About Benjamin:
Hi, my name is Ben. I am 25 year old postgraduate student currently pursuing a PhD in Earth Sciences at Oxford University. With my academic background I am well trained in Maths and the physical sciences. I Love to teach and help students develop an understanding and passion for math and the sciences. I would describe myself as a very enthusiastic teacher who is highly motivated to help students dramatically improve their level of ability for their subject of difficulty. I am also happy to tutor students to an advanced level of study if necessary.

Teaching Experience:

One years tutoring experience, mostly in Maths but also in Physics, Chemistry and English. I typically tutor students between ages of 11 and 18 for one to two hours per week in their chosen subject. References available on request.

Tutoring Approach:

To begin with, my first priority is to understand the level of ability each student has in their subject and what the main areas of study are in which they need to improve. This normally involves a review of some of the main principles of the relevant topic for the first few sessions and listening to any questions the student may have from what they have learnt to date in class. Once I have an idea of the main issues that need to be addressed I can begin to work on breaking down problems into concepts the student can better understand. In addition to helping my students better understand difficult topics I aim to improve their confidence in learning and increase their enthusiam for the subject of interest.

About Maha:
I have flexible hours and a flexible approach to tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught in university and community college classrooms for the last ten years, both French and English, language and literature. I have worked at summer schools, teaching language to classes aged eight to fifteen. I have also conducted private lessons with all ages, from eleven to sixty.

Tutoring Approach:

When tutoring a student who is taking classes as well as being tutored, I prefer to use their primary course as a starting off point for the lesson, but to take the themes and delve more deeply and provide more opportunity to practice. When tutoring an individual not affiliated with a program, I prefer to work with the student to devise the type of course that suits them, with a focus based on what they intend to use their language skills for.

About Chia Chia:
I am current finished second year (Chemical Engineering) in Imperial College, and ready to go third year in Oct. 2008. I really good at science and math, and familiar with exam board in GCSE and A-level especially maths. My past exam results were all above 85% and maths was above 95% in A-level, this convinced me to be a tutor in order to teach and give ideas to other student ways to achieve best performance in exam. I am patient and enthusiastic in teaching , since I have given lots of help to my friends in past as well. My Taiwanese background has meant that I have a good foundation to build on.

Teaching Experience:

I have had some experiences in private tutoring for GCSE sometime last year and the student successful obtained A* in maths and sciences in the end. Moreover I have also taught the student whose grade has turned from C to A in A-level maths in the end.

Tutoring Approach:

I have developed my own teaching methods that students understand very quickly and are able to apply to questions immediately. My methods are original and have been so successful with students. Good notes are vital to doing well in maths and sciences, and I provide a complete set of course notes for you during the tutorial. I take care to write notes that are organized and well-structured, with enough examples to cover all the common exam questions. This will help you greatly as you''ll be able to do all your revision from these notes, and they'll be a lot easier to understand than any current textbook.

About Paul:
Apart from being an active teacher, I've also had jobs and interests in many other aspects of life, giving me a wide variety of experiences which I find helpful when teaching young people. I've also helped bring up two children of my own and have two lovely granddaughters, which help to give me another perspective of the learning experience and the attitudes of young people today.

Teaching Experience:

I have a B.A. [Hons] in Primary Education and have taught both full time in schools and for the past seven years I've been supply teaching. During this time I have taught in over 100 different schools over quite a wide area and encountered children of all abilities, attitudes and ethnic backgrounds. I have taught all age ranges from Nursery to 11+ and older children in a Special School, although the majority of my teaching has been in Key Stage 2.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel that tutoring, especially one-to-one, should be tailored to gently push children further than they would be able to get in the normal classroom situation, especially by matching the teaching and learning style to the individual child. By starting gradually and steadily progressing children often out-perform anything they thought possible. I find that children learn best in a quiet, settled environment, which is why I offer the facility at my house, or try to achieve in the child's own home.

About Geoffrey:
I am a confident person, reliable and honest. I like helping people and I really enjoy to see them improve their level.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a French tutor for the last six months via Keepschool.
I have also been a tutor at university

Tutoring Approach:

First of all, find out the will and the difficulties of people. Then, teach them both writing and speaking French. Working regularly is the best way to maintain and improve any level.
The best kind of lesson is based on several parts, speaking and writing ones. After a while, conversations are a very good and useful way to improve a good level.

About Piers:
My name is Piers von Berg. I graduated in 2000 from St Andrews University with first class honours in International Relations. I recently completed a Graduate Diploma in Law and Bar Vocational Course at City Law School, London; in my second year I tutored Criminal Law at City Law School. From 2000-2004 I worked for the George Soros Foundation lecturing conflict studies and globalisation.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught international politics for four years and criminal law for one year at university level. I have taught first and second year undergraduates and have much sympathy for those grappling with these subjects for the first time. I have also tutored final year and Masters students.

I have taught a lot of basic and advanced essay writing skills for social sciences and law (including legal problem questions).

I currently provide tutorials on a private basis. Please note - I have just registered with UK Tutors and I am awaiting my CRB check (I have no previous convictions).

Tutoring Approach:

My first aim is to identify at what stage students are at in their studies and what tasks they have as regards exams or coursework. I would then discuss areas of difficulty with the student, and with younger pupils, their parents. I then discuss and agree with the student how we will go forward together to address these needs.

At university level, I find that law and politics students often have difficulty with particular topics which need simple and precise explanations (diagrams also come in useful). For example, telling the differences between subjective and objective recklessness in criminal law, or between neo and classical realism in international relations. In addition, there is no substitute for exam and essay practice, and I always follow this up with extensive and constructive feedback, ideally in discussion with the student to build confidence levels.

At A-level social science (e.g. history and politics), there are similar issues such as confidence in exams, exam technique, and discovering what approaches turn a B plus into a strong A grade. For example, learning how to strike balances in "discuss" type essay questions or, being able to use "spider" or "fish" charts to organise thoughts and ideas before writing. Again, practice questions are essential to developing technique and confidence, especially when followed with constructive and affirmative feedback.

At GCSE level, I understand a need for shorter and more carefully managed tasks to build up confidence and understanding. For example, 30-40 word answers to several questions on a set text, or a longer 300-400 composition on a particular event or period. This is prefaced by an oral explanation, discussion and question and answer session, as well as set reading. Writing and research tasks are then followed by assessment, discussion, feedback and often, repeat tasks.

Across the age-groups I find that identifying mistakes must go hand-in-hand with inviting or suggesting alternatives. Most importantly, students thrive where a teacher can convey an enthusiasm for the subject and find ways to engage the student's interest and attention.

About Sue:
I like learning and am always keen to learn new things. Recently I started a 'Scrapbooking Club' and run scrapbooking workshops. Maths has been a favourite subject of mine since I was a school. I am a mother of grown up children.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a school teacher for 15 years and tutored students up to GCSE in Maths. I am a Graduate in Education.

Tutoring Approach:

I Love Maths! I believe passionately that children can learn to like Maths and do well at it. If you get the fundamental building blocks in place then the rest comes naturally. I start by assessing the student to determine their areas of weakness (and their areas of strength). I then develop a plan which will enable the student to gain confidence and develop their skill in the subject. My approach to tutoring Maths is to make it enjoyable, relevant and practical.
In English I believe that it is important to find what the student enjoys and to build their skill level by using relevant material which is neither to hard or too easy.

About Claire:
I am a recent Oxford University graduate, and gained a 2.1 in my French and German Degree, with distinction in the colloquial use of French and German. I am able to cater for all levels of language learning, from the beginner up to the university student. I can also teach a broad range of language skills, from reading, writing, listening and speaking to literature study and exam preparation, plus university entry, including Oxbridge.

Teaching Experience:

I lived and worked as an English teacher in France for a year where I was teaching a range of language skills to groups of 4 - 25 students, of differing ages and abilities. As such I am very flexible as to what age, level or number of students I can tutor. I have also undertaken some one-to-one tuition in the UK.

Tutoring Approach:

As above, I can teach a broad range of language skills, all of which are essential to the competent linguist. Students tend to learn best by understanding the language, rather than merely learning set phrases 'by heart', and it is therefore this principle that governs my tutoring. I try to use a variety of language learning resources, from text books and work books to radio and video clips, music and film. I am extremely enthusiastic about my subjects, and so I will try to make your learning fun and enjoyable in a relaxed, but focused, atmosphere.

About Duncan:
Currently studying for a doctorate in fields of chemistry and applied business at Cranfield University. I graduated in 2005 from Birmingham University with an honors degree (Msci) in Chemistry (2i). I have also completed the core modules of the Cranfield MBA and would feel comfortable teaching business statistic, finance, economics and accounting to more mature students( e.g. MBA students). I have a wealth of academic experience I am willing to share and I fully enjoy the rewards of tutoring.

I have held several positions of responsibility including some experience of management. Whilst studying full time at university I held down two part time jobs.

I am also a keen sportsman and currently I am captain the university football team as well as playing rugby as well as other sports. I consider myself to be extremely outgoing, dedicated, motivated and sociable as well as hardworking and organised. In my spare time I enjoy listen to and playing music as well as keeping fit and visiting the gym.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring for a while now and have picked up the key skills necessary to promote success in my candidates. I also have experience in holding tutorials and practical classes/workshops for undergraduates whilst at University. I have been involved in numerous training exercises to do with my work outside of university and also some sports coaching as well. I have been told that I have a good ability in explaining difficult concepts to people. I am always keen to learn and adapt new skills/knowledge for myself.

Tutoring Approach:

I have found through my experience that the best methods of learning is through setting realistic and dynamic targets, working through examples and having an approachable teacher. I would set about teaching by explaining the concepts of a particular theory or problem and then mentor a student through a set of example questions either from past exam papers of from a syllabus. I would then expect the student to approach the problem by themselves with a realistic amount of homework and then discuss any errors or difficulties faced.

About Michael:
I am a 21 year old student who has just received my BA in History at the University of Liverpool in which I achieved a 2.1 and I am about to start my law conversion course at the University of Chester in September. For my A-Levels I received an A in History, an A in Biology, an A in Computing and an A in General Studies. I am a bright, intelligent and patient person with plenty of drive to succeed.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored several children ranging from 14 years of age to 18 for nearly six months in both Biology and History from which all of the children obtained top marks in their relevant subjects. I have no formal teaching degree but I have learned the subjects to a sufficient level high which I believe gives me a better up to date working knowledge of that subject.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that with my age I am able to relate to students much easier which means that students will find it easier to learn. Having just recently finished my BA and only finished my A-Levels 3 years ago means that I have an up to date working knowledge of the requirements needed to achieve top grades in both History and Biology. I will prepare the student for their relevant exam by not only teaching them the subject but by giving them good exam technique so that they know the exact points that they need to make, for them to achieve the top marks.
