Whilst I was an undergraduate I gave private tuition in English when I was living in France on my year abroad, teaching a 4 year old, a 30 year old and also 2 18 year olds who were preparing for their baccalaureat.

I then did an introduction to tefl course as part of my final year degree course in French and Spanish.

At the end of my undergraduate degree, I spent a month shadowing teachers at a secondary shool based near Bristol (Backwell School) where I also assisted the teachers in some lessons and conducted some of my own French classes.

Tutoring Approach:
I intend to tailor make my tutoring to fit the pupil's needs and goals. This would be ascertained in the first lesson. Then, I will set out a list of subject areas to be covered in the following weeks of lessons, spending time to prepare each lesson beforehand. Hi, I'm Emma! I'm 24 and a native of Boston, Massachusetts, though I've lived in Cambridge for a few years now. I hold degrees from Cambridge University (English) and Harvard University (Classics and Anthropology) and will start my Ph.D at Cambridge in the fall. (It's in Renaissance literature, and most of my research is on Shakespeare's theatre company and Elizabethan performance conventions). From September-December 2007 I was in Tokyo, studying Japanese and teaching English language and literature courses to students at Nihon University. Now I'm back in Cambridge, working various jobs (teaching and otherwise), and am very keen to meet more students and get more teaching experience!

In my free time, I see a lot of theatre (or as much as I can afford...) and a lot of ballet, write dance reviews for an online journal, and read cookbooks compulsively. I'm also an ex-competitive swimmer and water polo player and try to get to the pool as much as possible. I've also become increasingly curious about open-water swimming...

Teaching Experience:
While at Harvard I worked as a trained undergraduate tutor at the Writing Centre, helping students in all courses to gain confidence and independence in their college writing. While I was happy to help with specific assignments and particular details, I tended to focus more on larger issues of personal style, argumentative and organisational strategies, and critical thinking. Beyond these more formal tutoring arrangements, I copy-edited and proofread several of my friends' senior theses (dissertations). I also tutored some local children in beginners' and intermediate Latin grammar. [I studied Latin in school from age 12-18 and took several university-level classes in Latin poetry and prose. While my formal education in Classics ended in my second year at university, I use Latin quite often in my studies in Renaissance lit, so my grammar skills have stayed up to scratch.]

More recently, I've taught ESL courses (elementary->intermediate level) for Select English in Cambridge, and freelanced as a proficiency-level English conversation tutor. While in Tokyo I led free-conversation courses for Japanese university students and assisted in teaching classes in English literature and art.

Tutoring Approach:
Well, I suppose that my basic approach to tutoring has something to do with taking students very seriously, and always treating them as the valuable, independent minds that they are.... so of course, my tutoring sessions tend to be very interactive & founded on personal interest and respect. I have observed that a great deal of tutoring -- certainly in writing and literature, probably in any subject that requires critical thinking of some sort -- is actually about boosting the student's confidence, and dissolving his/her inhibiting deference to phony obstacles and phantom authorities. It's about showing students that they actually have all the necessary resources and abilities to express themselves cogently, to clarify their thinking and defend their convictions, and to cope with all the truth they observe --> and that they should WANT to do this!

While I am happy to focus on particular assignments or questions, my goal is to make all my students more confident, efficient, and effective writers and thinkers. I also try to show students (by example if nothing else) that the subjects really can be FUN, and that studying the arts -- by translating a passage, critiquing a poem, writing a short essay, whatever -- is one of the fundamental ways that we learn about ourselves, as well as the world around us.

Teaching Experience:
Although I do not have any professional Teaching experience but I did teach privately. My main strength lies in understanding a student's need and I believe as a teacher I should be able to find out that in order to help the pupil. I therefore believe in one-on-one tuition.
In a class it is not possible to teach that way. I also believe that no one student is better than the other, it is some the technique that they need to apply in order to do well in an examination. As a teacher i believe i am the one who can teach a how to make learnings fun and not boring by giving him or her too much of homework. In maths especially, you can never solve all the problems and prepare for an examination.

Tutoring Approach:
As i have discussed above, i also feel good if i can pass on or impart with knowledge that i had gained. I like to see young student to learn, but not in a fashion where they don't enjoy what they are learning. I want to make sure that my student to enjoy as well as learn what he or she has to learn.

About Julian:
My name is Julian Waterfield and I have been teaching Religious Studies for a number of years in England, teaching pupils from 11-18 as well as some work in primary schools. I'm new to Belfast, but don't worry - the English and NI systems are very similar!

I've also got tutoring experience in intensive Easter revision courses as well as being an examiner at A-level (see below for more details). Married, with no children and three cats, I live in East Belfast.

Teaching Experience:
Head of department in secondary schools near Oxford and in Durham, teaching 11-18s from 2003-2008.

Senior examiner for Philosophy of Religion at A-level, marking a range of AS and A2 papers.

Regular Easter revision tutor with a major tuition company, providing intensive support for AS and A2 level students in all major papers within the subject (Philosophy, Ethics, Old and New Testaments, World Religions, Church History and so on...).

Tutoring Approach:
The most important thing is to assess your needs before making a decision about what to do and how to approach things. I support a skills-based approach rather than what simply amounts to memorising without understanding. I prefer working with individuals or small groups than larger groups when it comes to tutoring.

I can support what is being done in school or provide 'from scratch' tuition prior to exams.

I am happy to support online or else to tutor at my home (East Belfast) or yours. Please note that a mileage surcharge applies if I have to travel over 5 miles.

About Nicole:
Hi, I'm an Italian native speaker now living in Belfast to complete my studies (MA in Irish Studies at Queen's). I attended a language school and my BA is in foreign languages, thus I'd like to keep in touch with the languages I studied and make it a part-time job to help me finance my studies at the same time.

Teaching Experience:
In the period Sept. 2005- Aug. 2008 I worked as a private tutor in different subjects, mainly languages, but also Latin, Italian, English, French and Spanish Literature.

Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring is very flexible, mainly depending on the student level, personality and needs. It might be based eother on classical grammar lessons or on a more conversational approach.

About Jacki:
I am a mother of 4 children who loves gardening, walking, reading and history. I discovered history many years ago, and decided to study further for my own interest. Then I was hooked as I discovered the exciting tales of our past, both good and bad, Studying history opened up a whole new outlook both on the past and the present day. History makes it possible to understand so much more of the world around us.

My own children could tell you that history can be fun.

Teaching Experience:
I have tutored history at GCSE, AS and A2 level for seven years now, following the curriculum of the required examining board (OCR, AQA, Edexcel). I usually tutor one to one, but also have. experience at tutoring small groups of two and three.

I also have some experience in the college environment with groups of five students.

I have a good record of helping the student acquire the grade they need, and in many cases reaching an even higher standard than they expected.

Tutoring Approach:
The role of the tutor is to expand and explain in more depth something the student has already learnt in the classroom.

My approach is to ask the students questions to make them realise that they do in fact know the answer, but perhaps lack the confidence to see that. Then I encourage the student to verbally expand on the subject. I might also give them a piece of work that we would work through together, with the student doing most of the thinking. If the subject matter is particularly difficult I will read my notes while the student listens, and then we will work through the notes again together.

I have been working as a qualified primary school teacher for the last 3 years and tutoring out of school hours for 18 months. As I am a newly qualified teacher my training is new and up to date with the latest ideas and methodologies.

Tutoring Approach:
I can tutor for all primary school subjects including Numeracy, Literacy, Science and Reading. I can tutor all abilities from those that need a little push in the right direction or those who need help building their self confidence in their own ability. I prefer to tutor at the pupils home and recommend that the tutoring session lasts no longer than 1 hour.
