| About Evie: I'm in my last year at Westminster School, studing Latin, Classical Greek, History, Maths and Italian. I'm particularly keen to tutor in Classical subjects as I have been offered a place to study Classics at Clare College, Cambridge in 2009 and Classics is my speciality! I'm friendly and patient and feel that I'll be able to interact well with my tutees, especially if they're young as I went through the same experience not so long ago myself and would be able to empathise with their situation and have the maturity to help them to handle it. |
Teaching Experience: I don't have any teaching qualifications and have not tried tutoring before although I have always helped less able or younger students with their work. |
Tutoring Approach: Rigorous, thorough, committed. |

| About Keith: I am 47 years old and had a seventeen-year career as a lecturer in an engineering department of Imperial College London. There I also acted as a Senior Tutor, responsible for pastoral care, and UCAS admissions tutor. Tutoring Approach: I am a patient and experienced teacher with a creative approach based on sound methods. "Creative" means finding ways to make the abstract more concrete. Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Maria: My name is Maria Elevant. I am 22 years old and originally come from Sweden. However, as I have been brought up in England, I am bilingual. I am currently studying a Masters of Research course in Anthropology with the goal to proceed to a PHD in a few years time. My university background is in archaeology and anthropology. However, I have a great personal interest in history. I have maintained a high level of academic achievement throughout my education. Apart from studying, I have a great interest in sports and am currently undergoing training to become a part-time fitness instructor. |
Teaching Experience: Between January and June, 2007, I was employed as a History and English teacher for the International Baccalaureate Programme held at Ava gymnasium (high school) in Taby, Sweden. The main goal was to prepare the students for the final IB exams. This was done by covering the information efficiently using a combination of detailed lectures, in-class discussions, various group activities and a range of individual assignments. In order to monitor the students' intake of information, complex take-home tests and essays were the most efficient, as both aided in their initial intake of information and posed as good revision material for later tests/exams. For lectures in Modern World History, a combination of information from a variety of sources was used in order to provide a comprehensible, accurate and detailed overview of events and historical interpretations. Furthermore, I initiated a new marking system that included giving the students a mark for handing in homework on time, which helped them meet set deadlines. Simultaneously, I presented a variety of effective study and reading skills in order for them not to feel overwhelmed by the work load, and hence made them work more effectively and meet deadlines within other subjects. |
Tutoring Approach: As a Personal Tutor I would use both the material and experience that I have gained from working as a teacher. However, as the groups will be smaller, I intend to have a much more personal oriented approach. If applicable, I would wish to combine teaching study skills with the subject material, as this would provide the student/s with the necessary tools to organise their workload efficiently. I expect my students to work hard and I am firm with deadlines. However, whilst going through the information I wish to create an enjoyable atmosphere that enhances learning and interest in the subject. |

| About David: I have recently completed my MSc in Business Economics and Finance. I passed with merit. I received my Bachelors degree from Boston University School of Management in Finance with a 2.1 (equivalent). Prior to studying finance I studied Engineering and thus my strong maths skills. I also have a very strong command of the English language. I am currently working for a large energy trading firm, managing capital projects. |
Teaching Experience: I was a peer tutor in university in Calculus, Economics, Business and I led a number of lectures in Business EconomicsI have volunteered as a tutor for a little over a year teaching 7-10 years olds how to read. |
Tutoring Approach: Maths: One does not learn Maths; instead they understand it. This is the cornerstone of my approach. Once the maths 'click' in a students head, it is very hard for it to un-click. Thus, I provide an almost Socratic approach to maths, which stimulates the student to develop the answer on his/her own. |

| About Tom: I am a Chinese native speaker, and now postgraduate student in translation on the university scholarship. I was doing BA in Chinese language and literature in China before. Before I came to London, I attended the National Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Certificate Examination ( Advanced Level ), and 1 subject got 58%, thus 2 points away from highest level of Chinese-teaching certificate. I 'm optimist, fun-loving, easy-going, while serious and patient and good at making jokes in both Chinese and English :) . I'm also a versatile person. I play guitar, football, basketball, and have a good knowledge of Chinese culture and history. In addition, I write good Chinese calligraphy. And cook nice Chinese veggie dish as well. :P |
Teaching Experience: Some personal tutoring in Mandarin and guitar |
Tutoring Approach: 1. Using my versatility to make Chinese-learning easy and fun; 2. to share my experience and methods in language learning, in order to let students learn a new language more quickly. As the Chinese proverb goes:" Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."; 3. to make best use of online resources to make my teaching state-of-art; 4. to combine language learning and cultural tips. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Clemence: I am a recent graduate of English Literature and French so I have just been through the education system and I know the formula for success at each level. I did very well at A-Levels (AAB) and GCSE's with five A*s. I still love English literature and French and I feel I would communicate my enthusiasm well. I would try and get each student to love the subject and then their performance would rise accordingly. I appreciate the need to work consistently to achieve results and I would monitor student progress closely. That said, education is intellectual development and there needs to be a certain license in the progress, within the realms of achieving the next goal in the education system. I believe there can be a happy compromise between the two; working to set targets whilst allowing a love of learning to flourish. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught English as a foreign language in Tanzania at two schools. In one class of over thirty pupils, the ages ranged from 5-9 years old. In the other secondary school, I taught 16-19 year olds. The two classes required very different teaching techniques, and I had to adapt, whilst following the lesson plan and set targets, to communicate with the students effectively. |
Tutoring Approach: In order to maximize a student's potential, I would begin with a very detailed evaluation of their current status, what they need to achieve (in terms of catching up, or preparing for exams) and then build a comprehensive route over a sustained period of how we would get there. My focus would be very much on the student as an individual and I would try and create the optimum teaching method for each person. Ideally, I would like to meet with the student at least once a week to keep the information fresh. The teaching would involve as much interactive learning tools as appropriate to the student's age and abilities. For a French GCSE student , for example, I would help them not only with the core material set out for the examination but also try and inspire an understanding and enjoyment for the language through books, films, and other media. I want to challenge, excite and inspire students because I believe that academic work can be extremely enjoyable when you see your hard work paying off. |

| About Emma: I am a mature, reliable and intelligent 18 year old girl, who has just completed A Level Maths and A Level Further Maths, both at A grade. I attended City of London School for Girls, where my capacity for understanding and applying mathematics was recognised by many internal and external awards. I am now taking a gap year, and will be attending Cambridge University this autumn. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you require any further details. Many thanks, Emma Makinson |
Teaching Experience: While still at school, at the request of my teachers, I began working with younger children, mentoring and tutoring them in Mathematics. I was been hugely successful here, particularly in the case of many children who were falling behind - I helped them to generate an enthusiasm for the subject. I have also been tutoring children from 6 to 16 years old commercially for the past two years, again with huge success. Although I have usually been employed for maths tuition, I have often extended my hours to provide additional support in many other aspects of my clients' educations. In particular, I have prepared many young people for success in 11+, 13+ and sixth form entrance exams; I also have coached many for the relevant interviews. My rates are reasonable: I charge 20-30 pounds per hour (as noted), although this is calculated on the assumption that I would be travelling to a location in North or Central London. Further to the information here listed, I have also spent six months this year working in the United States. Although employed full time at a literary agency, I spent some time preparing students for SAT Reasoning tests and subjects tests in Mathematics - and have an excellent understanding of what is required for these exams. |
Tutoring Approach: I aim to build on an understanding between myself and the student, to guide them through the more challenging aspects of mathematics. I hope to develop in a student the ability to perform well by pairing a good ground knowledge of basic rules with a more conceptual approach to mathematics. |

| About Laura: I am a 24 year old qualified secondary school teacher living near Old Street in North London. I am passionate about teaching and about giving young people the best start in life, and realise the importance of achieving well in school and in examinations for young people's future. I find it very rewarding to be able to help young people achieve their full potential and enjoy their studies through successful tutoring. My interests are current affairs and the arts. I enjoy reading, visiting galleries and sites of cultural heritage and live music. I develop positive, caring relationships with the young people I teach. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked in two outstanding London secondary schools, as both an English teacher and special educational needs class teacher. I have expertise and experience in working with students with ASD, ADHD, Downs syndrome and global learning delay. I have also successfully taken disaffected and lower achieving students through the AQA GCSE course with great success. I have had experience of working with gifted and talented students, and in supporting them in achieving A and A* grades. Working in London schools I have also taught and supported learning for students for whom English is a second language. Before beginning my teaching career in the UK I worked as a voluntary English language teacher in India, where I worked to help students improve their conversational English skills and pronunciation. |
Tutoring Approach: Tutoring can be an incredible helpful tool in aiding students to achieve their academic goals, however, it has to be done well to be successful. As a qualified teacher I am aware of the different ways in which students learn and the difficulties they may face. When tutoring, the work and support I provide will be tailored to the needs of the individual, and will support them in gaining independence in achieving their own goals. |

| About Michael: Mathematics and science have played a major role in my life since I left the kindergarten. Eventually I studied mathematics, physics, computing and logic in a five-year course at the University of Leipzig. After I finished my degree, I worked for seven years as a research assistant in theoretical chemistry at the department of mathematics of University of Leipzig, and eventually completed my PhD in this field. When I moved to London I worked as post-doctoral research fellow in bioinformatics at Brunel University. I enjoy playing chess and belong to a London chess club. German is my native language and I sometimes translate articles from German to English. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked as a sessional tutor while I was at university in Leipzig, where I gave private tutorials in maths for university and secondary school students. I also worked for "Schlerhilfe" - a private school that has branches all over Germany - where I gave tutorials for small groups of pupils. |
Tutoring Approach: Logic and mathematics can be learned and practised like sports. Even if you don't believe you have natural talent, you can still learn maths. The best way to learn mathematics and physics is through exercises. In the tutorials I will introduce and explain the matter, discuss examples and give exercises for self-study in preparation for the next tutorial. In this way we can monitor progress and adapt the speed of teaching. German tutorials will be focused on speaking and listening, but will strongly depend on the needs of the student. If wished, I will also put emphasis on reading and writing skills. I will use recommended textbooks as guidelines if there are no particular requirements. While I have a general idea about how to teach, I will adopt it to individual needs and discuss my approach with the student. I am open and welcome feedback. This is a good way to find out what suits the student best and to tailor the tutorials to meet it. |

| About Danny: I am a 23 year old living near Old Street and currently working for a PR agency in Covent Garden. I graduated from Oxford University this summer with a first class degree in English Language and Literature, and will be studying for an MA in 20th Century Literature at UCL as of September. Academically I have a particular interest in modern prose but am also well read in most other periods and genres, as well as European and American literature. I have a good knowledge of critical theory, a broad general knowledge of philosophy and a grounding in modern political literature. In my spare time I enjoy listening to and performing music, and currently play guitar in a semi-professional funk band. I also enjoy writing, having edited both factual and satirical magazines, as well as traveling and socialising with friends. |
Teaching Experience: I have privately tutored English Literature to GCSE and A Level students during University holidays, as well as giving guitar lessons throughout my school career. |
Tutoring Approach: When tutoring I aim to create a relaxed and informal atmosphere and encourage tutees to offer personal responses to the texts they are studying, which I can then help to develop and put into context. I believe working directly with the text is the best way to develop a critical approach and the best way to form an argument that can be used as the basis of an essay or exam answer. Particularly in arts and humanities subjects, every pupil has their own individual approach. I believe that rather than forcing a particular style upon a tutee it is best to identify and develop their personal strengths, whilst helping to counter their weaknesses. I also offer guidance on writing style and exam and essay technique. Having completed my own education relatively recently I am well aware of the requirements of the GCSE and A Level systems, and am well placed to help tutees achieve results that match their potential. |

| About Peter: I am a 4rd year Biochemical Engineering masters student in University College London. Tutoring has always been something I enjoy and I wish to continue while pursuing my master degree. I have a good academic track record, obtaining straight A's for Maths, Chemistry and Physics in 'A' Levels and is on the track in attaining a 1st class honors in my field of study. Do not hesitate to contact me if there are any queries. Many thanks Peter |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored students at primary to GCSE levels in Maths, Science, English, Physics and Chemistry for the past few years, where all had made improvements in their grades. Last year, I have done voluntary tutoring in Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Language College. Recently, I was also a summer camp instructor in the states, teaching children canoeing and kayaking. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that having a strong foundation is important before tackling a subject in depth, especially for Maths and Sciences, thus I will start from the basics if the student's foundation is weak. I will cultivate their interest in the subject and emphasize the importance of practicing and true understanding rather than memorizing. |

In addition, at university it was a requirement for final year students to assist 1st and 2nd Year students in their coursework. |
Tutoring Approach: My general approach to tutoring is as follows: 1. Firstly assess the weak points any particular tutee may have usually by ways of a practice exam. 2. After having analysed where the weak points are, to establish with the tutee what they want to achieve and in what timescale. 3. Then a timetable will be drawn up with what areas are to be covered, establishing aims and goals that can be achieved. 4. Ongoing assessment, again typically past exam papers/questions, are performed to allow the tutee to realise where they have improved and what areas may require additional attention. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Parvaze: I am a science graduate of the University of Salford. I have worked professionally as an Environmental Health Officer for some 12 yrs plus. I enjoy reading and researching articles on science fiction. My children call me a space freak because of the endless hours spent surfing the web on 'space sites' looking up the recent cassini mission to saturn and the latest rendezvous of the various space probes with a number of asteroids such as the joint European e.g 'esa' and NASA missions. I've been further intrigued by the Japanese space probe mission to a near earth asteroid which not only safely touched down on the asteroid but was able to collect some dust from its cratered surface and safely head back to earth. Its incredible the feats and strides scientists have taken in the last 50 years and to know that I will be educating some of the scientists of tomorrow and who knows maybe an astronaut who'll look back one day at his lessons and say that's where it first started for me. |
Teaching Experience: I have some 7 yrs private/school teaching experience which I've found particularly enjoyable and rewarding. I have taught privately in my own home as well as in the clients setting. I have experience of teaching predominantly science subjects between KS2 to A2 levels. I enjoy teaching science on a one to one level and to groups of two or three. I believe tutoring on a personal level is not only enjoyable but motivates me to educate the tutee to a standard which reflects his/her interests. I find tutoring children on a personal level enables them to take in far more information which is retained by them for a much longer time span. |
Tutoring Approach: With every new student, I try to identify from the onset, their strengths and weaknesses. By focusing on their weaknesses, I try to build on them, regularly giving them tests on topics covered and giving the pupils my ideas on exam preparation and technique has proven to be an excellent way of attaining high marks in their final exams. I am aware of the parental pressures put on students to perform and do well, and I am fully capable of bringing out the best of the individuals abilities. I am a caring, friendly and sensitive tutor with a great passion for sciences particularly chemistry and physics. I am enthusiastic about teaching science and have a workable exam preparation and technique built into lessons which works exceptionally well. I also ensure any handouts given out along with course notes and test papers are properly filed in a folder. I recommend the use of flash cards as an aide me moire of the topics covered again filed in the folder along with all other notes. I recommend to those students who have access to a PC and the Internet to contact me via e-mail at no extra cost with any questions on any of the topics covered in previous lessons. I will endeavour to drop them a line with a worked example whether online or offline. I've found by doing this, that it further strengthens the bond between my students. From past testimonials I've received, its evident most of my tutees enjoy my caring and reflective style and the results speak for themselves.. |
