About Abimbola:
My name is Abimbola Osho but you can call me BB. I'm a 21 year old girl who recently graduated from Imperial College where I studied Mechanical Engineering. I'm a fun yet efficient person who takes pride in her school work and I am currently awaiting admission into a PhD program. I have always wanted to be a teacher however, my parents wouldn't allow me as they feel it isn't a lucrative business. I have no criminal record and you can be rest assured that you will receive top results if I tutor you.

Teaching Experience:

I am the oldest of five children and anytime I am back home, I always tutor my siblings in all their subjects. During my A' levels, I was the smartest student in the boarding house and as a result of this, a lot of the other students used to ask me for help with their school work. In fact one student in particular I helped him get a B in his Maths A' Levels where he was predicted a D. During university, I did a stint with University Tutors a tutoring agency set up by university students. However I was forced to drop out as I couldn't balance it with school work.

Tutoring Approach:

In my opinion, no subject is difficult and no one is dumb. With the little experience I have, I find that the first thing is to grab the tutees attention. To do this, I usually find whatever their interested in and apply it to the problem. For instance, my brother is very interested in sports so I usually use a football analogy to explain Maths to him. If this method doesn't work, I just take it back to the basics and build up from there. I also believe in having a lesson plan which should be adhered to. However, I am very flexible.

About Franziska:
I am a 20-years old French student (3rd year at Science Po) born in Germany, thus speaking both languages absolutely fluently.
I am experienced, motivated, passionate and patient. I really like teaching in general both languages as I really like them and have a good knwledge of them.

Teaching Experience:

I have been giving private tuition classes for almost 4 years to youg children, teenagers and adults. I also have been tutoring voluntarily at my village's school.

Tutoring Approach:

I always try to make my lessons as pleasant as possible, for example creating crosswords to rehearse vocabulary for children or using films and radio programmes for teenagers/adults. But I also tend to give some homework (exercises to finish and vocabulary leaning mostly), as agreed beforehand (if parents rather prefer their children not to be given any homework, that's allright as well). Really, the level of demand depends on the kind of lessons you are looking for.

About Magdalena:
I'm a young, professional and ambitious PhD researcher. My project focuses on bilingual Polish-English children, and I am in my final year. I am a trustworthy person with her own initiative and drive. My creative side is expressed in music, photography, theatre...

Teaching Experience:

I began teaching English to secondary school pupils at the age of 21. Then I started working at a language school where I used to teach English to adults and children age 4-7, while still tutoring students age 16-19.
In 2005 I was awarded a 3-year PhD scholarship in the UK. It included teaching Polish at the University of Surrey, which I have been doing up till now. I teach Polish to students of various nationalities and ages.

Tutoring Approach:

I have always been a very patient teacher with a head full of ideas. I try to recognise the strongest sides to the students I teach. Each of us has a strong "channel" through which we learn. Some of us prefer writing tasks more than listening exercises. Some prefer visuals and others will be happy to learn a list of vocabulary items by heart. I try to get to know my students and work according to their learning nature.
My tutoring is always full of fun and discovering new areas, but also setting goals and trying to reach them.

About Caroline:
I have a PhD in Astrophysics from the University of Oxford. Before that, I completed a six year MSc course in Physics & Astronomy at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands. Currently I am working as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of London.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught many different types of people over a variety of subjects. For example, I have experience in tutoring Physics students (both full-time and mature) at degree level in Physics, Astrophysics, and various software packages (Matlab, Mathematica, IDL, Excel). I've taught children from the age of 7 upwards in Astrophysics. Furthermore, for years I have taught adults of the age of 50+ the very basics of using a personal computer, including using email and internet, and software packages such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).

Tutoring Approach:

I am an extremely patient and considerate tutor, adept at communicating with people of all ages.

For A-level and degree level students, I begin by identifying areas of weakness and developing a strategy and a sequence of lesson plans that are matched to the student's needs. I work with the pupil to set realistic and swift targets for improvement. My tuition allows for immediate, positive and corrective feedback to help the pupil quickly improve and permanently stay on track. I can also help with coursework and preparation for forthcoming examinations.

For casual learners in IT, I can visit their homes to work with them on their own computer. I can guide them from the very basics to advanced concepts such as creating computational spreadsheets in Excel, or the principles of programming. Lesson plans will be formed in communication with the student, and completely adapted to their needs and wishes.

About Ashleigh:
I am a qualified teacher with 15 years experience in Primary schools and as a private tutor offering individual lessons for children who need extra support with basic literacy. I use a range of personally tailored strategies, with a realistic phonetic approach to reading and and writing that doesn't over-simplify the English language yet gives children the understanding they need to make progress at all levels both in and out of school. I can to help them to enjoy and take control of their own learning, encouraging success through a structure of clear building blocks, without being afraid to look at mistakes and put them right. I also offer individual DRUM KIT tuition, MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MAKING and playing workshops, NURSERY CLASS MUSIC sessions, one-to-one INTERACTIVE MUSIC for adults with learning disabilities and BASIC MATHEMATICS tuition - please contact me for more information.

Teaching Experience:

After taking my degree I worked for 6 years as a Learning Support Assistant, specialising in helping children of all abilities who had missed out on learning to read in the school system. I worked with children who had 'slipped through the net' and become frustrated and negative for many different reasons, often from lack of continuity in teaching, through not having their work properly corrected or because of special needs that had not been addressed. I went on to take a Postgraduate Certificate of Education at Goldsmiths College, London, and since then have worked as a part-time visiting tutor as well as following my career as a professional musician.

Tutoring Approach:

I start with an assessment session, using word lists and graded texts to discover a child's present level of reading ability. With younger children I make an alphabet chart with word and pictures. They think of the words to use and we talk about the different sounds that the letters can make. We look at the difference between the vowels: a - e - i - o - u (and y) and the consonants, and at how sounds can be blended together, not forgetting that some words do not obey the 'rules'. I move on to a set of games and books to give practice at finding and remembering these sounds and patterns in words, and then we use them to write sentences which we cut up and rearrange to practice and reinforce both reading and writing skills. In this way the children are given challenges that they can succeed at, in stages of growing difficulty and at their own pace. Punctuation and grammar are introduced, as they are needed, to make the meaning clearer to the reader. I always aim to answer a child's questions and encourage them to use their curiosity.

About Monica:
I'm a 22 year old graduate, living in Stevenage. I graduated from Lancaster University in 2007 with a 2.1 BA(Hons) in English Literature, although I got high firsts in some modules, my areas of expertise proving to be women writers (from past to present) and my self-chosen dissertation module of a cognitive poetic analysis of children's picture books. This dissertation module, combined with my later experience at early years teacher training (PGCE) has given me a thorough background of the many ways picture books can be used to supplement teaching, a skill particularly appropriate for the younger tutees!

I am also capable of assisting study in higher education also, having fairly recently gone through the newly introduced assessment structure of GCSEs followed by a separate AS level and A level. I have A levels in English Language and Literature (A), Geography (A) and Maths (B) as well as 12 GCSE grades all A* or A (OK, I confess to a B in chemistry! teehee!) in English, Maths, Physics, Biology (I did the three sciences separately as a triple award instead of the standard double award), Statistics, French, Religious Education, Food Technology, Geography, History, Music.

I also have experience of working with Special Needs having been a play assistant and then Deputy Play Leader at a respite play-scheme for disabled children over most holidays between 2002 to 2007. I worked with a variety of conditions, for example, autism, Down's Syndrome, fragile X syndrome and unspecified behavioural difficulties.

Teaching Experience:

I began a PGCE in September 2007, but have decided to defer the second two terms for a year, to recuperate from the stress of finishing my degree! I have therefore completed a third of the Early Years PGCE, and gained much valuable information and experience both from the PGCE itself and from the experience it was necessary to have to be considered for the course.

This experience includes 2 weeks of observing and helping in year 4 and 5 classrooms, 8 months of helping one morning a week in a local pre-school, and 2 weeks of assisting in an Early Years unit (i.e. Nursery and Reception) at an OFSTED awarded excellence, school.

In addition to this I completed 5 weeks of placement in schools on the PGCE itself, and attended the more theoretical college based teaching as well.

I also taught English as a Foreign Language in Thailand for a month, to all primary school classes. One of the main lessons I learnt from this was how to create interesting lessons with very limited resources!

Tutoring Approach:

I would begin the tutoring with a session of getting to know the tutee. Not only is the tutor-tutee relationship vital to producing an environment conducive to learning, but I believe it is really important to discover a tutee's ideal learning style, whether they be visual, kinaesthetic, auditory or a combination. This allows both of us to determine ways of studying that will be most enjoyable for the tutee and allow them to take in more information.

I also think that prior to beginning studying any particular subject, there are some very useful tools for studying that can be learnt to apply to any area of the curriculum. These include learning how to make memorable mnemonics and how to use them effectively, how to mind map, how to use colour, diagrams and other devices to help with memory functions.

Finally, I think one of the most beneficial aspects of personal tutoring is that it is tailored to the individual. In a group situation, a concept may be explained in a way which teh majority of the class could understand but leaving a third or so in the dark, so to speak. Often, all that is needed is to present the idea in a different way for the idea to click! For example, in GCSE maths, I spent several lessons utterly bewildered by a strange circle split into quarters which was meant to help remember the values of sin and cos at certain degree angles. After explaining my difficulty to my father (I'm lucky enough to have two teachers for parents!) he solved the matter in seconds, presenting the information on a graph, and going into how one gets to those values in the first place. This was because he knew (from his many hours dedicated to teaching me maths!) that I always needed to know how to get to a certain equation or theory that was being used, before I could understand how it could be used.

Individual tutoring, perhaps most importantly, allows the tutee to go at their own pace. Rather than trying to keep up with a class who are racing ahead, or waste time going over a concept already thoroughly understood, precious time can be tailored to be spent on exactly what areas the tutee needs to work on, meaning an hour of personal tutoring can often produce results equivalent to a day spent in a classroom!

About Julian:
My name is Julian Waterfield and I have been teaching Religious Studies for a number of years in England, teaching pupils from 11-18 as well as some work in primary schools. I'm new to Belfast, but don't worry - the English and NI systems are very similar!

I've also got tutoring experience in intensive Easter revision courses as well as being an examiner at A-level (see below for more details). Married, with no children and three cats, I live in East Belfast.

Teaching Experience:

Head of department in secondary schools near Oxford and in Durham, teaching 11-18s from 2003-2008.

Senior examiner for Philosophy of Religion at A-level, marking a range of AS and A2 papers.

Regular Easter revision tutor with a major tuition company, providing intensive support for AS and A2 level students in all major papers within the subject (Philosophy, Ethics, Old and New Testaments, World Religions, Church History and so on...).

Tutoring Approach:

The most important thing is to assess your needs before making a decision about what to do and how to approach things. I support a skills-based approach rather than what simply amounts to memorising without understanding. I prefer working with individuals or small groups than larger groups when it comes to tutoring.

I can support what is being done in school or provide 'from scratch' tuition prior to exams.

I am happy to support online or else to tutor at my home (East Belfast) or yours. Please note that a mileage surcharge applies if I have to travel over 5 miles.

If you are a university-level or mature student, please feel free to contact me to discuss your needs before tying yourself in to paying out money!

About Nicola:
I am 33 years old and a former History teacher who is now retraining as a criminal barrister. I am well travelled and can speak French, Italian and German. I have a 2.1 BA Hons degree in History from Oxford and a Master in International Relations from the LSE. Since changing careers, I also now have a Graduate Diploma in Law and have passed the Bar Vocational Course; I was called to the Bar in October 2007. I love politics, current affairs and history and stood for Parliament representing the constituency of Islington North in the 2005 General Election. I am also a keen campaigner for environmental and feminist issues, and have advised the Conservative Party on environmental and sustainable energy policy.

Teaching Experience:

My first degree is in History, following which I obtained a Post-Graduate Certificate of Education at Bath University in Secondary History, which involved GCSE and A Level teaching. I then worked for 3 years as a History teacher at St George's British International School in Rome, becoming Head of History and teaching IGCSE and International Baccalaureate. During that time, I taught both small and large groups and also undertook one-to-one tutoring of students who needed extra coaching. I am a qualified examiner for the International Baccalaureate and have regularly marked examination papers. I also have experience in teaching English as a foreign language, both on a one-to-one basis and larger groups.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer to inspire rather than instruct and would love to pass on my passion for History and Politics, preserving the sparkle of learning for anyone who feels oppressed by the burden of exams. That does not mean sacrificing the rigours of academic achievement but combining academic excellence with the fun of knowledge and understanding.

About Lynne:
I am a friendly and approachable teacher and have high expectations. I try to help and encourage my students to reach their potential and enjoy their time with me.

Teaching Experience:

I taught in a secondary school for over six years until 2006 and since this time have been tutoring. I have experience across the 10-16 age range and ability range. I am also experienced in working with lower ability children, including those who have a Statement for Educational Needs. I teach both History and English up to GCSE and am experienced and skilled in exam preparation.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a patient and caring teacher and before I start with the lessons I discuss with the parent and the pupil their subject weaknesses. I also discuss what they are learning in school not only to give me the ability to help them understand the subject, but also to enable me to know what they want to achieve through my teaching. I give homework and then discuss with the pupil the different ways that they can make improvements so that they gain confidence with their studies.

I have excellent people skills and try to build a good relationship with my students so that they enjoy their lessons.

About Manuel:
I am French Student from the French National School in Aeronautics and Space - Highly selective french engineering school, would be equivalent to a First Class Honors Degree in Maths and Physics. I am at the moment doing a Master of Science in space engineering in Glasgow University.

French is my first language, but my English is quite good (106/120 Toefl) and should not be a problem.

I would be pleased to meet you to talk more about my Teaching Experience and my approack to Tutoring.

Teaching Experience:

I have been giving private tuitions for four years in France, A' Level and University level. I also worked as oral examiner in Math and Physics for preparation classes (equivalent to the Bsc. in Maths and Physics) in France.

Tutoring Approach:

Whether you are a "desperate" student, or willing to have top A'Levels, the approach will be totally different. I give first priority to identify reasonable objectives, and work hard with the student to meet them. If your results in Maths and Physics are very low, then we will first secure all the basis and the methods to make sure that you pass you exam. If you are already an average student, but willing to be more prepared to higher education, we will work on more complicated exercises that will allow you to master your subjects.

About "homeworks", I would never make them for you, but would be really pleased to give you a detailed and personal correction of them.

I find group teaching also very efficient, as provided that all the students are really motivated and about the same level.

Two hours sessions is strongly recommended.
