11+ syllabus. I was also the ICT coordinator at a previous school and excel in the subject knowledge and teaching of this subject.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that patience, flexibility and a desire for a child to reach their potential are key to being a successful tutor. Children need to be extended and pushed to ensure that they are not just doing the minimum to succeed, but the best that they can possibly do. I believe that my approach to tutoring is a balance of patience and persistence which is very successful in getting results. I am flexible in the way that I tutor, meaning that I can use a variety of teaching styles to suit the individual child's needs. No two children are the same and therefore each child learns in a different way. I am sensitive to the individuals needs and am able to find the best way for them to reach their potential.

I AM ALSO ABLE TO TUTOR FOR THE 11+.

Personal Description:
I specialize in helping students lift themselves to the top grade brackets. I have been teaching for 4 years, and my priority is to expand my students` understanding of the course material and to refine their skills to make them in perfect shape for the exams. I am ideally suited to students who are looking to reach the highest grade boundaries, and are looking for an academic trainer to get them into the right shape in order to get there. I like to find how students learn best and then reinvent the material to suit that type of learning - having done this for four years, I have a wealth of resources that I have created for different types of learners, and will happily continue to create these for new students.

I went to a grammar school where exams were the entire focus of school-life and because I had a lot of commitments during term-time, I developed many methods to get the most from revision within very tight time-frames. I evolved my methods through the education system as a student rather than outside of it, so I have a very organic approach to learning and taking exams.

My students get the highest marks in their exams - my students in 2012-2013 all scored 100% in the modules that I taught them (A2-level Economics Edexcel Unit 3 and Unit 4, AS-level Edexcel Unit 1 & 2 and AQA Unit 1 & 4) - one after only 4 weeks of teaching on each. I developed my teaching style around two main goals: developing the students` understanding of the subject material, and enabling the student to be an independent thinker with confidence during the exam.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a tutor for the last 4 years: my A-level students in 2012 scored A `s in the modules in which I taught them (Edexcel units 1-4 Eonomics, C2-C4, S1 and M1 Maths, AQA units 1-2 economics) - several of whom scored 100%, and one scoring 100% in Unit 4 after lessons which we successfully conducted on Skype through two two-hour sessions a week (references available). I initially specialised in teaching Mathematics and Economics, and then upon receiving interest from my students I began to offer lessons entirely specialising in exam methods for these subjects, which aimed to teach students exam secrets and skill-sets and train them to independently tackle exams.

Tutoring Approach:

I teach in the way in which I learn; as my time constraints became more stringent while studying, I began to study the nature of studying itself, deepening my understanding of the structure of examinations and the way that revision can be tailored to exploit it. I know that that the student must not only have a strong, comprehensive grasp of the subject material, but that they must use this with a confident mindset. I aim to teach students methods with which to comfortably and independently sit exams with the highest possible results: among more technical nuances of the subject, they will be taught to increase their command of their brainpower, and finally be given tips to help them deal with common exam issues (like pressure, being stuck, avoiding waffle and hints to get the examiner on their side).

I have a high success rate with my 11+ students, with over 75% of them being offered a place at CRGS or CCHS last year.

Early years

Tutoring Approach:

Due to high demand I now only offer group sessions for the 11+. The 11+ is an extremely challenging examination and few children are able to pass without additional help. I push all of my children to achieve the best possible result. For many children the 11+ is not appropriate and this is discussed with parents at the free assessment. It is usually apparent after an hour assessment of the child, whether or not they are capable of passing the exam.
I am now taking bookings for January 2015. Places are available for year 4 and 5 children. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to reserve a place for your son or daughter or if you wish to discuss things further.

Personal Description:
I am an English graduate with a 1st Class Honours Degree and I have experience as a Secondary level English and Drama Teacher. My area of interest lies in 19th Century Literature (particularly Dickens), Shakespeare, Baudrillardian and Marxist theory and socialism, English Romanticism and Psychoanalytical theory. My dissertation explored the representations of the conscious and unconscious mind in P.B. Shelley's poetry and I have completed modules at university in 18th century Literature, Gothic Literature, Post-modernist and modernist literature and 19th century Literature. I am familiar with literary theory and I am therefore able to assist those seeking guidence with basic philosophy, particularly with Marxism, Baudrillardian Post-modernism and Freudian/Jungian psychoanalytical theory.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience of Teaching in two secondary schools where I completed the following duties:

Planning and teaching well-structured lessons in KS3, KS4 and KS5 English.
Planning and teaching well-structured lessons in KS3 Drama.
Setting high expectations which, inspire, motivate and challenge pupils by consistently demonstrating a positive attitude. Promoting good progress and outcomes of pupils by planning teaching to build on pupils' capabilities and prior knowledge. Demonstrating good subject and curriculum knowledge.
Adapting teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils by differentiating appropriately.
Making accurate and productive use of assessment by setting targets and giving pupils regular feedback through accurate marking.
Managing behaviour effectively by modelling appropriate behaviour and by maintaining good relationships with pupils. Fulfilling wider professional responsibilities by communicating effectively with parents with regard to pupils' achievements and well-being.

Tutoring Approach:

From personal experience, I find it best to request a sample of writing from a pupil or a rough draft of the work that they wish to improve. From this I am able to see what the pupil struggles with linguistically. This enables me to provide any information that is required regarding the improvement of their grammar and the overall structure of their writing. I would then suggest that they read an extract of their piece out loud for me. Phonetics has a profound impact on the ability of a writer. If a piece of writing does not sound right when spoken aloud then it needs amending with help and time. With subject specific modules or course's such as media/film studies or philosophy, I would require a brief list outlining the material that the student is required to cover throughout their course and what film/theory they require assistance with.

Personal Description:
I have been a teacher all my professional life, although for ten years I worked in the theatre as an actor, fight director and singer. I love teaching and I love music. Most importantly, perhaps, I have never stopped learning!

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching English, French and German for 25 years. I studied English at Oxford; worked in Germany, studied in Spain and have my main home in France. My first GCSE Spanish class all achieved A* and A grades. I recently trained in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, so I feel up to date with current teaching methodology. Nevertheless, I adapt my teaching style and methods to benefit my tutees. I teach adult evening classes and give private tuition in French, Spanish, German and English Literacy.

Tutoring Approach:

I will come to your home and talk to you about what your learning requirements are and will tutor in order for you to maximise your potential in line with your requirements. All tutees have different learning styles and preferences, too, so I will pick up on yours and shape our lessons accordingly. We will work proactively, and there will be specific goals and targets for each lesson so that you will be able to chart your progress. My colleagues think I have a great sense of humour, and I have sometimes found it to be helpful in a teaching situation. I am, however, totally professional in the conduct of my lessons and tutorials.

Personal Description:
I am an experienced teacher of English and mother of two in my forties. I graduated from Greenwich University in 2005 with a 2:1 in English and history and then went on to study for a masters degree in English at the University of Kent in 2006, earning a degree with merit. After graduating I completed a School Centred Initial Teacher Training course with Kent and Medway Training, through which I achieved Qualified Teacher Status and a PGCE.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked in Bexley Borough as a full time teacher for the past five years and I am currently teaching English Literature and Language at Erith School. I have a successful track record with both individual students and whole classes. My 2011 Year 11 class achieved 100% A* - C grades (6 A*s, 2 As, 14 Bs, and 6 Cs). And, after taking their Language exam in January 2012, my last, slightly lower ability, Year 11 class achieved 84% B - C grades.

Tutoring Approach:

I am an enthusiastic and committed teacher and I take enormous pride in my work. I have excellent communication skills and feel that I make English both understandable and interesting to the students I teach. I am generally an organised and quite disciplined person, but I also believe that spontaneity, flexibility and humour can play an important part in creating a positive, productive learning environment.

I have my own car and I am prepared to travel to homes within a ten mile radius of my home in New Ash Green or areas within Bexley Borough (on weekday evenings). However, I am also happy to give tuition at my home.

Personal Description:
For over 7 years I have been teaching English, Literacy and Reading. My aim is to help each student reach their potential through tailored lessons designed to build confidence as well as make learning enjoyable. I own an Enhanced CRB which is clear.

Teaching Experience:

For over 7 years I have been teaching English, Literacy and Reading from in and out of my own home.

Tutoring Approach:

My aim is to help each student reach their potential through tailored lessons designed to build confidence as well as make learning enjoyable. I have a strong belief that for people of all ages, learning can be fun, and if you enjoy the process, you are much more likely to learn something!

I am extremely enthusiastic when it comes to teaching. There is nothing I enjoy more than seeing a student achieve what they set out to do, be it a particular grade they need to obtain or a skill they need to develop. Often lessons tend to last a little longer than the initial hour as I am simply not in this for the money- my satisfaction comes from watching my students achieve and I don't mind eating into my own time by a few more minutes to make sure that happens.

Due to several requests from current and former students, I am now also happy to discuss teaching other subjects outside of English. Please simply give me a call to discuss this.

Testimonials:

'David is extremely hard working and one of the most enthusiastic people we've seen when it comes to teaching. It quickly got to the point where our son was looking forward to his lessons and was disappointed when when we had to reschedule the odd one. Would def recommend.'

-Mohammed Akbar, Father of Hassan

'Really happy with Mr Edon's work. Got results and lessons seemed to be very creative.'

-Janet Cole, Mother of Luke

'Let me start off by saying that I was embarrassed to approach a tutor at first. I have had reading and writing difficulties since I was very young but David ensured full anonymity and built my confidence to a very high level. He has been teaching me once a week for 2 years now. I have learnt more than I ever did at school in a much shorter space of time.'

Personal Description:
I love teaching and believe that this enthusiasm is fundamental in getting the best out of my tutees. With a proven track record as an excellent tutor throughout KS2 & KS3, I take in to account both the pastoral and academic needs of my tutees, genuinely caring about them as individuals and using their own interests within each session to help inspire them. I treat my tutees with respect and care in order to give them the confidence to achieve well academically as I firmly believe that confidence in one's ability is often the key to success.

Teaching Experience:

I have a vast experience of both the English and maths syllabi having taught in large, well-respected Prep Schools for the past 8 years. Having worked with a great many students of different ages and abilities, I am fully aware of what is needed for students to be successful whether it be in SATS, 11+, 13+ and Common Entrance exams or simply just to feel more confident in school.

Tutoring Approach:

Every tutor session is tailored entirely to the tutee, offering a range of different activities to ensure the sessions are dynamic and fun. If working towards an exam, then past papers and practising exam technique are key, not only to determine on which areas we need to focus, but also to ensure familiarity with the various formats.

Personal Description:
I am just graduating from my degree of drama at the University of Manchester. I am looking to work as a tutor whilst concentrating on my passion of writing. I feel that I have a great deal to offer. I offer intensive GCSE, A-Level and University tutoring in the run up to major exams and essays. These include full day sessions. I offer tutoring in a range of subjects - from Drama to Maths, and can work to suit your needs.
All prices are negotiable depending on location and level!

Teaching Experience:

I have experience preparing students for entrance exams at the top schools in the Greater Manchester area. I have done this over a number of years and adapted to changing expectations.
Further to this, I have introduced young children to new languages - French, Portuguese and Spanish. I have also helped adult learners to take the languages up in their spare time.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is simple...it depends on the student! Everybody requires a unique approach in order to maximise their potential. The key, of course, is that the work is enjoyable - then the student can prosper.
I am very flexible with hours, can offer intensive sessions and will be available for an extended period of time. Just ask!
