About Beth:
I am 27 years old and have just moved to York from Australia, with my husband.
I love to read and spend time with my friends and family.

Teaching Experience:

I am a qualified Primary School teacher, and have 9 years experience working with children from 6 weeks old up to 15 years old.
I have a wide variety of teaching methods to help students develop their learning skills and succeed in the classroom.
My expertise in Maths is in teaching strategies for the 4 number operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
I have a very strong background in Literacy learning. I have many skills to assist students to improve their reading and comprehension ability, increase their vocabulary and improve their spelling.

Tutoring Approach:

I approach tutoring with a strong focus on identifying the needs of the tutee, and responding to the learning styles that suit them best.
For younger students I prefer to make the learning experiences 'hands-on', and so I bring a number of learning tools to assist them to problem solve.
I also like to leave my students with some visual reminders, and so prepare laminated cards that they can keep, and use to study until my next lesson with them.

About David:
I have just finished my Second Year of French Studies at The University of Warwick, I have gotten Firsts in Medieval and Translation modules.
I am twenty years old and have teaching experience with all ages and abilities, I am friendly, smart, well-presented, polite, and very encouraging of any student.
I plan to become a teacher after graduation, and this would be useful experience for me towards this.

Teaching Experience:

I have not long finished the Student Associate Scheme through Warwick University, where I was given teacher training sessions and taught in a local Secondary School. I began by observing lessons alongside teacher training sessions, and later prepared and delivered my own starter activities before teaching whole French lessons to Years 7 and 8.
Also, during this scheme I took intensive language classes for GCSE oral preparation, as well as being an assistant teacher in GCSE Science lessons and the Special Needs Department.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is based around the student, what I plan to do will be to support what the school has already done, reenforce prior knowledge of the subject by going more in depth on a one-to-one basis than could be achieved in school lessons. When I am confident that the student has a very strong knowledge of the foundations of the subject I plan to take them one step further and no more, otherwise I will cause the student to lose interest in school time, which will undo any progress that has been made.
My approach is very active, I like to use lots of different techniques, and try to incorporate visual, oral and kinaesthetic learning techniques into my teaching. Obviously I will focus on the technique which the student finds most effective, however, this does not stop me using a variety of techniques meaning that their memory of what has been taught is reenforced in many different ways.

About Sarah:
I am an Oxford University Graduate (BA in Ancient and Modern History). I am currently working on a MA in International Relations. I am originally from the United States, and attended a renounced Science and Maths Institute there before attending Oxford.

Teaching Experience:

I spent 2006-2007 school year teaching Maths and European History at Stone Mountain School in North Carolina in the USA. I was working with boys aged 11-18, specializing with students with Dyslexia and other learning disabilities.
In 2004 and 2005 I spent 6 months in Panama tutoring. I worked with students ages 9-16, and worked primarily with students who had grown up speaking English and had only recently been enrolled in Spanish speaking schools.

Tutoring Approach:

Most student I have worked with have been learning for a specific exam or syllabus. Therefore, I usually use this as the starting point from which to begin each lesson, and then try to discover which aspects of a subject interest the student and use this to build their knowledge base and understanding upon.

About kevin:
I have over seven years experience tutoring privately. I particularly enjoy seeing a pupil master an area that had been previously inaccessible to that pupil and sharing the joy that is felt. Most of my teaching experience has been gathered working with SEN pupils and I am well aware of the need to be consistent, patient, creative and supportive when tutoring - all qualities that I possess in abundance.

Teaching Experience:

2004-Present: Head of English/History, Mill Hill County High School, Oak Hill Campus (Specialist EBD school), East Barnet London
2004 Jan-2004 Jul: teacher of English/SEN, Lea Valley High School, Enfield London. Specialist Sports College and mixed secondary school catering to over 1000 pupils, 45% of whom are statemented as having SEN.
Sep 2003-Jan 2004: Teacher of Geography/SEN, Wandle Valley EBD school, Carshalton Surrey
1999-2003: Teacher of History/English/Citizenship, Charlie Smith High School, Kingston Jamaica

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer not to be overly intrusive. I will guide and support pupils as much as possible and give them as much resources as they need. However, i do believe in encouraging pupils to learn at their own pace and within the constraints of their respective learning styles. I believe in empowering my tutees to 'discover' and to solve problems with my help as opposed to being totally reliant on me for the answers.

About Sumuhan:
I am a Software Engineer. But I enjoy teaching Maths and Physics. I believe success in Maths and Physics can be so easy if teaching is done in the right way. I also believe every child would love these subjects if taught in the right way. And I have proved it again and again every time I had a chance.

Teaching Experience:

I was tutoring for about 4 years while I was studying electronic engineering after my A/Levels. Although it is not a long time, I had a chance to teach a fair number of students of varying ability levels. But that was about 10 years ago. Although I stopped tutoring once I started working full time, I continued to help children in our family with maths every now and then. Recently I have started teaching again in the evenings and weekends.

I offer the first session free of charge to help you decide if I am the right tutor for you.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe the most common problem students face with maths and physics is incomplete understanding of the basic concepts. Once this is identified and corrected, it changes their perception of the subject dramatically. It makes all the difference between 'I hate maths!' and 'I Love Maths!'. So I always make sure that the students understand the basics well. That is my highest priority as a tutor.

The second most common problem is lack of practice. Learning these subjects is a bit like learning to swim or ride a bike. The more you practice the better. So once I have made sure they understand the subject matter, I make sure they do a large number of questions. That gives them lots of practice and confidence and prepares them well for the exams

I also think learning should be an enjoyable experience to the students. Most students find Maths and Physics boring. So I am always looking for ways to make things more interesting. I always relate the subject to everyday life situations and interesting examples. I am developing an interactive educational software product that uses animations and graphics to make learning fun. I am planning to use this product as an aid to teaching with all my students in the near future.

About Casee:
I'm a self employed tutor specialising in maths and sciences and based in York. When I'm not tutoring I like writing music, reading, being a bit of a computer geek and listening to music. School is useful, but I remember not liking it very much, which is one of the reasons I decided to start tutoring. I think learning should be something that you choose how to do, and I don't think a lot of schools can accommodate different learning styles. I really enjoy finding different ways to explain things. I can't promise it will always be exciting (sometimes we are slaves to the syllabus), but it will be understandable and accessible.

Teaching Experience:

I've been teaching for over ten years now, both one to one and in the classroom. Although I don't have a formal teaching qualification, I do have a qualification to teach English as a Second Language, and I've learnt over the years the best ways to present new ideas and revise old ones.

Tutoring Approach:

In our first session, I would want to have a chat with you about what you want to get out of the sessions, and there may be a short assessment test. I try to tailor individual teaching to each student, so if you learn best using posters and pretty colours, we would use those, if you prefer to read and discuss, we'd do it that way and so on. I would regular assess your understanding, check that each topic is fully understood before moving on, and if you are preparing for an exam we would also do practice papers together and plan your revision strategy. This is your time, so you would also be free to bring school work for assistance, or to request that we do a topic that you are covering at school. It's all very flexible, although I do set homework.

About David:
I have recently completed my MSc in Business Economics and Finance. I passed with merit. I received my Bachelors degree from Boston University School of Management in Finance with a 2.1 (equivalent). Prior to studying finance I studied Engineering and thus my strong maths skills. I also have a very strong command of the English language.

I am currently working for a large energy trading firm, managing capital projects.

Teaching Experience:

I was a peer tutor in university in Calculus, Economics, Business and I led a number of lectures in Business EconomicsI have volunteered as a tutor for a little over a year teaching 7-10 years olds how to read.

Tutoring Approach:

Maths:
One does not learn Maths; instead they understand it. This is the cornerstone of my approach. Once the maths 'click' in a students head, it is very hard for it to un-click. Thus, I provide an almost Socratic approach to maths, which stimulates the student to develop the answer on his/her own.

About Khalil:
I am a young, enthusiastic and experienced teacher currently teaching maths at a Secondary College in Leicester.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for just over two and a half years. During this time I have gained experience of teaching mathematics to all ages between 11 and 19.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to provide a relaxed atmosphere for students in which they can feel confident of their progression in the subject. I intend to build their confidence by presenting maths to them in an enjoyable and inspiring manner. Students often find it difficult to relate maths to any future career which is why I try to teach them the practical application of topics where possible. I can prepare students for SAT's, GCSE's and A-levels by teaching on a one-to-one basis or as a group of 2-3 students. I will implement the National Numeracy Strategy as recommended by the government and provide homeworks and other resources to enhance learning.

About Giuseppe:
I am a young and confident student. Currently at my second university year.
German and Italian are my mother tongue, and I also speak Spanish fluently.
I did my A-Levels at a German school in Italy, graduating with excellent degrees.
Besides that my hobbies are sports.

Teaching Experience:

Since I am 16 I did private tutoring for German, Italian and Spanish at almost every level.

Tutoring Approach:

Firstly I would need to see the task, and get to know the student a little bit. So that I will be able to customize the lesson. I usually try to stimulate students to think by themselves.

About David:
Hello, I am a very friendly and outgoing 23 year old man from Aberdeen. I am a recent law graduate and have a record of good academic achievement. I am friendly, patient and have an organised goal-orientated approach. In my spare time away from university I play 5-aside football and enjoy playing squash.

Teaching Experience:

I have assisted some family friends in Higher English and Higher Modern Studies. Furthermore I am accustomed to helping young people with their studies because I have a nephew who is of secondary school age. Although I may not have vast experience, I bring a determined and pragmatic approach to gaining the best results for my students whilst maintaining a sense of enjoyment.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to gain a friendly rapport with my pupils and then assess exactly what they need help with. This would involve looking over the objectives and deadlines of the course involved and formulating a plan with the student. I would then assess the students strengths/weaknesses and anxieties to determine where our initial focus would lie.
