Personal Description:
I am a professional and dedicated native English teacher with years of experience behind me.

Teaching Experience:

I have gained TEFL experience within varied teaching roles, both abroad and in the UK. In my previous roles I have worked with children, teenagers, and adults in companies, schools, and summer camps. I have taught General English, Business English, and exam classes to groups and one-to-one students in school and business environments. I also have experience of teaching students with dyslexia. This variety has enabled me to continually assess my style of teaching and keep me on my toes!

Working in such roles has given me crucial insight into the needs of the student. I am extremely patient and understand the frustration that can arise when learning, whether it is a new language or subject. I realise that people acquire knowledge through varied means so I am keen to adjust my teaching style to benefit my students.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe a mature, responsible, and eclectic teaching approach, as well as a good sense of humour, is crucial for a successful learning environment.

I offer a custom-made service, whether you need to improve your general English skills, your writing, or simply build your confidence. I also have years of experience in teaching Business English and Exam English (IELTS/FCE/CAE). Whatever you need help with, I am happy to focus my lessons on what you require.

I offer Skype lessons and professional proofreading for people who may not be able to meet face-to-face.

I am available to tutor at your home, workplace, or in a quiet cafe in Central London. I can also tutor in Cambridge.

Personal Description:
I have just completed my degree at the University of Birmingham (BSc Environmental Science) achieving a 2.1 classification. I have a place on a Masters course (MSc Environmental Health) due to commence October 2014.

I am well organised, efficient and take a friendly approach to tutoring - as well as being hard-working and easy to get along with, I am reliable and prefer my lessons to be enjoyable as well as informative. My passion for cooking, combined with another passion of mine, travel, has enabled me to spend considerable time in numerous countries giving me first hand knowledge of different languages/cultures and business environments. So far I have been fortunate to visit; New Zealand, Australia, France, Spain, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Canary Islands, Norway, Sweden and intend to visit many more.

Teaching Experience:

At the moment I am tutoring adult students on a one-to-one basis at the University of Birmingham. Last academic year, I tutored 5 and the new year has just began. These students require extra help with their English language skills (they are all foreign nationals).

I also completed a 4 week internship in a New Zealand grammar school this summer (Aug/Sep 2012) allowing me to gain classroom experience.

I also tutor/help out my younger brother who is 18 and just finished his A levels.

Tutoring Approach:

I take an informal approach but also ensure that sessions are structured well and tailored for each individual students' needs so every tutee is able to get the most from the session.

I am perfectly happy to re-arrange or cancel classes if necessary, I just ask to be notified at least 24 hours prior to the intended lesson.

Personal Description:
I studied English Literature at Edinburgh University, graduating with a First Class Masters in 1999, before going on to train as an actor at the prestigious London Academy of Dramatic Art (LAMDA) in 2001. Since graduating, I have worked extensively as an actor in theatre, television and radio and since 2007 I have worked very closely with acclaimed theatre company The Factory as an associate producer and director as well as an actor. I have a wide-ranging interest in the arts (from contemporary music through to cinema and the visual arts) as well as an active interest in politics and current affairs. I have worked as a free-lance tutor since 2005 and love not only the obvious flexibility it affords but, far more importantly, the mental, creative and social stimulation it provides both me and, hopefully, those I teach.

Teaching Experience:

In 2005 I registered with a private agency and taught English Literature as a freelance tutor at GCSE level for them that year.
I have wide and extensive experience teaching and creating drama with young people: I have worked on schools and youth projects with Shakespeare's Globe, the National Student Drama Festival and the Carney Academy of Performing Arts as well providing private tuition for drama school entrance and audition technique.
I occasionally work for the University of Westminster as a free-lance actor, working closely with director and academic Helen Eastman.

Tutoring Approach:

I passionately believe that education needs to be grounded in passing on, developing and deepening the love of a subject and that, as such, learning shouldn't be results led. I also believe that people are different and that an approach to tutoring and education should reflect that.

As such I aim to keep engagement and enjoyment at the centre of the process. I encourage pupils to engage with their subject through lateral and creative thinking in the belief that good results follow when a student can enter into a dialogue with the work they are being asked to do and not the other way round.

Personal Description:
I am a current teacher who believes learning must, at all times, be relevant and fun. I always spend a lot of time planning my lessons to make sure that students learn as quickly as possible, whilst at the same time making sure that they become pro-active learners. My passion is English, and I aim to pass this passion on to all of my students through lessons that are filled with fun, engaging discussion and exciting tasks.

Although I do believe in fun and engaging lessons, I also am very aware of the need to work towards the Assessment Objectives that exam boards give, of which students are ultimately measured by in their examinations. My planning, therefore, always takes into account the mixture of fun and focus on assessment objectives that is needed for both enjoyment and success.

I have deliberately not pursued a career in management in schools because I find huge enjoyment in teaching students privately. Parents often contact me because, sadly, their child is not working at their potential at their school, for whatever reason that may be. To take a student who may not be reaching their potential and transform them into a confident and successful English student is the most rewarding thing that I believe I can possibly do in my career, which is why my focus is now increasingly leaning towards private tuition.

My particular areas of expertise are English students who are either preparing for their 11+ examinations, students who need booster sessions in Key Stage 3 and students who need help in passing their GCSE examinations.

Teaching Experience:

I have held the post of Head of English at a school in Staffordshire, and I have led a team of exceptional English teachers. Having held other management positions in other schools as well, with management focus on both key Stage 3 and 4, I have built up a wealth of experience and knowledge that I can now put to good use within the sphere of personal tuition.

I am also an experienced examiner, having marked for a leading exam body for five years now. This has helped me enormously to build up a very clear understanding of what exam boards require from students.

Last year's results saw a continuation of my fine record of exam success, where my class achieved 100% A-C in their GCSE examinations. My current year 11 class are predicted to have 5 A*'s, 10 A grades and fifteen B grades. This will be the finest set of English class results in the school's history.

I have built up tremendously successful working relationship with my clients, and parents who I currently work for, and worked for, have happily created testimonials for me which I would be able to provide for your perusal upon request.

Tutoring Approach:

My largest concern for my students is to make sure that their confidence is built up by becoming pro-active and independent learners. All too often tutors 'spoon-feed' their students, leading them to a false sense of security in their skills, which therefore leads to poor performance in examinations.

I also view myself as a 'English Coach', as I place a very big emphasis on ensuring that students have the right frame of mind when approaching studying English. Confidence, and belief in their own ideas, is so important for students to have, and all too often this lack of confidence is instrumental in why they are not performing as they should be.

Annie has enjoyed teaching Functional English (equivalent to GCSE English) for the past two years. As a published writer/novelist, her passion for writing is apparent in every lesson - whether for children or for adults.

She is also enthusiastic about preparing KS2 children for their English SATs, and assisting AS/A2 Philosophy students with their course.

Finally, she is fully qualified to teach EFL/ESOL (English to speakers of other languages) and would welcome the opportunity to take on more students in this area.

Teaching Experience:

Two years teaching Functional English (adults).
Twelve years teaching assistant for KS2 (lots of SATS work).
Some A Level Philosophy teaching.
Some lecturing for degree course (Bristol Baptist College, Theology/ethics).

Personal Description:
My name is Jennie, I am a highly qualified English Language and Literature teacher and tutor. I have been teaching English Language and Literature for four years, since graduating from Edinburgh University with a First Class MA(Hons) Degree in English Literature. I have a passion for working with children and inspiring them to develop their skills and mastery of both English Language and Literature.

Teaching Experience:

During my four years teaching in London, I have been consistently rated as an OFSTED Outstanding Teacher and have a wealth of experience and proven track record of results with students of all ability levels.

As well as teaching both A-Level and GSCE to Gifted and Talented Students, I am a Deputy SENCo and have a wealth of experience working with students with literacy difficulties and special educational needs.

I have also worked as a teacher in a range of educational settings, including voluntary work in Swaziland and Ghana and these experiences have enabled me to develop a flexible teaching approach and the ability to tailor my methods of teaching to the needs of the individual child I am working with.

Tutoring Approach:

I am friendly, approachable and dedicated to helping students succeed. I feel that the most important thing about being a great teacher is getting to know the child/young adult you are working with in order to understand how best they learn. This enables me to tailor my approach in order to help your child to improve their abilities in a way that suits them.

I like to be creative and interactive and enable students to make links between their learning and real-life in order that they can embed the skills they are being taught more fully. I also feel that discussion is a key part of teaching English Language and Literature, to enable students to build their confidence and complexity through talk, in order to develop their written skills.

Personal Description:
My name is Suzanne and I am 39 years old. I have a degree from Oxford University in French and Linguistics and a PGCE from Queen's in Belfast. I am half French and have lived in France and Belgium. I have always loved language-learning and am passionate to communicate to others the benefits of being able to speak another language. It opens our horizons and makes travel abroad much more rewarding. I have a wide range of teaching experience and love what I do.

Teaching Experience:

I taught in secondary schools for five years in Oxford and London. I had classes in French from Key Stage 3 - 5; German at KS 3 - 4 and English at KS 3 and 4. After a break of a number of years to be with my children, I set up as a private tutor and have been running a successful business since 2008. I have done sessions with large and small groups in nurseries and run after-school groups for primary-age children, including families with siblings of different ages. I have tutored all the main exam boards at GCSE and A level for French, as well as 13+ scholarship papers for Independent Schools boards. I have coached adults studying for Open University and worked with many adults of all levels on conversational French and German. I am familiar with the methodology and course material used in schools and am well practised in helping students to fill in gaps and to feel more at ease in these subjects.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to make the sessions as enjoyable as possible, while making sure we maximise the use of time to target the specific skills area. We all learn best when we feel relaxed and motivated. For younger learners, I use a lot of games, songs and stories. When it comes to students, I make sure I find out exactly which areas they are most concerned about and make a plan with them as to how we will work. Building confidence is usually a key area of development. One-to-one lessons are ideal for consolidating grammar points or practising assessment pieces, especially orals in languages. For adults, I take my lead from the preferences of the client, but I like to use cultural material such as music, video and current affairs. I use a wide range of support material and am always looking into new resources. I make sure my lessons are varied and relevant.

Personal Description:
I'm twenty years of age and I will begin my third year reading English at the University of Cambridge early in October. I'm enthusiastic about tutoring because I've experienced first hand the potential to inspire young people to success through encouragement and the fostering of ability; my own English teacher was the reason that I became interested in English literature and eventually went on to study it at Cambridge. But more than this I feel that the subjects I have a knowledge of (as listed below) have made very positive impressions upon my personality, being deeply rooted in culture, ethics, responsibility and rights. I really believe in my subjects and I want to pass that passion on to young people.

To dispel any concern about my background, I am from a low-income, single-parent household. My two years at Cambridge has introduced me to very high level academia and to peers who had a better education (at least on paper) than I did. My experiences of comprehensive school education and world-class university have shaped me into a person who is able to engage with anyone from any background, and I really believe in helping people from Stoke-on-Trent and the Midlands more generally to reach upper-level institutions, in which they are vastly under-represented.

Teaching Experience:

I have very little teaching experience and I will in no way disguise that from you. My only formal role as a tutor was during high school and some of VI form, in which I tutored 11-15 year old children in reading once per week.

I would like to take this opportunity to stress that I have no formal qualifications in teaching and that I will only be available until early October; my sessions would be, in this case, catered toward short-term goals which could be achieved before this time.

Tutoring Approach:

Having no previous experience, my approach would be somewhat experimental, immersive and very much catered to the individual involved.

My view, from experience, is that instilling enthusiasm in the tutee is of paramount importance. Learning by rote or by simply forcing information into someone's head does not tend to engage their creative energies in the writing of an essay, for example. As such, I would hope to take up an approach which is both expansive and thorough in its appreciation of the material at hand; but also effectively explore the curriculum and mark-schemes for the examination(s) in order to achieve effective deployment of the material.

Some samples of how I might teach runs as follows:

-- English --

[Assuming we are working with, say, Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men]

The main bulk of teaching would involve and in-depth exploration of:

- The novel's historical and cultural significance;
- Possible film productions, and how the difference in media has affected reception and portrayal of the story;
- Themes running within the texture of the language: their metaphorical and symbolic significance;
- Reading aloud extracts of the novel to feel the characters and their dialogue rather than confining them to silent reading;
- Creative representations of the plot, its characters and the importance of the work more generally.

In teaching these elements the mark-scheme will have largely been fulfilled from a material perspective. Overlooked elements of the mark-scheme and notes from examiners reports can often unlock the higher grade boundaries for students who are able but simply do not know that they have to include these elements in an essay. These may include:

- A thoughtful, relevant personal response to the work;
- Use of specific types of language, punctuation and grammar according to the level of the examination;
- Producing 'flair' in essay writing;
- Structuring a well-written essay;
- Spelling, vocabulary;
- A focussed response.

These are all requirements which can be trained in a tutee, and are relatively easy to attain through practice and with the right kind of material to deploy. What I propose is holistic and engaging, as well as being designed with a view to developing written technique to access the higher areas of the mark scheme.

This example is largely catered toward GCSE tutoring for English Literature; but I am flexible in the range of subjects that I have knowledge of and in the level of teaching which is require according to the ability of the tutee. My only request is that, should you be interested in having me provide tutoring services, you allow me some time and plenty of information to work with in order to get to know the student and his/her capabilities. I am a fast reader and a quick learner, so most subjects within my remit should be applicable.

Personal Description:
I like to talk to different people differently, it is all about how they prefer to learn for one to one talks about areas they need help on to case studies that the tutee might need to explain to me. I am a native Spanish speaker and have grasped the English language very well with an accent that is understandable by many people I believe it is easy to learn different languages when I am here to help.

Teaching Experience:

After leaving secondary school I went back to help my Spanish teacher and found a secret passion for teaching. After I started my college course I started to help students still doing their GCSEs or those that are just struggling in the understanding of a subject. Here I found that I like to help people extend their knowledge and expand their understanding of different subjects.

Tutoring Approach:

I will always start by asking how you prefer to learn. I will find out what you already know and what you believe need improvement on, I will then give you something to work on in your spare time (however this will not be essential) I might give you certain things to watch or listened to, to improve your learning, for example, countdown for maths or movies in Spanish for Spanish. I have many ideas of ways people can learn different things, it is all left down to you. After all it is you paying me to help.

Personal Description:
My name is Barney, I'm 21 years old and an undergraduate history student at King's College London. I live a diverse lifestyle; despite the fact I am diligent and aim to excel in my studies, I also fulfill my time on the sports field, within the theater and in all aspects of life to the full. For example, I am the captain of the King's College London Rugby 1st XV, a position which necessitates not only ability but also a great deal of responsibility. Furthermore, in my 1st year at King's College London I played a lead role in the university production of 'Fame' the musical. Nonetheless, academia is of vital importance to me; I'm constantly striving to learn and I love being able to teach others what I have come across. Most importantly however, I'm an affable, caring and honest person. I know how to make people laugh and I value my people skills above all else. Whilst at school, I undertook an A.C.H.E. scheme (Advice, Care, Help, Empathy), which enabled me to act as a student councilor to anyone feeling upset, worried or just needing guidance.

Teaching Experience:

Within my role as Deputy Head Boy at my secondary school (Truro School, TR1 1TH), I was required not only to fulfill supervisory but also educational roles. This meant aiding the teachers, sometimes by assisting individuals who required extra help.

In the Spring of 2012 I spent two months working among orphanages in a deprived part of Buenos Aires known as the Hidden City, with a volunteer group named L.I.F.E - (Luchemos para una Infancia Feliz y con Esperanza: We Strive for a Childhood with Happiness and Hope.) I was working with children between the ages of 5 and 12 more or less. Although they had very little educational background, it was our duty to impart what we could upon them; it required immense diligence and effort considering many of the children were unwilling to listen, let alone learn. However, this difficult but extremely rewarding opportunity provided me with teaching skills that cannot be underestimated. Namely, the ability to form a positive relationship with the child so as to ensure the best can be achieved.

Tutoring Approach:

As alluded to in the previous section, my approach to tutoring requires the formation of a positive relationship between tutor and tutored. I believe it is essential that there is rapport between both parties, in order to ensure that the tutored performs to their capability. As is nature, people are more willing to learn for those who they respect and like - precisely the opposite occurs if someone dreads tutoring. Educationally speaking, my approach is well structured, but varies greatly depending on the age. Regardless, it will always be in accordance with set examination boards and/or specific entrance exams. My exact approach is more easily demonstrated via e-mail once I know the specifics, and consequently can tailor accordingly.

Personal Description:
I am 24 years old and currently studying Popular Music at university. Once I have achieved my degree my intention is to apply for a PGCE so I can pursue a career as a music teacher. I have been studying music for over 10 years and considered as a professional musician. My primary instrument is my voice, however I also know how to play the guitar, bass and can read music. In my spare time I love to paint and sketch, read, watch movies and play video games.

Teaching Experience:

For the past two years I have been teaching singing and music theory at my local music shop where I teach children and adults. I have 3 nieces who I have been tutoring, the eldest is 16 who recently took her GCSE exams, I tutored her in English, Maths, Science, and Music. I have been tutoring my younger nieces in Maths, History, and Science.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to get to know my students and find out what they are interested in so that I can associate it with the subject that I am teaching. I try to make my students feel at ease as I learnt that when students feel like they are under too much pressure they can find it difficult to concentrate and remember important information. When teaching singing I always let the student decide what songs we study as this helps with their confidence and builds association memory (they remember certain techniques because of the songs they appear in). One of my nieces was learning about the Romans at school and she really liked the story of Boudica, so in her tutoring sessions we put together a booklet on what life was like in Britain when she was alive. Although the booklet was not about Boudica my niece was motivated to find information about that time because she wanted to know how Boudica would have lived. I really enjoy teaching and I feel like it comes naturally because of this.
