Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Camilla: I am an enthusiastic, friendly person, and I am passionate about helping students to fulfil their potential. I graduated from the University of Durham two years ago and have since gained Qualified Teacher Status on the Teach First program. As a teacher I understand the importance of not only helping students to develop the skills they need to achieve their goals, but also to assist them in believing in their own abilities. Outside of school I enjoy reading and sport. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently in my second year of teaching Humanities ( Geography, History and Religious Studies) at Capital City Academy. I teach pupils at KS3 and GCSE. At GCSE my Religious Studies students achieved the highest percentage of A* to C Grades in the school at 93%. Prior to this I spent time in Peru teaching English. |
Tutoring Approach: For students to learn successfully it is vital for them to feel comfortable in their learning environment. To achieve this there needs to be a positive relationship between tutor and pupil, one that is based on trust and mutual understanding. Clear objectives need to be set and strategies to achieve these need to be put in place. Most importantly learning must be fun and challenging. |

| About Caroline: My name is Caroline, I am 55 years old and have four adult children. My father was french so as a child I spent all my summers in France which I adored and still get homesick for. Teaching Experience: I have tutored both children and adults, have run holiday french clubs for children and also taught at primary schools as a replacement teacher. |

| About Emma: I am a reliable, intelligent and patient 17 year old, who has just passed AS level French at a high A grade and is predicted likewise for A2 levels. I attend Uppingham School and hope to pursue my interests next year by studying French, Italian and Spanish at university. I would be happy to help students from primary school up to GCSE level in French language. Should you wish to ask further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, Emma Brewer |
Teaching Experience: I have had previous experience of mentoring and tutoring students younger than myself who were struggling to keep up at school, but who have now progressed with more confidence and understanding of the subject. |
Tutoring Approach: The most important issue, in my opinion, is creating a keen interest in the French language and culture, which will encourage the student to want to progress in their studies for themselves, as well as to pass tests and exams with the highest mark possible. I understand that often a one-on-one session can do a world of good with problems overlooked in a classroom situation and I aim to encourage tutees, increasing confidence and achievement equally. |

| About Reza: I am a 19 year old student and I am currently in my 2nd year of studying medicine at King's College London. I am a keen sportsman and I play for my university's football team. I also enjoy tennis, swimming and going to the gym. I am a person who knows the value of education, which is why I always encourage others to take their studies seriously. I take great satisfaction everytime I help my fellow students with their studies. Finally, living in a multicultural city, I thoroughly enjoy interacting with people of all cultures and backgrounds. |
Teaching Experience: Before going to university, I voluntarily tutored year 9 and GCSE students at school. I found this very enjoyable as I felt I was making a difference in other people's education. I am currently mentoring year 1 medical students who are unfamiliar with university education. |
Tutoring Approach: Having been taught by excellent teachers, I will use many of their techniques in my tutoring approach. Having recently been through most of these exams myself, I will know the strategies that will help my tutees feel confident about answering exam questions. I am also a very patient person, which is a very useful attribute since some students can take a while to understand certain concepts. |

View Catherine's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Catherine: I am a 21-year-old student with one year left of my Biology Degree. Obviously all students are looking for ways to supplement the student loan, but I think tutoring is a perfect way to get to interact with local school students and at the same time use my degree to do something useful. My spare time is spread between housemate bonding time (watching Neighbours/Grand Designs) and trying to find interesting things do do with my life (Manchester Art Gallery, Cornerhouse Cinema, Volunteering etc). I have picked a number out of the air in terms of hourly rate, I really don't want to overcharge anyone but have no idea of the going rate! Obviously if the tutee didn't think I was very good and didn't learn anything then I wouldn't feel comfortable charging anything! References available from people I have babysat for, but none for tutoring. |
Teaching Experience: I have no formal teaching qualifications, but have had some informal experience. On my gap year (2006) I taught for 6 months at a primary school in Tanzania. Granted, a very different situation to private tutoring, but I definitely learned a lot. There were some lessons that failed miserably but some that were a massive success, so my teaching skills definitely improved. Other than that, I've done the usual homework help while I've been babysitting, which I try to make as fun as possible. |
Tutoring Approach: I firmly believe that anything can be interesting if the person teaching you is passionate about it. I also believe that if you find something interesting it's a lot easier to understand and do well in. My approach to tutoring revolves around this philosophy, and incorporates as many different learning styles as possible - visual, auditory. Biology is relevant to almost everything, and when you realise just how much of the world around you it can help to explain, that's when you begin to appreciate the subject. |

| About Sima: I was born, raised and educated in Mauritius. I have a relaxing approach to life and this includes my tutoring style. I enjoy teaching French as this is both theraputic & pleasurable. Being a past tutee of private tuition classes and now a housewife, I understand the importance, value and role the tutor plays in the development of a student. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored my sister, her friends and family members between the ages of 11-16. I have been giving private tuition in the U.K. for the past 2 years. |
Tutoring Approach: 1. Ask the tutee's purpose of the requirement for a tutor. 2. Assess the knowledge of the tutee. This could be either in writing or oral. 3. Based on the tutee's level, I tailor a specific program to achieve the tutee's goal. 4. I set homework after each class which has to be completed by the next session. 5. The homework is reviewed at the beginnning of the next session. 6. To determine the progress of the tutee, I set an exam-style test after 4 sessions (or depending on the number of classes). This is composed of both written and oral. 7. Discuss the results of the exam and adjust the "goal posts" as necessary. 8. Test again 4 sessions later. |

| About Junejo: I am currently doing my Phd in Mechnical Engineering at Loughborough University. My research area is related to computer assisted orthopaedic surgery. |
Teaching Experience: During my Bachelor and Masters I used to teach A-Level students in subjects such as Maths, Geography, Economics. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is to try to allow the students to do as much of the work as they possibly can by themselves and I coach them along and do my best to smooth over the rough spots. As in my view ideal tutors must be activators rather than facilitators. Activators cause active student learning by motivating and leading students with appropriate, open-ended questions. I do not have a "method" or "strategy" for tutoring because each student is an individual. |

| About Emma: I have just graduated from Southampton University where I studied German up to 4th year undergraduate level as part of my Music degree. In October 2007 I will start the MRes course in German Studies at Exeter University. Since 1998 I have spent extended periods of time in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, including working as an au pair for a family with small children. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked with two GCSE students providing extra support to augment their lessons in school. I have several years' worth of childcare experience, and I also undertook a tandem language exchange while at university. I have learned several languages through a variety of formats, and so experienced some of the different ways in which languages can be learned. |
Tutoring Approach: I try to adapt to the tutee's individual needs and wishes, working on what s/he feels would be most helpful and involving him/her in planning how and what to learn. I like the flexibility of one-to-one tuition, especially as this enables me to work at the pace of the tutee, concentrating on more difficult areas or simply reducing pressure to build up confidence. Above all, I aim to create a relaxed atmosphere in which the tutee feels happy about trying new things without fear of making mistakes. |
