| About Emma: I am a student at Brunel University studying financial mathematics, I have taught many of my family and friends and am always helping around exam time. I enjoy teaching children and have found that if you give some children a chance to think without rushing them it works wonders. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught many students at GCSE level in mathematics, have taught basic french to students and also alot of family friends and family. |
Tutoring Approach: I make teaching fun, I interact games (especially for younger students) so that they catch on quicker without noticing that they are learning. I also encourage my students to do a little bit of homework for me each week (only about half an hours worth as i know that they have their own school work to do) but this does stop them forgetting what they have learnt the week before. I also like to interact the parents in sitting and learning with their children (if the parents wish to) so that the work does not seem like such a chore but like a family activity with games. |

View Emma's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Emma: I am a hard-working, experienced and enthusiastic teacher. I have a great passion for English language and literature which I hope to pass on to my tutees. I have enjoyed passing on my knowledge over the past seven years as a classroom teacher, and I am looking forward to returning to work as a private tutor to offer some vital one-on-one help, encouragement and confidence where it is needed. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked as a secondary school teacher for almost seven years, in Australia and the UK. I have worked chiefly as an English teacher, but I also have some experience in French, Indonesian and drama. I have worked on language and literacy programmes with special needs students, as well as extension programmes for gifted students. As well as my everyday classroom teaching, I have also planned and delivered after-school and holiday revision sessions. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that one-on-one assistance can make an immense difference to a student's attainment. I would usually begin a tutoring assignment by finding out about a tuee's feelings about English, where they feel their challenges are, and what they think of the texts they are studying. I feel it is important that I get to know a bit about the student and their needs before planning out our sessions. I would also ask to see the tasks the tutee has been set by their classroom teacher, and would work with the student on raising the quality of each task. |

| About Mark: I am a 22 year old student at Portsmouth University and I am Currently studying Criminology and Criminal Justice in my final year there. I feel i have gained a lot of academic experience and can pass this on to those i tutor. I am friendly, approachable and outgoing and can communicate with varying age groups. |
Teaching Experience: Having already done several work placements in primary schools and having tutored privately several times beofre i feel i have a firm grounding in what is required of a tutor both academically and people skills wise. Upon completion of my Degree I have already been accepted to teach for a Secondary School within Portsmouth which I believe reflects how hard I work to achieving goals. |
Tutoring Approach: I feel that it is very important to get to know the individual you are tutoring, obviously different people learn at different levels but you must also identify the best methods at getting them to understand the work they are undertaking. I like to interact with those i tutor and clarify what will be expected of them in exams or essays- together we then come up with an action plan of how best to appraoch a particular issue, especially if they are struggling with it. |

View Simon's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Simon: Relatively new to tutoring, but with five years experience of working with young people aged 4 - 18, I've recently gained a First class degree in English from King's College London. I am self employed, and when not tutoring (English, Drama, Singing), I work as a theatre director, actor, journalist and workshop leader. I have a genuine passion for theatre and for literature, and have been told that my enthusiasm is catching... |
Teaching Experience: From 2001 - 2005 I worked full time as Associate Director of Playbox Theatre - a theatre devoted to the work of young people. I ran theatre workshops for young people, from pre-schoolers to teenagers, helping them develop skills, confidence and imagination. I also ran workshops for SAT, GCSE and A-Level groups within schools, aiming to open set texts up through a theatrical, hands-on approach. I continue to do such work on a part time freelance basis. I am also a qualified singing teacher, and have students from the ages of 6 - 60. I have tutored several students in English at various levels, all with great success. |
Tutoring Approach: As previously mentioned, I like to approach texts from a fresh angle, to open the tutee's eyes to a new way of looking at things. This often involves theatrical techniques in an attempt to bring the text to life. I am by no means strict, but adopt a 'friendly but firm' manner in my teaching, although I adapt this to suit the individual tutee's needs and personality. I encourage creative personal expression through language, but at the same time I place a great deal of importance on correct grammar and spelling, and will help tutees construct perfect essays, looking at all aspects of writing, from choice of words to paragraph structure, to the use of quotations and correct footnoting. Without wanting to sound like a cliche, I aim to make English and Drama fun, and hope to make my tutees enjoy these subjects as much as I do. |
