Personal Description:
I am a friendly, qualified and experienced tutor who is available for work in the South East London area, or to give online lessons via Skype. I am a UK National and have worked in the UK, South America and Australia with students of many different nationalities, abilities and motivations. I am happy to teach at any age or level and I believe that learning English is valuable and also interesting.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching and tutoring English as a foreign language for over 6 years, both in the UK and abroad. I have experience working with a wide range of ages and levels, from children to business professionals. I am also able to help with preparation for Cambridge exams, IELTS or other examinations. I hold a CELTA qualification as well as a degree and an MA.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that the personal attention tutoring allows means that the student and teacher are able to negotiate the needs, aims and pace of classes. It is vital that the tutor is patience, friendly and has a sense of humour, as well as making the student work hard!

Personal Description:
I am a teacher of exceptional qualifications and experience, acquired in both Bulgaria and the UK. My 5-year MA degree (English Philology, comprising of English and American Studies, Applied Linguistics and Theory and Practice of Translation, Grade 2:1) has provided me with a thorough and solid theoretical basis in all aspects of English. It includes a teaching qualification up to Level 7/8, validated as a full UK QTS by the GTC for England. I have also completed a second degree (with 1st class Hon.) and obtained a Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults.

I am qualified and experienced to teach pupils from primary school to university (post-graduate) level as following:

- 11+ EXTRANCE EXAM FOR GRAMMAR AND INDEPENDENT SCHOOL EXAM PREPARATION - READING COMPREHENSION, MATHEMATICS, VERBAL REASONING AND NON-VERBAL REASONING, ESSAY COMPOSITION AND LITERARY TEXT ANALYSIS - FROM AGE 7+
- primary school: English, Maths, basic literacy and numeracy skills - KS1 and 2 Maths and English
- secondary school: English Language, English Literature, GCSE English Language and Literature, KS3 and 4
- A-level English Language and Literature - KS 5
- ESOL - all levels
- Citizenship - Life in the UK test
- IELTS - all levels
- English for Academic Purposes and proofreading FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS (academic writing skills, essays, reports, dissertations, projects) - undergraduates and post-graduates
- proofreading of academic assignments (essays, reports, dissertations, projects) - foundation, undergraduates and post-graduates
- help with writing academic assignments (essays, reports, dissertations, projects) - foundation, undergraduates and post-graduates
- Bulgarian language - all levels
- Russian language - basic level

Teaching Experience:

I have been employed as a PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHER (ENGLISH), 11+ GRAMMAR SCHOOL EXAMS TUTOR AND ASSESSOR, MATHS TUTOR (PRIMARY SCHOOL, KS 1 AND 2), EAP, Business, IELTS, ESOL and English Language and Literature teacher and have worked at universities, colleges and schools across two countries. My experience teaching at four universities, and supporting children in schools and adults has helped me become an exceptionally versatile teacher.

I HAVE A VERY FRIENDLY AND WELCOMING APPROACH, SHOWING UNDERSTANDING TO EACH STUDENT'S INDIVIDUAL NEEDS AND PREFERENCES AND TRY TO PERSONALISE LEARNING AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. STUDENTS WARM TO ME QUICKLY AND ESTABLISH A GOOD RAPPORT FOR EFFECTIVE COOPERATION.

I have a proven record of tutoring students for a successful performance at the 11+ ENTRANCE EXAMINATION AND SUCCESSFUL ADMISSION AT GRAMMAR OR INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS.

All my primary school tutees have achieved their individual targets (whether improving basic literacy skills, or advancing in their level of reading or writing). The same success has been achieved in Mathematics.

My GCSE and A-level English pupils achieved 100% A-grades in their exams (both English Language and Literature).

I have tutored successfully for the Citizenship/Life in the UK test. I have the latest information of the test changes (from 2014). All my tutees have passed the Life in the UK test.

With university students I have expertise teaching the following academic skills:

• structuring academic essays, implementing skills of cohesion and coherence and using the appropriate subject-related style
• paraphrasing and summarising texts and applying correct grammar and suitable register in writing
• using quotations and in-text citations and referencing them accordingly
• delivering a presentation on a subject-specific topic, using Microsoft Powerpoint for effect
• demonstrating understanding of key concepts and inferring the meaning of unfamiliar words from the context
• developing speaking and seminar skills, useful for active participation in discussions and debates in the classroom and outside
• interpreting numerical, statistical and financial data orally and in writing
• demonstrating a clear understanding of what constitutes plagiarism and how to use the Harvard Referencing system for citation and the production of Reference Lists

At the academic skills pre-sessional courses at the University of Birmingham in 2012-2016 I gained even deeper experience supporting individual students with writing within very constrained time-limits. I guided all to success at their final assessments. I have had very positive feedback and comments of appreciation.

I have taught in various set-ups - whole class, pair work, group work, or one-to-one sessions. I am deeply interested in each student's individual learning needs and progress and one of my major strengths is differentiation. I sometimes prepare material at 4 levels of differentiation for a single class or small group. I use supportive strategies to boost students' confidence, at the same time challenging learners to achieve beyond their own expectations. I approach intense 1-to-1 sessions with the appropriate dynamics.

I am prepared to go beyond my 'job description' duties to help students with 'special needs'. I am interested in their individual circumstances and take them into account, where appropriate. I prepare resources to address their personal needs and interests. I review their progress and involve them in self-assessment towards autonomy of learning. I am familiar with the 'Assessment for Learning' policy and competent with implementing it widely.

I have worked successfully with students with dyslexia. At secondary school, one of my 'high-ability' dyslexic students scored an 'A' grade at her English GCSE, while another participated in a poetry competition. I have had success teaching students with autism and Asperger's as well.

I invest all of myself in my teaching. I am a highly trusted professional and have an exceptional rapport with my students. I am often quoted as a preferred tutor, who 'has the best way of explaining things' and 'is very patient, friendly and cheerful'. All students of mine - regardless whether at school, college or university - progressed by at least one level (even at short-term courses). A student with a debilitating illness on the BME, predicted to fail the course, not only passed it under my guidance, but achieved grades higher than his required level. In my 15-year teaching career I have never failed a student. I have achieved outstanding results at OFSTED observations. My latest annual lesson observation at BMETC was graded 'OUTSTANDING' and so was my performance at NAVITAS earlier this year. Another observation at BCU was unofficially deemed as 'the best on the course'. I have been invited to share exceptional ideas at training events and have also participated in numerous training activities at schools, colleges and universities. I often opt to peer-observe colleagues, to learn from their teaching styles.

Some more examples from my practice: a class of illiterate Yemeni housewives at BMETC, 2011, achieved a 100% pass at their ESOL exams, while 'advanced' international students at the BME, 2012 achieved some of the highest grades on the course. I have been successful dealing with pupils with behavioural problems at Harborne Hill School. Many reported an increasingly positive attitude to learning. I am a creative teacher and try to interest and enthuse students, so that they enjoy learning and celebrate their achievements.

Tutoring Approach:

First I negotiate the times and modes of tutoring with the parents of my potential pupil and agree on fees.
Then I organise a free initial meeting with the pupil and their parents, where I try to establish raport with the pupil. It is important, especially for children, to 'get a feel' of the new tutor and see if they can feel comfortable with her.
Then I try to access as much information as possible from the parents and the child about their progress at school and their attitude to school. If possible, I wish to see samples of the child's school work, or hear anything teachers have said/written about their progress.
During the first lesson I conduct an informal assessment of the pupil's skills - give them a piece of text to read, or free writing or short composition, or a selection of Maths problems to solve. When I get a clear picture of where my pupil stands with a certain skill, I create a short-term plan of work with them. I normally bring materials with me and do not ask parents to buy additional materials. If the parent wishes me to follow a certain self- help book, I am happy to oblige.
I update parents regularly of their child's progress - I try to do it after every lesson. I normally leave homework, designed to consolidate the material covered in the lesson, or develop their skills further. I wish parents to be involved as much as possible with helping or monitoring the completion of the homework.
I try to show my pupils as much respect as possible and affirm them as individuals. I acknowledge their birthdays, Christmas, or other family celebrations.
The parents can terminate the service at any time, with only one week notice.
I OFFER LESSONS VIA SKYPE AS WELL.

Personal Description:
I am a fully qualified secondary school art teacher, and university lecturer in History of Art. I completed my PhD in History of Art at University College London (UCL) in 2013. I have published my research in a number of academic journals and edited book collections, and I am currently a Research Fellow at Cornell University Society for the Humanities, USA.

I'm currently based in the United States until December 12th 2016, and I'm presently offering Skype tutorials only until this time. As of December 12th - January 13th I will be based in Hulme, Manchester and can travel up to 20 miles from the city centre, or meet students at my central Manchester art studio. I'm available for Skype appointments at any time, taking into account the time difference.

Teaching Experience:

I am a fully trained secondary school teacher, specialising in Art & Design and Photography at KS3, KS4 & KS5. I have 10 years teaching experience, including working as a specialist Learning Support Teacher, and in Special Needs schools catering for children and young adults with a range of special educational needs, from moderate learning difficulties to profound and multiple disabilities.

I have particular expertise in studio practice (art and design), digital and darkroom photography (theory, history and practice), literacy, social and vocational skills, as well as History of Art, Anthropology and History of Medicine at undergraduate level.

I am also experienced in teaching at undergraduate level, having taught gallery-based first year History of Art courses, for University College London's History of Art Department, and on the History of Art degree programme at the University of Manchester.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a one-to-one, flexible approach to learning and teaching, which first establishes the needs and goals of the student, and then sets out clearly structured strategies for achieving these goals. These may be results-focused when preparing for exams, or aimed at developing a broader understanding of a subject area, depending upon the student's own priorities. I am happy to work with any course materials the student may provide, and I am familiar with all current GCSE and A Level syllabuses. I am able to guide both GCSE and A Level students through their studies, offering consistent, dedicated 1-2-1 tuition for the full term of the course. I can also provide practical tuition for students who are preparing their art portfolios for University submission, and can offer assistance with UCAS forms and references for students who undertake long-term A Level tuition with me.

Tutoring may take place at the student's home, or at my art studio in central Manchester, where I can provide a range of art materials and resources by prior arrangement, for more intensive practical art sessions. Please note that I can travel within 20 miles of central Manchester based on the fee structure quoted below, travelling further will incur a small additional fuel fee.

I have had recent successes with my private students, one of whom attended one-to-one sessions at my Manchester studio for 8 weeks and improved her predicted GCSE Art result of a B by two grades, achieving an A* in her final art exam. My most recent undergraduate students have also attained First class results in their undergraduate degrees. One student achieved a high score of 78 on her History of Art dissertation project with intensive tutorial support conducted via Skype; and another progressed from a fail during the first year of his Visual Communication degree, to a First class final result in his third year, following 2 years of regular commitment to one-to-one tutoring.

*Please note that due to the time-intensive nature of undergraduate level tutoring, I am only able to take on a maximum of three undergraduate tutees at any given time. Please see below for my current availability for tutoring at this level.*

I am currently tutoring ONE undergraduate student.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

GCSE Level:

A Level:

University Undergraduate Level:

"I wanted a tutor to give me help and advice on my undergraduate history of art dissertation. I needed reassurance that what I was writing was okay and some one to proof read and give me their opinion on my arguments. Gemma was brilliant, she gave me the confidence that I needed to keep going with my dissertation by reassuring me that I was on the right track. She discussed my ideas with me in detail, proof read all of my work and suggested and sourced articles that I might want to have a look at. I have recently graduated from Newcastle University with a First in History of Art and Media and I know that I owe Gemma a huge thank you for the support she gave me on the way to achieving this."

Personal Description:
My name is Annie and I am a nineteen year old student. I study French and Italian at University College London and am entering my second year. I have just received a high 2:1 in my end of year exams.

Teaching Experience:

As a language student I've done a lot of volunteering, mainly helping out in the younger years' language lessons at school doing oral and grammar work, but sometimes helping out my parents' friends' children in their preparation for GCSEs.

Tutoring Approach:

I'm very enthusiastic about foreign languages and have knowledge of French, Italian and some German. I strongly believe that the world is only as big as the languages you speak! I'm very flexible with when and where lessons take place, though weekday evenings and weekends work best for me. I live in a maisonette in Camden with a light and spacious dining area where it will be possible to have lessons.
I'm prepared to tutor from complete beginner with no previous knowledge up to GCSE level. If you are a student at primary or secondary school, I'm happy to do lessons that help with your school work or target any specific weaknesses you feel you have. Alternatively, I'm also happy to decide what we cover myself. I'll teach oral/conversational classes, vocabulary and grammar.

Personal Description:
I am passionate about helping young people to learn and develop themselves. I have over 10 years experience working with children in a variety of roles, ranging from Deputy Director of Youth Camps to private tutor for academic studies and violin.

I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for learning in order to nurture their curiosity. Although I am very organised and task-focused, my methods are based on making learning fun, positive and engaging, as this has shown to work best in my previous roles.

In my free time, I have a passion for music and I play first violin in an amateur orchestra based in London. I also love travelling, learning new languages and experiencing new cultures whenever possible.

As far as my aspirations, I am currently working on setting up an organisation aimed at helping young women get into the technology sector.

Teaching Experience:

I have extensive experience tutoring young people in France. Between 2007 and 2011 I worked with a number of students on a variety of subjects, ranging from year 5 to year 13. This ranged from general support for younger pupils and subject-focused tuition for A-Level students. I also currently give private French tuition to adults in London.

I worked with all of my students for at least one year, helping them to get a better grasp and understanding of the disciplines they were having difficulties with. I have always succeeded in my task of helping them to improve and reach a new level of achievement by setting challenging yet achievable targets. With one student, I helped her to discover the beauty of Spanish (a subject she had little interest in) and to get top marks for her A-level. Another I worked with across all disciplines and helped her to successfully pass her GCSE equivalents when she was predicted to perform poorly.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very passionate about tutoring and able to adapt to any challenges and find a solution that works for the individual student. I like to explore new ways of learning and find a way that helps the student to understand and appreciate concepts and ideas that they previously found complicated and to build on existing capacities.

I have worked both through agencies and directly with families and have received consistent praise for my work and dedication with my students. I am used to working with families with high expectations and understand the importance of a good communication with the parents as well as the student to keep them in the loop of the progress made and the steps implemented to reach the target set.

Personal Description:
My name is Josh, I'm nineteen years old and my A Levels are as follows:

Chemistry - A*
Physics - A
Maths - A
Further Maths (AS) - A

I'm currently studying mechanical engineering at the University Of Birmingham. I have been working as a private tutor for over a year now and I've greatly enjoyed working with every client I've taught.

Teaching Experience:

I first starting tutoring at my high school when I was asked to participate in a scheme to help students in lower years who were struggling with GCSE Maths. I have since worked for a company called Explore Learning where I taught Maths and English to students age 5 to 14 years old. I worked with Explore Learning for a year and appreciate the various teaching methods I was taught there. For the past year I have tutored privately and had overwhelmingly positive feedback from clients.

Tutoring Approach:

As I am younger than most tutors, I find that students tend to relate better to my style of tutoring. I can offer you a balance between crucial understanding of the subject and exam technique as these are both key in helping you to achieve your aspirations.

Personal Description:
Hi,

I am Amine, a third year student at the university of Sheffield. I study civil and structural engineering and I am an international student, from Morocco. I started studying in a French school from the 6th grade. In the future, I would like to be a professor at a university. This Job is an opportunity for me to gain experience in the field that interests me the most. I am sure that it could be a rewarding experience for me and for the students too, because I can guarantee you that I will do my best to help you.

Teaching Experience:

I used to teach my little sister and my cousins when they had some difficulties. However, I have never done it in a professional way. The last year I did not have a lot of free time, so I taught just one student french, and he was realy happy with the courses I gave him.

Tutoring Approach:

I would like to help the students with their homeworks and to prepare them to exams. Or in general if the student would just like to learn a new langage, it is fine.

Personal Description:
I am a mature, bubbly and reliable individual; I have a passion for learning and thrive in passing my knowledge onto others. I am currently completing my Biology MPhil (Master of Philosophy) degree at Newcastle University; I am also a keen musician and have previously worked as a Music Teacher. I possess experience of successfully tutoring pupils of all ages; I take a flexible approach to teaching by playing to pupils' strengths, improving their weaknesses and exploring the best, most enjoyable way of getting new and difficult material across.

Teaching Experience:

Past Experience:
~Biology Demonstrator (Newcastle University)
~Biology Tutor (Self-Employed)
~Junior Music Teacher (Peterhead Music and Rock School)

I have extensive experience of working in educational settings. I was employed as a Junior Music Teacher at Peterhead Music and Rock school. There I taught from the ages of 4 - 40 keyboard, piano and musical theory. I learnt to adopt a patient, confident and professional approach and to build an instant rapport with pupils of all ages. I adapted my teaching style for the needs of each pupil and individually planned all lessons within good time. I prepped many of my students for exams (The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, ABRSM, accredited), for example one student achieved a Distinction Grade 1 piano whilst another obtained a Merit for her Grade 5 theory. I carried this experience on to my role as a Biology Tutor where I followed the curriculum and successfully aided a pupil in improving their grade from a D to a B.

While completing my Masters degree I worked at Newcastle University as a School of Biology Demonstrator. Through the role of Demonstrator I have gained valuable experience of helping to run undergraduate laboratory practical classes alongside experienced technicians and academics. My main tasks were to supervise the students; I would ensure they adhered to safety protocols and promote their understanding of the practical by assisting with any queries they may have. I developed a good rapport with both staff and students by adopting a friendly, hard-working and patient approach.

Tutoring Approach:

As mentioned in sections above; I am a very patient and friendly individual. My approach to tutoring depends entirely on the student I am working with. I very much like to tailor sessions to every individuals' needs and abilities, ensuring that the learner dictates the pace we work at.
