View Jennifer's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Jennifer: I have a background in Biology, having completed a degree at Manchester University in Biomedical Sciences achieving a high 2.1. Since graduating I have worked in research and published papers in both Nature Medicine and Neuron. I currently work in the Marketing department of a small and friendly scientific publisher. I have a passion and a understanding of Biology, and also the ability to teach it (I'm in marketing because I love to communicate about science). |
Teaching Experience: Although I have not yet tutored pupils on a one to one basis, many of my friends are teachers and I have recently helped organise many science activity days for their classes (primary and secondary schools). I loved doing this and I believe I helped the pupils understand science topics a little better. I have also used to work in a Nursery school as an assistant (part time) before I went to university and have a good ability with children. |
Tutoring Approach: I would have a organised and dedicated approach to tutoring - using the first session to highlight what your child needs to learn and understand in order to progress in his/her schooling. I would try to make lessons as interesting and inspiring for your children as possible and would be firm on homework if needed. |

View Michael's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Michael: I offer tuition in Maths, Physics and Chemistry at all levels up to A-level or IB, also Biology up to GCSE. I work full time as a private tutor; this means I am able to ensure I keep up to date with the frequent changes in the syllabus and the requirements of the different exam boards. I normally offer tuition in the student's home and the fees include reasonable travel. I have a degree and a doctorate in Materials Science, both from Oxford University. |
Teaching Experience: I have been working as a private tutor for nine years. I was previously a university lecturer in Materials Engineering. I have also taught Maths at Bexley College, and recently taught a series of GCSE Maths booster classes at a local secondary school, which were very well received. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe it is most important to encourage students and boost their confidence in the subjects being studied. Parents often comment on how much more confident the students feel after a series of lessons. I focus on the material required to pass the exams and I have many past papers for all examination boards, which I use to help the students to gain experience in answering exam questions. The students enjoy my style of tutoring and I receive many personal recommendations. |

View Ben's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Ben: I'm a friendly, relaxed and very approachable private tutor. I'm a student myself once again currently training to be a doctor at the University of Warwick (In year 2 of 4) - Aiming to become a GP. I love teaching and plan to be involved in teaching in the future once qualified as a doctor (most likely in University Medical Schools). Previous students I have tutored have said that they enjoyed the sessions, found them very helpful and well planned. Most students I have tutored in the past achieved grades higher than they were expecting. I have a 1st Class honors degree from the University of Birmingham, with my first year being at the University of Adelaide in Australia, have achieved numerous academic prizes (listed below) and have quite a lot of experience as a private tutor and in other teaching environments (See below). |
Teaching Experience: 2 years private tutoring of Chemistry students (A-level and University of Adelaide 1st year Chemistry and Maths students), Maths (International Bac., A-level, 1st year univsersity level and primary school students). 14 months as a teaching assistant at the Old Hall School, Wellington, Shropshire. (Lessons for years 3-8 often unsupervised in Maths, Science, French, German, PE/swimming). Also helped school boarders with their homework in these subjects. 2 years as a swimming instructor in Australia for 4 to 15 year olds. |
Tutoring Approach: In the first session, I would give an extra hour free of charge. This would enable you to see whether my tutoring style would suit you and also to determine what goals you would be working towards (ie specific A-level/GCSE grades, passing entrance and or other exams) in addition to identifying what level you are currently at and planning how you wish future sessions to run. I tend to run sessions quite flexibly (and can adapt for individual needs) in that we can cover whatever material you wish (ie areas you find problematic, current course work etc). We can also work together in a more structured format if you wish (ie systematically working through the syllabus or through work/exercises/exam-style questions I would prepare myself beforehand). I would also provide you with my university email address so you can email me with questions between sessions which I will try to answer as soon as possible. |

View Ebru's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Ebru: I am currently completing my PhD in the Deaprtment of Sociology at Lancaster University. I did my BA in economics and pursued my post-graduate study on discourses on state development around "East" and "West" imaginaries. I am interested in private and group tutoring in the following areas: teaching Turkish as a foreign language, sociology, history (in particular, empires, imperialism, modern European history, enlightenment, etc.) , politics (in particular, Middle Eastern politics, state theory, theories of discourse and subjectivity, political theory). I also hold a certificate of teaching and learning in higher education, obtained from Lancaster University, the Department of Education in 2006. |
Teaching Experience: I have been working as a teaching assistant (with temporary contracts )at Lancaster University since 2005. I taught the following courses: Introduction to Sociology (in the Department of Sociology), Empire and Imperialism, The Creation and Destruction of Modern Europe, Enlightenment (Department of History). I also taught Turkish as a foreign language to the children of ex-path employees working in Istanbul, Turkey. |
Tutoring Approach: I would describe my teaching style as systematic and the teaching agenda as up to date. I prepare outlines for each class and ask the student to retrospectively read through the notes as we proceed. The interactive nature of teaching enables the student to actively engage in the thinking process and encourage them to learn the philosophy of the subject, rather than memorising the information delivered. As we go along, depending on the subject, the student is asked to relate the contemporary material (newspaper articles, books, etc.) to the topic covered in the classroom. This could be (for example, reading and commenting on the news in a Turkish newspaper, or relating contemporary debates on the global financial crisis to debates on Marx in a politics class). For the student, the most important thing to do is to follow the tutor's instructions and repeat what is discussed in each class. |

View John's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About John: I am an electrical engineering consultant with a degree in electronics and electrical engineering from The University of Edinburgh. I have previously worked as an electronics design engineer for satellite communications systems and as a college tutor in Wallace College, Edinburgh. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored many students during the past five years, both privately and in classes at Wallace College. I have also worked as an instructor at Acrobounce Scotland, which is a high energy outdoor activity for children and I develop good relationships with the students who I teach. |
Tutoring Approach: Once I have established the strengths and weaknesses of the student, I tailor the content of the tutorials to suit the needs of that student. In maths and physics it is important for the student to have a clear understanding of the basic ideas and principles of the subjects, this is where we will start. Once the basic concepts are understood, the tutorials will have a bias toward exam technique and preparing for the final exam. This has proven to be a very effective method of boosting grades in my own exams and in those of my previous students. I have many years experience sitting examinations myself and have lots of advice in how to prepare for and perform well on the big day. |

View Katherine's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Katherine: I have been described as friendly and kind, which I believe are important qualities for a tutor to have. I enjoy chatting to people about their experiences in life and seeing what we can learn from each other - I am good at listening as well as at relating what I have to say in an interesting and clear manner. I am adaptable and sensitively aware to other people worries and lack of confidence. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored a Key Stage 2 student in Maths, taught two young teenagers the flute and mentored and tutored a Classics and English Student at university. I have worked in a bilingual school in Romania and have done work experience at a number of Junior schools in England. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe in listening to one's student, finding out what they know and discovering the most effective way for the individual concerned to learn. I do not believe in "dumbing down" for "less able" students as I think this complicates matters. I find the best approach is to encourage the pupil to find things out for themselves, giving them guidance, advice, explanations and, most importantly, encouragement, along the way. |

Whilst focussing on exams where appropriate I also aim to ensure language learning is enjoyable. All skills are covewred, with an emphasis on oral work. I always give homework, unless there is a convincing reason not to! |

Types of Tutoring: Online
| About Diana: I am a medical student in my clinical years. I am very passionate about teaching, and my greatest joy is in seeing people making an improvement on subjects that they need more help in. I am patient and determined to work hard. I have completed 4 GCSE A levels in singapore, and I have scored As for those. I love sciences and maths, and the only thing I love more than them is teaching them. I have been taking Japanese course and have reached pre-advance level. Due to time constrain I have yet to take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), but based on my estimation, I am ready to take JLPTII. |
Teaching Experience: My teaching experience lies on teaching my friends and family members. |
Tutoring Approach: I would want to go along with the pace that is comfortable for you, please give me feedback on whether the lesson is going too slowly/fast. (I would always be available to answer any questions regarding the subjects, just drop me a mail) For the sciences and math: I would start with the topic of your choice, giving full explaination of what it involves and have a chat to clear out any questions you might have. Then I would send some exercise questions which I would mark and return with feedback. Following that, I would like to start a chat so that I can do an informal quiz to go through the subject; to find out what you now know and what else you need to know. For Japanese language: Every week I would start with a word document describing a grammar point, and I would describe fully on how to use it. I would give a range of vocabulary that can be used alongside the grammar to be memorized for the particular lesson. After a sufficient time ( decided by you) I would want to start a chat to answer any questions you have. Following that, I would give some exercises to be completed, and I would mark it and mail it back with some feedback. In addition to that, I will be available to chat in Japanese to practice what you have learn so far. (I would be glad to give pointers on how to type Japanese in the computer) |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Jennifer: I am a fully qualified primary school teacher with over 2 years teaching experience. I now tutor on a one-to-one or small group basis. I am available most days and evenings during the week. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching at a junior school for the past two years. Before this I studied at University for a BA (Hons) Professional Studies in Primary Education with ICT, a three year course, which I completed in July 2006. The course had an emphasis on teaching children between the ages of 5 - 11 years of age, and my subject specialism was ICT. I also have taken and passed the QTS skills tests in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT. |
Tutoring Approach: I tailor my teaching to the pupil's needs. I like to find out how confident the pupil is with the subject and where their strengths and weaknesses lie. When this identified I work on these with the pupil during tutorial sessions in a fun and enjoyable way, to support and progress their learning. I use a lot of praise and positive encouragement to boost the child's confidence and willingness to learn. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Abimbola: My name is Abimbola Osho but you can call me BB. I'm a 21 year old girl who recently graduated from Imperial College where I studied Mechanical Engineering. I'm a fun yet efficient person who takes pride in her school work and I am currently awaiting admission into a PhD program. I have always wanted to be a teacher however, my parents wouldn't allow me as they feel it isn't a lucrative business. I have no criminal record and you can be rest assured that you will receive top results if I tutor you. |
Teaching Experience: I am the oldest of five children and anytime I am back home, I always tutor my siblings in all their subjects. During my A' levels, I was the smartest student in the boarding house and as a result of this, a lot of the other students used to ask me for help with their school work. In fact one student in particular I helped him get a B in his Maths A' Levels where he was predicted a D. During university, I did a stint with University Tutors a tutoring agency set up by university students. However I was forced to drop out as I couldn't balance it with school work. |
Tutoring Approach: In my opinion, no subject is difficult and no one is dumb. With the little experience I have, I find that the first thing is to grab the tutees attention. To do this, I usually find whatever their interested in and apply it to the problem. For instance, my brother is very interested in sports so I usually use a football analogy to explain Maths to him. If this method doesn't work, I just take it back to the basics and build up from there. I also believe in having a lesson plan which should be adhered to. However, I am very flexible. |
