Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Austen: I am a charismatic cell biologist with a genuine passion for the sciences. Professionally, I work as a post-doctoral research assistant in a large teaching hospital. My project aim is to find new ways to combat age related macular degeneration (ARMD)- one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness in the developed world. I am a published author, and when I lecture, I make my own stunning powerpoint presentations. I have a photographic memory (most scientists do). You must develop that also if you are going to achieve a good understanding of elaborate scientific concepts. I am an excellent communicator and I teach by coaching. |
Teaching Experience: I have been tutoring GCSE / A-level students in the sciences for over 6 years now. I have also assisted a number of university graduates with their dissertations (BSc, and MSc level). Further, I have experience in supervising PhD students in the department where I work. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to teaching draws from my experience that students at GCSE level and above invariably need to be coached on HOW to tackle the subject matter with a genuine enthusiasm in order to succeed and achieve their academic potential. Obviously, I am able to explicate specific elements and complex concepts to the student in a simple and logical manner, using visual aids wherever possible. But that is the remit of most tutors. My intuitive approach to teaching students aims to surpasses that important threshold. My students will be invited to review their position with regard to their study routine. From this vantage point, we will together develop a strategic plan to deal with short and long term objectives. This approach will put the student in control of heir study goals. The student will thus learn how to MANAGE their resources and time. With regards to revision/study groups, my approach is simple: 1- Determine exact nature of study aims (and time frame). 2- Construct a curriculum-based study guide for the students relating to the subject matter at hand. 3- Explain the material in the sequence established in (2). 4- Revise fundamental elements highlighted in (3). 5- Assess the knowledge of the student conceptually with emphasis on specific elements included in (4). 6- Address any requests for further explanation as they arise. |

| About Jason: I graduated from Nottingham University with a 1st class degree in History. I live in Hammersmith but have a car and am willing to travel to tutor. Outside of work I am a keen sportsman and regularly play football and cricket. |
Teaching Experience: I qualified as an 'outstanding' teacher in 2006 and have taught a range of abilities and different learning styles. I'm particularly skilled in pupil level intervention at the highest and lower levels, specifically on increasing student outcomes. I am currently a Lead Teacher in History and therefore have an excellent knowledge of examination requirements and what is required to achieve success. |
Tutoring Approach: Tutoring has to be enjoyable otherwise a student's potential won't be realised! I will always try and make any session as appropriate for an individual student's needs as possible, and always try and teach knowledge and skills (exams answers, essay structure and source analysis) alongside one another. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Edward: I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a first class honours degree in Mathematics and then studied for a Masters at The University of Manchester. Since then I have taught English as a foreign language and have now been teaching mathematics for 3 years. I currently have two other tutees; one studying for intermediate GCSE, the other for a masters in financial mathematics. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught primary level in Edinburgh schools as part of a work experience placement whilst at university. I then taught first and second year degree mathematics whilst studying for my masters degree in Manchester. I am now the A-Level mathematics coordinator at my school, Cranford Community College in Hounslow, London. |
Tutoring Approach: As I have resources for both the AQA and Edexcel exam boards I prefer to provide these to the student before the actual tutoring hour; the tutee can then work through these questions so we can identify the areas to improve upon. This service is also available for 11-14 year olds and A-Level mathematics. Unfortunately I cannot provide this for degree level, you would need to bring your own resources. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Nick: I am a fourth year student at Imperial College London university studying medicine. I enjoy playing sports to compliment my academic life and helping others in all activities that I am involved in. |
Teaching Experience: Have informally taught Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics to fellow students to A-Level standard throughout my academic career. Am also part of a scheme in the university to help the younger medics learn and cope with the immense workload that a medical degree involves! Being a student myself, it was not very long ago I was doing GCSE's and A-Levels and so totally understand how to go about tackling a subject and making sure one is as confident as one can be walking into an exam. Have been tutoring for 1 year now and boosted several student's GCSE and A-Level grades earlier this year. |
Tutoring Approach: Before we begin working together, I firstly get an idea of the particular areas the tutee feels they need to work on and is worried about. I believe it's important to understand key concepts when tackling a subject and so will get an idea of where the tutee is having problems and get them on the right track to improving and getting a top grade. I am great at talking to children and teenagers and try to make lessons fun and involving! Closer to exam time, I make sure to go through the marking scheme and ensure the tutee has an extensive yet realistic revision plan. |

Types of Tutoring: From their home / Online
| About Frances: I have a degree in education and I have been tutoring (mainly for 11+) for the past 6 years. These sessions are very rewarding as you get to know the children's way of thinking really well. I have had very good success with 11+, with an average of 90% of my pupils gaining selective school entrance. |
Teaching Experience: I qualified with a degree in South Africa, and came to England 6 years ago to learn more about the English way of teaching. I have taught in both private and government schools. In the private schools the focus was mainly on passing 11+. I enjoy primary school aged children, and I have always achieved really good results with them. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe children must have fun when learning. If they are not having fun they will not look forward to it, and they will not retain as much. It is important that children have a relaxed and comfortable environment in which to learn. I have a specially designed study for this purpose, and all children have loved coming here. |

I also teach English language and literature privately and have been a GCSE English examiner for the OCR examining board since 2004. I have been able to keep up my EFL teaching on-line and regularly teach a small number of EFL students on a weekly basis. |
Tutoring Approach: I strive to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in my tuition sessions. I work closely with every student to come up with a personal learning plan to ensure they get the most out of each lesson. To that end, I travel to your home, as I have found that students work better in familiar surroundings with all necessary materials close at hand. I usually work for on an hourly basis, for at least one hour a week, but I have conducted two hour sessions where necessary. Travel expenses are included within my hourly rate, so there will never be any additional costs to incur. | About Zahid: I am 39 years old with two children aged 9 and 11 years. I taught 5 years in Bradford before moving to peterborough in 1998. I play cricket at club level and also in the powerleague 5 a-side football. I was Bradford 'Open ' chess champion in 1985 but I only play on a casual basis now. I have helped to run education centres in Bradford and peterborough after school and on a Saturday. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching since 1992. I have extensive experience of teaching in different types of schools as a mainstream teacher as well as Head of Science. During the last year I have worked as a Science Consultant for a local authority working with staff and students. during the last 5 years I have been a GCSE exam marker and therefore I am very familiar with the requirements in order to achieve marks in external exams. |
Tutoring Approach: During the last 10 years I have seen how easy it is for young people to get distracted from academic studies due to the vast array of gadgets that they just have to play with. Tuition is about finding that mental block that is preventing learning and understanding from taking place. I try to give concepts and subject knowledge a reality that students can understand by giving analogies and models that they are more familiar with. |

| About Simone: I am reliable, sociable, hard working, enterprising, creative and full of enthusiasm. I have had a wide range of work experiences which has given me many useful transferable skills. My strengths lie in mathematics, statistics, quantitative analytics and computing. I am very organised in my approach to work, and focus well on priority tasks. I also try to be as innovative as possible in order to find the best and most efficient ways to meet targets. As a result of this approach I work well under pressure. In my instructor roles, I have also realised the importance of team work in achieving goals and of patience, support and communication in managing and building working relationships. I am passionate about sport and dance, and have been participating in sports since the age of 6. During this time I have been a semi-professional footballer in Italy. I completed a bachelor's degree in Naval Engineering in 2005 from the University of Trieste, and have completed a Masters in Naval Architecture at the same University in June 2008. |
Teaching Experience: During my studies, I have been working as a Italian, Maths and dance instructor and so have many experiences of inspiring and teaching students. I have worked also as a customer services assistant and secretary in a building firm in Italy. - Winter 2008 Maths tutor - Winter 2007/08 Dance instructor in the "Studio Dance" Salsa Portorico Style, Merengue, Bachata - Summer 2007 Dance instructor (Nottingham) Salsa Portorico Style, Salsa Footwork - Summer 2007 Italian tutor (Nottingham) - 2006 Dance instructor Salsa Cuban Style, Merengue, Bachata - 2006 Maths tutor |
Tutoring Approach: From my experience as a Italian tutor, when somebody learn a new language is like a child, the easy way is the best. Examples with practical lessons are very important for vocabulary skills, interesting subjects for reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, while for the grammar a lot of exercises. From my experience as a Maths tutor I have learnt to stimolate students and help them to belive in theirself. Many of them needed just this. I tried to understand what is important and enjoyable for the student and I made some examples in comparison with the focus of the lesson. Everybody think different so is very important to understand quickly who is the person. I always tried to be funny because Maths usually is boring. From my experience as a dance instructor I have learnt to be professional. I worked with a diverse range of people in terms age gender and race and I have learnt to give constructive criticisms in sensitive situations. |

I have tutored from GCSE Level right up to undergraduate degree level with enormous success. |
Tutoring Approach: Learner's Needs Come First! Having worked with Fleet Tutors (previously Anysubject) I found myself extremely dedicated to delivering high quality study support, and pride myself on simply spending as much time as necessary on the material - both in terms of preparation and delivery. In the past when a student has been struggling with the scheme of work I draft, I'm more than happy to compromise to better cater to the needs of the learner. I don't count minutes - I'm extremely motivated and task orientated and take pride in my work. I appreciate and accommodate different learners' abilities and styles, and embrace all learning and education in the broadest sense with enthusiasm. | About Ben: Besides tutoring, I have been employed as an academic researcher at the University of Cambridge, where I studied Mathematics as an undergraduate. I have subsequently worked on funded scientific research at the University of Reading. I enjoy a wide range of intellectual and other interests, including philosophy, language studies and tennis. I am currently training to teach adult literacy classes at the University of Bolton. |
Teaching Experience: I began tutoring in Mathematics and Physics six years ago and have been preparing students for Common Entrance, GCSE and A Level exams on a part-time and occasional basis since then. I was contracted as a tutor with the University of Cranfield in 2003 and I have studied on professional teacher training courses at the University of Warwick (1999) and the University of Bolton (2007/8). |
Tutoring Approach: Mathematics requires inventive and creative thinking as well as a sense of logic. I encourage each of my tutees to understand things in his or her own way, whilst also insisting on clear methods of presentation and an appreciation of the logical accuracy which is an essential part of the subject. I aim to examine the fundamentals of the subject with the learner in an enjoyable and interesting way. This has consistently produced excellent results, both in terms of grades and learners' confidence and wider understanding. |

| About Ghufran: I am 28 years old, working full time as Head of ICT at a local secondary school. I have over 7 years teaching experience and have degree in European Politics and IT. In addition, I have a PGCE in ICT and am currently studying towards a MA in Education Leadership. My interests include travel, football and music. As a father of 2 daughters, I am eager to spend as much of my spare time with them as I am a very 'family-oriented' person. I am a Muslim, non-smoker and do not drink. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught at various schools in Birmingham and have over 7 years teaching experience. I have worked as KS3 coordinator for my subject (ICT), deputy subject leader, assistant head of year and currently I am Head of ICT department (all within secondary schools). I have experience of GCSEs, GNVQs, BTECs and DIDA qualifications. I have also taught adult education (TEFL) and have taught Urdu to younger children. In addition to my Bsc in European Politics and IT, I have a PGCE qualification in secondary education and I am currently studying for a MA in Educational Leadership. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring includes a range of strategies. Each pupils is different and unique and therefore a tailored tutoring approach is needed. My initial approach is always a baseline assessment of the pupil's starting level and needs, therefore allowing the establishment of realistic targets for achievement. I always aim to establish excellent relationships with my pupils as I believe this is the key to maximising achievement. I consider myself to be a caring and motivating tutor and as a father of 2 children, I understand the importance of teaching younger pupils 'life skills' in addition to the academic and subject specific skills. |

| About Ross: I am a part time tutor in the South West London area, available for evening and weekend appointments. I teach French to A level, I studied French at Lincoln University and the Universit de Savoie and lived in France for a total of two years. I also studied German at Sheffield Hallam University and Giessen Universitaet, and teach German to GCSE and sometimes AS level. |
Teaching Experience: I hold a PGCE in post compulsory education from the University of Greenwich and a TESOL teaching certificate from St Giles college. I have also lectured in tourism at Westminster Kingsway College. |
Tutoring Approach: I am very much an advocate of the diagnostic approach to learning and will adapt my teaching to suit the student. Some students may find that the 'total immersion' approach to language learning helps, even in the early stages. Lessons will be equally between conversation, grammar, listening and reading practice. Homework can be set depending on the time constraints of the tutee. |

| About Jichen: I'm a Chinese and I'm friendly and enthusiastic towards my work. I'm also a patient person, since my work is mainly to do with children of 12-18 years old. I can work with a very positive attitude and can always be helpful. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching English in China for 4 years, and then Chinese in UK for 2 years. I majored in English education when I was in university, which enable me to have a profound knowledge of teaching. I taught students of A-level last year as well as evening class for adults, and this year I'm teaching GCSE Chinese. So I believe that I'm experienced in teaching both Chinese and English. |
Tutoring Approach: Since I've been teaching students of different ages and levels, I fully understand that I should choose different methods and teaching materials for them. But it's always important to activate students enthusiasm towards learning. So group work, pair work, individual competition as well as the media like ppt will be used in my class. Also I'd like to choose varieties of teaching materials such as flash cards and pictures to help. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Akintola Idris: I am currently a second year Engineering student at Imperial College London averaging over 80% and a top three student in my year. I am a young enthusiastic individual who always wants to achieve my best. I am quite funny (with silly science jokes at times), interesting and love to be around people. I am a sport fanatic and watch and participate in most sports except water sports. I am caring and helpful to people around me. |
Teaching Experience: I have various teaching experience both at A-level and GCSE. While studying my GCSE, I was made a mentor to junior students and we organised weekly classes whereby myself and other mentors help out junior students with their maths and science. This helped develop my interest in teaching. And during my A-level, I was part of a Peer Tutoring scheme. In my first year, I had to deliver maths lecture weekly in a local Secondary School (Oakland secondary school) in Tower Hamlets. The scheme really worked well as some of the students eventually took the Higher paper in GCSE maths and excelled. In my second year on the scheme, I helped out first year A-level students in Maths, chemistry and Physics. It was later extended for me to help colleagues (second year A-level students) who are weak or having difficulties in the same subjects. This experience helped to to understand various teaching methods and ways of approaching questions to match various people's understanding. During my first year in university, I tutored up to seven GCSE and A-level students in both maths and physics. Some of my students particularly the A-level students have now gained entry into universities after achieving good grades. |
Tutoring Approach: Effective tutoring should always involve the student. For teaching to be effective the student has to participate so my method of tutoring always involve the student as much as possible. Understanding and Exam-focused is something that has to be emphasised on. I try as much as possible to help the student understand the basic concept of the course and then relate it to exam and real life situations. I also have past papers which I go through with students to enhance their exam techniques. |

Tutoring Approach: I love to help children learn and help to build their confidence. I think independent learning is good, but also to give encouragement and to listen to children's needs. I am patient and also believe in making learning fun, so with environmental things, hands on is sometimes best, but of course taking full notice of health and safety. I also believe visualisation and creativity are good means of teaching. Visual tools such as maps, audio-visual displays etc can be very effective teaching aids. Also allowing children to develop their imaginations and artistic skills through painting, writing and construction are key. |
