About Georgia:
I am currently in my fourth year of studying Medicine at University College, so still being in the throes of education myself I very much understand what it is like to be on the receiving end of teaching- both good and bad! Two years ago I graduated from a degree in Neuroscience with a high 2.1, and then took a gap year to do a ski season in the Alps before travelling around South America. I am now back in Medicine having started my clinical training.

Teaching Experience:

Although this is the first time that I have done any formalised tutoring, I have had experience. In my A-Level year I tutored GCSE students in chemistry. These were girls who just needed extra time and explanation in certain areas of the course so the sessions were mostly structured by the girls themselves, who were less worried about asking me about the areas they did not understand, than asking a teacher. All of the subjects that I am offering to teach are subjects that I got an A* grade in at GCSE and a high A grade in at A-Level.

Tutoring Approach:

I sat my GCSEs 7 years ago, and (although suddenly that sounds like ages) I can vividly remember what they were like -i.e. not very pleasant at all- so I am aware of the demands of the current syllabuses on pupils. I have no formal teaching qualifications so I am very eager to tailor my sessions to the pupil's and the parents' requirements. I think it is important for the tutoring sessions to be structured, but also relaxed and unintimidating enough that the pupil feels able to voice any problems that they may be having. I am very flexible with my time so don't worry about any hectic schedules!

About Yiwei:
My name is Jimmy Mao, I graduated Imperial College London's maths department in 2007 and now live near Kentish Town.
I am fluent in Mandarin Chinese and regularly visit my parents who live in Beijing, though I was brought up in Britain.

For my hobbies, I read voraciously and enjoy debating. In addition to this I really love cycling and in-fact cycle the 10 miles to and from Peckham, where I work everyday.

Teaching Experience:

I am an NQT year teacher teaching Mathematics at St Thomas the Apostle College as part of the TeachFirst scheme. My experience includes a wide range of abilities from foundation support sets to currently teaching the Fast-track year 11s Additional Maths and A-level modules.

I have experience with teaching to a broad range of learning disabilities including autism, hearing difficulties and attention deficit disorders.

I have had tutoring experience in the past and have mentored many pupils within schools during my University career.

Tutoring Approach:

Initially I would try to gauge the level of the pupil and then devise a plan according to the level descriptors and national strategy in how best to attain (and surpass) their targets.

In subsequent sessions the first part will be a relatively quick consultation time where issues with class and homework are discussed. Afterwards we will work on some of the areas identified that the pupil needs extra help on. Finally to conclude each session a plenary/review of what we have learned this sessions and targets for next session are set.

Depending on the regularity of the sessions, every few sessions we would review our progress towards our final goal and evaluate whether previously defined issues have been met and whether or not new areas of study have arisen. I would expect the pupil to have made some agreed preparation work prior to each tutoring session.

About Martha:
I am a motivated and energetic self-starter with an excellent academic record. I enjoy travelling, volunteering and working with others, including young people. I love my subjects, and would relish a teaching job of this kind.

Teaching Experience:

I have informally tutored my neighbours for their 11+ exams. Other than this, working with young disabled adults for K.E.E.N. I have learnt to remain calm in difficult situations, and moreover to communicate in an imaginative way.

Tutoring Approach:

The tutorial system at Oxford has greatly influenced my way of learning, and through this I have gained a valuable insight into how to learn, how to teach others, and how to present information. In my History degree I have developed the ability to take in and to analyse large volumes of information, and to present them in a clear, accurate and concise manner. I believe that my performance in my preliminary examinations demonstrates that I can do this well. I am passionate about my subject(s), and am eager to help instil that passion in others.

About Caroline:
I have a PhD in Astrophysics from the University of Oxford. Before that, I completed a six year MSc course in Physics & Astronomy at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands. Currently I am working as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of London.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught many different types of people over a variety of subjects. For example, I have experience in tutoring Physics students (both full-time and mature) at degree level in Physics, Astrophysics, and various software packages (Matlab, Mathematica, IDL, Excel). I've taught children from the age of 7 upwards in Astrophysics. Furthermore, for years I have taught adults of the age of 50+ the very basics of using a personal computer, including using email and internet, and software packages such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).

Tutoring Approach:

I am an extremely patient and considerate tutor, adept at communicating with people of all ages.

For A-level and degree level students, I begin by identifying areas of weakness and developing a strategy and a sequence of lesson plans that are matched to the student's needs. I work with the pupil to set realistic and swift targets for improvement. My tuition allows for immediate, positive and corrective feedback to help the pupil quickly improve and permanently stay on track. I can also help with coursework and preparation for forthcoming examinations.

For casual learners in IT, I can visit their homes to work with them on their own computer. I can guide them from the very basics to advanced concepts such as creating computational spreadsheets in Excel, or the principles of programming. Lesson plans will be formed in communication with the student, and completely adapted to their needs and wishes.

About Laura:
I am a 24 year old qualified secondary school teacher living near Old Street in North London.

I am passionate about teaching and about giving young people the best start in life, and realise the importance of achieving well in school and in examinations for young people's future. I find it very rewarding to be able to help young people achieve their full potential and enjoy their studies through successful tutoring.

My interests are current affairs and the arts. I enjoy reading, visiting galleries and sites of cultural heritage and live music. I develop positive, caring relationships with the young people I teach.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked in two outstanding London secondary schools, as both an English teacher and special educational needs class teacher.

I have expertise and experience in working with students with ASD, ADHD, Downs syndrome and global learning delay. I have also successfully taken disaffected and lower achieving students through the AQA GCSE course with great success. I have had experience of working with gifted and talented students, and in supporting them in achieving A and A* grades. Before beginning my teaching career in the UK I worked as a voluntary English language teacher in India, where I worked to help students improve their conversational English skills and pronunciation.

As a qualified teacher I am aware of the different ways in which students learn and the difficulties they may face. About Claire:
I am a 22 year old female graduate from the University of York where I studied for a degree in Psychology, gaining a grade of 2:1 overall. I have recently completed a PGCE in primary education at York St. John University, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and my love of working with children has led to my involvement with many volunteering organisations whilst completing my degree and PGCE in the last four years. I have played a vital role whilst helping at a local Girlguiding 'Rainbows' unit and regularly attending a charity's play mornings, as well as volunteering as a teaching assistant in local primary schools.

Teaching Experience:

I have just completed my PGCE in primary education at York St. John University, during which I successfully completed two intensive placements as well as four shorter placements. On my final practice I achieved the highest pass mark of "very good". I have gained experience in a number of different schools during the course, with one of my main placements being in an urban school and the other in a rural village school. I feel that this has given me great insight into the diversity of children's needs and has fully prepared me for adapting my teaching to suit a particular child. During the PGCE I was praised for my ability in teaching all areas of the primary curriculum so feel that I am able to tutor children of this age in any subject. I am also offering tutoring in Mathematics for children aged 11 - 14 because I have an A-level in Mathematics (Grade A) and also spent three works successfully working as a teaching assistant in a Mathematics department of a secondary school as part of the 'Students Associate Scheme'.

Tutoring Approach:

My main aim in becoming a tutor is to help children to achieve their full potential. I will assess the needs of the individual child and prepare resources and lessons in order to meet these needs and take their learning forward. I hope that tutoring will be rewarding for both myself and the child because the individual focus of the learning will result in a substantial level of progress over time. I am very flexible according to the hours I will work and where I can work.

Teaching Experience:

I currently work as a supply teacher at various schools.

Tutoring Approach:

As a tutor, I have a kind, calm, open and relaxed style of teaching. After providing the initial information needed, the teaching that I do will be practically based, going through questions whilst I supervise, as I believe that the key to learning is through regular practice. As the students come across difficulties, that is when I tend to step in and provide help. This is however open to suggestion, as my style will be adapted to the student's personality.

About joanna:
I am currently a university student in my second year at Kings College London where i am studying Modern Languages specifically French and Spanish. I am of both Greek and Latin American origin and therefore am a native speaker in both Greek and Spanish and of course English. i love to travel and all things cultural.

Teaching Experience:

i have taught children of various ages in a private Greek school in totteridge lane as a classroom assistant and worked with children in small groups of up to 5 children, as well as having taught classes of up to 20 children when a teacher was unavailable. At the school I had the opportunity to teach pupils with Special Educational Needs as well as gifted ones and I am therefore aware of their need for differentiation through support and extension activities provided when delivering lessons.
I have also tutored private lessons during the summer to various children in Spanish and Greek who wished to catch up on work they fell behind with.
Also, for my third year of university i have obtained a work placement in a school in France to work as an assistant teacher during the school year 2008-2009

Tutoring Approach:

I prioritize in giving individual attention to my students and to know exactly on what level they are. I am very flexible and patient and can adapt according to the needs of the student, but try to make learning varied and interesting. I prefer to to conduct the lessons in the spoken language that way the student will become more familiar and fluent with the language.
