Students have different learning styles, different background knowledge and they may differ in the kinds of explanation they need, so l like to tailor my approach to the student. I find a calm, supportive and structured approach very successful in enabling all students to achieve their potential, especially those with special needs. My usual approach is to clarify what we want to achieve, then carry out an assessment of the student's level of knowledge and ability in the subject area. Having identified strengths and weaknesses we have a foundation on which we can build. Then we set to work with exercises, explanations and homework, with frequent progress checks. It usually works very well! |
