Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Zena: I graduated from the University of Cambridge with a BA (Hons) in Natural Sciences in 2005 (2.1). I have completed the Graduate Diploma in Law (2007) and the Legal Practice Course (2008) from the College of Law, both with Distinction. |
Teaching Experience: During my gap year, after graduation, I tutored students one-to-one in 'A' Level Physics and Chemistry. Both my students received 'A' grades. More recently, I tutored a student AS Chemistry for her recent exams. |
Tutoring Approach: I firstly ensure my students understand the basics, and wherever possible try to develop their interest in the subject by taking them beyond the syllabus. I believe it is important to understand how concepts tie in with each other, and to see the 'bigger picture', which is invaluable for students taking their subjects onto a higher level. At the same time, it is of course important to understand the importance of achieving high marks in the final exams. So, to this end, I focus heavily on past papers of the relevant exam board, and scrutinise sample mark schemes with the students, so that they can see how the examiners will award them marks. |

Teaching Experience: I have no formal teaching experience but I am tutoring A-levels mathematics and physics to students for last 6 months |
Tutoring Approach: I am very patient, committed and aim to provide a relaxed atmosphere for students in which they can feel confident and i think these skills make me ideal for tutoring. I intend to build their confidence by presenting the subjects to them in an interesting and inspiring manner. Students often find it difficult to relate maths to any future career that's why I try to highlight practical application of the topics where possible. I would be willing to concentrate on specific areas that the student requests. My approach is focused on problem-solving and exam preparation. I find that a deeper understanding of the mathematical sciences can only come with practice. |

Teaching Experience: Resume editing I am a graduate of maths and computing with several years of working as a Statistician for a retailing company & over 25 years of teaching in Further education & sixth form colleges. During this period I taught from pre GCSE maths to A level maths (maths & statistics). I am also a very experienced ICT teacher teaching GCSE, ALVEL ICT & Computing, GNVQ Intermediate & GNVQ Advanced in ICT and also BTEC National in ICT. |
Tutoring Approach: I normally contact the pupil/pupil's parents to introduce myself and the agency, If they agree with tuition my agreement is to give 1 lesson during which I test the pupil's knowledge on a range of SIMPLE & BASIC maths concepts and give feedback to the parents. This method has worked very well either way. As part of tuition I make sure my pupils gain confidence & knowledge gently but surely. Generally after some lessons pupils show visible confidence & knowledge that are very satisfying for everyone concerned. Homework is a MUST no matter sometimes, due to school work, is just a few exercises. Also every so often pupils have tests on selected topics. |

| About Rachel: Hi, my name is Rachel and I am currently studying BSc(Hons) degree in mathematics at the university of Leeds. I have a keen interest in maths and I have always excelled and enjoyed it and I would love to help anyone of any level with mathematics. It would be great to have the chance to help as I know that a few years ago I have been in similar situations with studies and I feel I could be of great help. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently working with the university of leeds teaching children from ages 12-19 mathematics with a scheme trying to increase the numbers of maths graduates. This not only includes a god knowledge of maths but also involves fun activities and alternative learning methods. |

| About Beth: I am 27 years old and have just moved to York from Australia, with my husband. I love to read and spend time with my friends and family. |
Teaching Experience: I am a qualified Primary School teacher, and have 9 years experience working with children from 6 weeks old up to 15 years old. I have a wide variety of teaching methods to help students develop their learning skills and succeed in the classroom. My expertise in Maths is in teaching strategies for the 4 number operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. I have a very strong background in Literacy learning. I have many skills to assist students to improve their reading and comprehension ability, increase their vocabulary and improve their spelling. |
Tutoring Approach: I approach tutoring with a strong focus on identifying the needs of the tutee, and responding to the learning styles that suit them best. For younger students I prefer to make the learning experiences 'hands-on', and so I bring a number of learning tools to assist them to problem solve. I also like to leave my students with some visual reminders, and so prepare laminated cards that they can keep, and use to study until my next lesson with them. |

| About Lauren: I am a recent graduated of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, with a BA in Art History and a minor in Geography. Currently am working towards a MA in Art Business at Sotheby's Institute of Art. I have a strong background in History, Theater, Literature and Geography. Throughout my undergraduate degree I developed a variety of study skills and a strong work ethic that I would enjoy passing on. I am an enthusiastic individual and I value the importance of having fun while learning. |
Teaching Experience: During my undergraduate career I organized and led student study sessions for both Art History, Literature. As I recently completed my degree, much of the information and study habits are still fresh. Prior to this I tutored students through a progamme at my high school. This programme included students with minor learning disabilities. I helped young students in English, Science and Maths where I learn the value of both hands on and text book learning. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach would be individualized to the student. I would want to know the expectations or requirements of the student's program, then I would talk to the student and find out how they think they best learn; from there I would bring in my own learning skills to try and set up the best way to proceed. I also like to have a sample of their work to see where potential strengths and weaknesses lie, enabling me to work through problem areas. Depending upon each student, I will employ the different study skills I developed over time. I feel it is important to engage the student in their personal development as well, by encouraging them to set their own goals for our sessions. I would want to check at each session how the student felt things were going, and where more time needed to be spent. |
