Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Ffiona: I am a 24 year old who works as a freelance presenter of day-long revision and memory skills workshops in schools across the UK. I really enjoy travelling to different parts of the country and the challenge of delivering a workshop to each new group. Each day is very different and I never cease to be surprised! I also work part-time on other projects: I am working on a documentary at the moment and organise arts-based campaign events for young people. I tutored throughout my time at university as I really enjoy teaching and using my language skills. I grew up in Belgium and France so am fluent in French. I studied French as my first language in the International Baccalaureat (equivalent to A-Levels). I am also fluent in Spanish, having lived in Spain and Ecuador. I studied Spanish as part of my university course and spent a year studying at the Law Department of the University of Girona. I would like to tutor in French, Spanish or study skills. My study skills seminars focus on learning about how the mind works, how each individual student's mind works and helping each person to apply this knowledge to find the best way for them to study. |
Teaching Experience: I tutored in French and Spanish throughout my time at university, I have taught students from age 10 right through to university level. I taught English as a second language to adults during my year at the University of Girona. I work as a freelance presenter in schools, delivering workshops on memory & revision techniques. I have worked in a number of schools in London delivering Arts-based Citizenship workshops. |
Tutoring Approach: I really enjoy tutoring and have worked in a number of very diffrent environments, from delivering seminars in schools which have a very formal approach to working with university students who wanted a more informal style of tutoring. I am therefore happy to adapt to your choice of style. Having been trained in revision techniques I am aware of the very different styles of learning that people may have and the importance of understanding this. I can adapt my style of tutoring to your style of learning. I am regularly involved in Film and Theatre projects so I can have quite a creative style of tutoring, finding ways to make the subject more engaging, relevant or understandable to you. |

View Rose's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Rose: I studied French at University College London, graduating in 2003, with a 2:1 class degree. I was awarded a distinction in Spoken French. I have travelled extensively in France and lived in Toulouse for a year, 2001 - 2002. Since my first holiday in France when I was 6 years old I have loved the language, the country and its culture. This enthusiasm always comes across when I teach, I can often win over even the most reluctant of French pupils! |
Teaching Experience: I have been a private tutor in French in Edinburgh for just over a year; on average, during the academic year, teaching 8 - 10 students one-to-one at any one time. Experienced in all levels of tuition: Primary, GSCE, A-Level, Standards, Highers and Advanced Highers. I have also taught a number of adults during this time. Lesson times vary from one hour to an hour and a half depending on the student's requirements. Feedback has been very positive, most of my work comes from recommendations from existing students. Academic improvements in student's work are guaranteed as is a growth in their self-confidence. |
Tutoring Approach: I go with a professional yet informal approach. Especially with school students who have fallen behind in their French and whose confidence is low, I believe it is important to gain their interest and trust in order to efficiently improve their work. I follow curriculam requirements closely in order to effectively prepare them for exam questions but tailor exercises to their age and interests. I balance the work we do together with plenty of independent work for them to build their confidence outwith of working with a tutor. I use the first lesson to gauge the student's level, ask them which particular things they struggle with and from this map out subsequent lesson plans. I balance written, reading, listening and conversational exercises firmly in the believe that overall improvement requires competencies in all areas as they all effect each other: listening will improve your speaking and reading your writing and so on. Patience, professionalism and a sense of humour are vital in my work as a tutor. |

Teaching Experience: Worked as Assistant Professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Technical Head of Nalanda Tuition center for 3 years. Visiting lecturer of reputed engineering college for core subjects of engineering. |

As an experienced tutor, I can provide full notes with numericals, explain theoty with the help of figures and graphs and more over, getting the student command over the derivations and applications of the subject. |

| About Anika: Hi, I provide tutoring in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and in the Nottingham are. I tutor Key Stage 1,2 and 3, 11 + and GCSE. I plan you child's curriculum the first time as a free consultation lesson to get to know your child and the level they currently working at. |
Teaching Experience: I have had a lot of past experience tutoring children of all age groups and in different subjects. Studying Child Psychology allows me to have a different take on tutoring and how it is best for the child to study. I have 3 A levels and 9 GCSES in all relevant teaching subjects. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a very different approach to tutoring. I allow children to let me know their needs and the ability level they think they are currently working at. I can then provide relevant homework and tests to see if they are at that level or where i need to work more to help them achieve their full potential. I also plan their curriculum free for them! This helps me to help the child get the most out of the lesson. I have a wide range of teaching material such as textbooks, games, Cd's, online learning tasks and visual learning. I feel children work best when having a variety of materials to choose from. I make tutoring sessions enjoyable for the child as well as getting the best learning possible out of it. I look forward to working with you and your child! |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About David: I came out of mainstream teaching due to family illness and personal reasons, needing more flexible work time. I've spent my whole career based on developing the knowledge, skills and understanding of young people, and helping them to develop personally as individuals and to find their own future pathway. I am registered with the General teaching Council for England, and a member of the Association for Science Education. I have also been both a staff and Health & Safety representative for the NASUWT, of which I am still a member In addition to teaching I have also been a youth worker for a school-based youth club, and once ran a football club in the Cambridge & District Colts League. Until recently I ran a major Cambridge disco, sound, lighting and laser show business, both as a hobby and an enterprise, and have stage-managed many school productions. I have a holiday cottage on the Norfolk Broads, and a boat on the river in Cambridge and enjoy fishing, boating and just being by the river. |
Teaching Experience: 32 years experience teaching 11-16 years; combined science, physics, chemistry and biology, and 8 years experience teaching Salter's A-level chemistry to 17-18 years, in large state comprehensive schools in Cambs and Suffolk. I have also taught some 11-16 maths. I have been a Head of Subject (Physics) and Head of Year (Yr 8). In my last post, in addition to teaching, I was the Enhancement Manager, organising after school classes and activities to enhance students' quality of school life and involve the local community. I have privately tutored a number of students, whilst also teaching them in school. I am still in contact with a number of ex-tutees and their families, as they have grown up. |
Tutoring Approach: I have an easy relationship with young people, based on mutual trust and understanding, and their confidence in my subject knowledge and ability to teach, rather than authority, rules and discipline. My emphasis is on the students learning, rather than my lecturing. To the student: If you are interested in tuition it is important first to establish compatibility of teaching and learning styles, and therefore an investigative interview or chat with the student (and parents, depending on age of student) would be needed to establish your goals and ambitions, strengths and weaknesses, and establish both knowledge and learning style needs in order to plan an effective scheme of work and assessment which will integrate with your mainstream learning (if in school). It is also important to establish the likely benefit tuition will achieve, given your investment of time and money. |
