Tutoring Approach: Diamond is extracted in raw form. In order to get the shining surfaces of a diamond, one needs to grind and polish it accurately at specific angles. Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Lois Anne: I have been living in South Kensington for 6 years, working as a teacher and as a student myself. I came to London to study for a Masters in Russian Literature at UCL. Literature is a great love and my aim in teaching is to share and explore with students of both literature and language the intricacy and depth of the English language. The teachers that make the greatest impression and whose classes remain with you are those who transmit their enthusiasm and it is very much my intention that classes should be an enjoyable and engaging experience with an emphasis on what the student needs support with. The aim is to build confidence with the class that will carry itself outside of, and sustain itself away from the one-to-one class dynamic. My approach to singing teaching is much the same. I want singing classes to be a relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable time, exploring the vocal abilities of students in whatever capacity they require. I do focus on technique for at least part of every class as good technique is the foundation for vocal flexibility, confidence and ease, but we always leave plenty of time to cover a wide range of repertoire pieces chosen by students and myself. |
Teaching Experience: 1997-2000 - English Coach whilst a literature student at Leeds University. Private GCSE English students from local private school. Focus on exam preparation and coursework support. 2001 - Trinity TESOL teaching qualification. Taken on as an English teacher at the school where I trained. Taught multi-level classes to students of all levels. 2001-2004 English teacher at 'The English Studio' in Shepherd's Bush. Taught classes of all levels and all ages from children to adult. Beginner to proficiency level. Exam preparation. 2004-2006 Tutor in English Literature, Language and Singing for tutoring agency 'Top tutors' based in London. Taught students preparing for key-stage, A-level and A2 level, focus on exam preparation and coursework support. Taught adults and children singing. 2001-2007 Teaching private clients of all ages and abilities singing. Focus on bel canto technique to extend range, build strength and vibrato, increase performance technique and prepare for exams where required, or just singing for pleasure! |
Tutoring Approach: I have been teaching English Literature and Language for about 10 years now, both in the classroom and one-to-one. My attitude to learning is very much guided by student engagement; learning can be a great pleasure at any age in a supportive environment where a student feels they are covering useful, pertinent and relevant ground. I try to make one-to-one classes as student specific as possible so that rather than unnecessarily repeating what has already been covered in the classroom, tutoring time is spent filling in any gaps or supporting any elements of the course that may represent a challenge. I want my students to feel confident that they are in control of their knowledge and learning. whilst assisting them to the best of my abilities to fulfill their highest potential. This is also true of my attitude to teaching singing. Music, which can and should be a relaxing and enjoyable pastime, too often becomes an added stress in the educational timetable. Feeling pressured and unsupported is in fact deeply counter-productive to working and freeing up the voice and can leave children and young adults with a lasting bad impression of music and their own musical abilities. My aim is to make lesson time challenging and fun, creating an unintimidating environment where students can approach vocal technique in as rigorous or relaxed a fashion as is required. Some students flourish with the direction of working towards an exam, others work better within a less structured approach. My intention is that both English and Singing classes should reflect the individual needs of students and that my role is to support them in the ways that they need to make lesson time productive, enjoyable and confidence building, whatever the age, ability or learning requirements presented. |

| About Oliver: I was educated at Tonbridge School, Kent, before gaining entry to study for a BA degree in Chinese at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) Thornhaugh Street, London. |
Teaching Experience: In my last year of secondary school I was responsible for mentoring 60 boys of varying ages. A large part of this role involved going through topics with them from GCSE through to A Level. Since leaving I have still been called upon by some of these students for their final exams for entry to the likes of Oxford, Cambridge and LSE. I specialise in British and American Politics. In particular, I can provide specific tuition in the following EdExcel modules or in the subjects which these modules cover: AS Level Modules: 6491 - People & Politics (Democracy/Elections/Parties/Pressure Groups) 6492 - Governing the UK (Constitution/Parliament/Executive/Judiciary) 6493 - Changing UK System (Elections/Constitutional Reform/Devolution/EU) A Level Modules (American Politics): 6500 - Government & Politics 4C (Elections & Voting/Political Parties) 6501 - Government & Politics 5C (Constitution/Supreme Court/Congress/Presidency/Federal Bureaucracy) 6502 - Government & Politics 6C (Comparative American & British Politics: Constitutions/Judiciaries/Assemblies/Executives) Furthermore, I offer in-depth analysis of the following A-Level English texts: Geoffrey Chaucer, The Merchant's Tale Harold Pinter, The Homecoming William Shakespeare, Hamlet William Shakespeare, The Tempest |
Tutoring Approach: I will be approaching sessions with the notion of tailoring them to the specific requirements of the candidate - if one requires to go from the start of the syllabus in depth or merely requires clarification or revision of a topic not understood in school. In short - any concern. I will also be providing comprehensive, concise notes in every topic and explanations of how the exam works, and thus, how to reach the highest marks by answering them in the correct and focused manner. I will set homework and rigorously revise the information with the candidate so it should be noted that sessions will be thorough and will require an extra commitment from the candidate. Above all, I bring to the table the experience of having completed them very recently. Please enquire for availability (Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri 5.30pm-8.30pm, Thurs 3.30pm-8.30pm). |

| About Liliana: I hold a degree in English and French language and literature, possess a CPE certificate awarded by Cambridge ESOL examinations board in London as well as certificates for preparing students for Cambridge exams awarded by the British Council. I can speak other languages at intermediate level. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience in teaching English, ESOL and French both abroad and in the UK . I have taught English and French full time in schools to students aged 7-19 and ESOL to adults in language colleges and privately. |
Tutoring Approach: I am a young, patient and enthusiastic tutor who loves teaching and sharing knowledge. I am not a native English, but this can be regarded as an advantage because this fact enables me to insist more upon spelling and pronunciation combining various methods and strategies by which I was able to acquire language and literature knowledge myself. I believe in interactive teaching using modern methods such as role-play, debates, simulation. Moreover, increasing the students' motivation and self-confidence is equally important. |

Teaching Experience: I have had several private trumpet pupils over the years and can also teach Piano, Guitar and Music Theory. I would also like to teach computer based music recording and have marked A level music technology papers for several years. I specialise in Cubase. |
Tutoring Approach: I have enjoyed the teaching that I have done and my pupils have achieved excellent results sometimes in short spaces of time. I think that it is essential that lessons are enjoyable and I suppose I take basically an informal approach though with an emphasis on student practice and hard work being essential to any improvement. |

| About Dawn: I have a degree in maths and a PGCE. I have a recent CRB check. I enjoy maths and it gives me great pleasure to help students overcome their fears and achieve what they considered impossible. I am patient and have a good sense of humour which I consider essential to building good relationships with my students. |
Teaching Experience: I taught in primary schools for about 6 years and more recently have been teaching numeracy to adults in a college for almost 4 years. |
Tutoring Approach: My first step would be to establish what the student wants/needs to achieve and to assess where they are starting from. I like to use a variety of methods and activities to keep a student's interest and to ensure real understanding. I am good at breaking topics down into manageable steps and explaining them clearly. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Maria: I have had a lot of experience and sucess in teaching the 3-5, 5-11 and adult curriculum. I enjoy tutoring people to encourage them to expand on their skills. |
Teaching Experience: Completed a BA Educational Studies at the University of Edinburgh. This involved placements in Primary 4, 7, 5/6 and nursery. Whilst at university I was involved in teaching drama and life skills to a youth group. I also worked part time in nurseries following the 3-5 curriculum. Since completing my degree I have worked in a college, teaching adults and young people how to access computing and library services. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is to audit what is already known and structure a plan that will be followed to expand on the gaps. It is important to build confidence in skills and knowledge that is already present, and engage the learner in something that is meaningful to them. |

View Rosie's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Rosie: I am currently undertaking a Masters degree in social work at the University of Bristol, to qualify as a registered social worker after having worked within the broad social care field for the past 6 years, primarily in the homelessness and drug and alcohol sectors. I have a degree in English Literature and Language from St Hilda's College, Oxford University and a Masters in Cultural Studies from Birkbeck College, University of London as well as a range of qualifications in health and social care. My A Levels were all at A grade and were in English, Government and Politics, Religious Studies, Philosophy and General Studies. I went to Oxford from a school with little history of sending students to Oxbridge and was involved in access and widening participation initiatives during my time there. As such, I'm interested in supporting students through the university admissions process and more broadly as well as in specific English Literature and Language teaching. |
Teaching Experience: I mentored at a middle school in Oxford for over a year, providing tutoring and more general emotional support to 3 young people. I have also been involved in tutoring in less direct contexts while working in a Family Contact Centre and with young people and vulnerable adults as an outreach worker, mental health support worker and drug and alcohol worker. I have also helped to raise my much younger brother and have supported him with his homework on a regular basis. I have experience as a trainer within the social work field, teaching a range of specialist subjects to groups of 15 students and developing training materials, which has helped me develop me skills in evaluating the effectiveness of my teaching. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that everyone has the potential to do well in their chosen subjects or other learning contexts when provided with support and encouragement. Through experience I have found that students and clients do best when allowed the freedom to make mistakes so that these can be learned from within a safe and secure environment and each student's own creative potential developed. I have found that this is the most rewarding way for people to learn and believe in the importance of enjoying learning for its own sake, while at the same time being well aware of the broader academic and educational framework that many students will be working within. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Anna: I am a 25 year old Australian, living in Glasgow for the rest of the year and really enjoying it so far! I have traveled a lot, spent a year in Berlin at university and have a mostly artistic range of interests including linear drawing, eating yummy food and reading. I'm easy to approach and look forward to working with you! |
Teaching Experience: I have always been an excellent student, finding that whatever I was learning always made a lot of sense to me. From primary and secondary school to university--including Humboldt Universitt in Berlin--I have always achieved top results. But more than that, I have always been able to see quickly where the confusion of my classmates lies and how best to explain the subject clearly to them. In this way I have helped classmates throughout my entire school career, one-to-one and in study groups. |
Tutoring Approach: I don't approach tutoring with any specific plan, as I think the most important thing is what inspires the individual to extend their interest and motivation to a certain subject. The first thing i do, to this end, is to speak to the individual and I'm guided by what I hear in developing a study plan and certain goals. Though this method may appear quite fluid, I do stand for certain results and can be relied on not to let you let yourself down. |

| About Christopher: I am a young(22) graduate of The University of London in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies BA(Hons). I am originally from Northern Ireland and therefore am a native english speaker however I have studied Spanish to University degree level and lived in Argentina(a large spanish speaking country in South America) for a year. I have studied Spanish for GCSE, A-Level and Degree level so I know what you need to know for these exams. As part my degree program I studied Spanish at the University of Buenos Aires and achieved the highest level of language certification that they offer. I have visited many other spanish speaking countries such as Spain, Chile and Uruguay and am therefore fully aware of differences between accents and dialects. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience teaching languages and am completely flexible and adaptable to the needs of each individual student. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that the key to learning a language successfully and naturally is oral and aural exposure- to hear and to speak that language as much as possible. Therefore, from the very first class I try to get even the beginner speaking Spanish. I use traditional teaching materials such as grammar books, dictionaries and the teaching of verb conjugations and vocabulary but also emphasise a communicative approach through listening practise(films, music, news and tv in spanish language) and conversation practise. I can help with any GCSE level, A Level or University Level needs and am happy to teach all ages. Having lived in a spanish speaking country for an extended period has equipped me with the necessary knowledge and skills to pass on the most important parts of a language-every day essential communication- plus my university studies in the UK and abroad have equipped me with an excellent level of understanding of the more demanding topics and vocabulary which, for example, an A-Level Spanish student may need to learn. I have also studied Portuguese to degree level and have lived in Portugal and Brazil and am therefore happy to teach Portuguese also. I am friendly and helpful and open to all questions you may have. Please contact me for further information. My rates are reasonable and negotiable and the first class will be half price! Muchas gracias y buena suerte en tu aprendizaje del castellano! |
