| About Claire: I know so many people who struggle with English - whether they're learning to speak it, to read it, to write it, or to enjoy it. I'm lucky enough to be very much in love with the language; my mission as a teacher is to impart that love to my students. It certainly doesn't come easily to everyone, but learning English - at whatever level - should never be a painful process. As a child, I always had my head in a book, and at GCSE, my exam script obtained one of the top four marks in the country. Now I hold a BA in English from Oxford University, and I've had both my fiction and non-fiction published. When I'm not working on my novel, I'm a freelance editor, translator and tutor. If English is the number one in my life, French is a close second. I find communicating in another language hugely rewarding, and the French food and lifestyle is certainly a bonus! And when I'm not speaking French or reading a novel? I'll be painting, at the cinema, playing my cello, hill-walking or seeing friends. |
Teaching Experience: My tutoring experience is highly diverse, and I am equipped to help dyslexics and the less literary-minded as well as avid bookworms. I've tutored an incredible variety of people - from disadvantaged New York city kids to gifted 13-year olds sitting their GCSEs two years early. My most valuable teaching experience, however, has been my extensive work with dyslexic pupils, which has taught me to be extremely sensitive to the ways in which different brains learn. The teaching methods that work for dyslexics can often enhance the learning process for non-dyslexic students, and I've found that the multi-sensory approach I've developed makes learning sessions fun and productive for both teacher and pupil. |
Tutoring Approach: All sessions are of course perfectly tailored to the individual student's needs, whether that involves instruction on essay planning and exam technique, general discussion of a book to spark interest and ideas, or simply help with spelling and grammar . If you are a non-native speaker, I can provide conversation practice with session-specific vocabulary cards provided at the end of the lesson. Get in touch with a short description of what you're looking for, and we can discuss what approach would work best for you or your child. |

| About Rebecca: I am an enthusiastic teacher with an active approach to learning. I enjoy my job and have endless patience. I believe that every child should fulfil their own potential and that all children are individuals and should be taught as such. I strive to increase every child's confidence by celebrating their success no matter how small. I have a wealth of my own materials which I can use when tutoring your child. |
Teaching Experience: I gained my PGCE in 2005 and have worked in a variety of schools (state and private) for the past three years. I have gained experience of teaching at all stages but have most experience with middle and upper stages (P4 - 7). Tutoring Approach: I am patient and enthusiastic. I believe in working from previous knowledge and teaching pupils in a learning context which is meaningful to them. | About Nyein: I have recently (June 2007) been qualified to graduate with BSc (Hons) Physics with Space Science degree from University College London (UCL). I will be continuing with my studies for Master's level in Applied Mathematics or Theoretical Physics and aim to follow research and teaching career. I am fluent in English, Burmese and Japanese and I also have computer programming skills. I am patient, which is most important in teaching, relaxed, flexible and friendly. |
Teaching Experience: Most of my teaching experience come from helping fellow students, teaching an adult person on a foundation course and through dropping into a few peer-assisted learning (PAL) sessions. |
Tutoring Approach: My approaching to teaching is to make students learn through examples. In doing so, students will not only gain problem-solving skills and understand the theories better, but also will be well-prepared for the exams at the same time. I believe it is very efficient way to learn and most suitable for subjects like Mathematics and Physics which you cannot remember everything but must try to understand underlying principles and must be able to apply them in different contexts. However, different students have different tastes to different teachings and I am therefore prepared to be adapt the way the student wants me to. |

During my gap year I travelled to Bavaria to spend three months at language school gaining fluency in German. I am enthusiastic about my subjects, and have always enjoyed imparting confidence and understanding to others that find these subjects difficult. |
Teaching Experience: I have no formal teaching experience, but have long practice tutoring friends and family in Maths and Science and preparing people for exams, both in one-off lessons and on a weekly basis. I have helped two friends pass maths GCSE (one on her second attempt) and a family member pass AS level Physics. During sixth form I helped out in younger year science lessons and during my time in Germany I tutored a German businessman who wanted to improve his English. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is to be entirely student centered and to focus my lessons on to students' particular needs. My patient, relaxed attitude soon puts people at ease. Even in my short experience I have been amazed how big a difference one-to-one tutoring can make to students left behind in classes of thirty or so pupils. Having only recently left the education system I have a good understanding both of the subject material and what examiners are looking for. I am well able to tutor gifted students, having passed the Ox-bridge interviews, but most of my experience has been with those who struggle, helping students to understand difficult concepts for the first time. |

| About Simonetta: I do bespoke tutoring, the pupil tells me what they need and I prepare lessons accordingly. I'm currently developing an intermediate Holiday Italian course for a pupil, so if you are interested in that course I can tailor it for you (the course is not available commercially - I have developed it). I can also help you revise if needed. I'm a native speaker, so I can also provide conversation and practice if that's what you need. |
Teaching Experience: My background is in translation/media in the UK and private tutoring of children who failed their subject or needed revision when I was living in Italy (I moved to the UK in 1994). I have started tutoring adults recently as I need to work from home due to family commitments. |
Tutoring Approach: I try to engage the student using recordings, reading and different materials. I do tailor lessons to the needs of the individual. |

| About Emma: I'm a Journalism graduate who has spent the last eight years working in a media monitoring agency in Edinburgh. I went to school in England and have 11 GCSEs and 4 A Levels. My particular areas of expertise are in reading and writing skills, English and basic French. I currently work as a writer/researcher in the oil and gas industry. |
Teaching Experience: I have spent many hours helping in primary classrooms, assisting the teacher with literacy and computer lessons. I have been frequently employed by family friends to help improve their children's reading and writing abilities. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe tutoring should be very different from a school environment. That's not to say I don't expect hard work, but I do try and make lessons fun. I often got strange looks when helping out in schools when children would start laughing during our sessions. It's like anything in life - if you enjoy it, it doesn't seem like an arduous task! |
