Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring privately now for 13 years and have seen my students come to grow in confidence, in understanding and in knowledge of their chosen topics. I saw a girl who I tutored for 7 months go from getting an 'Unclassified grade' in her Biology AS Level to a B in her A2. I have never seen a student of mine's grades stay the same post-tutoring and I am very proud of that.

Tutoring Approach:

I approach tutoring different ways depending on who the student is. I ask them questions about themselves, hobbies, favourite subjects etc; and then using that to better understand how they learn, I talk to them about their private learning and revision and the method of approach to that and to exams. And then I teach them using the method appropriate to their style of learning. I also set plenty of work and get them to do past papers which I send to them in the first week. I then take these away and mark them in my own time and return with a deeper view of where they are going wrong after they have been taught. I do 2hr concentrated sessions either weekly or fornightly and have seen great results not only in grades but also in enthusiasm for learning. I am also on hand to discuss career and university options too, which helps ease the daunting choices the students have to make.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that Tutoring is first about personal connection. Any learning can only be achieved given a certain level of trust, which must be established in order to create a solid platform from which further learning can then flourish. Younger students are most open to absorbing information and should have the chance to take academic information and guidance from a range of people. This enhances the educational experiences and broadens the horizons of a student.

Having myself struggled with poor teachers, or unwieldy subject matter, I know that, with the right teachers, such areas can come alive. More clinical approaches to tutoring further separate students from the learning process. Having experienced one-to-one tuition myself, I have seen the many positives and potential pitfalls the system can bring. These experiences galvanize me and help me in my own tutoring. I relish taking what I have learnt, and the exciting methods by which I have learnt it, and passing that on to other students.

Regardless of the level taught, it is impossible to make real progress unless the student first has engagement and interest in the subject. I see my task as tutor as a process of invigorating the material for those studying.

Teaching Experience:

I was a teaching assistant at Strathclyde University for 4 years. In that time, I lectured Mathematics to first and second year University students, organised and supervised tutorial sessions, set and marked assignments/exams and tutored students on a one-to-one basis. I have also tutored my friend's kids who were home schooled and marked work which their parents didn't have the knowledge to mark.

Tutoring Approach:

I find that the most effective way of mastering concepts/tricks is the hands-on approach. I am a teacher with over thirty years' classroom experience in both Primary and Secondary schools. I have taught in UK state schools as well as overseas.

Throughout my years in schools both home and abroad I have tutored Primary, Secondary and Adult students as a vocation as well as to supplement my income.

Teaching Experience:

My experience includes 12 years teaching English and History to GCSE and A level in the UK secondary system and eight years teaching the same subjects to the same levels in international schools in Italy, Egypt and Kenya.

During this time I have always had a number of students on my books for home tuition to provide extra help in Primary, Secondary and University level subjects.

My English GCSE students last year all achieved A-C grades and my A level History student achieved an A (predicted C after Year 12) and is now at university. In previous years, my A level History students have never achieved less than a C and in 2014, I had a student who reached A* and is now studying the subject at Exeter University.

Tutoring Approach:

In my long experience of tutoring I have seen the benefits in aptitude and confidence that pupils can gain from one-to-one tuition. In the unique one-to-one situation the teacher can inspire pupils to begin at last to see the relevance of subjects they find difficult to grasp in a high-pressure environment like school.

Once the pupil sees the need to master the subject I take them on to the next stage where they can undertake tasks which build up their confidence. It is also a means for me to ascertain what the pupil's strengths are and to build on them.

The next stage is the slightly more painful one of identifying weaknesses and gauging the pupil's awareness of them and motivation to put them right. Once the student and I have agreed which areas need improvement we use lesson time to extend competence and skills by undertaking thinking and written assignments that allow the student to develop these.

Any homework set will advance and reinforce the skills the pupil has been encouraged to bring to the lesson.

Teaching Experience:

During the last two years I have been teaching different courses at the University of Leicester, acquiring a strong experience in dealing with students. In particular during this and last year I have been teaching Latin and Ancient Greek to first year students. In the last two months I also have been teaching Latin to the children of the Overdale Infant and Jr. School, as part of the Outreach Program of the School of Archaeology and Ancient History. Furthermore, since last year I have been working as one to one study mentor in The AccessAbility Centre of the University where I support students with learning disabilities. Finally, when I was still in Italy I have been giving private lessons of Latin, Ancient Greek and Italian literature to high school and university students for three years.

Tutoring Approach:

I will have a different approach according to the language I will be teaching. For Italian, I will use a communicative approach. This means that I will deliver just a minimum of grammar and I will use the target language as much as possible so that the student will learn the grammar implicitly. On the other side, since Latin and Ancient Greek are extinct languages I will use a more traditional approach. Nevertheless, also in this case I will try to alternate grammar with literature in order to help the student to get a broader perception of the ancient world.

I am a native Spanish speaker from Colombia. I have also lived in Barcelona (Spain) for 23 years. I completed a degree in Digital Marketing and Business Management at the University of Medellin, Colombia. I achieved a First.
I moved to England in February, 2010 as I really wanted to improve my English.

I am friendly and hardworking. My personal interests are: salsa, yoga, sports, travelling, nature, meeting new people and listening to music.

Teaching Experience:

In Spain I worked as a private tutor for 12 years. I am familiar with the syllabus at GCSE and A level.

I offer support in all relevant skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. I can support students in improving their intonation and pronunciation in order to reach high standards of accuracy. Alternatively, I can work on improving your knowledge and application of Spanish, as I offer advice on how to use key words and structures (e.g. verb tenses, adverbs, etc.).

Tutoring Approach:

I use a range of resources to support students (worksheets, videos, CDs) together with a variety of methods (from traditional writing and reading exercises to games and role plays). I can adapt my teaching to suit your learning style and priorities (e.g. improving writing skills to prepare coursework).

Highly experienced tutor, currently completing my PhD in chemistry at Imperial College London.

With an enthusiastic approach to learning and a real passion for my subject I develop students into inquisitive, capable learners and consider mentoring students in a love of science to be an important goal.

I achieved the highest grade possible in all science and maths subjects during my school education and having completed my Masters in Chemistry at Oxford in 2011 I have also worked in various roles in industry and academia, allowing me to convey the real significance of science to the students who study with me.

Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

I have over three years experience, teaching over 100 students from secondary up to undergraduate level. I am a professionally trained undergraduate tutor and laboratory demonstrator, recently awarded an Associate Fellowship of the HEA in recognition of my contribution to undergraduate learning and my continuing development as an educational practitioner.

As a result of my teaching programme at Imperial College, I was awarded a Student Academic Choice Award - chosen by the students - for excellence in chemistry tutoring and communication.

Alongside my direct tutoring experience I have also taken part in the assessment and development of teaching material in chemistry and in the interview process at Imperial College, allowing me to offer targeted advice for students who wish to excel. Having attended both Oxford and Imperial College I can offer highly relevant admissions advice for university entrance interviews at Oxbridge and London-based institutions.

Working with students from across the world, I have experience of tutoring students whose first language is not English and am familiar with dealing with any issues that arise from this.

Tutoring Approach:

Having taught scientific subjects up to undergraduate level I have a keen understanding of the different learning styles of students and am able to adapt my teaching to suit the student.

Using various teaching methodologies to deepen understanding, wherever possible I like to employ additional techniques such as scientific software and interactive elements alongside theory in order to bring the subject to life.

Students who study with me are encouraged and supported in developing critical thinking skills, by analysing information more deeply, allowing them to become more efficient, resourceful learners in the future.

I have two main approaches for the students I teach:
For students struggling in a subject I aim to build up confidence in the area by ensuring lessons are relaxed and engaging rather than focused on specific topics. Once a student has become more comfortable in the subject, more targeted study can take place based on the syllabus.
For students who are competent in their subject but need additional support to excel, I take a more focused approach and work with the student on any weak points and advanced topics, supported by exam technique and practice questions.
In both cases I aim to broaden the knowledge of the student beyond specific subject guidelines, with the goal of developing a passion for their subject.
