| About Alva: I have graduated from Imperial College, having studied biochemistry and am now pursuing my PhD in London. I enjoy teaching and am looking to tutor in biological sciences to undergraduate students, A level students or those studying for GCSE examinations. |
Teaching Experience: Previously I have experience in tutoring A level students in biology and chemistry. I have also taught many undergraduate students by given small group tutorials and lab practical demonstration. |
Tutoring Approach: I enjoy the one on one teaching as you can focus on students targets and the student will be able to see much improved results. I also try to understand the weakness in the students' knowledge quickly, and try to increase their understanding of the principals behind the problem areas. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Larissa: I am a former writer and editor for New York Moves Magazine, now based in London. I received my BA in the "Great Books" program at St. John's College, a broad-based curriculum of the seminal works in philosophy, literature, history, math, and science. I am about to receive my MA degree in Classical Theatre from Central School of Speech and Drama. |
Teaching Experience: I tutored for a year in New York under the federal "No Child Left Behind" program, and before that, led daycare sessions at the San Francisco Tennis Club, for children ages 1-6 years. |
Tutoring Approach: I examine what work the student is doing in school, where he is having difficulties, and try to determine from where those difficulties stem. I prefer to ask leading questions rather than to merely correct mistakes; I find the student begins to understand more quickly and thoroughly that way. When editing written work, I advise the writer on how to improve the work for clarity and elegance, pointing out structural and stylistic problems, and encouraging the writer to make those changes himself before I offer my own solutions. |

View Curtis's Profile
Availability: Weekends / Weekdays (evenings)
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Curtis: I am a young professional, recent English graduate, living and working in North West London. I am currently spending a lot of time thinking about careers and my professional ambitions and something that always comes up is teaching. I remember how frustrated I would get with teachers and classmates at school, because my learning style wasn't the same as everybody else's, which is inevitable in a class of 30. This is obviously the great attraction of one to one tuition and I would love to get the chance to pass on some of my knowledge. |
Teaching Experience: I have little experience of teaching, but having left university just over a year ago and completing my A levels in 2003, I am still in touch with the AS and A2 specs for English and am easily capable of brushing up on texts before meeting pupils. I also still have a lot of course notes and secondary reading material and I'd hope that, as a younger person, students might find tuition from me a little less daunting. |
Tutoring Approach: As I am new to this, I would be inclined to mimic the style of my good teachers at school, prepare handouts and visuals as well as going through essay structures and exam techniques for the student to keep in their own notes. Some close textual analysis of key passages in the text as well as more topline views of plots, themes and characters. GCSE, AS and A2 level specifications are widely available online and give detailed points of focus. I also have a lot of friends in the teaching profession who have given me example material, that differs minimally from the notes and handouts I have from A level and GSCE. I am a likeable guy with an energetic and honest personality. I have often thought about teaching and friends have urged me to do it. I am ambitious and successful in my professional life, but I am hoping that the chance to tutor might give me valuable experience to go into teaching within the public sector. |

| About Peter: I am a young, friendly teacher who has high expectations of both myself and my students. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught English and Media across a range of levels in a secondary school in Enfield for two years. I have prepared students for their Year 9 SATs exams, GCSEs and A-Level English Literature exams. During this time, I have specialised in teaching English to students for whom English is not their first language, and have created a programme of study for students labelled gifted and talented in English. Tutoring Approach: I believe tutoring is most successful when personlised. For me, this means talking to the tutee about what they feel they need to learn, and where their weaknesses lie in order to create a comprehensive and effective programme. I have high expectations and believe learning is done best when enjoyed in a positive atmosphere which promotes confidence. |

| About Natalia: My name is Natalia Miralles. I am 28 years of age and am currently doing supply teaching around the Liverpool area. |
Teaching Experience: I am in my third year of teaching in Liverpool after qualifying as a Teacher in July 2006 from liverpool Hope University. I taught at a Primary School in Everton for 2 years, the first year as a year 3 Teacher and the second year as a Supply Teacher. the latter requiring me to teach all subjects from reception to year 6. I have also worked as part of the making good progress initiative which involved tutoring children for their SATs after School hours. I then worked in a primary support centre for half a term to help children overcome barriers to learning. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is working with children when they are best able to learn. This involves a mind friendly approach to learning, which aims to engage all thir senses. I feel children are best able to learn whent they are thoroughly involved and motivated in their studies. I try to ensure all tutoring senses use visual aids and hands on experience where necessary. If children do not respond well to the way I tutor, I am able to adapt it to suit their needs. All children learn in different ways and I feel its my job as a Teacher to discover it. |

| About Kamalia: I'm a Year 10 student at Stanborough School currently doing my GCSEs. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught people close to my age, both older and younger. I don't have any professional experience, but consider myself a good teacher. One reason for this is that I have had good feedback from the people I have previously tutored. Also since I myself am still a student, I would know how best to approach the younger generation. I am doing this to earn money in order for myself to get tutoring, so I can excel, as in class, especially mathematics, my teacher(s) don't seem to teach me enough, for which I don't blame them. |
Tutoring Approach: Leading from what I was saying earlier, in the section which included my teaching experience, I have had very little, apart from tutoring people similar to my age group or younger, professional teaching experience. Although, I believe that I can teach people close to my age or younger as I myself understand best on how they will learn. |

| About Athamos: I am 19 years old and thoroughly enjoy working alongside other people. My years in the Combined Cated Force, which included a course in leadership skills, have taught me to lead teams effectively, as did my Scuba experiences as a BSAC Dive Leader and PADI Open Water Diver. I am interested in art/design but am also competent in maths and physics. From september I will be reading Natural Sciences at UCL and plan to follow up with postgraduate study in Industrial Design; my dual-abilities in art and science allow me to deliver well-rounded tuition. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught students in my local area maths and art, ranging from 8 to 17 years of age. Furthermore, as a corporal in the CCF I led numerous outdoor activities, taking charge of groups of younger students. Also, as a BSAC Dive Leader I have acquainted numerous students with both basic theory and practice of Scuba diving, as well as leading decompression dives in the ocean. From this I have learnt to teach students younger, older and my own age effectively. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach is very direct; though it sounds simple I tend not to set hundreds of examples but instead explain the topics clearly. Sometimes I go into greater detail than the sylabus 'requires', as it is far better for the student to understand what is going on rather than recite equations; ultimately they will do better in exams. |

| About David: I am currently researching for a Masters degree in French literature at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. I spent a year in Chambry in the French Alps studying on the ERASMUS programme and working. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught English during one Summer in Poland, I have assisted in classrooms in France, helped foreign students with their English in the UK, and haved tutored French from beginners to University level. |
Tutoring Approach: Foreign languages especially are not easy to acquire, and require a certain amount of discipline, but I always find that it is essential to develop good working methods and strategies in my pupils; I help them develop on their weaknesses but I also furnish them with the tools they require to keep on building on what I teach. I will however teach whatever is most needed - grammar, vocabulary, literary analysis, etc. |

| About Julie: I am french and I study English literature in cardiff (4th year)). I love teaching and hopefully in one or two years, I'll be a teacher in France. |
Teaching Experience: One year experience (2005-2006) of teaching in an american university (William Jewell College, Missouri). I was teaching French to groups of 2O students as well as individual students (tutoring), from beginers to advanced students.(conversation, oral practise, oral games, grammar, exercises, writing, theater, literature, translation, etc.) |
Tutoring Approach: To my mind, a language should be learnt in a fun way, that's why I'm always trying to make the apprenticeship more attractive (especially for beginers and intermediate students). I usually insist on oral practise, most of the time the student is afraid to speak or to make mistakes, especially in class. If the student is afraid, or needs too much time to think of an answer, he will atomatically loose interest in class and will make very few progresses. I consider tutoring as a priviledged moment to help overcome these difficulties. Meanwhile, I do not underestimate written work, which is essential to memorization. I like to give some work between each lesson. Of course each student is different and has his own needs and I am more than willing to adapt my methods. |

| About Oliver: I'm Oliver, I'm a 26 year old from Sheffield with English as my first language. I have just completed a degree in education studies and history at the University of Derby and have experience in cultural and religous history as well as the more traditional topics. My education portion of my degree looked at the psychology of learning and behaviour management, allowing me to understand many learners and the difficulties faced. I am commited to acquiring additional knowledge through my own development and love languages, currently engaged in learning Japanese with another private tutor in Sheffield whom I can recomend. |
Teaching Experience: Having completed a degree in education studies and history, I have extensive experience teaching from primary, through secondary and even post 16. As well as this I have been involved in private tutoring and youth work throughout my time at university. Prior to this I was a technical coach for a major internet service provider and built and delivered a variety of bespoke training programmes in IT related fields. |
Tutoring Approach: My main approach will always be to teach an academic skillset to underpin the traditional study of any subject. This allows me to help learners understand how they learn and make them more autonomous, skills often taught at university. These skills are transferrable to other areas of life and will help focus and organise learners. On top of this, it is my aim to provide guidance from the curricula and provide a widening of this through directing reading and personal development - but every learner is different and as such discussion and ongoing reflective review would dictate the tweaking of any style to match that of the learner. |

| About fiona: I came into teaching because I love literature and enjoy teaching work from all genres and eras. Overtime I have become adept at teaching language . It is rewarding to empower students to write to argue and persuade effectively. I have developed an interest in teaching creative writing. I still believe education can change lives . It is empowering and success can boost self esteem. |
Teaching Experience: My first teaching post was in a large comprehensive school. Here I taught pupils of all ages and abilities. I enjoyed and was successful at teaching lower ability students ,encouraging them to gain good grades. I began to teach A' level which in time has become my specialism. Again the students were of mixed ability. It was rewarding to see first generation pupils go off to university. My second school was a grammar. Here the challenge was to stretch the more able and encourage the disaffected. I think my subject knowledge was enhanced by this experience. To inform my exam teaching I have for ten years been an examiner at GCSE and A level. |
Tutoring Approach: I see my role as tutor as that of reinforcing and consolidating classroom work. I focus on areas the pupil feels less confident about and with intensive work and tailored teaching aim to improve knowledge. Since I understand the requirements of each key stage I know the standards a pupil should be working towards and have my own schemes of work based on the curriculum and key stages. With exam pupils I can focus on course work and nearer the exam provide essay examples and strategies based on my examiner handbook and marking scheme. |

| About Laura: I am a 20 year old University of Edinburgh student currently in first year studying for a degree in Mathematics. I have always had a passion for maths and enjoyed helping fellow pupils at school and try to fuel there passion for a subject which is often difficult to grasp hold of. |
Teaching Experience: While I don't have a great deal of tutoring experience; I am young and still in education so I am still familiar with the material that is taught at school. I also remember the ways in which I was taught and want to pass them on. The fact that I am young and still learning myself is also an advantage as I understand the difficulty that can arise in learning a new subject for the first time. It is also, I feel, less intimidating to be taught by someone nearer the same age as there is less of a definite tutor/tutee boundary and therefore an awkward situation can become more relaxing. |
Tutoring Approach: I feel it is best if there specific areas that the pupil has looked over and realised they are struggling with. That way they are also aware of any problem areas and can come with questions that they got stuck on in class, or while doing homework etc. I think the best method is starting from the basics as a lot of exam style questions can be simple questions but disguised with difficult wording. So by knowing the basic steps, an effective way of studying exam questions is learning to break them down into simpler problems. The key trick to passing any maths exam is practicing past papers and by doing past papers pupils can further see which areas are a struggle and by applying the above knowledge we can go through them step-by-step. |

Tutoring Approach: I do see teaching a dual interaction where one person helps to reenginner the mind of other snd helps to person to rediscover his/her self potential. In tutoring you are abkle to diagnose the student and be able to understand the needs of the person better thus you can help better. I am a person who cna go down the level of the student and can adjust myself to various needs of the students depending of their personalities. i like to see the progress and be able to help students overcome difficulties mutually. |

I have experience of teaching English as a foreign language at residential summer camps and I have undertaken degree modules in the application of teaching methods for EFL. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a holistic approach to tutoring, believing that it's sometimes better to start from the beginning and understand the problem as a whole before focusing on details. Often the problem can be much larger than spelling or grammar and it is therefore necessary to get back to basics first. I am informal and approachable with a sense of fun! |
