Personal Description:
I am an Italian engineer who lives in London. I am currently working as an actor which is my passion but I want to make proper use of my solid background in engineering and my experience as a student in many different institutions around Europe by giving private tutorials to students. I am a very determined and ambitious person and I believe that many things can be achieved with strong will and the right tactics. As you can see from my CV which follows, I successfully studied in Iceland, Norway and England. I studied and worked with people from all over the world and with the most different cultural backgrounds. I myself am very interested and respectful of cultural differences and I am an expert traveller: I travelled extensively through Europe, Africa, India and Japan. What's more I have a degree in acting (2.1) from a very well reputed English academy in Birmingham (Birmingham School of Acting). I can speak English fluently and I have got a very good grasp of the language (in drama school we studied pronunciation for 3 years) and a very rich and flexible vocabulary. I enjoy staying with people and I like challenges. I take my responsibilities very seriously and I aspire to create a healthy working environment where the prime goal is the students' benefit.

Teaching Experience:

- Since I`ve been in London I have taught Italian to an English couple who have travelled to Italy many times, are really fond of the culture but have never got down to learning the language. I`ve also taught a Japanese woman who lives in the City and has working relationships with Italy. References available on request.

Moreover, I have tutored a 17 year old student form East Dulwich to prepare for and successfully pass his A-Level Maths exams. Reference available on request.

- In 2008 I worked as a teaching assistant in a kindergarten in Reykjavk for 8 months. This kindergarten had a special program of integration between kids with special needs (especially hearing impaired ones) and kids with no special requirements, which showed to be very successful. Besides assisting the teachers in taking care of the children daily, I was responsible of having a short weekly session to introduce children to English as a foreign language through playing and singing, which turned out to be very appreciated and great fun.

February - September 2008 Reykjavk, Iceland.
Teaching Assistant at the kindergarten "Slborg".

- During my years at university I continuously gave private tutorials of Maths and Physics to students of all ages from primary school to university level.

September 2000 - Fall 2007 Bologna, Italy.
Tutor of Maths, Physics and English to students from elementary school, high school and university.

Tutoring Approach:

Teaching is, without any doubt, one of the most important jobs ever. This might sound a cliche but it is what I really think. With almost 30 years spent as a student to gain two university degrees, I have encountered teachers form all over the world and experienced the most different teaching methods. A teacher can make the difference in a persons life, in a good or in a bad way. A good teacher can be a source of inspiration and can make you love a subject that you would have never imagined you could like otherwise. When teaching the student's benefit is the prime goal, this means that the teacher has to be able to understand what the student needs to access a specific subject, understand it, retain the information and be able to reuse it proactively whenever it is required of him. Since, as a private tutor, I work one on one with a student, I aim at creating a healthy and effective relation where the student feels comfortable to express what he/she doesn't understand and he/she can develop a positive attitude towards learning the subject under examination. Every student is unique, therefore the method used for each student is different. I plan to have a first session where I can assess what it is required of me and whether I am able to constructively interact with the student and then build a teaching program from that. I will commit to plan every session at home and come prepared to teach what is needed and I will expect that the student commits to doing his/her best to do his/her reading and homework.

Personal Description:
I am currently studying English Literature at the University of Edinburgh. I love reading, writing and reading some more. I also enjoy sketching while listening to music. I am a frank person, have an straightforward approach to everything in life and like people to behave the same way with me (which always does not happen). I love to have a laugh, but don't worry, I can be serious when needed( for example, when teaching your children English and History).

Teaching Experience:

While I have never tutored for money, I have an extensive tutoring experience. I volunteered to teach illiterate students English as a part of a volunteering program from my high school in India and have been a part of that program for the past two years. I also used to tutor my two siblings in History, Geography and English.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel that children learn best in a stress free environment. If they feel it is fun and challenging, they will be more willing to learn than if they feel it to be an obligation. English is an easy subject and children enjoy learning it, once they realize the joys that English has to offer. History can be challenging due to the vast amounts one has to learn by heart but steady habit of writing down answers to questions helps more than reading the material ten times. Other than that, History is a vastly interesting subject which helps us understand the workings of the present society and of course, knowledge about our ancestors. Geography is relatively straightforward subject. A lot of practice and a dedicated perusal of it should be enough to get good scores. While it can be relatively dry, it can be made interesting with pictures and videos.I focus on exam technique, past papers as well as text work (English Lit.)

My classes are for

- Adults, Business and Travel

My lessons for children are based around
- developing your child's speech, reading and writing,
- improving his comprehension
- building her Russian vocabulary to the "educated" standard,
- learning about Russian culture and history
- working on language intereferance and language code switching.
In my teaching children I use proven methods and stragegies developed in American and German schools specifically for biligual children, as well as materials created by a very talented Olga Soboleva.

Teaching Experience:

Teaching adults and children both at prep school and privately.

Tutoring Approach:

As Stephen Krashen puts it, "Simply being a native speaker of a language does not in of itself qualify one as a teacher of that language. Conscious and extensive knowledge of grammar does not make one a language teacher either. Rather, the defining characteristic of a good teacher is someone who can make input comprehensible to a non-native speaker, regardless of his or her level of competence in the target language."

Your primary goal as a student is to learn a language. In that regard my primary job as a tutor is to guarantee the effectiveness of your learning process in relation to your needs and expectations.

How do I achieve that? First and most importantly by combining the right set of tools in my teaching repertoire:

- TPRS - Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling - is at the core of my methodology.

Traditionally there has been a prejudiced view that only certain people can 'do' languages. That only smart students can become proficient and that only the really smart can move on to advanced study. TPRS has demonstrated that the vast majority of students can achieve high levels of success at all levels of foreign language study, and that acquiring a second language isn't nearly as difficult as we teachers sometimes make it. TPRS is making particular headway in language classrooms across the US and considerable research has been done and published on its efficacy.

TPRS works because it is brain-friendly and multi-sensory methodology, fitting the needs of various learning styles. Students develop a real "ear for the language," learning to listen and respond to what sounds right.

- Teaching grammar in meaningful context from day one
The focus is first and foremost on the message, with realistic expectations (level-appropriate) for grammatical accuracy. My philosophy is that of John DeMado: "Linguistic accuracy is a destination, not a point of departure." My way of teaching grammar is based on usefulness, frequency of use and level appropriateness.

- Tremendous amount of Comprehensible Input.

This approach supports the language acquisition theory by Stephen Krashen, who says: "We acquire language in only one way, when we understand messages, that is when we obtain comprehensible input."

- Reading as a major component of learning process.

In his book, The Power of Reading: Insights into the Research, 2nd edition, (p. 37) Stephen Krashen states, "Studies showing that reading enhances literacy development lead to what should be an uncontroversial conclusion: Reading is good for you. The research, however, supports a stronger conclusion: Reading is the only way we become good readers, develop good writing style, an adequate vocabulary, advanced grammatical competence, and the only way we become good spellers."

- Teaching Russian to heritage speakers as a language arts/social science.

What students say:

"As a language teacher myself, I was very particular about the kind of Russian lessons I wanted: communicative, engaging, learning through interaction. I didn't want to get bogged down in grammar but instead to focus on useful vocabulary and phrases I could actually use in Moscow during my regular visits. Julia's lessons have fitted this brief perfectly. Even in our first lesson, I was using Russian to interact in a very simple way, which gave me a huge confidence boost. Julia got to know me well in the initial lesson and then tailored all our classes to my interests and daily activities, making the lessons really relevant and interesting. I initially explained to Julia that I could only do 20 minutes homework a day while commuting into work. She therefore provided vocabulary flashcards I could use on the train to maximise this time. The whole service is bespoke! Julia is a patient, encouraging and engaging teacher "
I would highly recommend her lessons." Sarah, Surbiton

"I took about 5 months of private lessons with Julia, in preparation for a long motorcycle trip around Northern and Central Asia. Although I had been learning a bit of Russian a few years back, I had forgotten everything. In 5 months I went from not speaking any Russian to be able to speak simple sentences, ask questions, explain situations, and feel confident that I can find my way round in any situation that may arise through the trip. Julia impressed me by her enthusiasm, by how much research, effort and preparation she put in, to design the lessons to fit my specific needs, for this journey. I definitely would recommend her to my friends and anyone who wants to learn Russian fast and efficiently." Maria, New Malden

Mathematics for Science (partial differential equations, multivariate calculus, matrix algebra, Fourier analysis etc.),
Thermodynamics (Classical/Statistical),
Reaction Kinetics and Molecular Dynamics,
Symmetry and Group Theory,
Photochemistry,
Magnetic Resonance.

Teaching Experience:

For the last 5 years, I have tutored many young students for the 7+, 11+, 13+, common and public school entrance exams, as well as students working towards A Level and GCSE exams. This experience has allowed me to develop my one to one tutoring style, as has my own personal experience of tutorials at Oxford, where I was fortunate enough to be taught by many gifted academics. I also enjoy teaching larger groups in environments such as schools and workshops.

Tutoring Approach:

When I am tutoring, I aim to provide clarity as well as bringing the subject material to life. Being flexible, and catering to the different learning styles of my students is really important to me, but within this I will still maintain a systematic and methodical approach to the learning process. For example, in a typical lesson, I will discuss some relevant theory with the student, resolving any misconceptions and identifying any areas of confusion. Then, I will work through a carefully selected problem with them, guiding them step by step through to the answer, which has the dual purpose of providing them with a worked solution that they can use for revision purposes. Finally, I will give my student a few similar questions to tackle under my supervision, until they are able to solve the problems independently.

Most of my students are taught on a weekly basis for 60, 90 or 120 minutes, depending on what is required. Work between my sessions is an essential way of consolidating the material covered in my sessions. Normally, this will consist of a few exam problems that focus on further application of relevant theory. I will always prioritise quality over quantity when it comes to setting homework, as I am very aware that the student will already have an existing school workload and perhaps sport/musical commitments.

Self-motivation and willingness to work hard outside as well as in my sessions will ensure the success that my students aspire to.

Personal Description:
I am Francis currently studying for a PhD at University College London and a certified Higher Education Academy Fellow. I have a strong background in Chemistry, Biology and Maths, having studied a Science/Pharmacy related course up to the PhD level. I am formally trained to teach courses at higher level and keen to breakdown and apply these principles in tutoring at the level I am currently engaged in.
Patience and empathy are my best virtues and I know these combined with my strong knowledge in Science and Maths, up to college level offers me the ability to ensure my tutees meet their academic goals with outstanding results to show for our collective hard work and dedication.

Teaching Experience:

I am formally trained to teach, with a professional recognition from the Higher education Academy. My teaching experience are from diverse areas and levels. I have worked as a teaching assistant at various primary and secondary classes keenly observing, participating and understudying highly qualified and experienced teachers. Throughout my PhD programme, I have been teaching modules to various groups of undergraduate students, most of whom have offered outstanding reviews and feedback on my style of teaching

Tutoring Approach:

Anyone can learn anything! I am a firm believer in this saying. Understanding that different pupils/students have different approaches to learning and abilities is a good starting point in identifying unique strengths of individual students and utilizing their inherent abilities to bring across what they need to know. Some visualize better than others. Some are better at memorizing. Others good hearers. Taking time to understand a student will help develop a highly efficient unique learning strategy for him or her and yield a better output within the limited contact time thereby offering better value for money

Personal Description:
Hello, my name is Alice, I am 21 years old and I am a fourth-year student at the University of Sussex. This will be the final year of my undergraduate degree in English Literature. I have recently returned from living abroad for a year in Prague on an Erasmus+ scholarship scheme which I enjoyed immensely. I have been an intern for a few experimental London-based theater groups during Edinburgh Fringe, as well as working alongside a Brighton-based artist in her studio. At the moment I live in Brighton in the center of town with four of my friends. I am a member of the Sussex Short Fiction Society which I help to run, a place where I share my own writing. I love cooking for friends, reading and going to various poetry nights and theater performances in town.

Teaching Experience:

I have a twin sister with learning difficulties who I have tutored to pass her GCSE exams which she decided to retake after finishing school. I have worked in primary schools with children where I have shadowed teachers and helped to carry out exercises with individual students. I was a tutor during the sixth form to a year 11 pupil completing her GCSE English and History exams. I am also enrolled on the Buddy Scheme at my university which helps to guide visiting students as well as provide support for academic queries and to improve their English language skills. My experience as an undergraduate student has provided me with experience in teaching my peers- a fundamental part of my course is to run seminars in place of our tutors and guide students with the discussion. Peer-reviewing of work is also encouraged and it is something I do every day with my classmates.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring would be to set targets for the session, in order to help to boost contextual knowledge, analytical skills and close-reading. I prefer a laidback approach as I feel it helps to build interest and confidence in what is studied and this sense of ease in discussing ideas will encourage students to participate more in class. I am interested in the ways in which individual students learn as a starting point for how to construct the tutoring session rather than abiding by a fixed method and focusing on this learning style will cater to future exam or essay preparation. I am happy to help to structure and proof-read essays. For exams I believe that doing mock papers and spider-diagrams are the most useful. If you have any questions then please do e-mail me and I will be happy to explain further my approach to tutoring.
