About Thomas:
My name is Tom. I am a part time Masters student in Social and Political Thought at Sussex University, as well as volunteer co-ordinator for both the Green Party and CSV and musician.

I am an accomplished writer, having written reviews for online magazine Broadwaybaby.com, as well as producing poetry, stories and lyrics. I love music and am an extremely able singer and guitarist. I am also a good cook, love to tell jokes and am extremely passionate about environmental issues.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked with young people in volunteer co-ordination at CSV, where I have been responsible for taking part in community action projects that often require instruction of volunteers. I have also led Green Party instruction in canvassing, data entry and leafleting. I relate extremely well to people who share my interests, and enjoy a job that emotionally rewards and satisfies the mind.

I also have a Performance Certificate in Singing, which makes me qualified to teach this subject. Moreover, I have previously volunteered to assist in the teaching of music students.

Tutoring Approach:

I am happy to teach in the way most suitable for the student, as well as suggest alternative teaching methods such as visits to relevant learning facilities. It is my belief that a change of context can often improve learning.

I also do not believe that a long lecture will suit many pupils. Visual and audial tools should be offered to those who learn well in this way, and I am happy to investigate the possibilities of using them in tutorials. I will happily make tapes/cds for students who want to record lessons for reference. I am a confident and stimulating speaker and will happily chalk and talk if this is a preffered method of teaching too.

About Sam:
I am a recent graduate from the University of Sussex with a BA Joint Hons Degree in History and French. I have a strong passion for history and hope to do a Masters in the future. I have studied French since school and have lived in France on several occasions. I speak and write French fluently.

I am a very friendly, approachable and creative person who enjoys meeting people. I enjoy a variety of different sports and moreover play the piano to a high level.

I have a good deal of work experience in a variety of jobs that have developed my skills and abilities. I am currently working at the BBC on the Saturday Sports Show.

Teaching Experience:

Although I do not have any formal teaching experience, I do believe that I have the attributes to be a successful tutor. Whilst living in France, I tutored French students studying English. It was an experience that gave me a great deal of satisfaction as I helped my students progress.

I am very eager to help more students progress and succeed with their studies.

Tutoring Approach:

Having been fortunate to have had a good education, I have an awareness of different teaching methods. I am aware that a method that works for myself, may not necessarily be appropriate for another student. However, I believe that I would be able to provide a personalised teaching service to each student upon getting to know the student.

Furthermore, I believe that learning should not be a chore. There are of course aspects that require hard work, but ideally learning and teaching should be an enjoyable experience.

About Darren:
I am PhD student at Cardiff University. My broad background subject is Media Studies, but my main area of interest is media, politics, and journalism (theory). I have strong reading, writing, and research skills so I can offer help in a variety of disciplines.

Teaching Experience:

I teach seminars to undergraduate degree students at Cardiff University, so I do already have experience of teaching (and marking) in my field of interest. The degree that I teach on is Journalism, Film and Media, which concentrates on a variety of media-based, political, and social topics.

I have also been a student mentor at secondary education level so I have one to one experience of tutoring from this work as well.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is similar to that of my class-based seminars: I teach in a friendly, relaxed, encouraging and open atmosphere. I like students to engage by exploring their own ideas and questions as much as possible to ensure that they are fully involved in gaining an understanding of the subject concerned.

I always take a constructive and positive approach to teaching to ensure that students feel comfortable and confident and can learn in a productive environment at all times.

About Sophie:
I am a french native speaker, I have been in edinburgh since the beginning of July. I am friendly, patient and dynamic, I do enjoy sharing my knowledge of the french language. I have the capacity to adapt myself easily to make people feel comfortable in their learning.

Teaching Experience:

I have been helping children with difficulties in a french secondary school for two years. I was in charge of several groups of pupils aged from 11 to 16, I was teaching different subjects, such as history, english, maths, french, geography. My aim was to find a way to make the pupils understand what they had missed in their courses.
I have been working with children for 8 years in different area; as a group leader, as a teacher, as a student in psychology, as a baby-sitter.
I have a french diploma in children care, I have a degree in psychology.

Tutoring Approach:

The best way to learn a language is to enjoy it, to feel it like a way to communicate with different people. I think it is really essential to like the way you are learning, that will make you improve quickly and easily!
I am able to give classical french courses but I really do think that tutoring is a place for something different. It seems to be the perfect time to practise french for real and to share all the knowledge of this language.

About Lee:
I am 31 years of age. I am laid-back and easy going person. I pride myself on my relationships with people. I like to think I get on well with everyone! I love travelling, reading and researching for my masters degree. I love my job and am eager to research new methods of teaching and exciting ways for children to learn. If my lessons don't motivate children to learn, then as far as I'm concerned I've failed! I also love sport, playing squash, cricket and visiting the gym frequently!

Teaching Experience:

I have currently got a job as a Deputy Headteacher and have been teaching primary school-aged children since 1999. I have taught from year 3 up to year 5 but had an active hand in the administration of SAT's across my primary school. I worked as a tutor between 1999 and 2001, once tutoring four students simultaneously. All of which achieved the best possible results for them (2 A*, C and B at A level). So, my current record is 100% successful. I also teach gifted and talented pupils on a Saturday morning at my local university. I love teaching!! I have also taught children in America in 1998 when I embarked on the Camp America Programme!

Tutoring Approach:

I think the most important thing about tutoring is the relationship between student and pupil. I always spend a bit of time finding out about each other - what they're in to, likes/dislikes etc. I also invest a bit of time finding out about preferred learning style - as there is no point 'talking the person to death' if their preferred learning style is kineasthetic or visual. After that, it's important to find out what the student likes/dislikes, finds easy/hard with respect to the syllabus. Then it's important that the materials I provide supplement the materials the student has from class. I then empower the student to make a few decisions about what he/she finds tricky or challenging. I will of course have all the necessary materials available to hand, e.g. past papers. I also like the student to have a checklist of what has been covered/not covered etc. As far as homework is concerned, I appreciate that the student will be getting loads from college so I organise this with them depending on what their capabilities are.

About Ciara:
I am a young and enthusiastic musician and teacher. I have been playing piano now for 20 years (I started when I was 6). I also play flute and saxophone. I thoroughly enjoy music and am passionate about my subject! As I'm also a trained primary school teacher I can offer tuition across a wide range of subjects, in particular maths, english and science!

Teaching Experience:

Currently Head of Music in Belfast school. I have been a fully qualified classroom teacher for 3 years now. I obtained my music degree at the University of Ulster and went on to complete my PGCE primary teaching qualification at Canterbury ChristChurch University College, Kent.
I have been teaching piano privately for years, have completed 3 long-term temporary teaching contracts at 3 different schools in Northern Ireland - at secondary, grammar and integrated schools and have just secured a permanent position as the Head of Music in a local Belfast school. I believe that learning should be fun and the person I am helping out is central to my teaching methods.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that learning should be fun. Whether you're learning piano, getting help with your GCSE composition, improving your English, Maths or Science, its essential that you are enjoying what you are doing and learning new skills along the way. I believe that our academic system is unfair to many students and too many pupils arrive at and then leave secondary school with poor literacy and numeracy skills and consequently with a lowered self-esteem. I want to be a part of helping young people to achieve their maximum potential and to feel empowered and confidently positive about themselves as they make their way into our demanding adult world.

About Gregory:
I am an engaged and professional Redlands based Maths tutor, willing to teach G.C.S.E and AS/A2 Level. I have a real passion for Maths which I have continued to study at Bristol University, and want to encourage other people in this much maligned, and often badly taught subject.

I am willing to travel to most of Bristol, or if easier for the student teach at my own house in Redlands, and can set up sessions in the evenings and weekends, or certain parts of the day if convenient.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored for around 2 years, helping people through their AS/A2 Level exams.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is about the visualisation of each question, where just the answer is not enough, but the process to get there is the important part. I think this is something that is often missed out when Maths is taught traditionally, and is congruent with the experiences I've had with previous students.

About Kirsty:
I am young, friendly, enthusiastic and experienced tutor. I have lived abroad for over 5 years so I am very open minded and value diversity.

I am currently completing an Msc in Community Learning and Development and enjoying it very much.

As a trained artist I enjoy making and exhibiting my work in Scotland. I am a very active person, I love snowboarding and rock climbing and I think my varied interests have stood me in good stead in my experience thus far - good analogies for teaching!

Teaching Experience:

Over four years teaching Art and English as a second language in Japan - to students aged 2 to 82!

In Japan I taught in both private and group settings and trained colleagues to facilitate learning. Experience of teaching business English and preparing students to sit TOEFL, IELTS and other English Language tests.

In the UK I have taught art and craft in children's classes and young people art school portfolio preparation.

I have extensive experience of working with children, young people and migrants in a community setting, teaching everything from global citizenship to outdoor education.

Tutoring Approach:

As an arts graduate I am extremely creative and like to apply this to my teaching.

While working in Japan I set up the community centre in which I worked and created the programme and curriculum according to the expressed needs of the students; I think this is very important - to respond to what the students wish to learn.

I am patient and tolerant of mistakes and attitudes, while encouraging and hopeful about progress. I am very laid back and like to have a joke - I would like to think that my students enjoy learning with me, as I have certainly enjoyed learning with them!

About Rhona:
My name is Rhona Gray and I am 20 years old. I am currently studying Pharmacology at the University of Portsmouth. I passed 11 GCSE's grades A*-B, and four A-levels including Maths, Biology, Chemistry (A/S) and P.E. (A/S). As part of my degree I have continued to study Maths, Biology and Chemistry so my knowledge of the subjects are up to date. I also completed a Spanish course as an elective which enabled me to further understand the grammar and improve my fluency.
I take part in various sports and am part of a local church in Portsmouth.

Teaching Experience:

Although I do not have any professional teaching experience I have lead sessions at youth groups for children of all ages, which has involved preparing suitable activities and ensuring the sessions run smoothly and effectively.
I have done a lot of traveling with groups from the church (including Romania and Costa Rica), where I have lead teaching sessions for local children, and have even taught a group of 4-18 year old's in Spanish.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that every pupil is different and has an individual style of learning, to which I hope to be able to adapt as we get to know each other. I intend to set goals that are in reach but that will stretch the pupil, so that they will become encouraged as they begin to see results. I will be guided by the national curriculum but will try to put the information across in a way that the pupil can understand.

About Glenn:
A dynamic and young teacher, with a breadth of experience, I am passionate about the development and growth of young minds from all different backgrounds. My commitment towards a new challenge is unquestionable, as I believe self belief and determination are the keys to success. These are qualities that I always aim to bring out in my students and strongly feel that the best way to lead is by example.

Teaching Experience:

Having taught in a number of schools, predominantly in the Hertfordshire area, my teaching experience has been with students from 11 - 18 years old. Within this age range, I have taught (and still am teaching) from the A* level to learners who are lower in ability, some with special educational needs. This has enhanced my skills in terms of differentiation. I currently teach English at key stage 3 and 4 (11 - 16) but have had experience teaching English language and literature at AS and A level. In terms of Media, Communication Studies and Sociology, my expertise ranges from GCSE to A level.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach towards tutoring is one that is tailored to the tutee/s needs and draws on their preferred learning style. I am adaptable in terms of working on a one to one basis or in small groups. I am a firm believer in the benefits of assessment, both formative and summative, as this will ensure that progress is being made. Independent study is also vital to the success of a student, something that I encourage and a skill that I aim to develop with all tutee/s.
