Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Lian: I am a twenty three years old and I live in Nottingham. I was originally born in China, but moved to England when I was six years old, and so grew up here. This has resulted in my having a very precise English accent with no regional or overseas accent. I can also speak Mandarin like a native, as my parents have spoken Chinese to me at home, and kept my Mandarin up. I have perfect Beijing pronunciation in Mandarin, with no regional or western accent. I am currently studying part time, in Nottingham University, and working. I have A levels in Maths, Biology, Chemistry, English Literature, and Sociology. I also completed two years of a Neuroscience degree at Aberdeen University, but had to terminate my studies due to financial difficulties. |
Teaching Experience: I have no official teaching experience as of yet, but I have had many unofficial roles in teaching: helping Chinese students at my school, teaching them English. Also, I have an eleven year old brother, and I teach him Maths and English when I am at home. I have also taught course-mates some casual Mandarin. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a very clear and succinct manner when it comes to explaining new concepts. I make sure my students understand what I am trying to teach them, before moving on to something new. I have an organised and conscientious approach to education, with very specific goals and lesson plans. I like to move lessons along at the fastest pace a student can manage, and modify my lesson plans to adjust to that pace. I monitor and change all my attitudes and approaches depending on the skill level of my students. |

View Jenny's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Jenny: I am a patient person who understands that children require plenty of reassurance and guidance to help them to reach their potential. I enjoy teaching all subjects and try to make learning as interesting and as fun as possible. I see myself more as a facilitator for learning rather than the children relying on me to lead all of the time. I find that this really encourages children to investigate, enquire and to gain a thirst for knowledge even at a very young age. I teach new concepts through practical experiences to gain interest and then move on to developing knowledge and understanding. |
Teaching Experience: I am embarking on my second year as a year 1 primary school classroom teacher in Preston. I have previously studied at st. Martin's university in Lancaster and Edgehill university in Ormskirk. During my teacher training and also through supply work, I have taught every year group across key stage 1 and 2 and also in reception as part of the 'transition adjustment' stage in our school. I have experience of teaching children with learning needs such as ADHD, autism, speech and mild behavioural difficulties. I have plenty of resources available for use during lessons and also advice on good quality interactive resources for general use. |
Tutoring Approach: I approach tutoring as I approach everyday classroom teaching; I strive to provide high quality learning experiences tailored to every individual child's needs. I feel it is important to engage in firsthand experiences wherever possible and that children should be involved in deciding learning outcomes and how to achieve them. Good quality feedback is crucial and children need to understand their strengths as well as their areas for development in order to progress and become a successful independent learner. |

| About Leanne: As a student my biggest memory was of my biggest teacher, he expressed his knowledge with enthusiasm, energy and honesty. As a tutor my best achievement is to ensure the knowledge gets there, sits there and stays there using a holistic approach to learning. Private tuition or assistance with learning, form filling or preparing for any event in your life has become an integral part of our educational society today. My belief is that the bonus of having one to one contact with a individual tutor or trainer is that you can agree and set the pace, ensuring a complete level of understanding throughout. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked with age groups from 5 to 90 through varying contracts including Connexions Worcester College of Technology MYHATT Foyer Working Links Yelverton Golf Academy Plymouth City Council Adult Education Cornwall County Council Primary Education Cornwall County Council Intensive Support Team for SEN learners at Primary Level Cloisters Tutoring & Educational Services I have an up to date enhanced CRB. References are available - here is some of the feedback I have received: " Thank you for all your patience, kindness and hard work this year, we have all seen Suzy* become more confident and happy at school. I know she enjoys her days with you and her keenness to learn is infectious!" Mrs C, parent of KS2 student, 2007 "The children have really benefited from your enthusiasm and support." Mr K, parent of Numeracy student, 2008 "From Level 2 to Level 4 in one year! And so very much more!" "Respect to the lady who has made such a difference to Luke* this year." Intensive Support Team, Cornwall |
Tutoring Approach: Sometimes when we are introduced to new concepts in schools or learning environments we are not always given the chance to express our thoughts or concerns about the concepts. The subject may move in a different direction leaving your floundering and wondering, this can be the switch off point. Switch Back ON! I will endeavour to build on the basics, give you a solid foundation and help you move forward in whichever direction you want to go by listening to you, assessing your level and working within your boundaries before stretching them. I have a teaching room within my house in Saltash where I carry out the lessons, I use computer based resources, books, games, cards and other numerous learning resources to suit the individual learner. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Jenny: I am an English lady who has lived and worked in many different countries. I have a love not just for languages but for learning about and experiencing different cultures and outlooks on life. For a hobby, I work on ancient Greek and Latin manuscripts, with people in France, Spain, and world-wide. |
Teaching Experience: I have a wide range of teaching experience over 30 years, in primary and secondary schools, in universities and adult education. I have worked on a one to one basis, in small groups and with larger classes. I have particular experience of helping students with dyslexia or other learning difficulties. Please note: Greek means 'ancient Greek' (classical or biblical). I can also teach Catalan, to GCSE. |
Tutoring Approach: My chief aim in tutoring is to give the students confidence in their abilities and to help them recognize their own strengths and weaknesses as well as the way they learn best. I like to make the lessons enjoyable and stimulating, adjusting the level of challenge to suit the student. The lessons do not have to be for an exam, they can also be a leisure activity. My philosophy is that everyone can learn a language, and that it can be fun! I work on a one to one basis and also with small groups if friends want to get together. Charges are reduced per student for group classes. |

View stavros's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About stavros: My main focus is Physics and Mathematics given that I have studied, taught and researched these disciplines at Leading Universities and Laboratories Worldwide. I have the qualifications and the ability to be a very effective tutor in these disciplines. |
Teaching Experience: During my graduate school period I had the chance to become familiar with the system of tutorials that some of the British universities offer. This much more personalized system provides the opportunity of outside of the classroom discussion and interaction which are a crucial part of the learning process, so I believe in being available to the students outside of lectures in some kind of such a system. Many students who are reserved in class, ask excellent questions in smaller settings and thus, learn much more. I greatly value the instruction and mentorship I received while in college and feel strongly about providing quality education to current and future students. |
Tutoring Approach: I think that it is crucial to provide students with a working knowledge of physical systems and to teach them problem solving skills for building upon this knowledge. Teaching a person to think analytically is at the core of what a student should take away from any science course. For students not majoring in physics, it is important to teach them how science affects their daily lives and how to make informed decisions about it based on information available. For physics majors it is crucial to teach them the knowledge pertinent to their course of study and how scientists solve difficult problems using approximation, computational, and other quantitative methods. These important tools are invaluable to future researchers because they aid in the careful design of experiments and in determining the predictions of a model or theory. I would also strive to cover a range of topics in my courses. This would enable me to teach an array of different methods for approaching physical problems and to demonstrate how similar approaches can be applied to problems from disparate fields. Furthermore, being a theoretician, I am well suited to teach physics majors how to construct theories and models, to derive predictions from these models, and to test these predictions against empirical data they have collected from the literature or obtained in the laboratory. Mentoring the research of undergraduate and graduate students is one of the most long-lasting contributions a researcher can make, and it is a process that I find fun and rewarding. From my experience, I learned the importance of engaging students through examples and of pitching material at a level that assumes intelligence but not necessarily knowledge, blending the known with the unknown in a combination that gives the student the feeling of possibility rather than that of impossibility that formal and impressive methods may impose. I would also enjoy teaching introductory physics courses. Although it is often challenging to teach introductory students, it is a challenge I thoroughly enjoy. Preparing lectures and solution sets forces me to communicate fundamental ideas in simple terms and to think deeply again about some of the most basic principles in physics |

| About Jayne: Hello and welcome. I graduated from Strathclyde University with a degree in English Literature in June 2008. I'm currently studying a one-year PGDE teacher training course in Glasgow, so have already started my journey to become a secondary school English teacher. I have a great passion for English and look forward to passing it on to those who don't - or at least improving your understanding of English for an exam! PLEASE NOTE: Proof of all qualifications, Enhanced Disclosure (criminal check) and proof of previous tutoring experience can be shown. |
Teaching Experience: 50% of my teacher training year involves actually teaching in local schools, a different one each term. I am currently placed at a school in Glasgow and am very familiar with the Scottish curriculum. I have tutored at Standard Grade and Higher level, and last year I was a volunteer literacy tutor for the local council where I tutored a 14-year-old boy with learning difficulties. |
Tutoring Approach: I'm a fun person, with a relaxed but no-nonsense approach to tutoring. My main focus is on helping you to understand the subject, which means that sessions will be organised. I have plenty of resources from teaching in school and I'm able to make up teaching materials specific to you if required. My aim is for the session to end with the pupil feeling the benefit of having tuition. |

View Yvonne's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Yvonne: I am a 33-year old double honours French and German language and literature graduate (93-97 from the University of East Anglia in Norwich) where I gained a 2:1 degree classification. I spent a year in Saarlouis, Germany (95-96) teaching English and French in a German grammar school. I speak and write both languages fluently and have a real love of languages and the learning and teaching of languages. I studied both French and German at A level (91-93) where I obtained A and B grades respectively. Since then I have worked in several large blue chip organisations at supply chain managerial level including Boots Healthcare International (in Nottingham), Procter and Gamble (in Weybridge, Surrey) and Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (in London). In all of these roles, I used both my German and French languages extensively. I am now a mother of a 8-month old girl. I have recently undertaken tutoring sessions for GCSE level French for pupils from both a secondary school and from blue-chip companies. I can supply personal and professional references for all of my work experience including tutoring sessions. |
Teaching Experience: As part of my degree course, I spent a year teaching English and French at a grammar school in the Saarlouis region of Germany during 95-96. Since then, I have continued my love of teaching and tutoring in all of my blue-chip roles where I have been a team manager for large supply chain departments. I have recently begun to tutor GCSE French to local students in the Chertsey and Weybridge area. All recommendations and references available. |
Tutoring Approach: I concentrate on building students' self-confidence through structured lessons. I believe that lesson planning is key to the success of a lesson and to responding to the needs of each individual student. Once I receive a new student I spend valuable time understanding areas they find difficult in a a language and looking at areas where grades can be improved significantly for success in exams. I am a very patient and caring tutor who listens, understands and builds the foundations for an excellent language progess for every student. During a lesson I will always concentrate on the core syllabus of the GCSE or A/S or A level work but will make the session fun, inspiring and challenging! I think praise is very important for a student and telling them how they are progressing. I will concentrate on a communicative approach but like to underline the importance of grammar in a language and will concentrate on this especially at AS and A level standard. Grammar is comprehensively covered in lessons and is a real strength of my teaching. As a native English speaker I can relate to and explain well the structure of a new language to students who may feel perplexed by and afraid of it. This also strengthens undoubtedly the knowledge of their own English structure and grammar. My referees point out that I have built up confidence in their children and that I am very patient and caring. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Danny: I'm a Maths graduate from Cambridge (previously a scholar at Westminster), currently working as a programmer developing science software for schools. I'm also an author of both technical books and fiction. I have two young children of my own, and have a keen interest in education and child development - on a personal level, I'm fascinated by how the mind works and how humans evolved. |
Teaching Experience: I'm an experienced tutor, with many successful former pupils, mostly at GCSE level, but also A-Level and beyond. I have a teaching qualification (in adult learning), although I do think teaching and tutoring are rather different. In my day job, I also work in the educational sector, so I have a lot of contact with schools and teachers and understand the educational climate. And as mentioned above, I have written a published textbook on Maths and Physics. |
Tutoring Approach: In my opinion, the role of a tutor is to support teaching rather than replace it. Mostly, I find that people coming to me are struggling because they are missing a key piece of understanding - my job is to find those gaps and help to fill them. A good tutor often doesn't even need to know the material the student is working on: sometimes just having someone to learn along with them and go through the work together is enough to make a difference. |

View Mark's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Mark: I am 33 years old and a Qualified Primary Teacher. I currently run my own business (SportStart) providing sports coaching for after-school clubs in primary schools across Surrey. I also provide PPA cover in schools during term-time, run school holiday sports academies and deliver exciting children's birthday parties! Although I am very keen on sport, my real passion is working with children, which led me to becoming a primary teacher. Whilst I have great fun teaching sport to children, I do miss the day-to-day teaching in the classroom environment, where life is never dull! |
Teaching Experience: I hold a Primary PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) which enables me to teach children in the 4-11 age range. I spent 2 years teaching at Brookwood Primary School in Brookwood, Surrey, with Year 5 and Year 6 children. I subsequently set up my sports coaching business however during that period I continued to teach, covering PPA time at Windlesham Village Infant School, Windlesham, Surrey, where I taught children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. I currently teach Year 2 children at the Mead Infant School in Ewell, Surrey, where I am employed to cover PPA time as a sports coach. |
Tutoring Approach: I take great pride and satisfaction from helping a child to achieve their full potential. Being able to develop a child's confidence, knowledge and skills is such a rewarding experience - this is what attracted me to teaching! I believe that I am friendly and relaxed but always professional in everything I do. I like to be innovative and find interesting and stimulating ways of helping children to learn and express themselves. With Maths tuition in particular I try to combine practical, often sports-related activities with the teaching of methods to engage a child's attention and focus them on a specific area of learning. I am also fairly flexible in the hours I can work and will go that extra bit further than your 'average' tutor! |
