Teaching Experience: I have been a volunteer leader within the Guide Association (now GirlGuiding UK) for the last 15 years and as such have a vast experience of teaching a variety of skills to young people aged 10-25. I spent some time in the IT industry where training of colleagues was a key requirement of my position and so have some experience of adult education as well. Tutoring Approach: After initial assessments to see what support is needed, I tailor classes to a student's particular needs and interests. There is, of course, a vast difference between a school student who requires additional support in preparation for an exam and an adult student who is pursuing a modern language out of personal interest. We would look at verbal and listening practise as well as written exercises. I have a particular interest in grammar and feel that it is very difficult to have a good grasp of a language without some grammar competency. However, this does not have to be taught in a boring way and I often use games and fun exercises as well as more formal methods. Primary pupils learn mostly through games, puzzles and songs. |

Having attended Hamble Community Sports College in Hamble, I sat my GCSE exams last summer, achieving 5A*s and 9A grades, the top of my year. My Mathematics and Statistics GCSE (taken a year early) were the highest the school had ever achieved, both gaining an A*. I am currently studying Mathematics - alongside Chemistry, Biology, Psychology and General Studies - at college, where I am predicted A* at A2, having already achieved 99% in my January Exam. |
Teaching Experience: During my GCSE preparation period, and during the exam time also, I tutored several students in my year and below for Mathematics and Statistics, alongside their current teaching at school. I have also, however, given tuition to other adults, most of whom were taking their Mathematics GCSE as an extra qualification in order to get a promotion at work. I would be very willing to do any type of Key Stage 3 or GCSE Mathematics or Statistics teaching for a person of any age. |
Tutoring Approach: Mathematics being a specific passion of mine, I encourage students to apply their own knowledge to the question, before adding any new information. By showing proof of how a calculation or question works, I believe that anyone can grasp a method if they are shown the reason behind its usage. I believe I can offer an alternative to the class driven method of teaching, and allow students to gain aptitude in spotting the need for a calculation just by reading the question, and hopefully then on to creating their own calculations and solutions! |

| Personal Description: I am a young, enthusiastic Mathematics graduate (1st Class Degree) offering tuition and exam preparation in Maths at GCSE level to supplement my income before I go travelling at the end of the year. I feel that I have an advantage over the majority of tutors as much of the course material is still fresh in my mind. Teaching Experience: While completing my A-levels I tutored 3 students through their Maths and Physics GCSEs with pleasing results. It was relatively informal but something I vowed to take up again in the future as I enjoyed it a great deal. Tutoring Approach: I found that adopting a flexible approach teaching according to students' individual needs by encouraging strengths and working on weaknesses proved a recipe for success. I've found that practice in exam techniques invariably helps to rapidly improving grades, and will provide plenty of examples and exercises if and when needed. I will study the current syllabus requirements and have found that past examiners reports are a very useful, and often overlooked, resource. I shall be available by e-mail to go through problems outside normal tutoring hours, of which no extra fees will be charged. |
