Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Lisa: I graduated from Bath University in 2005 and have a BA in Modern Languages and European Studies (German and ab initio Russian). I have excellent GCSE qualifications and have spent 1 academic year teaching English in Moscow. I am friendly and approachable. |
Teaching Experience: October 2006 - June 2007: I worked for Language Link Russia, in a school outside Moscow. Here I taught English as a Foreign Language. I taught various ages from 11 - 55+ and levels, from beginners' to Intermediate, though am capable of teaching more advanced English. |
Tutoring Approach: I fins that the most important thing to do first is to assess the individual's level, needs and learning style. Everyone learns differently and so it is important to find what works for the individual, something that 1 on 1 tutoring caters for well. My approach is very much based on the communicative approach which encourages as much active participation as possible with a focus on communication. Additionally, however, I do like grammar and so would be willing to focus a lot on that if so wished. |

| About Alison: I am 24 and currently work in a local art gallery. I studied History at Royal Holloway, University of London and Sydney University, Australia and then went on to take a Masters in Art History at Bristol University. I am a friendly and outgoing person with a real passion and interest for History, Art History and English. |
Teaching Experience: I have 8 years of experience helping to tutor both my peers and younger students on a one to one basis at University, A-Level and GCSE level as well as some primary students. This includes teaching factual information, assisting with research, instructing how to write essays and explaining how to structure successful exam answers. I have tutored pupils on a short term basis helping revision before exams as well as on longer terms, seeing pupils through a full course. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that each person has a different approach to learning as well as different paces at which they learn. I have had much success in tutoring by trying different teaching styles until i find a suitable one for each individual. Learning doesn't have to be boring and a one to one teaching session is often more enjoyable for the pupil than a large class at school. I also believe that structuring essays and knowing how to answer exam questions are critical to success and are a crucial skill to learn. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About jennifer: I am a 23 year journalist with a first degree in English Literature offering tutoring services. English Literature has always been one of my passions. At GCSE I achieved A*, followed by a grade A at A Level and a 2.1 in English and Related Literature at York University. I am a friendly, easy going yet organised and clear thinking individual who enjoys interacting with young people and helping them develop to their full potential. |
Teaching Experience: Over the past year I have been involved in several volunteering projects in local schools in Rotherham, using my English Literature and Journalism skills to help deprived children. This has involved helping children write creative pieces, source stories for school magazines and learn how to use new technology recently introduced into the school. I have a passion for education and enjoy interacting with pupils. My communication skills are highly developed and I have an easy going yet focussed teaching style. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is always to find a way that pupils can relate to the text. With this technique, it is key to identify which examining board the candidate is using and structure all teaching around the specific assessment objectives of their mark scheme. Structured tutorials are planned each week, whereby specific topics and themes are targeted. Revision techniques, such as mind maps, practice essays and exam skills are all part of the programme. If candidates feel they have any specific weaknesses, such as essay structuring or grammatical flaws, these can all be targeted to suit the pupil. |

| About Lisa: I currently teach KS3, GCSE and A-level Geography at St Philomena's School in Carshalton. I successfully completed my PGCE with Goldsmiths University last year. I have studied Geography at GCSE, A-Level and at Nottingham University, where I achieved a 2:1. I have a great deal of enthusiasm for Geography and feel that I can instill this in others. Moreover, I believe that by inspiring pupils, this will motivate them to achieve their potential. |
Teaching Experience: Before teaching at St Philomena's I had placements in Riddlesdown High School and Elliot School, where I was able to teach Geography to pupils aged between 11-18. Prior to this, I have also worked in activity camps, where I carried out sports and arts and crafts activities with children aged 5-11. I feel that my wide variety of teaching experiences enables me to find ways to interact with children from a diverse range of backgrounds and with very different learning styles. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that learning should be enjoyable. Where possible, I use a variety of teaching methods to cater for all learning styles, enthuse and enable pupils to work to their full potential. Pupils should gain confidence and fully understand the aims and objectives of their work, as well as how to apply it. At GCSE in particular, I think it is important to find ways of condensing information, in order to make revision more manageable. |

View Christopher's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Christopher: I am a married father of two young children and hold a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Birmingham (specialising in Molecular Microbiology). For the past three years I have worked as a post-doctoral research scientist at Warwick HRI (University of Warwick). I am enthusiastic about science and have always enjoyed explaining scientific ideas to others, whatever their level of understanding. |
Teaching Experience: During my scientific career I have been responsible for small groups of work experience students, demonstrating experiments as well as teaching the theory behind the practice. I have successfully taught various techniques to fellow scientists - students as well as more senior researchers. I have also given talks at scientific conferences, explaining concepts to people with varying levels of understanding of the subject. I have recently tutored several A-level Biology students, and all my feedback has been positive, for example: 'My daughter found Chris to be very helpful and easy to talk to with regard to the aspects of the work that she was having difficulty with. He explained things well and took time to make sure that she understood. He always sent her homework between sessions and made sure that they were marked and discussed. Overall, I have been very impressed with him.' |
Tutoring Approach: I understand that each student has individual needs. I first identify the subject areas they are finding the most difficult. We then work together following the syllabus and I explain ideas to the student in different ways, using examples and visual aids. It is very important to use practice questions to both check their understanding and also build confidence in their own ability. This also helps to develop their exam technique. |

View Rowan's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Rowan: I am 25 years old and I am currently studying to complete my PGDE (PostGraduate Diploma of Education) at Strathclyde University (Jordanhill). I have a degree in English Literature and Film & TV studies at M.A (hons) level from Glasgow University - I graduated in 2005. I then moved to China where I taught English as a foreign language for 18 months. After my return I worked in finance for 1 year, and then decided to return to secondary teaching on a full-time basis. My CV is very varied and I consider myself to be an enthusiastic, experienced and professional tutor. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching in some capacity since 2003. In 2003 I was a voluntary student tutor at a local Glasgow primary school, a placement arranged by my University. In 2004 I was employed by Glasgow University as a peer mentor as part of the Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) programme, assisting younger students with coursework and building a sense of community to the department I was part of. In 2005, after my graduation, I lived in China for 18 months as a teacher of English as a foreign language to students aged 16 - 25. I was responsible for the creation of the curriculum I taught, as well as the appropriate assessment. |
Tutoring Approach: I enjoy teaching and have been teaching in some capacity since 2003. My manner is considered to be welcoming, friendly, patient and professional. I am interested in the theories of education as well as the practice of it and have experience of working with a variety of age ranges and group sizes. In addition to this, I am experienced in teaching both English language and English literature and consider myself able to approach both. I was popular with my students and I enjoyed using innovative methods in both teaching and assessment; in my EFL teaching, I witnessed a visible improvement in my students. Although I prefer one-on-one learning, I am also very computer literate and am happy to enter into a degree of online tutoring. I am also happy to check and proofread coursework and help with specific exam preparation. I was also successful when employed by Glasgow University as a mentor; the students I assisted were able to achieve higher coursework marks than previously. Overall, I would say my approach to teaching and learning places an emphasis on the learner, rather than the results. I always tried to achieve a greater understanding of the subject and the material rather than better exam results (which should, I believe, be a happy side-effect of a deep understanding of the material), and this worked well with the students, who enjoyed this approach and the freedom to explore the topic it gave them. |
