View Peter's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Peter: I'm a university postgraduate composer and performer and have returned to Ipswich having completed a BA and MA at the University of Leeds. I tutor violin (beginner - grade 5) and guitar (beginner +) performance as well as music theory and composition (any level). I have a wide range of musical experience and understand the technical requirements of most orchestral instruments having specialised in contemporary (avant-garde) composition. Aside from my academic qualifications I am a grade 8 violinist and completed my grade 5 theory (with distinction). I also play Guitar, Bass and Sitar and dabble in music recording and production and am a songwriter in my free time. Thus I can offer insight into most major musical branches. |
Teaching Experience: Throughout my undergraduate and postgraduate courses I taught students privately focusing on music theory, violin and guitar tuition. I currently run a guitar club at an Ipswich High School teaching entry level guitar to students aged 12-16. Prior to my degree courses I taught guitar and violin privately on a smaller scale to gather teaching experience teaching students aged between 10 - 52. I have also supported younger students on University Music courses in composition techniques and theory and can additionally provide contemporary aesthetic grounding and reasoning behind composition styles. My CRB check was initialised by this institution. |
Tutoring Approach: Every student has their own requirements and personal goals. I aim to help them achieve those goals utilizing the wide array of musical experience I have assimilated over the last thirteen years as a musician, student and composer. I emphasise the importance of performance technique, the right attitude for private practice and can teach music theory at any level ranging from basics to post graduate techniques including the obligatory grade 5 theory every associated board performer eventually faces! |

View Laura's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Laura: Hello. My name is Laura Tracanna. I am 25 years old. I was born in Italy and moved with my family to the UK at the age of 4. I am trilingual. I speak Italian and English to the same level and I am also fluent in French as I did a BA in Modern Foreign Languages at Westminster University. I qualified from the University of Westminster in 2005 and then did a little travelling and then returned to university in London to continue my studies. I studied for my pgce primary school qualification with French specialism. I am now a qualified primary school teacher and although I trained primarily to teach Key Stage 2, I have been teaching a class of 30 reception children and have loved it. I really enjoy working within the foundation stage. What I do miss however, is using my languages in my everyday work hence my interest in tutoring. I also had to acquire a different language at a young age and although I was very young and acquisition was fairly subconscious, I understand the difficulties encountered in learning and I am very good at encouraging different approaches which help overcome these difficulties. I am young and have been told that as a teacher, I am extremely kind and patient. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked as a nanny and tutor for various families in London while I was a student. I tutored the children of foreign families. I taught French and Italian as well as helping them with their homework. I completed a PGCE primary qualification at Greenwich University and have just completed my first year of teaching which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I taught a Reception class of 30 children. I was responsible for the planning and delivery of all curriculum subjects. I was also responsible for planning for children with special needs and developing my own assessment strategies. I led my class towards achieving all the Early Learning Goals. |
Tutoring Approach: I truly believe in making learning fun where possible but I understand that some things just need to be learnt and however they are approached, can prove quite tricky for some students. I believe in positive reinforcement and getting to know the student as much as possible. I believe that recognising the areas of difficulty and of interest of each student is essential when delivering lessons. In terms of tutoring, I try to focus initially on areas of interest or required areas of study of my student. I like to get feedback on my own lessons and ask if how a student's learning could be maximised in any way. I try to vary my lessons so they are not monotonous and always delivered from a textbook or a notebook. I make my own resources at times and try to base lessons in deifferent locations. I believe in being honest. the tutee needs to feel comfortable to tell me what works for them and vice versa. |

| About Jade: I am an undergraduate student at the University of Oxford in my second year of a degree in English Language and Literature. During university holidays I am at home in the Portsmouth area and so I am looking to gain some tutoring experience. I am patient and understanding, and I am passionate about the subjects which I wish to teach. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience of working voluntarily as a classroom assistant in a local primary school. I also gave tuition to my sisters and their friends during their GCSEs and continue to help my younger siblings with their studies. |
Tutoring Approach: I want the pupils to really enjoy what they are learning, as I have always felt that enjoying what you study greatly increases your achievement. I think it is important to tailor each session to the pupil's individual personality and needs; I hope to find something in the topic which the pupil can really engage with. After many years of taking exams I feel that I have gained a number of useful exam techniques and approaches to study which I would like to share. |

| About Charlotte: I am a creative and caring individual currently studying for a masters degree in Dramatherapy. I have worked as a writer on a national publication and am currently juggling acting jobs alongside my studies. I am an avid reader with particular skill for critically reviewing, creative writing and spelling and grammar. I have vast drama and theatre experience, both on and off stage/screen. I have many years experience of working with children of all ages. |
Teaching Experience: Whilst still at school myself I taught the year 7&8 drama group, more recently I have worked as a drama teacher and play writing tutor to teenagers participating in a summer camp at California State University, Northridge in LA. Also in L.A. I taught drama and theatre to disadvantaged teenagers with a company called City At Peace Los Angeles. I have vast experience of teaching reading to early years and primary aged children. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a warm and friendly approach following the ethos of positive reinforcement. Rather than focus on negative components (e.g. homework not done, spellings not looked at) I seek to reinforce the positive in each individual I work with, whether this be a vast improvement in their work, an insightful observation or simply turning up to the session. I am firm but not harsh and ultimately very approachable. I will set up boundaries and aim to have fun in the tutoring sessions to boost capacity to learn. I can use dramatic techniques to boost self-confidence, explore character and enhance learning. |

View Indrek's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Indrek: My name is Indrek Sepp, I am a 21 year old second year student of physics at the University of Durham. I am friendly, approachable and passionate about science and mathematics. I very much enjoy teaching these people in general because I like to show just how fascinating and elegant they can be. As a sidenote: I can provide confirmation about my CRB check |
Teaching Experience: I achieved three A-Levels at A grade in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry in 2005. I have an intimate understanding of these subjects and being an active student myself I have a methodology to revision and exam preperation which is flexible and applicable to those of all abilities. I have been helping my friends and my siblings to study for their exams which involve Science and Mathematics from my A-levels right up to now with in University. I do this simply because I enjoy tuition for its own sake. I have helped a wide range of people with a wide range of abilities to achieve an understanding of how mathematics and science work. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach is to simply work through past exam papers in order to give the tutee a familiarity with the type of questions asked, and to gauge their relative strengths and weaknesses. I shall impart my experience and understanding to solidify the former while minimising the latter. The A-level syllabi have not changed fundamentally since my A-levels, neither has the format of the questions, how they are marked and the technique with which to approach them. You will find my tutoring to be straightforward and concise. I think that the sciences and mathematics are generally not taught very well at school. I believe that excelling in them lies not in learning dozens of formulae but with understanding the simple principles upon which they are built. Not only is this approach more interesting and intellectually rewarding, it also allows you to approach any questions asked in exams with confidence and ease. I am absolutely confident in my ability to prepare prospective tutees to achieve not only their maximal marks in the subjects of Maths, Chemistry and Physics; but also to instil a deeper, more unified understanding and appreciation of them. |

View Vicki's Profile
Types of Tutoring: From their home
| About Vicki: I am a twenty year old Warwick University student, about to go into my final year of a degree in English and Comparative Literature. I intend to become a teacher after graduating, and have already been offered a graduate teaching scheme placement after I have finished my degree at a Coventry Secondary School. I am friendly, helpful, considerate and encouraging, and have much experience of working with children of all ages, particularly those with Special Educational Needs. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught in schools in Coventry, Marbella, Spain and Matlock, Derbyshire. I have completed the Student Associate Scheme through Warwick University, whereby I passed a teaching assessment process which meant that I could take part of my teacher training early and also go into a local Coventry Secondary School one day a week to teach lessons, work in the Special Needs department and to work as a teaching assistant in other lessons. This role taught me a lot about teaching, and in particular about effective lesson delivery to large groups, these skills can obviously be adapted to bring about effective learning on a one-to-one basis. In the last academic year I also worked one day a week in another Coventry Secondary School in the Special Needs department, working on a one-to-one basis with students who had difficulties such as ADHD, Asperger's syndrome, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, and also those with Behavioural problems. I worked with these students to improve their core English and Mathematics skills, as they were working towards a qualification that demonstrated their key knowledge of both. This role was the same as will be required for tutoring, the one-to-one encouragement and development of a student being key. I have worked in the Aloha College in Marbella, Spain, developing English as a Foreign Language skills with students that were 13 years old, and also helping in some GCSE equivalent classes. The main thing that this role taught me were the skills needed to effectively teach EFL and bring about effective and lasting understanding of English to non-native speakers. When I was doing my A' levels in Matlock, Derbyshire, I worked in the Special Needs department of my school for two lessons a week, mainly on a one-to-one basis, but also on a whole class level. In this role I focused on developing the communicational and language skills of the students, but also helped with many subjects. I also specialised in working with students that had ADHD, and developed effective learning programmes for them. |
Tutoring Approach: I would approach tutoring as a very pupil-centred experience, as the student is likely to have specific areas that they want help with developing and understanding as a starting point. This would be the first area that I addressed. The next stage would be to link this area that needed extra help to the wider context of the subject as a whole, to ensure full understanding of the subject and to help with any further problems that may occur. Homework would be an aspect of my tutoring, however, I would not want it to get in the way of homework that is set by the school, so if the student had a large amount of coursework and/or homework that the school had set, I would accept that it would not always be possible to do the work that I had set as well. I would also offer help and guidance on any homework with which the student was stuck, and use this as a starting point for further discussion and development of the student's knowledge and understanding of the subject, as the issues that are raised in homework are often those that are the most difficult to recognise at school, as the student often does not get the opportunity to discuss with the teacher what they found difficult about the homework, they are often just told what they did is wrong, which does not give the student any scope for being able to work through their difficulties and fully understand the subject. I also do a lot of work with students with special educational needs, and would be more than willing to continue this, if only a level that would teach the student coping techniques and strategies to use in the school environment in order to help them get on better at school. |

| About Leo: Hi, I'm currently an undergraduate student at the University of Leeds studying BA Economics + Philosophy who would like to tutor part time in subjects that I have studied in the past and have knowledge in. I would in Leeds locally and you can contact me at leo(dash)e(dash)j(at)hotmail(dot)co(dot)uk. |
Teaching Experience: this would be my first time tutoring, however I am a bright student who did well in school and in exams and I've been through the whole system so I understand from a students perspective of what is needed. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe simple and clear explanations that follow logically are the best way for a student to understand and remember. Also I will be as patiently and friendly as possible because a student need to be motivated and feel relaxed while they're learning to be at their best. Lastly I also believe face to face contact is the best way to teach and learn, therefore I will not tutor online. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Jonathan: I'm currently a mathematics teaching in a Welsh-medium school, following the WJEC syllabi and find the time spent in a 1-2-1 situation the most rewarding and beneficial to the child. I'm outgoing and normally gets along with the majority of people, and I accept people for what they are. |
Teaching Experience: I completed my Post-Graduate Certificate in Education in 2007 and have been teaching and tutoring continuously since then, with classes ranging from year 7 to 11, as well as A-level classes, and those classes have been of all abilities, with SEN needs having to be considered at times also. |
Tutoring Approach: The child should lead the tutoring in my opinion. The tutor's role is one of support, explaining work that the child finds difficult and teaching other methods to complement those taught at the child's school. The child should be the one deciding what he or she wants to revise in the tutoring session, whether a recent homework or test, or more generally recent classwork. If necessary I am more than willing to increase the amount of tutoring nearer exams or during school holidays. |
