View Alli's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Alli: Alli is artistic director of theatre company, PEST, which specialises in creating theatre that is rooted in the communities that have stories that need to be told. She has acted professionally for eleven years, toured internationally and recently started directing. She has travelled to 36 different countries and worked as either an actress, director or teacher of English as a foreign language in most of them. She was based in London for 10 years but in May 07 she moved home to Scotland and now lives in Glasgow. She believes that drama is an important and underrated resource for developing confidence, communication and greater understanding of each other and our global neighbours. |
Teaching Experience: Alli has taught English as a Foreign Lannguage privately and in schools in Peru, Australia and London. She has also tutored young adults preparing them for drama school auditions and three of these young adults have received places on accredited drama school courses in London. She has tutored in Drama for the Arts Factory during the National Theatre of Scotland 2007 Exchange, the Lyceum Youth Theatre for NT Connections 2008 and Artists in Exile for Black History Month. Alli also works for the Princes Trust in Glasgow teaching drama skills to young people who are not in full time education, employment or training. And a big part of her work with PEST is taking anti-racism drama workshops into all classes in Glasgow across greater Glasgow. |
Tutoring Approach: I am a firm believer that if you are laughing you are learning. This applies to both learning EFL and drama. If we feel comfortable enough to laugh then we feel comfortable enough to make mistakes and if we make mistakes then we learn from them and with time and patience won't make them again. Different skills are required for working with children, young adults and adults. But no matter what the age - games are really important - sometimes even more important the older you get! |

View Diane's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Diane: I am a recently qualified language teacher who has a flair and passion for modern languages. I believe its very important for children to have a knowledge of a modern language no matter how little. I am dedicated and reliable in everything I do and believe in using varied teaching techniques to aid learning. I am also very liberal and flexible in my teaching. I have taught in various schools as part of my PGCE as well as having tutored a 4year old, 16 year old, adult groups in business and even an 89 year old. I worked as a foreign language assistant in France in 2004 where I taught English. |
Teaching Experience: I have completed my PGCE in modern languages in June 2007 and through my training, I have taught in a variety of mainstream secondary and primary schools in both England and Northern Ireland. I am familiar with KS2/KS3/GCSE and Level syllabus and I am willing to use these solely or incorporate them into my teaching. I have also one to one experience with pupils of all ages and also adults. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that teaching in small groups/individually is the most effective way to learn. Obviously I will asses the students needs and plan accordingly but I am also willing to take requests of lesson content. I use a variety of resources and games to aid remembering grammar and vocabulary and also incorporate the four skills of languages (reading, writing, listening and speaking) into each of my lesson. Each lesson I teach is carefully planned out and flows in a way to capture the students attention at all times and prevent distractions or boredom. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Mira: I have recently graduated from my second degree and am now looking to further my teaching experience with some intention to return to academia. I come from London though my parents are Arabic and I enjoy the diversity this offers me. I am passionate about philosophy and literature, reading and writing. I find working with children challenging, fun and very rewarding. |
Teaching Experience: Common entrance (11 year old) Maths and English Common entrance French (13 year old) Creative Writing (7 year old) GCSE English Literature (15 year old) GCSE English Language (16 year old) |
Tutoring Approach: I think the most important thing for any student to be able to do is ask questions. I make it a point to instill courage and confidence in my tutees because in my opinion these are the building blocks of learning, in any subject. My sessions tend to be relaxed and informal, though I aim to cover much ground per tutorial. The intensity of study can be decided by the student according to his or her needs, experience and age. Above all I think learning should be fun and liberating. From my experience both as a student and tutor I think I make an able, friendly and enthusiastic tutor. |

View Pavee's Profile
Types of Tutoring: From their home / Online
| About Pavee: I am a 21 year old woman who has just completed her BSc Psychology degree and is now completing a Masters degree in Research Methods in Cognitive Neuropsychology. I have attended prestigeous schools and sixth form, where I have achieved high grades in all the major exams, prior to entering university. I am also a fluent French speaker and have top GCSE and AS-levels grades in this subject to go alongside this. I enjoy teaching children, both younger and older, and helping them become more comfortable with their school work so that they are able to be more comfortable in the school environment. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored young children (Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 3) in the past in French, Maths, Science, English and English as a Foreign Language successfully. I am still in contact with most of the children I have taught and they have done extremely well since. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that in order for tutoring to be successful, a bond has to be formed between pupil and tutor, whereby the pupil feels comfortable in expressing their concerns and the tutor will help them as well as encourage them. I respect children and hope that this will be returned but I do believe that I would have to work towards this. I am a friendly and outgoing person but am able to be strict as and when required! As I would like to enjoy the tutoring eperience, I hope to make the sessions enjoyable for students too. Clear guidance for study during the session, and any extra homework, will be given each week. This will enable tutor, student and parents to monitor progress. It also means that the sessions can be flexible to accommodate areas which need extra help. |

| About Alfred: I recently graduated from Oxford University with a first class degree in French and Philosophy. I am currently studying for a Masters at UCL. I am keen to share my enthusiasm for my subject. I would also be very willing to help students prepare for Oxbridge Interviews in French, Philosophy or indeed any Humanities subject. An experienced teacher and mentor, I am well placed to help both those students who feel they need extra help and those who wish to develop their academic potential beyond the confines of the school curriculum. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught English as a foreign language to children of all ages (4-18) in China. I have also tutored students one on one in France. I also have experience as a mentor for a student experiencing difficulties at school, again in France. |
Tutoring Approach: I am keen to develop the students' passion for the subject, using material geared to their interests and abilities. I believe good grammar and vocabulary are important, but that it is first essential to bring a language alive. I like to do considerable work on speaking fluency and building confidence. However, I will of course tailor lessons to the needs of the individual student, and am well aware, for instance, of the rigors of the grammatical tests students face in Oxford entrance exams. With regard to interview preparation, I believe it is most important to work on targeted extra curricular reading and confidence in an interview setting. |

I enjoy learning about the world around me, which is why I chose a science degree, everything seems to hold a wide eyed wonder for me! Saying that I am very down to earth, and work very hard. I love meeting new people and have the ability to read people which makes me very personable and friendly as well as empathic. I am considering becoming a teacher and remember very clearly the amazing feeling I always got when I understood something for the first time and I want to help others experience that too. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught various people. I was in the ATC for a time and I taught the new cadets about airplanes and how to do drill. I was also involved with a programme at University where we visited schools to teach practical science, particularly chemistry. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that everyone is different and so there can be no one method of teaching, but it has to be interesting with plenty of examples and illustrations. Communication is also key and I will take time to find out where the student needs help and target those areas as well as getting to know them so I understand their needs as well as possible. If the national curriculum needs to be followed I will ensure that it is, and I will utilise various sources to ensure my knowledge, and therefore the student's, is up to date. |

| About Barry: Hello. I'm Barry Bennett. I'm 30 years old and I live in Shipley, West Yorkshire. I have recently completed by History (BA Hons) Degree. I decided to undertake higher education at the age of 27 after a number of years working for the Royal Mail in various positions. I am planning to begin teacher training in the next year or two. As well as my academic endevours I work on a voluntary basis with an organisation called the Starfish Project which helps people to learn how to control stammering. I have recently joined the Bradford Astronomical Society and I'm about to become involved with the Thoresby Society, a historical organisation based in Leeds. I am a supporter of Bradford City Football Club (you can laugh if you like!!) and one of my main interests is cooking. I have also travelled quite extensively and have written about my experiences in far away lands. |
Teaching Experience: In 2004, just before I began my undergraduate studies in Leeds, I worked for a time as a teacher at a school in Bangalore, India. Also, during my time studying at Leeds Trinity and All Saints College, where I obtained my University of Leeds degree, I worked as a 'Student Ambassador.' Part of my work was to look after parties from local secondary schools who came to take part in our 'Higher Education Experience Days.' These were designed to inform and encourage school age students about the transition to higher education and undergraduate study. |
Tutoring Approach: My aim is to come across as easy going and approachable to my students, but at the same time to encourage them to be constantly pushing the boundaries of their skills and knowledge. Also, one of my main charactersitics as a teacher/tutor is to encourage students to consider why what they are learning is relevant to their lives, as well as being just a way to gain a qualification. |

| About Peter: I am an experienced and creative educator currently finishing a Master's at King's College London and teaching in East London. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching for about seven years. I have taught both in the UK and in Ireland and have helped students to achieve full marks in A level history exams as well as coursework. I have also helped students to achieve full marks for coursework and exam modules in A level English. My GCSE students regularly achieve high marks and I teach many primary students at a local tuition centre on Saturdays. |
Tutoring Approach: I assess students as to their particular needs in either History, English, or both. Together we set achievable, but ambitious goals and with regular feedback and proven techniques and skills, I help students to achieve their full potential in a given subject. |
