| About Sophia: Currently writing up a PhD in Molecular Biology, possess a 2.1 honours degree in Genetics. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught small groups of medical students as well as one-to one teaching at pre- GCSE and GCSE level. I used to run a Saturday Performing Arts School in East London with 40 students and five teachers. I am keen to gain further experience in teaching. |
Tutoring Approach: The onus is on the student to gain the confidence in the subject they have problems with. I believe that once this confidence has been gained the student can be guided and problems can be solved using logical thinking. At higher levels (post-GCSE) I like to ask questions and explain the background to the problem so that the student may be able to provide answers to the queries for themselves. |

| About Laura: I am a 24 year old qualified secondary school teacher living near Old Street in North London. I am passionate about teaching and about giving young people the best start in life, and realise the importance of achieving well in school and in examinations for young people's future. I find it very rewarding to be able to help young people achieve their full potential and enjoy their studies through successful tutoring. My interests are current affairs and the arts. I enjoy reading, visiting galleries and sites of cultural heritage and live music. I develop positive, caring relationships with the young people I teach. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked in two outstanding London secondary schools, as both an English teacher and special educational needs class teacher. I have expertise and experience in working with students with ASD, ADHD, Downs syndrome and global learning delay. I have also successfully taken disaffected and lower achieving students through the AQA GCSE course with great success. I have had experience of working with gifted and talented students, and in supporting them in achieving A and A* grades. Working in London schools I have also taught and supported learning for students for whom English is a second language. Before beginning my teaching career in the UK I worked as a voluntary English language teacher in India, where I worked to help students improve their conversational English skills and pronunciation. |
Tutoring Approach: Tutoring can be an incredible helpful tool in aiding students to achieve their academic goals, however, it has to be done well to be successful. As a qualified teacher I am aware of the different ways in which students learn and the difficulties they may face. When tutoring, the work and support I provide will be tailored to the needs of the individual, and will support them in gaining independence in achieving their own goals. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About sheelagh: I am a middle aged lady who is good at encouraging unconfident learners because I am kind. I am very enthusiastic about the English language, culture and literature and I try to impart this enthusiasm to my students. I try to incorporate practical activities into my lessons if possible. For example, when I was teaching my students to use the imperative form for instructions, I made a trifle with them, kept it in the fridge overnight, asked them to decorate it the next day and then we shared it with another class. |
Teaching Experience: Mixed secondary school - one year teaching English to 11-16 year olds Comprehensive school - five years teaching Business Studies and Shorthand to 14-18 year olds. I taught Shorthhand at evening classes to adults for one year. I taught ESOL to asylum seekers, refugees and foreign students for five years. |
Tutoring Approach: Friendly and positive. I try to make it enjoyable and relevant and to choose topics that interest individual students whenever possible. I use games, puzzles, songs and authentic material which I adapt as well as the standard textbooks. I learn a lot from the students and I am constantly revising my ideas, methods and approach as a result of this. |

View Sarah's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Sarah: I am a recent graduate from the University of Nottingham, having studied Art History. I will be beginning my masters at UCL in September 2009. As a recent graduate, I have experience of the current educational system. This knowledge includes that of the structuring of contemporary exam papers and required approach to the answers as well as the university application process and general first-hand knowledge of the different institutions. I am friendly, patient and adaptable. |
Teaching Experience: I privately tutored a fellow student in History and Art History this year during the final year of their undergraduate degree. We both achieved 2.1's. I received a first in my final year. I have a wealth of child care experience, notably having cared for two children aged 9 and 11 every weekday evening after school for two years during my A Levels. This role included assisting with homework. |
Tutoring Approach: I am an analytical thinker with a methodical approach. Coursework essays; structuring, construction of argument, grammar, are my speciality. I find articulating information during teaching helps to clarify things in my own head, therefore encourage oral communication of ideas as a learning method. Explaining out loud what it is you want to write down helps to formulate a structure or argument. Patient and friendly one-on-one help allows the student to learn thoroughly at their own pace. |

View Jo's Profile
Types of Tutoring: From their home / Online
| About Jo: I believe that learning a language can enrich your life and should be done in a fun and interesting way. My parents encouraged me to travel from a young age and I suppose I developed an 'ear' for languages through being made to ask for ice-creams and make friends with local kids! I also learned French and German at school and then went on an intensive course in Florence to learn Italian - then went on to study both German and Italian at the University of Reading. I live in Chelmsford with my husband. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience teaching German and Italian up to A level standard in comprehensive schools and as a private tutor. I have also used German working in the private sector as a media analyst. |
Tutoring Approach: My current job is 'specialist teacher for children with physical and neurological impairments', a job I love but I am missing my languages! Being able to tutor someone else would therefore also be an enjoyable experience for me. I hope that all my experiences in life and as a teacher have made me a patient and empathetic person who can work with a range of different people from any background and of any age. I can be guided by what a client is hoping to achieve but would hope to employ a range of styles, keeping a balance between the formal and informal. My favourite analogy is that learning a langauge is like building a house - the desire to learn is the foundation, the words are the bricks and the grammar is the cement that holds them all together in the right place! I have a current CRB certificate. |

| About Wendy: Hi, I'm Wendy and am 25 years old. I work at a school in Northumberland teaching a year 3 class. After qualifying from University I worked as a supply teacher for one year working with children aged from 3 - 11. I love teaching and am a patient and approachable teacher. I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as can remember and I like to make learning fun!! |
Teaching Experience: Completed many teaching practices while at university. Worked as a supply teacher for one year. Have now been working at my current school for 3 years. |
Tutoring Approach: I help children to gain confidence in their own ability, encouraging them all the time. It is important that children find learning fun. I work closely with parents/guardians making sure that they are aware what has been learnt after each session. I know that each child learns in a different way so I plan sessions that will be suitable for the individual. |

| About Eleanor: I am 26 years old and am looking to start tutoring again after a break. I am applying for my PGDE and would welcome the opportunity to reacquaint myself with tutoring. I am familiar with the Standard Grade and Higher syllabus for Biology and Maths and find tutoring both interesting and rewarding. I am patient and enjoy working with young people as well as being enthusiastic about learning. |
Teaching Experience: I have extensive experience in tutoring Biology (Standard Grade/Higher/University) and Maths (Standard Grade), both on a one-to-one basis and to large groups. Throughout my university career I tutored school pupils in the evenings and in my Senior Honours year I helped out in Biology practical classes. In addition to this I have been involved in training adults in literacy and numeracy through my work for a local charity. |
Tutoring Approach: My tutoring centres very much upon the tutees needs. I tend to help the tutee focus on any areas (s)he is having difficulty with, and if required, revising stronger areas. In the past I have helped tutees catch up on work after being out of school due to illness, and help struggling students improve their grades vastly. I am an excellent motivator and have a good understanding of the barriers which may prevent pupils learning in school. |

| About James: Having completed a Masters Degree in Aerospace Engineering at Southampton University I have detailed knowledge of Maths and Physics, which having only recently completed the education cycle can apply and teach competently within the sphere of A levels and GCSE's and beyond. I am currently living in Southampton to to pursue a career in Aerospace, but willing to spend time teaching young and old the beauty of science. |
Teaching Experience: Having only just completed a 4 year degree I have limited professional teaching experience but from school upwards I have been a tutor/teacher in many disciplines from lecturing young RAF cadets in varieties of skills outside of the academic range to helping younger relatives and friends pass GCSE's, A-Levels and entrance exams. |
Tutoring Approach: Slowing down - most people I have helped need little encouragement to learn once the time is taken to explain all the details that get glazed over in classroom situations. Patience and common sense are the two most important things for potential exam candidates and I try to teach them the methods and foibles of the examination processes to relieve that pre-exam stress (which I regard as the only reason for ANY person not to fulfil their potential in the sciences) |

| About Rossanne: I'm currently a student of philosophy at the university of bristol (in my last year). I perform music professionally on a regular basis. |
Teaching Experience: I've taught primary school children before in swindon (two at a time). I am also about to start teaching at a primary school in Bristol - hopefully starting in January or as soon as my CRB check is completed. Teaching experience isn't all that is needed, you also need to have had experience of being taught by lots of different types of teachers, and I've been playing all of my life and so have had this in abundance! I can remember my reactions to different styles of teaching, and I think that's important in order to judge a pupils reactions to the way that you teach. I think you need to adapt to each pupil. |
Tutoring Approach: I don't think teaching music is all about how to play the right notes in the right order. You need to get the feel right too or else you might as well let a computer play it for you. Music is not an intellectual excercise. Also I'm not interested in teaching someone who doesn't want to learn the instrument and only do it out of parental pressure. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Roman: I am a full time student at Heriot-Watt University, currently in my second year of an MPhys course. I'm always up for a challenge, and strive to reach goals. I am fairly young, in the sense that I am an undergraduate (but that only means I have a fresher knowledge of the A-level/GSCE syllabi!). I have a reputation of being very clear-minded. |
Teaching Experience: I have no qualifications as such, but have privately taught GCSE Chemistry and Physics on several occasions. And all my tutees came out with A* in those 2 subjects! I am occasionally called upon by my friend to help with A-level chemistry, since alot of it is needed in the Biochemistry sections of his Biology course at University. |
Tutoring Approach: Simplicity! Visualizing a question is very important, so diagrams and pictures always help. The way to tackle any exam is to sit down with the syllabus statement, pick out the difficult sections/things yet to learn, and compose a set of illustrated notes. Meanwhile, look over past papers to get to grips with the way problems are presented and answered. As basic and laborious as they are, flash cards work wonders. |

| About Sarah: I'm a graduate who has spent three years living in France studying French language and culture. I am enthusiastic about my subject and enjoy passing on what I have learnt to other people. I'm easy to get on with and am an approachable person. |
Teaching Experience: I tutored French children whilst living in France, and worked for half a year in a French school working with young children. |
Tutoring Approach: I try to make the subject interesting for the student, not intimidating - by using music or conversation for example. I realise that speaking in a foreign language can be embarrassing for students, so I try to make them less self conscious. Although grammar is important, French is a living and evolving subject, something which makes it constantly intersting, and I think its important to reflect this in lessons. |
