About Chau:
I'm Vietnamese but i can speak English fluently.
I have done my A levels in the UK and got 4A in Maths, Further Maths , Physics and Economics.
For Maths and Further Maths, I both got over 95%.
I'm currently studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering at UCL.
I enjoy helping people and have good communication skills.

Teaching Experience:

I haven't got any experience in tutoring, however I have been helping my classmates with maths and physics problems during my school times.

Tutoring Approach:

In my opinion, a good tutor should be able to identify the problems quickly and then be able to explain to student in the most simple way. I also think the tutor should be able to make the student feel comfortable, not put so much pressure on the student so that the student can work more efficiently. A good tutor also need to be patient and a good listener.

About Janneke:
I am a Dutch woman of 31 years of age. At the beginning of August 2007 I moved from the Netherlands to the UK. I live with my British partner in Gloucester.
I have two Dutch degrees in Higher Professional Education:
PABO Teacher's Training College - Primary Education
Facilitary Services - Consumer Affairs

Teaching Experience:

At the moment I work on Saturdays as a primary teacher at a Dutch language and culture school in Chester. There I teach children, who are related to The Netherlands, the Dutch language and culture. We use an official Dutch primary school method and are monitored by the Dutch education-inspection.
Before I moved to the UK I worked for 4,5 years as a teacher at a Dutch primary school for special education. I taught children with learning difficulties and/or behaviour problems. Before that time I worked as an employee in communication and as a management assistant. I am a native Dutch speaker, but also fluent in English (verbally and written).

Tutoring Approach:

The following three aspects are very important and are conditions to develop: Safety - Confidence - Independancy. I find it important that a child feels safe during tuition and has confidence in himself/herself , the tutor and the situation, and feels independant. Only when those conditions are achieved a child is able to learn and develop. I look at someones aim(s) and abilities and adapt my tuition on those aspects. Together we try to take the next step on the ladder.

About Sara:
I am a French student currently doing a Master in "Law and Anthropology" at the London School of Economics.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working as a private tutor in Alphatutors for one year. French is the most convenient subject for me to teach not only because it is my native language but also because I know the syntactical rules of it having been writing several essays and academic articles.
nb: I also have had experience in teaching French to children as their first foreign language.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is both traditional and alternative since while I am preparing outlines and assigning homeworks for each lesson, I also encourage the students to participate orally during the whole time of the tution and discussing with them the logic of the rules in order to teach them substantial French. This prepare and motivate them to solve the questions and problems using the knowledge they acquire from the tuition.

About Emilie:
I am a French student at the University of Northumbria. I study modern languages -English and Spanish- therefore, I have access to a variety of materials which can be more than useful for my tuties. As French is my mother tongue, I can also teach students or adults at a high level.

Teaching Experience:

I have tought English to French pupils from beginners to advanced level. I am very patient and am used to work with children and teenagers as I am a camp counsellor. I always try to find original and interactive ways such as new technologies to teach languages in a less academic atmosphere.

Tutoring Approach:

The tutor has to analyse the weeknesses of his tuty and teach him whatever his needs. One to one teaching is a great opportunity to progress in a language.

About Kate:
I have recently completed a BA degree in law at New College, Oxford University. After my first year as an undergraduate I was given a scholarship in recognition of academic achievement and was subsequently the recipient of a variety of other prizes and awards. I anticipate gaining a degree classification of 2:1 or higher, and am planning to go on to study for a Masters in law. I achieved an A grade in all four of my A levels, achieving full marks in English Language/Literature. I live in Caerphilly, South Wales and would teach from home. I furthermore performed highly in the LNAT (law entrance examinations) and can offer helpful mentoring in the technique required to do well in this.

Teaching Experience:

Although I have no formal teaching experience I have given gratuitous help to exam candidates in the past (with much success) and have the invaluable advantage that only just having graduated, the current exam formats, types of questions etc are still familiar and fresh to me.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring would be to prepare the candidate with a strong reservoir of both brute knowledge coupled with original and insightful analysis in every area that can be applied to almost any question in such a way as to make the candidate truly stand out.

About Carol:
I currently work full time at the Institute of Education and have a keen interest in accent reduction and pronunciation training, a currently undervalued aspect of learning English as a foreign language.

Teaching Experience:

As an undergraduate student I have taught fellow students and those in business conversational English, as well as exam preparation, revision and practice, job applications and interview role-play

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching approach is fun but practical. My methods involve one-to-one training using 'tracking' techiques and phonetics using my own developed materials. The emphasis is on 'real-world' examples as well as practical every day application and ongoing development

About Catherine:
I am a current undergraduate of the University of York studying Chemistry. I did Biology, Chemistry and Physics for A level, and Maths for AS.

I found out this year that I am mildly dyslexic. This hasn't seemed to have affected my studies too much until university level, but has meant that I am more aware of other people's difficulties and strengths.

I am a member of St John Ambulance, so I am CRB checked.

A level marks, Biology B, Chemistry C, Physics C
AS marks, Maths D
GCSE marks, Double Science: A*A*, Maths A

Teaching Experience:

Being a house prefect at my final school meant that I dealt with all kinds of problems. Mainly social, but I did have younger students come to me for help with their science problems. They tended to find that my explanations were easier to understand than some of the examples they were given.

I am also an adult instructor at a local Cadet Unit.

Tutoring Approach:

I use real-life examples where possible, and will use visual aids. I myself have found that learning by wrote isn't always enough, and can lead to confusion later on. Therefore by learning the concept behind the subject being taught is very useful, especially if it connects to other subjects. It helps to reinforce other subjects and helps lateral thinking skills.

I will use the text-books and examples the school teacher has already given, as introducing too much information can cause confusion. I will endeavour to use the right kind of information and learning style for each individual student.

About Lorenzo:
I am Italian, aged 29, currently living in Brighton where I finished a MSc in Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems (including topics such as computer programming, mathematics, evolutionary studies, biology, neuroscience and philosophy).

In my free time I am a Tango dancer (Argentinian Tango) and a photographer.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience is (unfortunately!) limited to:
- teaching system administration to professionals (a 40-hour crash course on linux and system administration)
- informally teaching computer science, networking and UNIX/Linux administration to fellows of the Linux User Group in Mantova (of which I am a co-founder)
- volunteering to teach pupils upon request (in Italy)

Tutoring Approach:

Apart from love of science, the main reason why I enrolled into college the second time was to pursue the academic career and to become a professor. Even though my teaching experience has been limited due to lack of concrete possibilities (tutoring is much less common in Italy than in the UK), every time I had the chance to teach it was one of the most beautiful experience in my life. The joy of seeing the other person understand and learn (a skill, a theory, an application, a concept) cannot be compared to anything else.
