About Sabrina:
I was born in Nanjing, China, and am currently living in Leamington Spa. As a freelance translator/interpreter, I specialize in arts translation, and a selection of my portfolio is as follows:

In-house translator for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai

Interpreter for the first Fringe Festival in Shanghai

Translator for H+ Design Agency, ShanghART Gallery, Yibo Gallery and Shanghai International Art Festival

Translator for Vogue magazine (mainland China) dummy issues

English language editor at Vision magazine

I also worked as a freelance writer for Rolling Stone China (Chinese) and City Weekend Shanghai (English) between 2006 and 2007.

Teaching Experience:

I have been giving one-on-one Chinese lessons for over two years.

Tutoring Approach:

Learning Chinese is not just about imitating the seemingly impossible sounds and tones. Once you learn to read the characters, you will find a whole new world opens up for you. By teaching basic radicals and characters along with pinyin, I will help you get beyond the first step of "ni hao" and "xie xie".

The textbook I use is "Learn Chinese with Me", a Chinese textbook written by Chinese teachers and published only in China. For more advanced learners, I also provide tailor-made lessons that suits your level. Whether you are looking for Chinese-only conversations or specialized writing classes, all you need to do is send me an email with your requirements.

As a former radio DJ at Shanghai East Radio, I speak perfect standard Mandarin, so you don't have to worry that you will learn a language with an accent.

About Jodi:
I am a young Biomolecular Research Scientist working for a Biotechnology company.

So how did I get here? Well, I studied Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry at A-level in order to qualify for the Biochemistry and Genetics Honours Degree at Nottingham University.

Still enthused and determined I started a PhD, researching DNA repair proteins. This has led me to a job in the industrial sector as a research scientist.

However, I think at this point I must emphasis my interest in science as a whole and not just the small area that my work focuses on.

More importantly though, as a person I am friendly and approachable and always willing to help. I, myself, had some tutoring at school when I needed a nudge in the right direction. Consequently, I would enjoy passing on my knowledge and experiences of my subject, exam techniques and academic life to those who require it as those tutors did for me.

Teaching Experience:

During my PhD at the University of St Andrews I was heavily involved in demonstrating for the undergraduates (first year to final year students) in their laboratory practicals. This involved taking charge of a small group of students; helping them with any technical difficulties; or explaining and clarifying anything they did not understand. I was also responsible for ensuring that any set work was handed in and marked on time.

In addition to demonstrating, I tutored a first year undergraduate group. This involved fortnightly meetings and project updates. I had to supervise their Biology project, instigate group discussions and ensure they had everything in place for their final presentation.

I have also designed and implemented a work experience course targeted at school children (or anyone without the relevant background) visiting a research laboratory. I wrote and provided relevant handouts, I was always available to supervise the any practical work and always approachable for any questions.

My teaching experience extends to the classroom; I spent three weeks at a comprehensive school as a teaching assistant. I involved myself in the science lessons of all year groups helping the students where I could.

Tutoring Approach:

I take my role as a tutor very seriously since I know how important that extra help is for gaining a clear understanding of the subject, but also for building up self esteem and developing the confidence to apply what has been learnt. I feel that it is important to be able to adapt to the student and be able to explain things in numerous ways to ensure the point is understood.

Being able to explain something to others is a sign of understanding and understanding is the key to remembering. This is the main thing I have learnt during my education, I have been able to apply it throughout and it would be a lesson that I would pass on to others.

I am willing to spend time helping students in the hope that they may share in my enthusiasm for the subject.

About Ambreen:
PERSONAL STATEMENT

It is pertinent to tell that by inheritance I am a born teacher i.e. in undivided India my great grand mother was the teacher, my grand father was the teacher. My father remained associated with teaching especially the academic and educational administration.

My journey of learning started from the very first day when I stepped into this world. My career started as an 'O' level teacher of English in the city school. I recognised my hidden talents of a teacher as well as a learner. I learnt to be more punctual and systematic under the rules of discipline of the city school.

Being a teacher I attained acceptability and respect from my students. During my stay in the school I learnt and realized that " a teacher is a good counsellor to". It was the nice experience to learn and practice in formal counselling to discuss their personal and academic concern. I also laid my efforts to build co-curricular activities which is an effective constituent of healthy learning. I was the head of English literary association and worked whole heartedly to improve the conversational and language skills of the student. For this I organized debate competitions, essay writing, drama (script & performance), poetry writing and elocution.

Besides teaching in the City School in Pakistan as a full time teacher I was also engaged in part time English Language Teaching in the Brilliant Tuition Centre in Pakistan.

I left my school on 17th of March as I got the opportunity to serve as teacher and further enhance my skills and gaining experience in UK, as I got a HSMP ( Highly Skilled Migrant Programme ) to UK.

I am looking forward to teach Secondary Level. Whatever I have gained in my three years I want to established and in the same manner learn and implement the teaching learning environment according to the desired needs.

About Nicholas:
I have been teaching for the last four years both inside and outside the school environment. I have a strong understanding of academia having only recently finished my studies. I have been tutoring and teaching throughout this time and have been successful within a number of disciplines. English, Drama and performance are where the majority of my experience lies but I have also taught Maths and Science up to GCSE level.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring for a year now as well as running a successful Drama Group. Whilst studying at Central I have helped two other students with their Drama School auditions as well as conducting 2 Drama workshops in Schools. These were tailored to the curriculum and were well received.

I have also work as a learning assistant in a large secondary school where I was responsible for monitoring the learning objectives of several pupils. I devised teaching strategies to aid the pupils both inside and outside the classroom. This gave me a good understanding of the curriculum at Key stage 3-5.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in developing a relationship with pupils in order to teach in a one-on-one environment. Pupils learn in different ways and have a diverse range of strengths and weaknesses ; I believe it is the task of a good tutor to understand these and develop this into an effective teaching environment. Furthermore, I find my age (I'm 24) a useful tool in relating to the students which undoubtedly yields better results.

About Alex:
I am 37 years old and work as a freelance researcher. I provide online academic support to students writing essay assignments and dissertations. I thus write model essays and dissertations for A Level students, undergraduate students and post graduate students. Most of my writing work is in the area of law, religious studies, politics and english literature.

Teaching Experience:

I started teaching in 1990 as a post A level volunteer in Ghana. I did this for a year and did further teaching after graduating from the university as a qualified graduate teacher - 1997 to 1999. During this period I also did some home teaching. I started online tutoring in 2006 and lecturing in 2007. I still do online tutoring and lecturing.

Tutoring Approach:

I have an interactive approach to tutoring. I do not treat students as tabula rasas who need all the input from the tutor. Tutoring must be participatory enough to afford students to show what they know and by so doing build confidence in their intellectual abilities. Using a participatory and interactive approach includes asking students a lot of questions and allowing them to think and respond appropriately before adding to their knowledge when it is required. Giving students exercises also enables students to retain what the learn.

I am now re-establishing myself as a tutor, as teaching has always been at the root of all my professional activities, whether as a classroom teacher, private tutor or support teacher.

Teaching Experience:

I have had teaching experience in primary schools in London and Kent. Teaching experience with excluded pupils with behavioural problems and developing programmes to integrate them back into school. I have also worked with Traveller Eduation Support Services in Kent. This involved working with children and their families on a one to one basis and then supporting them into mainstream school.
In France I taught English to groups of French children and taught ceramics to groups of children and adults.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that every student should have the opportunity to succeed and one to one teaching allows the tutor to develop appropriate individualised programmes of work to bring about success. The importance of self confidence and self esteem in the student cannot be under estimated and much of my teaching experience has involved recognising how these elements may affect learning.
A combination of knowledge of the student, the subject to be taught and external pressures, enable me to develop a learning programme tailored to the needs of each student.

About James:
I am a professional actor and have trained fully for three years at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored privately and in schools on visiting workshops specialising in Shakespeare. I have worked at RADA and have led workshops in Stanislavski, voice and audition technique. I have also been involved with the RADA auditioning process for two years now.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach tends towards treating each tutee as though they were a professional, no matter what level they might be. My background is vocational- I see a preparation for a life in the theatre as a continual learning process that isn't academic. If you are thinking about applying to drama school then I would be the right person to contact- equally if you have to give a speech, are having to perform a recitation or in any way find yourself in a quandry about a public speaking situation then I could help you.

About Raul:
I have been teaching private classes for more than five years. Since my career is electronic and electrical engineering I have mainly focused my classes on science topics. However I have taught language classes as well, for example English as a foreign language. I really enjoy teaching and I think that this fact is reflected in my students satisfaction. I consider that I have good communications skills and an outgoing personality.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught private classes since I was eighteen years old. Maths, phisycs chemistry are the main courses that I have taught. However, other subjects such as English, Social Science, History have come across during my experience as a tutor. Satisfaction among my former students is total.

Tutoring Approach:

I ike to know everything about my student in my first meeting and afterwards design a working plan in order to reinforce the weakest points of my tutee. This plan usually includes student homework, further study in the darkest points covered in his/her daily classes and further materials exercises. A relaxed environment combined with an efficient use of the time are my basic principles while teaching.

About Tracey:
I have been privately tutoring for over 15 years in NW Kent & SE London and have taught in excess of 300 students in that time. My degree is in Chemistry and Biology and along with my many years tuition experience I am able to deliver personal tuition in a straightforward, and relaxed way.

Teaching Experience:

I work as a Maths instructor as well as a private tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

After 15 years I still enjoy the amazing moment when a student tells me with huge relief that they get it. That is when I know the results of our hard work are paying off. Improving a student's academic performance first begins with changing their mindset. Somewhere through their academic career they were given the wrong message about their learning ability and so are still operating in a way, which leads to ultimately uncomfortable results.

My job is to diagnose the problem and design the plan to set about remedying it, which will come in many different forms. When a student begins to trust and believe in me as a team we start to see significant improvements. The amount of which depends on how much the individual student is prepared to commit to consistent study. No subject is impossible to learn. I believe that by teaching with simplistic methods and a consistent study routine that is respected by the student they will obtain the optimum level of success - the sky is the limit!

About Fergal:
I am a postgraduate student with the School of English at Queen's University, Belfast, currently researching a thesis on discourse and consumption in modern British and Irish poetry. As a freelance writer I have had feature articles and reviews on a number of subjects on culture and the arts, published both locally and nationally.

Teaching Experience:

I have previously tutored English students at both GCSE and A-level. I have also worked for Queen's School of English promoting literature study to both secondary level and undergraduate students from around the U.K. and Ireland.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a great enthusiasm for literature and believe quite passionately in it's cultural significance. As such I think it's important to make texts at all times relevant and accessible to the student. No two students and therefore, no two readings will ever be the same, and I approach texts from as varied a range of perspectives as possible in order to arm the tutee with the information, vocabulary and means not just to answer, but also to ask questions fluently and with confidence. In this way I hope to make to provide a relaxed and hopefully enjoyable environment in which the student is encouraged to think critically and creatively about the text as well as their own work.
