Personal Description:
I am a 29 year old English Language and Literature graduate. I am currently an editor at an international legal journal and have professional writing, proof-reading and sub-editing experience. I have been writing for publication since the age of 17 and am a confident tutor in acdemic and commercial writing.

I have a a first class degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Leeds, with additional honours in History and Philosophy. I have in depth knowledge of English, Irish and American literature, from Old English to the 21st century, encompassing poetry, prose and drama. I am also familiar with classical Greek and Roman literature and thought, Christian theology and philosophy, and 20th century critical and cultural theory.

Drawing on my professional experience, I am able to offer guidance and support to aspiring journalists - both in the execution of their research and writing and in their entry into the industry.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored young people of secondary school age on an informal basis since I began university. While at university I also coached my peers on essay writing, presentations and personal statements for job applications. I have experience working with special needs, in particular Down's Syndrome.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe strongly in the relevance of the individual in an educational setting, and as such I do not have a catch all "approach". I enjoy getting to know what works for different people in different contexts, and supporting them on that basis.

Personal Description:
I am a 24 year old graduate from the University of Sheffield with a 2.1 degree in Psychology. I currently work for Unilever but tutor part time during evenings and weekends. I am a friendly person with a strong academic background who enjoys helping people in areas they are struggling in, and seeing them through until they are confident in themselves.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored many people over the past 6 years, ranging in ages and academic ability. I am proud to say that every person I have tutored has improved by at least one grade. My greatest achievement was with my first ever tutee who came to me on an E grade, and with my help was able to get a high B in her English A level. I have alot of experience helping children pass the 11+.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is to create a calm and comfortable environment for the tutee. I try to make the learning of the particular area enjoyable and try to use effective methods that were used on me as I was learning, incorporated with other ideas I have, to ensure that the tutee learns as much as possible in the time I am with them. I also make a conscious effort to get to know each tutee well, so that I can cater my skills specifically to them and their individual needs in order for them to do as well they possibly can.

Personal Description:
I am a confident, diligent and sociable person, with a wide knowledge of world history, and specialising in American and South-East Asian history and culture. I hold a double first class Bachelors degree in History and American Studies from Canterbury Christ Church University, and have had many years experience leading youth projects such as youth councils, young persons' scrutiny forums (YPSF) and have acted as a liasion on several historical and cultural preservation projects such as the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE) and the Church House Preservation Committee.

Teaching Experience:

I have previous experience as a teaching assistant to KS3 and KS4 level history at a state secondary school.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a holistic approach to the teaching of history, ensuring that the student becomes engaged within a fuller understanding of the period being studied. As a former student and teach of history, I realise that the principal block to a tutee's understanding of historical concepts is a lack of immersion within the relevant time-frames and thus an inability to fully comprehend why certain actions were taken, and the wider effect this had.

Thus in my approach I am firm believer that it is as important for every student to understand to a higher level than that offered by the current state curriculum the context of the period they are studying. As a consequence I offer tailored introductions to said period's culture, economy, religious and political setting, and even physical geography.

Furthermore, I offer the necessary skills to craft this knowledge into well-reasoned, informed essays. My intimate knowledge of the state education system and beyond has imbued me with the ability to gauge how assignments will be assessed and thus I can work with students not only on improving their knowledge, but showcasing this in highly-marked, structured and coherent written forms.

I use a number of methods to achieve this, including homework assignments, but also using character adoption, audio-visual aids and a mixture of written and verbal questions of varying length and form.

Personal Description:
Hi! I'm an Oxford graduate with a 2:1 in English Language and Literature. I graduated in July, and since then I have been looking for interesting ways to spend my time whilst also raising some money for further study. Tutoring appealed to me at once as a rewarding way to put the skills that I learnt during my degree to good use. Reading English at Oxford has honed my critical thinking, analytical abilities and study skills. Last year I also co-wrote a novel which has just been published in the UK, which really deepened my understanding of how to write effectively. I'd love to tutor others and help them to develop these skills too! In my spare time, I love to read, write fiction, and I also work as a sub-editor at an online short story magazine. My main address is in EN4, but I am also happy to tutor in Oxford.

Teaching Experience:

In October this year I successfully completed an assessment for the selective tutoring agency Blue Tutors. During the assessment I had to demonstrate my tutoring ability to a trained assessor, who described my communication skills as 'excellent'.
In my final term at Oxford, I volunteered with Schools Plus, a program which runs after school tuition sessions for struggling students in areas of economic disadvantage. I spent half a term working with GCSE English students, tutoring them on an individual basis in the run up to their January modules. As part of the selection process for the program, I also attended tutoring training.
When I was in the 6th form (in 2009), I also volunteered as a classroom assistant in my school. I was working with students who were having difficulty with essay-based subjects like History and English. I worked with two students in their History classes, helping them to understand the work they were set in class and working through it with them. I also had to use my knowledge of French to help one student who had not yet learnt to speak fluent English, translating the teacher's instructions for her and helping her with words she did not understand. Also between 2009-10, I helped to run two after-school classes for Key Stage 2 pupils, one in Literacy and Art and another in Drama. This involved planning and delivering lessons to classes of about 5-10 children, and keeping them engaged with the topics they were learning through activities designed to both teach and entertain.

Tutoring Approach:

My experience of tutoring in the past has shown me the importance of patience and respect in teaching. Especially in essay-based subjects, it is crucial that a teacher allows their pupils space to develop their own ideas, and respects their independent thought. Learning by rote has only limited usefulness: the best way to excel at a subject is to understand it, so I always explain concepts as fully as possible and move at the tutee's pace, making sure that they have properly grasped each concept or issue before moving on to the next. My Schools Plus training emphasised the idea that the goal of tutoring is to help a student to help themselves, enabling them to tackle problems rather than solving things for them. I think that this is fantastic advice, and it is a rule which I always try to bear in mind when tutoring.

Personal Description:
I am a final year Classical & Archaeological Studies student at the University of Kent, having achieved a first class grade in second year, and a 3.8 GPA on my Year Abroad this year in Canada. During my degree I have taken modules related to Ancient History, Literature and Languages, and in continuation of my English Literature A-Level some modules from the schools of English and Comparative Literature. I therefore have a well-rounded knowledge of Humanities subjects and am particularly confident with writing essays and delivering presentations, aspects of related subjects which I would be comfortable with tutoring.

As I am in my final year of university and have no outstanding exams or assignments I can be extremely flexible with tutoring hours.

Teaching Experience:

I do not have specific teaching experience, however I regularly assist my peers with work and am confident in my ability to communicate with younger students in order to help and motivate them.

Tutoring Approach:

I will take a tutoring approach based on the Tutee's needs, focussing on areas that they may feel unconfident or unsure in with an aim to helping them.

Personal Description:
I am a 21-year-old BA English student entering my final year at the University of Leicester. My degree course focuses on a balanced variety of both English Literature and Language, and also covers the entire spectrum of English literature from Beowulf to Zadie Smith. Upon completion of my BA I intend to complete an MA degree in Creative Writing, with aspirations to joining the media/journalism industries.

I am a reliable, conscientious young woman. I have previously worked in retail and in an office environment as a data entry processor; in both of these positions I have developed a strong understanding of what it means to provide an excellent service to customers. I wish to tutor in English because I am keen to share my passion for the subject with younger students, and to support myself financially throughout my final undergraduate year.

Teaching Experience:

Throughout my second year at Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge, I tutored a lower-sixth student in English twice a week. This involved hour-long study sessions conducted in the college library, focusing on my tutee's desire to develop her analytical skills and exam preparation.

During my first year at the University of Leicester I engaged in a 6-week volunteer scheme named Creative Writing in Primary Schools. With three of my peers, I researched, planned and gave 90-minute sessions to a class of Year 4 pupils at a local primary school once a week. Our role was to develop their knowledge of Creative Writing and to engage them in learning activities that would see them produce their own short stories. Characters and plot were explored, as well as traditional grammar and style activities.
(NB: Because of this activity, I have a DBS/CBR check)

Tutoring Approach:

I am very enthusiastic about the discipline of English Literature and Language, and would enjoy the opportunity to develop the vast array of analytical, reading, writing, communication and creative skills the study of English can offer to students.

I am flexible in my approach and am happy to work with tutees on any aspects of English that may be causing them difficulties, whether that be spelling or basic reading skills, to textual analysis and exam preparation. I would also encourage creativity and originality where appropriate, and guide tutees in both their academic and extracurricular reading.

Finally, I believe in a polite and respectful approach to tutoring. I understand that all children and young people have varying needs and learning styles, and I am happy to accommodate and support them throughout the tutoring process.
