About Felicity:
I am currently studying law at the University of Edinburgh as an undergraduate. I attended several different schools and so was exposed to many different types of teaching. I have been in both English and Scottish systems, although all of my examinations were taken in the Scottish system.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience includes a considerable amount of time spent mentoring and teaching younger pupils french during my final year at school, both as full classes, small groups and individuals. Primarily I dealt with first and second year pupils although I do have experience of providing assistance to pupils up to standard grade level. I believe that the skills used across the age groups I have taught before transfer easily and effectively to other age groups.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is that each child learns in a different way and hence dependant on the child the style in which to tutor them varies greatly.

However, I am a great believer in positive reinforcement and patience. In many cases encouragement and presenting information in a slightly different manner works miracles, enabling the child to suddenly see the connections as well as providing them with a valuable tool which can in future help them to work out difficulties themselves by employing similar techniques.

Even if the child has real difficulty with a specific area then simply being creative in the way you explain the material can make a difference. For example, appealing to all of their senses and capturing their full attention. Getting them involved with the process is key. Most importantly, however, is to try and make things fun and keep the atmosphere light and as pressure-free as possible, allowing them to process information and reach a conclusion with stress.

About Matthew:
I am an experienced tutor, IT technician, musician and event organizer offering my acquired skills to any age group who may require further clarity. Currently studying of my own volition towards further recognized qualifications in IT, Technology and Music as well as writing a guitar method which favors creating music rather than pure technique (although technique is obviously included).
I regularly volunteer time organizing and promoting local music events as well as being a local on-call Sound Technician and IT Support Officer.

Teaching Experience:

Peripatetic Music Tuition
Since Nov 2004 I have been teaching electric and acoustic guitar in one to one or group lessons from hired teaching rooms in the Academy of Music and Sound, a national educational establishment in central Exeter.
Duties include:

Writing the vast majority of the teaching materials (,after covering the basics almost every student has a tailored curriculum dependant on their musical taste).
Tutoring students through Contemporary Grade 1 - 8 exams.

My students have ranged in age from 8 to 62 years old. In addition it is a wonderful role to serve as an outlet for creativity and is distinctly rewarding when a student grasps a topic with enthusiasm, whether it be their favourite song or a new technique.
Upon moving house in November 2006 I began teaching from home instead to avoid the Exeter commute and the overheads of room rental.

Singer and Performance Development Teacher

September 2006 I was asked to work one afternoon a week singing for the Academy Of Music and Sound's student performances as well as advising them on stagecraft, performance and instrument technique. The following term the Academy's singing course began and hence the course's singers filled the role as part of their studies.

I have also tutored individuals in the workplace in the use of Microsoft Office applications and Music Software such as Cubase SX and Propellerhead's Reason.

Having attained an A grade at Electronics A-level and also currently studying towards a BSc(Hons) in Technology with The Open University as well as MCSE status with Microsoft.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a structured approach to the basics of all subjects available for tuition but once attained (for example in teaching the guitar,) most students require a tempered and tailored approach depending on their most comfortable form of learning as well as the topics of most interest and relevance.
A science academic, dedicated musician and disciplined teacher I provide a service which promotes the development of skill-sets mostly without the students awareness of the degree of depth attained. Creating a comfortable atmosphere is also paramount as very few people learn best in a stressed environment.

About Ashleigh:
I am a qualified teacher with 15 years experience in Primary schools and as a private tutor offering individual lessons for children who need extra support with basic literacy. I use a range of personally tailored strategies, with a realistic phonetic approach to reading and and writing that doesn't over-simplify the English language yet gives children the understanding they need to make progress at all levels both in and out of school. I can to help them to enjoy and take control of their own learning, encouraging success through a structure of clear building blocks, without being afraid to look at mistakes and put them right. I also offer individual DRUM KIT tuition, MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MAKING and playing workshops, NURSERY CLASS MUSIC sessions, one-to-one INTERACTIVE MUSIC for adults with learning disabilities and BASIC MATHEMATICS tuition - please contact me for more information.

Teaching Experience:

After taking my degree I worked for 6 years as a Learning Support Assistant, specialising in helping children of all abilities who had missed out on learning to read in the school system. I worked with children who had 'slipped through the net' and become frustrated and negative for many different reasons, often from lack of continuity in teaching, through not having their work properly corrected or because of special needs that had not been addressed. I went on to take a Postgraduate Certificate of Education at Goldsmiths College, London, and since then have worked as a part-time visiting tutor as well as following my career as a professional musician.

Tutoring Approach:

I start with an assessment session, using word lists and graded texts to discover a child's present level of reading ability. With younger children I make an alphabet chart with word and pictures. They think of the words to use and we talk about the different sounds that the letters can make. We look at the difference between the vowels: a - e - i - o - u (and y) and the consonants, and at how sounds can be blended together, not forgetting that some words do not obey the 'rules'. I move on to a set of games and books to give practice at finding and remembering these sounds and patterns in words, and then we use them to write sentences which we cut up and rearrange to practice and reinforce both reading and writing skills. In this way the children are given challenges that they can succeed at, in stages of growing difficulty and at their own pace. Punctuation and grammar are introduced, as they are needed, to make the meaning clearer to the reader. I always aim to answer a child's questions and encourage them to use their curiosity.

About Matthew:
I am a 26 year old newly qualified teacher who has just moved back to the Nottinghamshire area with my family upon the successful completion of my BAEd[Hons] degree in Primary Education and English. The university course has allowed me the opportunity to meet and facilitate the learning of a great number of children, and I have experience of teaching all subjects at primary level [ages 5-11]. I am a fun, enthusiastic teacher and I aim to make my lessons as engaging and relevant as possible at all times. I have a particular passion for the teaching of english [both literature and language] and have a wide knowledge of different phonic and reading programmes.

Teaching Experience:

During the university course I was able to spend forty-four weeks in a variety of primary schools, this experience spread across the four years of the BAEd. These schools catered to many diverse children who had a range of different needs and levels of ability, and I was given the opportunity to teach whole classes and year groups during this time. Upon the completion of my final year teaching practise I was offered further employment by my host school, who have employed me for the last six months as a floating supply teacher working in all their classes from reception through to year 6.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that I am an open and friendly teacher who aims to place the student and their needs at the centre of the learning experience. By assessing the needs of the individual child I am able to then tailor a curriculum or series of lessons which best matches their learning needs. I find that I can relate well to the children in my tutelage, and often tailor lessons to include topics or areas that they may have a pronounced interest in - this often helps the children to engage more readily with a subject and can improve their results on the whole.
