About Jane:
I am a qualified Modern Languages teacher and languages have always played a big part in my life. They have given me the opportunity to travel to, live and work in many different countries. Being able to speak another language is a valuable and rewarding skill and I enjoy encouraging and teaching others to do so.

Teaching Experience:

I spent 5 years living in Italy working as a language teacher, translator and then Director of Studies of an international language school in Milan, as well as one year teaching English in both Spain and France.

My work abroad was varied and ranged from teaching primary aged children to language for Business Purposes in multinational companies to adult groups and private individuals wishing to learn for personal satisfaction.

In England I have worked as a Modern Foreign Language teacher in both secondary and primary schools, given private lessons to adults and taught English as a Foreign Language at universities and junior summer schools.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring depends very much on the needs of the student, so the content of a primary school lesson will be very different from that of an adult's lesson. Therefore in the first session I assess competence and needs, and base my tuition on these. I have been learning languages myself for 20 years and in a variety of different settings, and can appreciate and anticipate learners' difficulties. I am encouraging and approachable but also require effort and application from my students. Language learning does not happen by itself!

About Iain:
I am specifically a brass teacher, and am a recent graduate of Salford University, having gained a BA(Hons) Degree in Music, and am carrying on to pursue an MA in Music(Performance). I have been perfecting my craft on my instrument (Trumpet) for nearly a decade and a half, and have many years experience as a performer-in recent years having performed at the highest level in brass bands and pursuing a growing career in Jazz and Big Bands. In the last few years I have taught a number of private students-most of them from a university level of playing-so I do specialise to some degree in teaching advanced students. My playing experience to date consists of: I am Principal cornet of the world famous YBS Band, and am increasingly in demand as solo instrumentalist. Principal cornet of the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland - have recently toured Japan in this capacity (Altthough due to age I am now no longer elligable to fill this role).
Ex Principal cornet of Sellers International and Carlton Main Bands as well as Unison Kinneil and Bo'ness bands (Scotland), and a former member of the Scottish Co-op Brass Band (CWS Glasgow).

Teaching Experience:

I Have formerly tutored for the Dobcross Youth band and Gateshead Music services on training days, and I also have a great deal of experience as a private brass teacher.

Tutoring Approach:

As already mentioned, I do tend to specialise in catering to advanced students, but regardless of standard or age, my sole aim is to help the student achieve their full potential, and get the most out of their playing. my method of teaching is very methodical and logical-with the aim being that the student will learn proper well-thought out practise and performance-preperation techniques. Ultimately though, my opinion is that the most important thing one should get out of making music is to enjoy it.

About Ray:
I have been teaching maths for about 25 years. I taught wealthy and high achieving private students in London for much of that time, where I was always very busy and it was quite usual to be teaching "A" levels or International Baccaleureate to the sons and daughters of extremely wealthy foreign nationals, business people, and politicians.

Then I moved to Essex...

Owing to my London teaching over many years, it is quite possible that, in terms of hours worked, I am the most experienced private tutor of GCSE and "A" level maths in the UK.

Teaching Experience:

Please see the above. "A" level maths and statistics, GCSE, and some degree level are all covered. I can also help with statistics coursework.

Tutoring Approach:

I always try to give the student confidence. Although I will tell them frankly whether or not I think they are going to pass, or get the grade they require. It is surprising, however, how wrong you can be sometimes.

About Stephen:
I am currently an English teacher in the East End of Glasgow at Lochend High School where I successfully oversee the learning of a wide variety of young people from S1 to S6.
At Bannerman High School, I achieved straight A's across six Highers and three Advanced Highers. In 2006, I graduated from Glasgow University with a MA Joint Honours History and English Literature (first class). Through this education, I have developed excellent study skills and effective communication techniques.
As a volunteer youth worker, I am friendly, approachable and go out of my way to be as helpful as possible. I've worked with young people from many different backgrounds, whether attending Madras College in St Andrews or hanging out in Bargeddie, just outside Glasgow.
I really enjoy reading, discussing ideas and writing short pieces, particularly poetry.

Teaching Experience:

In Lochend, I have created numerous, pupil-centred resources to make learning more interesting and informative. I've also set and assessed Standard Grade and National Qualification test papers.
At Jordanhill teacher training college, I worked for ten weeks in Taylor High and another eight weeks in Lochend. I studied the most highly-regarded education practices and was tutored by an official SQA marker.
I also worked with an organisation called GOALS, which worked across schools in the West of Scotland to promote University and help prepare pupils for the transition to life as students.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe tutors must work together closely with the tutee to identify their individual targets, plan a pathway to reach their goals and tackle the challenges on route. This involves nurturing the creative flair and particular style of the tutee, within the rules of standard English writing. Readers must be trained to better explore, analyse and evaluate the texts to move understanding beyond the superficial.
Tutors should also provide high-quality feedback on tutee's work, which praises the strengths and sets-out clear strategies for further improvement. Finally, a tutee needs a comfortable atmosphere for learning and encouragement to keep going!

About Deborah:
I am a qualified secondary Modern Languages teacher, but also have experience of teaching younger pupils too. Naturally, I am very enthusiastic about the benefits of learning a language and I enjoy motivating my students, using a variety of strategies in order to engage people with different learning styles.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught Modern Languages in mainstream secondary schools for 3 years and have also taught English as a Foreign Language to French and Italian children of primary age, both in classes and privately, in their respective countries. I currently tutor a Year 11 pupil privately for GCSE French.

On a one to one basis or in small groups, people receive the individual attention that they would not get in a large class and therefore progress more quickly. Lessons are planned to suit the individual's ability to help them achieve their personal goals. It is important that students feel that they are learning and are enjoying the sessions.

I have been doing private tutoring for ten years, most have been for school entrance exams, GCSEs and A levels.

Tutoring Approach:

Depending on the reason for the tutoring I work with the student for an hour and then set them some tasks to do for the next visit, they can ring me if they get stuck. I will go through past papers with them and have a look through ideal answers with them. I play maths games with the younger ones and explore different ways of remembering spelling rules. Sometimes students are struggling with homework so I cover this too.

About Louise:
I love reading and learning new things everyday. Life is fun and full of opportunities, and I feel it is my job to help people discover this. Learning should be fun and rewarding, not full of fear of failing and struggles, so I have an informal approach and students find me down to earth.

Teaching Experience:

I have coached and trained for many years in a corporate environment, dealing with many different people and their different styles of learning.I have learnt to be adaptable and flexible with students to help them get the maximum out of our time together. I have tutored children who have attention problems, and adults who need to brush up on basic skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer an informal style, designed to get the best from my students. I will adapt material depending on your ability and the way in which you digest information. I like to make learning fun and I try to link information learnt to normal everyday situations to help students remember things. I work most effectively with people who struggle with the normal strict style of teaching adopted by most schools, and those who need help to concentrate.

About David:
I am 23 years old
I have a had lots of experience with people from all backgrounds and walks of life through the course of my employment and education.
I am Freindly, Patient and have excellent communication skills.

Teaching Experience:

In the past I have tutored my sister to pass her GCSE Biology Exams and coursework.
I also tutored a couple of A-Level Students in my 1st and second years at university.
In addition, at university it was a requirement for final year students to assist 1st and 2nd Year students in their coursework.

Tutoring Approach:

My general approach to tutoring is as follows:
1. Firstly assess the weak points any particular tutee may have usually by ways of a practice exam.
2. After having analysed where the weak points are, to establish with the tutee what they want to achieve and in what timescale.
3. Then a timetable will be drawn up with what areas are to be covered, establishing aims and goals that can be achieved.
4. Ongoing assessment, again typically past exam papers/questions, are performed to allow the tutee to realise where they have improved and what areas may require additional attention.

About Marina:
I am 37 years old. I like being a teacher and I get true enjoyment from sharing my knowledge and skills with new learners, making them realize how easy learning can be and how much actually they do know already. I like helping young people enjoy learning and making learning easy for them. I am patient and adaptable and easy to talk to. I always discuss the needs of my new pupils very carefully and aim to build their confidence in the subject. As an Examiner with a well-known Board, I am able to help my students to maximise their potential using targeted revision and exam techniques.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a teacher for 12 years. I have always wanted to be a teacher. I have worked in several schools now, gaining experience from working with a variety of learners of various ages and learning styles. I have worked within the requirements of more than one examing board, therefore I am quite familiar with all exam formats. I have been a tutor also for 10 years with very good results. Students do like me within first session, gaining confidence and self reassurance that they are capable of a lot already. Only some issues need re-addressing, building on their prior knowledge.

Tutoring Approach:

Within the first session, I discover the individual needs of my learners, their strengths and weaknesses. Then I devise a plan to address the whole programme of study within the number of weeks available, so no topic is ignored. I work simultaneously on exam requirements, but also on skill development, skills that the student can benefit from, outside the boundaries of a specific exam format. Students find themselves forgetting the time, often engrossed in their work, mentally challenged and stimulated. I set short homework at times, so that students can practise independently on those skills they develop with me, being reassured that they can transfer those skills further. I do provide learning materials which I do personalize for each student.

I started by teaching computer engineers and then after my degree I did the PGCE in ICT with two teaching practices and am still looking for my first NQT role. I am a supply teacher for local schools so I have a wide range of experience and get on well with people of all backgrounds and ages. I have some experience from being a personal tutor.

About Elizabeth:
I am a gap year student who is going to York University in 2008 to study history and politics.
I can offer private tuition in history, politics, geography and law, in preparation for GCSE, AS and A level exams. I am an organised, committed, reliable and enthusiastic individual who enjoys working with children and young adults, helping them to develop their understanding and interest in a variety of subjects.

Teaching Experience:

For several years whilst I was at school I was an enthusiastic volunteer for Fun Fizzical, a movement and dance group organized by Lewisham council for disabled children and their siblings. As a volunteer, part of my responsibility was to teach and help children to develop their basic language and numeracy skills, whilst ensuring that a stimulating and exciting environment was created for them. I found it a very rewarding and humbling experience, which taught me valuable skills such as patience, sensitivity and commitment, whilst developing my skills in teamwork and communication.

In addition to this during my work experience, where I worked at the Tower of London and Hampton Court, I conducted independent historical research, which I then used to plan educational sessions, geared to school children, of various ages and abilities. It was necessary to ensure that the material collected was not only historically accurate but also easy to understand and enjoyable to learn about, helping the children to develop an interest in different periods of history.

Tutoring Approach:

Whilst tutoring I would pay particular attention to the needs of each student, and tailor their study courses to best meet their needs and wishes. My approach to tutoring emphasises clarity, flexibility, and an enthusiasm for learning, within an informal and relaxed yet structured and interactive environment. I would encourage students to think imaginatively and challenge themselves academically, encouraging debate and broadening their horizons. This would not only help to improve a child's examination technique but also their academic development.
