| About Sheilagh: I have been living in Muswell Hill for the last 25 years and have become familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of local schools. I greatly enjoy the contact with young people, having brought up 3 daughters and I am still in contact with a number of my former pupils, now at university. |
Teaching Experience: I started off teaching German in adult education classes, followed by 10 years of ESL (English as a Second Language) in local community classes. For the last ten years I have been tutoring German and French, interspersed with some EFL at a local language school. I tutor in German from beginners to A2 and in French up to AS level, and have up top date knowledge of syllabus requirements of the main exam boards along with many years of past papers. I have also taught pupils who are being educated at home with great success. |
Tutoring Approach: I put a great deal into creating a very good relationship with my pupils and I feel that it is important to have a good rapport with their family too where possible. Whilst focussing on exams where appropriate I also aim to ensure language learning is enjoyable. All skills are covewred, with an emphasis on oral work. I always give homework, unless there is a convincing reason not to! |

| About Tom: I have been tutoring in some form or another for a long time - since I was at school in fact! I love learning and have generally found that I can make it enjoyable for others. I studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford. Since graduating I have worked in many different sectors over the years including the civil service, management consulting and think tanks. This experience has given me excellent practical and real world skills which provide a strong supplement to my academic qualifications. |
Teaching Experience: I have been a full-time private tutor now for a year. Most of my recent teaching has been for Economics A-Level, both Edexcel and AQA boards. I have also taught English and Maths at GCSE, Politics at A-level and Philosophy up to and including degree level. Please contact me for further details. Previously I taught English and Maths at a Saturday School while I was at college and taught Philosophy at degree level while I was doing my Masters' degree. Here are a selection of testimonials I have received about my tutoring. "10/10...The tuition was very helpful as Tom explained how to answer the questions very well and always had patience when I found it hard to grasp something, even if we had been over it before. He would always be interested to see my method of calculation and then if necessary show me a better way .... "Tom is an excellent tutor and during the exam I thought thank God I had Tom otherwise I might have broken down and I know I would not have been able to answer all of the questions." Mr Sanei (Mathematics GCSE) "9/10... The tutoring helped boost my confidence and I especially found the exam techniques helpful, not just for economics but for other subjects too." Ms Robinson (Economics, A-Level) "We would just like to thank you for coming here and for the work and all the support you gave Nishil during the lead up to the exams. He has spoken very highly of you and the lessons have given Nishil more confidence.", Mr and Mrs Parekh (Economics, A-Level) "10/10... I tried out two economics tutors before you and neither matched your standard and that should be taken as testament to your quality." Mr Shetty (Economics A-Level) |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is based on helping students to develop the tools to think through problems themselves. I find out what students know, and build from that to more complex concepts through explanation, examples and practice. I believe that everyone has huge unlocked potential to learn and understand new things if they are taught in the right way. I focus strongly on the syllabus and past exam papers to build students' ability and confidence to achieve the highest grades. I am patient, friendly and enthusiastic in my style, and sensitive to my students' needs. |

| About Isaac: I am currently an undergraduate student at Oxford University, reading for a BA in English Language and Literature. I was educated at University College School in Hampstead. I am extremely passionate about both English language and literature, and enjoy working with young people. I am friendly, understanding, and very enthusiastic. |
Teaching Experience: I spent six weeks teaching English as a foreign language to teenagers of various levels last summer at an international summer language school. While in my last year at school, I did some work with GCSE students to help improve their essay-writing skills. During my GAP year abroad, I spent two months in a secondary school teaching English as a foreign language. I also have many years of experience as a youth leader, and have worked with young people aged 7-16. |
Tutoring Approach: As a tutor, I feel that you are there to support the student in a way which their school teachers perhaps cannot. The very point of a one-on-one academic relationship is to be able to focus on the individual weaknesses and difficulties of the student and work through them with patience and understanding. I am happy to work through schoolwork with which students require extra help, to help them revise for examinations, or to supplement their general progress with additional material and knowledge. |

| About Sam: I am currently reading Physics at the University of Nottingham, and have just completed my second year. I received straight A grades at A-level in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics and am more than proficient in all of the above areas. I am a friendly and easy-going but i also understand the importance of hard work and commitment to obtain good grades. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored AS-level Chemistry and A-level Maths during the holidays of my university. I have also spent 6 months working in a school in Australia teaching and helping in prep in the boarding school (for all sciences, maths and also other areas). I also spent some of my A-level year working as a teachers assistant in a school in Camden with young children. |
Tutoring Approach: For science and maths tutoring there can be no substitute for teaching the basics and building upon them. Once the concepts have been taught there must be an extensive practice of questions which will solidify those concepts in the mind. Only by answering questions can a student really know if they understand the subject material. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Julieta: An enthusiastic and out going Latin American Spanish teacher from Argentina with a passion for helping others improve their language skills! - Especially Spanish (from beginners to expert), conversational Italian and English for non-English speakers. _________________________________ Terrific international experience, equally at home in South America, Europe and the UK. An exceptional ability to communicate at every level, from school children who want extra help with their Spanish homework to business managers who want to expand their ability to deal with overseas customers and those who want to learn more about the world around them - or are just going to on holiday!! |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching English to children and teenagers for approximately five years in Argentina together with "Spanish as a foreign language". I have now brought those courses to the UK and they are available now! _________________________________ In addition to languages I also teach drama and free expression for beginners and would be actors. A great technique to learn if you want to build personal confidence in every aspect of life - from delivering business presentations to building personal friendships. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a lot of experience in helping college and University students, children of all ages and, of course, their Mums and Dads! - from designing language classes to providing personal tuition and 1 : 1 language coaching. Those classes include: ________________________________ Regular classes with a careful mix of 25% listening, 25% oral, 25% reading and 25% writing skills all of which can be adjusted to meet the specific needs of the student. The classes use a range of techniques and games and inevitably have special homework assignments! Conversation classes: In these the student and I develop special themes (for college, work or just for fun!) and use those "themes" to help build grammar and vocabulary. The conversation classes are dynamic, full of games, and involve a little bit of acting - what better way to out your language skills into practice! Special classes: In these we handle a wide range of "real life" activities, from watching a movie, going to the supermarket, visiting a park and learning how to tango! ________________________________ The lessons can range from an hour to a whole day - so the classes can fit around your social, school and business life. So now there is no excuse in not getting going! Atrevete! Andiamo! |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Marina: I am 37 years old. I like being a teacher and I get true enjoyment from sharing my knowledge and skills with new learners, making them realize how easy learning can be and how much actually they do know already. I like helping young people enjoy learning and making learning easy for them. I am patient and adaptable and easy to talk to. I always discuss the needs of my new pupils very carefully and aim to build their confidence in the subject. As an Examiner with a well-known Board, I am able to help my students to maximise their potential using targeted revision and exam techniques. |
Teaching Experience: I have been a teacher for 12 years. I have always wanted to be a teacher. I have worked in several schools now, gaining experience from working with a variety of learners of various ages and learning styles. I have worked within the requirements of more than one examing board, therefore I am quite familiar with all exam formats. I have been a tutor also for 10 years with very good results. Students do like me within first session, gaining confidence and self reassurance that they are capable of a lot already. Only some issues need re-addressing, building on their prior knowledge. |
Tutoring Approach: Within the first session, I discover the individual needs of my learners, their strengths and weaknesses. Then I devise a plan to address the whole programme of study within the number of weeks available, so no topic is ignored. I work simultaneously on exam requirements, but also on skill development, skills that the student can benefit from, outside the boundaries of a specific exam format. Students find themselves forgetting the time, often engrossed in their work, mentally challenged and stimulated. I set short homework at times, so that students can practise independently on those skills they develop with me, being reassured that they can transfer those skills further. I do provide learning materials which I do personalize for each student. |

| About Jonathan: I am a Cambridge Graduate of Natural Sciences, and I am now in my first year of a graduate Medicine degree at St George's in South London. I have a good grounding in all the sciences, obtained from the broad basis of my first degree. I am friendly, approachable, and have been CRB checked. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught at a six week summer camp in Cambridge in 2007, with extensive pupil contact. I am also currently tutoring several GCSE/AS science pupils. |
Tutoring Approach: Although it is preferable to completely understand the scientific knowledge and basis behind doing something. This is why I always try to see if the scientific principles behind the question are understood properly. I understand this may not always be possible, so I try and come up with foolproof methods of answering a question which do not always require the same depth of understanding. |

| About andrew: I am currently a second year medical student at the university of bristol. In my first year I managed to gain the award of distinction, something only offered to 12 out of 240 people in my year group adn overall I am on course to complete my degree with honours. I enjoy working with people and am very sociable. I spend a great deal of time doing sports and going to they gym as I believe its important to have a well balanced and healthy lifetsyle. Coupled with exam tutoring I am also open to any requests for help with applications to medical school which I know from experience can be a very stressful period. |
Teaching Experience: During my GCSEs I tutored biology students going through the same exams. I then extended this into my A-levels where I worked in particular with one student to pull up his biology grade by two marks and so get him into the course he wanted. Together we succeeded in doing this. Although my experience is limited I believe because I have been thorugh the system so recently I am able to understand what is expected for the exams from a viewpoint many other tutors haven't had the opportunity to do so. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe a lot of the time the difficulty comes from a failure in communication from the teacher. Putting things into different formats and processing them properly is the correct way to learn. Its never enough just to know something, things must be understood and this must be tested. To do this questions need to be both asked and answered by the pupil and that I believe is a key role of the tutor. Im fully open to tutoring more than one student at a time if asked to. |

| About Alice: I actually specialise in Archaeology and Anthropology, but am interested in all creative subjects and all social sciences. If there is something specific you would like to be tutored in which isn't listed below please don't hesitate to contact me. I'm energetic, punctual, well presented, easy-going and enthusiastic. I am flexible and try to find an approach best suited to the student. I am good at communicating with children and adults of all ages. |
Teaching Experience: This is the first time I have worked as a tutor, but I am passionate about teaching and love working with people. I am good with children, having worked with children at the Cambridge Science Festival, as well as spending lots of time with my young niece. I'm also good at talking to people my own age, and take great satisfaction from discussion. |
Tutoring Approach: I enjoy talking things through in logical ways, as well as thinking of new ways to explain things. I am creative and willing to improvise. I am organised and thorough, and willing to put a lot of time and energy into tutoring in order to achieve good results. |

| About Kerry: I graduated from Nottingham Trent University two years ago with a degree in Applied Biology. I enjoy learning about the world around me, which is why I chose a science degree, everything seems to hold a wide eyed wonder for me! Saying that I am very down to earth, and work very hard. I love meeting new people and have the ability to read people which makes me very personable and friendly as well as empathic. I am considering becoming a teacher and remember very clearly the amazing feeling I always got when I understood something for the first time and I want to help others experience that too. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught various people. I was in the ATC for a time and I taught the new cadets about airplanes and how to do drill. I was also involved with a programme at University where we visited schools to teach practical science, particularly chemistry. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that everyone is different and so there can be no one method of teaching, but it has to be interesting with plenty of examples and illustrations. Communication is also key and I will take time to find out where the student needs help and target those areas as well as getting to know them so I understand their needs as well as possible. If the national curriculum needs to be followed I will ensure that it is, and I will utilise various sources to ensure my knowledge, and therefore the student's, is up to date. |

| About Harry: I'm a (relatively) recent Cambridge graduate, moving to Bristol from London to find a less stressful life, and lower rent. I'm interested in music and outdoor pursuits, and education. I'm working at the moment, and considering a PGCE at some point in the future. |
Teaching Experience: After some voluntary work in India over the winter, I have been working in an English college in London, teaching English as a foreign language. I also have other informal tutoring experience, helping friends and younger students get to grips with various subjects. |
Tutoring Approach: As a tutor you are generally supplementing another teacher's work, so it important to get up to speed on what that teacher is doing. Overall I would say my approach is fairly informal, based on identifying problem areas and going carefully through the basic ideas necessary to understand a particular teaching point. As such a tutor primarily provides support to the learner to help them follow their main course, and can give further work as necessary to clarify or expand on anything relevant. |

| About yvonne: I am married with no children and enjoy teaching very much. I have a range of interests outside of education. I particularly enjoy reading, crafts, swimming, cycling and running. I am interested in conservation and have involved the children at my school in a number of projects, including the development of a school vegetable garden. I think the children I teach would describe me as patient, calm and kind. I believe it is important that children have the opportunity to develop a their own pace and encouraged to find their own particular skills and talents. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught in the Primary sector for the last 26 years and have been at my current school for the last 10 years. Most of my experience has been with Foundation Stage/Key stage 1, although I have also taught Key Stage 2 Children. I have experience especially of teaching Year 2 children and so have a good understanding of the requirements for the Key Stage 1 SATS. I have tutored children of this age on a regular basis. |
Tutoring Approach: I always start by assessing the pupil to find the pupils level of attainment and identify strengths and areas for development. I believe it is important to break the learning up into manageable steps and to set targets for the pupil that are easily attainable. By doing so, the pupil develops greater confidence and is more likely to progress further and faster. Depending on the individual needs of the pupil, an individual programme of work can be developed, that will ensure individual learning styles are catered for. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Ray: I have been teaching maths for about 25 years. I taught wealthy and high achieving private students in London for much of that time, where I was always very busy and it was quite usual to be teaching "A" levels or International Baccaleureate to the sons and daughters of extremely wealthy foreign nationals, business people, and politicians. Then I moved to Essex... Owing to my London teaching over many years, it is quite possible that, in terms of hours worked, I am the most experienced private tutor of GCSE and "A" level maths in the UK. |
Teaching Experience: Please see the above. "A" level maths and statistics, GCSE, and some degree level are all covered. I can also help with statistics coursework. |
Tutoring Approach: I always try to give the student confidence. Although I will tell them frankly whether or not I think they are going to pass, or get the grade they require. It is surprising, however, how wrong you can be sometimes. |

| About Michael: Hello, I am a 24 year old man from Northern Ireland. I studied at The University of Edinburgh and was awarded a First Class in Biological Sciences (Hons) Plant Science in 2006. In the following year I studied for my PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Before moving to Glasgow last week, due to personal circumstances, I taught in a Secondary School in South Shields. Keen to remain in education I am a supply teacher with Glasgow City Council. |
Teaching Experience: Fresh from University with 1 years Science teaching experience means that I am familiar and well practiced in modern teaching techniques. I have an extensive bank of teaching resources and textbooks from teaching Biology, Chemistry and Physics at KS3 and KS4 level and Biology to Higher level. |
Tutoring Approach: I encourage 'Independent Learning' with my students and incorporate 'Thinking Skills' and 'Assessment for learning' in all my lessons. Through personal evaluation of my own teaching I have found that sharing clear lesson objectives with students benefits long term learning and so these too are incorporated into lessons. I enjoy teaching learners of all abilities and would create an individual learning plan with every student so get in touch. |

| About Barbara: I am a 25 year old woman and I am French. I have a "maitrise" of English; in England it is equivalent to a MA. At the moment I am language assistant in a comprehensive school in Liverpool: that is to say I help pupils from 11 to 16 years old with French. I mainly help those who want to take their GCSE in French. |
Teaching Experience: In France, I was "surveillante" in a collge (pupils aged 11 to 15); that is to say I had to supervise them at break and lunch time. Moreover, I helped them with their homeworks. I also gave private tuitions of English to a 14 year-old boy and to a lady grown-up who wanted to go back to university. |
Tutoring Approach: Personally, I am convinced that practising a language with a Native is a great opportunity for a student to hear authentic speaking and it is also the opportunity to pronunce words the right way. Moreover, as I am French, I can give them some tips so as not to say huge mistakes during the GCSE exam. |
