About Douglas:
I am a recently retired teacher with over 30 years of teaching experience. I have tutored privately for the past 20 years or so, primarily teaching maths at SATS and GCSE levels and chemistry at GCSE and Advanced Level. At any given time I normally have between 4 - 8 students of ages between 10 and 18 years. I am occasionally asked to take on adult students. I like to think that I get on well with my tutees, many of whom come on the recommendation of the parents of those I have previously taught. I strongly believe that one-to-one tuition is the most efficient and effective means of teaching, particularly for those who are less confident.

Teaching Experience:

I taught at an independent school in the West Country for over 30 years where I was at different stages a Housemaster, the Head Of Chemistry and Senior Master. I have been an examiner with the Edexcel Examination Board for the past 15 years. I still work for them as a principal examiner in A-Level Chemistry which involves the setting of examination papers as well as the management of a team of assistant examiners.

Tutoring Approach:

Students should be prepared to be be fully involved in the tutoring process and must want to succeed. I believe that in general I soon gain the confidence of my tutees, as it is important to develop a good working relationship with them as soon as possible. In many cases I find that I am coaching those who have lacked the confidence to progress properly in the large classes at school, or for some reason or another have fallen behind academically, perhaps through illness or from returning to the UK from abroad. Having experience of teaching both in a school and in a tutoring context, I know that much better progress can be made when the needs of the individual can be rapidly assessed and dealt with.

About Lynne:
I have always loved French since I first started to learn the language in secondary school. I spent one term of my lower sixth at a French school in Poitiers and then the third year of my degree course as an "assistante" in a school in Normandy. Frequent holidays in France and satellite television access to all French channels at home allow me to maintain a high level of proficiency and fluency. Now that I have "retired" from full-time teaching, I would like to use my experience to help others develop their language skills on a one-to-one basis.

Teaching Experience:

I have seventeen years experience of teaching French - eight years in a comprehensive secondary school in Hertfordshire and more recently nine years as Head of Department in an independent school in Suffolk. I have taught at all levels from primary to A level and particularly enjoy the challenge of examination classes.

Tutoring Approach:

As a tutor I expect high standards both of myself and my students. I encourage an atmosphere of commitment and enjoyment. My classes will always be focused towards the need of each individual student in order to enable optimum progress. In my opinion, learning is based on thorough understanding and I am very careful to ensure that students fully understand before moving on to the next level or topic. I believe that my revision methods encourage students to feel more confident as they approach their examinations.

About lawren:
I am currently a high performing second year A level student which has given me a thurst for teaching and the ability to relate to current issues. I attended King Henry viii school in Coventry and gained 10 gcses all grade A or A* in the subjects i am willing to teach. The school regularly achieves high results and inevitably a good status in the results table. I come from a family of four children of all ages and therefore feel very comfortable with people both older and younger than myself and will work to the motto that if you dont learn the way i teach then i will teach the way you learn.

Teaching Experience:

I have mentored my eldest brother through his Gcses for him to gain 10 gcses all grade C and above.

I am currently working with children in their attempt at the 11 + entrance exam to two of the most presitious schools in Coventry.

Tutoring Approach:

I understand that everybody learns in a different way and through going through the process of a high achieving school have learnt how to approach a range of learning styles. From visual or active to repeated and musical. as i have mentioned before i am driven to succeed and would like to give people my passion for achieving.

About Vishal:
I am a 25 year old male teacher educated in the UK

Teaching Experience:

I am currently in my third year of teaching and am a full-time Teacher of Physics at one of the top selective schools in the country (rated as having the best Physics department in the country in 2005). I have experience teaching the full range of abilities and a proven track record within this range.

Tutoring Approach:

I teach with a very visual and hands-on style. I am very clear, friendly and approachable and if a concept is not understood then I consider myself to be at fault!

A major concern parents have when sending their child to a tutor is the safety of their child, naturally as an employed teacher checks in the form of a CRB have already been made. In addition to this security guarantee I will be making available online web-cam services if you wish to 'check-up' on your child at anytime during the lesson.

About Emily:
I am a young, enthusiastic Scientist and have a huge interest in the world around us, especially in the natural world and astronomy. I am a qualified Secondary Science teacher with a specialism in Biology, but have also taught primary Science for the past 3 years. I love to take Science to it's most simple form so that seemingly difficult ideas such as molecules, electricity and forces become clear.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for the last 3 years since finishing university in a strongly academic school. I have enjoyed helping children with special educational needs as well as pushing those who need extending. I have coordinated primary Science and fully prepared and given confidence to year 6 pupils for their Science SATs exams. I have taught all three Sciences up to GCSE level and have taught Biology up to GSCE and A level. I have access to many teaching resources including past papers and practise questions.

Tutoring Approach:

Science is often seen as difficult to understand and unimaginative, however I make great efforts to make it manageable, interesting and clear. I take pride in developing effective exam technique in pupils, by first checking for gaps and weaknesses in their understanding, then covering those areas in fun, interactive ways and finally checking and reiterating their learning by going through exam style questions. Highlighting common misconceptions and using memory aids, computer animations and games are methods I employ to aid learning. In this way knowledge can be stored ready to be applied fully and correctly.

About Benjamin:
I am French so I can speak and write french fluently...

Teaching Experience:

I worked with an organisation called "les compagnons des jours heureux" and I had to teach pupils how to look after children, laws and the technical skills needed for summer camps...

Tutoring Approach:

I think you can't provide the same one for children and for adults. I would teach french with games for children and attractive subjects for teenagers. For adults, I would just ask why they want to learn french (job, holidays...).

I spent 7 months in the South of France with The British Council teaching English to primary school children. This experience enabled me to create and implement new and effective teaching methods. I really enjoyed working with children but I would also love to have the chance to work with students of all ages.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe it is important to have a good tutor-student relationship and I therefore like to create a calm atmosphere where the student feels at ease. About Colin:
I am an experienced and qualified tutor - I have a mathematics PhD and have been tutoring at all levels (from GCSE through to undergraduate) for over a decade. I believe any student can become strong in maths with good tuition and a little work.

"I am planning on recommending Colin's tutoring to any of my friends who need help. He was patient and made the material easier to understand despite the fact that I hadn't taken math in years. I got a great grade too!"
- MC, Utah

Teaching Experience:

* Started tutoring GCSE maths while doing A-levels
* Tutored through university career
* Have always been complimented on my ability to make difficult ideas simple without patronising

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to encourage students to look at problems methodically and to help understand the ideas behind the theory by using simple, real-world examples. I teach that it's not just getting the right answer that is important, but understanding how you got there and knowing that the answer is right.
