Teaching Experience: I have experience teaching GCSE English Literature and Language - this includes newspaper analysis, creative writing, as well as textual analysis and essay writing. |
Tutoring Approach: My teaching is centred on very close and thorough textual analysis. My aim is for a pupil to know their set texts inside-out, back-to-front, upside-down and so on. Essay writing also features largely. I assess a pupil's grammatical and other needs from their written work - and usually some grammatical and spelling work becomes a small part of the lesson. (Though I do check as standard a pupil's grasp of apostrophes - I have yet to meet a 15 year-old who uses them correctly!) My ideal situation would be to have a nice stretch of time over which to really get to know my pupil and to respond to his or her individual needs; I believe progress comes from consistent hard work over a period of time. I certainly encourage pupils to read outside the syllabus - what they read is entirely dependent on their ability and of course personal interests. However in the absence of time, I am able to help a pupil prepare for imminent exams - sometimes simply revising texts and thinking about a different theme/essay question with a teacher is highly beneficial and gives a little guidance to the overwhelmed student. |

| Personal Description: I'm 22 and have just graduated from Bristol University with a degree in Physics with Astrophysics. Until late 2010 I'm staying in Bristol tutoring Maths and Physics. After that time, I hope to start pilot training. Flying was my main activity and source of income during University although I'm very keen on sport as well. |
Teaching Experience: I first started tutoring in my final two years at school during evenings and weekends in the subjects of Maths, Physics and Geography (my A-Level subjects). This was all on a one-to-one basis with pupils aged 11-16. Lessons would last no more than an hour and usually took place once a week. As part of my final year at University I undertook a scheme called 'Physics in Education' where I worked at Clevedon Community School (a Secondary Comprehensive) teaching physics to a class of approximatly 25 pupils twice a week. |
Tutoring Approach: When teaching on an individual basis, each pupil and each lesson will be different. My approach taken depends on the material being taught and the behaviour and personality of the student. Like most tutors, I prefer a relaxed environment and encourage questioning of the subject material where beneficial. A typical lesson plan introduces the subject material, explains what needs to be done, provides a variety of examples and then encourages the pupil to attempt further questions with less tutor input. In Physics and Maths, the pupil must understand and be confident with each topic before progression to the next. |
