Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Francesca: I have graduated from univeristy but am returning for the 2009/2010 academic year to do a PGCE is secondary education, I will be teaching GCSE English and A Level Psychology and Sociology. I am very familiar with the new policies schools have brought in, and have a fresh approach to dealing with exam stress and coping with workloads as having only recently completed my own studies. I am a very friendly, confident and conscientious person and am a firm believer in individuals doing their best and not feel pressured by too many expectations. I think it is very important to enjoy what you are learning otherwise it is very easy to get bored. I therefore endeavor to help those from a young age up to degree level to achieve what they can to the best of their ability. |
Teaching Experience: My teaching experience ranges from listening to reception aged children read to helping peers with research. I have a great deal of classroom experience as a student and now want to help others and gain the experience I need for my PGCE. |
Tutoring Approach: I feel it is very important not to try and do too much at once, I encourage regular breaks and distractions to help refocus the mind. I have a lot of knowledge about the psychology of learning and different learning methods. I like to see what type of learner the student is, for example using a dictaphone to record important information, and mind maps to make connections between different subjects. As a former student I understand that some areas of learning can be very dull, by talking through the subject and encouraging a subjective interpretation guides the student to focus on their own ideas, and this I feel encourages a sense of achievement. |

View Ravinder's Profile
Types of Tutoring: From their home
| About Ravinder: I am a 23 year old qualified teacher, just having completed my PGCE from Oxford University. I completed a BA in geography at University College London and am happy to tutor geography up to any level, as well as providing general advice on preparing for exams and university applications. I have a tremendous enthusiasm for my subject, which spurred my initial interest towards teaching. I am eager to help young people to understand any difficulties that they are experiencing in geography and am keen to help them reach their full potential. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught in two schools during my teacher training. Both, were extremely different and have given me different perspectives on teaching and learning styles at a variety of age ranges. Throughout my training, I have attempted to provide guidance and support and to improve the students' self-confidence in their geographical abilities. The PGCE has taught me to break down concepts and methodological processes, interact with students and hopefully, to inspire them to continue into higher education and with their geographical studies. |
Tutoring Approach: The ongoing intellectual stimulation, potential creativity and sheer variety within the profession have reinforced my commitment to teaching. My students' success in their exams has only served to emphasise my desire to work with young people and to further articulate my passion for geography by breaking down and presenting complex information in interesting ways and targeting it according to the abilities of the student. |

| About Roger: I have recently graduated from the University of Central Lancashire in Chinese and International Business. I have lived and worked in Beijing for one year and have a great passion for the Chinese language and culture. However, I have noticed that the more I think in Chinese, the worse my English gets :). I myself have studied Chinese for around 8 years and have always lived with Chinese people. My partner is also Chinese and to be honest we live very Chinese lives. I can also teach you some Chinese cooking as I love to cook Chinese food. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught privately to university students studying Chinese and have also been involved in teaching Chinese children Mandarin who mainly speak Cantonese and English at home. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to use books that are friendly to the user and am happy to use any material provided by the student. One to one teaching is better and it can be relaxed or more formal depending on the students requirements. I am very passionate about students being their best and who are also willing to put the time and effort into learning a very difficult language. |

View Alexander's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Alexander: Hi, I have recently finished all the academic qualifications that entitle me to become a barrister, however I have not yet obtained a pupillage, which is the final apprentice like stage required before I am allowed to practice. As such I have at least a year of freedom and I would like to do a bit of teaching. Prior to studying the law I did my A levels in double maths, physics and chemistry and completed an undergraduate degree in Physics at Imperial College London. So I am more than capable of teaching those subjects to a high level. |
Teaching Experience: While I don't have much specific teaching experience, having only casually tutored a few times while I was at university, I have plenty of experience explaining complicated subjects, both scientific and legal, to lay people. Not only that but I have also had extensive advocacy training. Not only that but both my parents are teachers and so i have been around the profession all my life and I am therefore confident that I will be a very capable teacher. |
Tutoring Approach: There are two main approaches I would use for tutoring and it would depend on the client as to which one would be more appropriate. The first would be for the tutee to ask me about any specific areas that they are having problems with and for me to help them through it by through explanation and then practice in problem solving. The second would be a more general approach where I would dictate the content of the lessons, based on the syllabus, in an attempt to give a more general overview and therefore a better understanding of the subject. Additionally I would at all times, be approachable and try to keep the material as relevant, enjoyable and engaging as possible. |

View Nicholas's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Nicholas: I have been teaching for the last four years both inside and outside the school environment. I have a strong understanding of academia having only recently finished my studies. I have been tutoring and teaching throughout this time and have been successful within a number of disciplines. English, Drama and performance are where the majority of my experience lies but I have also taught Maths and Science up to GCSE level. |
Teaching Experience: I have been tutoring for a year now as well as running a successful Drama Group. Whilst studying at Central I have helped two other students with their Drama School auditions as well as conducting 2 Drama workshops in Schools. These were tailored to the curriculum and were well received. I have also work as a learning assistant in a large secondary school where I was responsible for monitoring the learning objectives of several pupils. I devised teaching strategies to aid the pupils both inside and outside the classroom. This gave me a good understanding of the curriculum at Key stage 3-5. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe in developing a relationship with pupils in order to teach in a one-on-one environment. Pupils learn in different ways and have a diverse range of strengths and weaknesses ; I believe it is the task of a good tutor to understand these and develop this into an effective teaching environment. Furthermore, I find my age (I'm 24) a useful tool in relating to the students which undoubtedly yields better results. |

| About Teresa: I am a friendly and easy going person who believes that everyone has the ability to learn. I am passionate about the outdoors and through teaching in schools I have often used the outdoors as a learning environment. I have a degree in music and my PGCE primary is a mathematics specialism, although I am happy to home tutor in all areas of the primary curriculum. |
Teaching Experience: I am a qualified primary school teacher with 6 years experience working in two contrasting primary schools. I am now employed teaching year 7's in a secondary school and working with young people who find learning challenging. I have a current CRB and am a member of the General Teaching Council. |
Tutoring Approach: My primary approach to teaching is that if children are enjoying what they are learning then the information is more likely to be retained. I believe that it is important for a child to be involved in their own learning, encouraging the children to identify the areas that they are weaker in also enables the children to learn. By also finding the areas that the children are successful in and from there drawing out the skills that are making them successful and working with the child to transfer these skills in order to be achieve! |

| About Frederick: Experienced teacher of Music for over 22 years, available to teach from Primary to Sixth Form level and beyond. Specialisms in Theory,Composition and Musical Analysis. I am also able to offer tuition in English up to GCSE level and Computer Studies up to KS3. |
Teaching Experience: From September 1988 until December 1997,I taught music at Poynton County High School as a full-time member of the Music Department. In addition to classes in Years 7 to 9,I also taught classes at both GCSE and A Levels. I also held important pastoral responsibilities as a form tutor, taking one form from Year 7 through to Year 13. My particular strengths lie in communicating my enthusiasm for music, whether through Listening, Performing or Composing, three key elements in the approach to teaching music. I have a very wide knowledge of all types of musical styles and this is coupled with my specialist skills in composing and arranging music. I am a very competent pianist and percussionist and I enjoy performing in concerts with a number of local orchestras, including The Stockport Symphony,Gorton Philharmonic and High Peak Orchestras. I have particularly enjoyed conducting/directing the various ensembles during my time at Poynton High School and this is one area which I would like to build on for the future. Since leaving Poynton High School,I have been working as a supply teacher in various schools in and around Manchester,Stockport and Cheshire and from January until early February 2001,I taught music(full-time) at Hyde Technology School,to pupils in Years 7 to 11. I have also undertaken general cover assignments in a number of other schools. I have also undertaken workshops in several schools, involving improvisation, composition and performing. From the beginning of June 2001 until late September,I taught ose College,Hale Barns and at Cheadle Hulme College. These were all short-term (supply) appointments. From January until October 2002,I had a temporary contract as Acting Head of Music at Ashton on Mersey School, teaching classes in Years 7 to 9 and a small group of Year 10 pupils,as well as being a member of the Expressive Arts Faculty. At Ashton,I directed both the School Choir and Concert Band and ran an after-school Keyboard Club. I worked on a new and improved curriculum for Key Stage 3 and I was particularly keen to motivate pupils in Year 9 to build up classes for GCSE Music in Years 10 and 11. I have also taken classes in Years 7 to 10 at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, during November and December 2002, April to May 2003,while the Head of Music was on sick leave. I worked at Eccles Sixth Form College from April until June 2005,teaching Music to students at AS and A2 Levels, including classes in Music Technology. I worked at Aquinas Sixth Form College from September 2005 until August 2008, teaching AS and A2 Music and Music Technology classes,as well as taking a group of 7 GCSE Music students and have initiated a new extra-curricular Percussion Group. I have also helped with the college production of "Guys and Dolls" at Christmas 2005,as well as with "Sweet Charity" in February 2007 and Return to the Forbidden Planet in February 2008,playing percussion in the band. I continue to coach private students for GCSE and AS/A Level examinations and have had two students who both took examinations last summer. Both students passed with good results,my GCSE student attaining an A* for her Music examination. I also offer tuition in piano, keyboard and percussion to interested students. |
Tutoring Approach: Friendly, encouraging approach on a 1-to-1 basis, helping to build up students' confidence and abilities. |

| About Richard: I have had many years in the kitchen design industry. I started by joining a company that manufacturered kitchens and learnt all aspects from cabinet making, to laminating, to veneering, from worktop mitring and then onto installation and finally design. I have had lots of experience in planning and designing kitchens, from the initial measure which is a vital but underestimated part of the process, through to basic design skills and onto selling. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked for a kitchen design software company and gave training courses on the product, this not only involved the actual software, but also general design techniques for kitchens etc. I am now able to teach both the design requirements for kitchens but also the software package. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe in a hands on approach, I would expect my students to be able to carry out the basic tasks of measuring kitchens, planning kitchens by drawing on graph paper and the transferring this to a computer programme. The programme should be fun and I would hope anyone taking part would complete the course and be able to get a job as a kitchen designer. |
