Personal Description:
I'm an educational professional with over 20 years of teaching experience. I love teaching and learning and very much enjoy working with students.

I'm an avid reader and whilst I enjoy contemporary fiction, I have a real love of the classics and return to them again and again for both solace and inspiration.

My spare time is taken up with dancing and DJ'ing which I do on a semi-professional basis, organising classes, workshops and social dance events in the UK and continental Europe.

Teaching Experience:

I spent nine years co-owning and running a private language school in which I taught English both one-to-one and in small groups. I then continued to teach English freelance for two years, in the UK and in Italy. From 2002 to 2009, I worked on continued professional development for GPs and Primary Care team members, organising and delivering educational programmes and workshops. I currently tutor students and am also training in a new methodology to deliver fast-track intensive literacy programmes in secondary schools.

Tutoring Approach:

My main concern is that your confidence and belief in your own ability increases, so that what seemed difficult becomes easy and what seemed impossible becomes achievable. I like to work at your pace, in your preferred style and to build on your existing strengths. Of course the outcome is important, but my aim is that the process of working together will provide you with skills which you will be able to apply to all your future studies.

Personal Description:
I am a Cambridge graduate with over 25 years experience of teaching IT/Computing at secondary level. I am now semi-retired (since 2009), but was secondary school Head of Department in Information Technology with a reputation for commitment and dedication which has seen several of my pupils achieve the very top results in the country. I am married and have three grown-up children.

Teaching Experience:

I have over 25 years experience teaching ICT/Computing very successfully at secondary level. I have had three pupils achieve "top five" status (ie top five individual pupils, not merely top 5%) in the country at GCSE level - two for ICT and one for BCS. A very large majority of my pupils at GCSE level - in ICT and Business Communication Systems - have achieved grade A or A* - this from pupils of mixed abilities. Similarly a very large majority of my pupils at A-level Computing have gained grade A or B. Of my A-level pupils who have gone on to study Computing and related subjects at university, many have gained first class honours and some have been awarded "best in year" and "best overall" prizes at UCL and Imperial College.

Tutoring Approach:

I have the ability to communicate effectively to pupils of all abilities. I make a point of ensuring that pupils always have the understanding they need, and will keep working at a problem, tackling it in different ways as necessary, until I know that they have grasped it. Having worked in the IT industry before coming to teaching I am a very capable programmer, and so am able to teach this skill from a background of experience which many teachers - at least when I first set out in teaching - did not have. I also have many years of experience of different exam systems, and have been responsible for choosing which examining board's specification to follow for GCSE and A-level, and for choosing teaching and computing resources for use in school. I have greatly enjoyed encouraging the less able pupils, as well as challenging the more able ones, to achieve more than they perhaps felt possible.

Personal Description:
I am a qualified doctor from Imperial College London (MBBS 2014) having recently obtained a first class bachelors of science in Management (Hons) from Imperial College Business School in 2012.

Earlier in my school career I achieved GCSE's of 6A*'s and 3A's. Thereafter during my A Levels I received 3A's and a B(further mathematics). I was offered to study Medicine at every medical school I applied to in 2008 (Imperial, UCL, King's and QMUL) as well as a place to study Maths at Warwick. Furthermore I was offered a scholarship recommendation by Imperial for entry into medicine. I have won an international maths competition with my school in 2008, as well as being recommended as an outstanding business talent by my school. I represented Imperial at the Universities Business Challenge reaching the semi final stage.

Teaching Experience:

Whilst at school and at university I have helped numerous students to enhance their exam results or application forms for University. Over the last few years I have tutored several students in the subjects that I am currently offering.

I am currently a private tutor under Kensington and Chelsea tutors. Additionally I also have the experience of freelance private tutoring, most recently GCSE Physics, Maths and Chemistry as well as A Level Maths (Academic year 2012/13). I predominantly find myself tutoring hard working students who require further confidence to succeed in challenging subjects. My philosophy is to offer a semi-structured approach to questions, where I push the student in the right direction, but ultimately they work out the answers themselves. This enhances their confidence and leaves them more independent come exam time. Notably five students that I've mentored have successfully applied to Imperial Medicine, including my younger brother.

Other than private tutoring I have a diverse set of teaching skills through various roles. One example is an annual entry to medicine course, PotMed, whereby I coached students through their personal statements as well as through the daunting interview process. I've also received formal peer tutor training from the Imperial College faculty to facilitate teaching other Medical students.

Last year I worked closely with secondary school students as a maths teacher for three weeks at a school in London under the SAS teaching scheme. I had the satisfaction of working one on one with students of varying abilities and varying interests.

Note: I am happy to conduct group tutoring sessions at a lower than quoted rate. Also all of my one-to-one sessions are in two hour blocks. Unfortunately I cannot travel to the tutee for one hour only.

Tutoring Approach:

I remain a humble and grounded individual and believe principles like these will doubtlessly help me as a tutor. I am always happy to help wherever I can. Importantly I place a great emphasis on the understanding of concepts. My role is not to spoon feed information but to enhance the knowledge of the pupil overall.

The nature of education today is highly competitive and a stressful environment for many children and parents alike. My overall philosophy is to simplify the process and put students at ease. By making difficult concepts look easy, tough subjects will be simpler to tackle and the motivation to pursue a promising career will come naturally.

Personal Description:
I am a friendly and approachable tutor based in the Sandhurst area. I am able to offer tuition in my home. My normal working hours are Monday-Friday, 3pm-8:30pm amd on Wednesdays from 9am-9pm. I aim to be as flexible as possible, so if you would like to have tuition at a time that falls outside of these hours then please contact me and I will try my best to see you then.

Teaching Experience:

I currently have a varied client base of 10 tutees aged 7-45. Several of these been with me since September 2011; I will happily provide references to support this. I first began tutoring in August 2010 & I have taught English Literature & Language both at Primary and Secondary school level since then. Additionally, I have worked for Let Me Play LTD where I taught English as a foreign language in their summer holiday camp held in License Victualler's School, Ascot. I worked for Let Me Play in August 2011 & then Aug-Sept this year after they asked if I could work for them once more. I have taught a wide range of children with varying needs. I worked at Cove School as a Learning Support Assistant, where I worked closely with children with learning difficulties such as dyslexia. Moreover, I spent a year at Robert May's School working as an Unqualified Teacher. Throughout this role I worked with a large number of students, not just providing support for those who were less able or under confident but also helping GCSE student turn A s into A*s. I am currently working 4 days a week as a Teaching Assistant at Garth Hill College.

Tutoring Approach:

My main aim as a tutor is to improve students' English skills however; my secondary aim is to ensure that they enjoy the process. There are always going to be bits which are less exciting, nevertheless I strive for a smile every lesson.
On first meeting a new tutee I ask them a few questions about their experience of English as a subject, discussing specifically what they enjoy and what they don't, as this can often provide me with valuable insight as to how to deliver my lessons in a way they will respond to. I ask them to take part in a series of activities aimed to test their reading and writing capabilities so that I can evaluate these for myself. But, I also find it very useful to take a look at some of the work that they have been doing in school, where this is possible. After this session, which should take 30-45 minutes, I discuss my findings with the parents and ask them in which key areas they would like to see their son or daughter improve. This is only a generic template of a first meeting as each one can be quite different depending on the student and the family.
As the tuition continues I will work directly with the student, working specifically on the areas which need most improvement. I also aim to tie in from time to time with what they are studying at school as this helps to cement the learning that takes place there. Furthermore, recapping on ideas that they have been recently studying can help to improve a student's confidence as they are ready equipped with some of the answers. From this point onwards contact with parents tends to take one of these 3 forms 1) A summary chat immediately after each session (around 5-10 minutes). 2) A longer catch up on a monthly basis, again immediately after a session. 3) Email / telephone contact. Again these are not strict rules just templates, generally parents have as much or as little involvement as they wish and conversations about tuition happen whenever they are required.

Personal Description:
I am now a undergraduate student studying in the University of Manchester. My major is Electrical and Electronic Engineering so I am fully capable of teaching maths and physics subject for A Levels and degrees below. Besides, I am from China and was also the champion for several international Chinese writing competitions. Therefore, I am also confident that I have the capacity to teach Mandarin.

Teaching Experience:

I used to give private tuition on Maths and Chinese when I was studying in Singapore from 2008 to 2011. I also once worked in a English tuition center in China named Pattison English during my summer and winter vacations.

Tutoring Approach:

1. The basis of maths and physics is all about understanding the concept. Hence what I will try my best to do is to make students have a better understanding of all relevant concepts in various ways.

2. Abundant exercises, I believe, will be very essential and necessary for students. Giving worked examples and exercises will be my another approach.

3. Chinese is my mother tongue. I studied in Singapore for 4 years under a scholarship programme and met numerous people in Singapore whose first language isn't mandarin and had difficulties in learning it. Therefore I know precisely what one needs when studying mandarin. I will use this experience to tackle most of the problems students came across.

Personal Description:
I am a current teacher who believes learning must, at all times, be relevant and fun. I always spend a lot of time planning my lessons to make sure that students learn as quickly as possible, whilst at the same time making sure that they become pro-active learners. My passion is English, and I aim to pass this passion on to all of my students through lessons that are filled with fun, engaging discussion and exciting tasks.

Although I do believe in fun and engaging lessons, I also am very aware of the need to work towards the Assessment Objectives that exam boards give, of which students are ultimately measured by in their examinations. My planning, therefore, always takes into account the mixture of fun and focus on assessment objectives that is needed for both enjoyment and success.

I have deliberately not pursued a career in management in schools because I find huge enjoyment in teaching students privately. Parents often contact me because, sadly, their child is not working at their potential at their school, for whatever reason that may be. To take a student who may not be reaching their potential and transform them into a confident and successful English student is the most rewarding thing that I believe I can possibly do in my career, which is why my focus is now increasingly leaning towards private tuition.

My particular areas of expertise are English students who are either preparing for their 11+ examinations, students who need booster sessions in Key Stage 3 and students who need help in passing their GCSE examinations.

Teaching Experience:

I have held the post of Head of English at a school in Staffordshire, and I have led a team of exceptional English teachers. Having held other management positions in other schools as well, with management focus on both key Stage 3 and 4, I have built up a wealth of experience and knowledge that I can now put to good use within the sphere of personal tuition.

I am also an experienced examiner, having marked for a leading exam body for five years now. This has helped me enormously to build up a very clear understanding of what exam boards require from students.

Last year's results saw a continuation of my fine record of exam success, where my class achieved 100% A-C in their GCSE examinations. My current year 11 class are predicted to have 5 A*'s, 10 A grades and fifteen B grades. This will be the finest set of English class results in the school's history.

I have built up tremendously successful working relationship with my clients, and parents who I currently work for, and worked for, have happily created testimonials for me which I would be able to provide for your perusal upon request.

Tutoring Approach:

My largest concern for my students is to make sure that their confidence is built up by becoming pro-active and independent learners. All too often tutors 'spoon-feed' their students, leading them to a false sense of security in their skills, which therefore leads to poor performance in examinations.

I also view myself as a 'English Coach', as I place a very big emphasis on ensuring that students have the right frame of mind when approaching studying English. Confidence, and belief in their own ideas, is so important for students to have, and all too often this lack of confidence is instrumental in why they are not performing as they should be.

Personal Description:
From my experience in the classroom I realise that many students benefit from much more individual help than school can provide. I enjoy being able to help students on a one-to-one basis as it is very rewarding being able to improve their achievement and confidence.I am very grateful to my students and their parents for the relationships we have struck up, many of which have continued through the years.

Teaching Experience:

I am an English teacher with over 20 years experience teaching to GCSE, A-level and Oxbridge entrance.I have taught in both the independent and state sectors, in a large comprehensive and a small independent school. I have also tutored in Oxford and London for students from 10 to 19.

Tutoring Approach:

One to one or small groups of 2 or 3.

I aim to develop confidence by supporting the students and understanding their needs as a priority. I then encourage them to explore and develop ideas, giving them support while they grow in this. The key is building an excellent relationship in which high expectations enable them to make progress while always supported.

Personal Description:

- You will save time by learning from the most effective language acquisition techniques.

- You may choose to take classes according to your needs.
- No obligation initial consultation.

My classes are for

- Adults, Business and Travel
- Children of Russian heritage or working towards a qualification

My lessons for children are based around
- developing your child's speech, reading and writing,
- improving his comprehension
- building her Russian vocabulary to the "educated" standard,
- learning about Russian culture and history
- working on language intereferance and language code switching.
In my teaching children I use proven methods and stragegies developed in American and German schools specifically for biligual children, as well as materials created by a very talented Olga Soboleva.

Teaching Experience:

Teaching adults and children both at prep school and privately.

Tutoring Approach:

As Stephen Krashen puts it, "Simply being a native speaker of a language does not in of itself qualify one as a teacher of that language. Conscious and extensive knowledge of grammar does not make one a language teacher either. Rather, the defining characteristic of a good teacher is someone who can make input comprehensible to a non-native speaker, regardless of his or her level of competence in the target language."

Your primary goal as a student is to learn a language. In that regard my primary job as a tutor is to guarantee the effectiveness of your learning process in relation to your needs and expectations.

How do I achieve that? First and most importantly by combining the right set of tools in my teaching repertoire:

- TPRS - Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling - is at the core of my methodology.

Traditionally there has been a prejudiced view that only certain people can 'do' languages. That only smart students can become proficient and that only the really smart can move on to advanced study. TPRS has demonstrated that the vast majority of students can achieve high levels of success at all levels of foreign language study, and that acquiring a second language isn't nearly as difficult as we teachers sometimes make it. TPRS is making particular headway in language classrooms across the US and considerable research has been done and published on its efficacy.

TPRS works because it is brain-friendly and multi-sensory methodology, fitting the needs of various learning styles. Students develop a real "ear for the language," learning to listen and respond to what sounds right.

- Teaching grammar in meaningful context from day one
The focus is first and foremost on the message, with realistic expectations (level-appropriate) for grammatical accuracy. My philosophy is that of John DeMado: "Linguistic accuracy is a destination, not a point of departure." My way of teaching grammar is based on usefulness, frequency of use and level appropriateness.

- Tremendous amount of Comprehensible Input.

This approach supports the language acquisition theory by Stephen Krashen, who says: "We acquire language in only one way, when we understand messages, that is when we obtain comprehensible input."

- Reading as a major component of learning process.

In his book, The Power of Reading: Insights into the Research, 2nd edition, (p. 37) Stephen Krashen states, "Studies showing that reading enhances literacy development lead to what should be an uncontroversial conclusion: Reading is good for you. The research, however, supports a stronger conclusion: Reading is the only way we become good readers, develop good writing style, an adequate vocabulary, advanced grammatical competence, and the only way we become good spellers."

- Teaching Russian to heritage speakers as a language arts/social science.

What students say:

"As a language teacher myself, I was very particular about the kind of Russian lessons I wanted: communicative, engaging, learning through interaction. I didn't want to get bogged down in grammar but instead to focus on useful vocabulary and phrases I could actually use in Moscow during my regular visits. Julia's lessons have fitted this brief perfectly. Even in our first lesson, I was using Russian to interact in a very simple way, which gave me a huge confidence boost. Julia got to know me well in the initial lesson and then tailored all our classes to my interests and daily activities, making the lessons really relevant and interesting. I initially explained to Julia that I could only do 20 minutes homework a day while commuting into work. She therefore provided vocabulary flashcards I could use on the train to maximise this time. The whole service is bespoke! Julia is a patient, encouraging and engaging teacher "
I would highly recommend her lessons." Sarah, Surbiton

"I took about 5 months of private lessons with Julia, in preparation for a long motorcycle trip around Northern and Central Asia. Although I had been learning a bit of Russian a few years back, I had forgotten everything. In 5 months I went from not speaking any Russian to be able to speak simple sentences, ask questions, explain situations, and feel confident that I can find my way round in any situation that may arise through the trip. Julia impressed me by her enthusiasm, by how much research, effort and preparation she put in, to design the lessons to fit my specific needs, for this journey. I definitely would recommend her to my friends and anyone who wants to learn Russian fast and efficiently." Maria, New Malden

Personal Description:
I have been a secondary school teacher for almost ten years, having experience of teaching from Year 7 all the way through A-Level. I am fully CRB checked (teachers require an enhanced CRB) and this can be provided upon request.

My results consistently outstrip national achievements both in Business Studies and ICT. I have been observed and graded at "Outstanding" by Ofsted on multiple occasions.

I have high standards and expect the same of my students, while maintaining a fun and relaxed approach to learning.

As a married father of a two year old boy who is already getting into IT(!) I know the importance of people having the necessary skills to succeed in the real world. More and more businesses now require "sound computer skills" before they'll even consider you for many posts.

I feel privileged to work in my current profession and am looking to extend that to others. I am a season ticket holder at Colchester United and, when I'm not teaching or being bored to death by the U's, I enjoy gardening, reading, travel and films.

Teaching Experience:

Six years at Holbrook Academy as Head of Faculty (2008 - date)
Three years at Philip Morant School teaching ICT & Business Studies (2005 - 2008)
Personal tutoring already completed

Tutoring Approach:

I have high expectations of my students and expect them to work to the best of their ability once they have the skills to succeed. I believe in independent learning and discovery but appreciate that my role as a facilitator and teacher is important to foster and develop theses skills in learners.

My students are used to developing their confidence through supervised tasks in such a way that they can tackle more complex problems later themselves. I will not do work for my students but I will work for my students so they can do it for themselves.
