Subjects: Italian  |  Religious Studies
Availability: Weekends / Weekdays
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you

About Gemma:
I am a very friendly, approachable person with a very positive attitude. I completed my degree in 2006, graduating with BA(hons) Religious Studies and Italian for which I received a 2:1 and a distinction for oral proficiency in Italian. I also studied Religious Studies and Italian at A -Level and GCSE. I have a PGCE (FE) from Cardiff University. I received a Distinction and was awarded Student of the Year. I am currently working as a Learning Support Worker which involves supporting students with a range of physical and learning difficulties. I am due to start working part time as a Religious Studies teacher after half term. Finally I have just started a Master's degree in Religious Studies as a distance learning student at Lampeter University.

Teaching Experience:

I spent a year living in Italy where I taught English as a foreign language to both children and adults. This involved working voluntarily with the University of Parma as part of the Lingua Project which aimed to encourage adults and university students to start or continue studies of a foreign language. During this time I was required to evaluate the materials available to students who attended the language centre and also create individual study plans for students who wanted to brush up on their English. I was also involved with creating tests to be used at the centre. Along with teaching the children this sparked my interest in teaching. When I returned to university I continued helping Italian students studying in Cardiff with their English. This involved meeting up for general conversation practice as well as proof reading essays and helping with academic language.
In June 2008 I completed my PGCE(FE). This involved a period of teaching other students on the course and a Teaching Skills Assessment in preparation for a 5 month teaching placement in a college. My placement took place at Gorseinon College, where I taught AS and A2 Religious Studies with a focus on Philosophy of Religion and Ethics. I was responsible for the planning, delivery and assessment of a course of revision sessions as well as teaching a key text for the synoptic module. I received distinctions for all eight of the Teaching Assessments carried out during my placement.
I am currently working as a Learning Support Worker which has given me excellent experience of working with students with physical disabilities and mild to severe learning difficulties.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very student centered approach to teaching, as I believe this is better for the student's learning and general development. I like to encourage students to delve into the subject themselves by pointing them in the right direction rather than using the traditional talk and chalk method. This may involve setting a text for them to read and asking questions, or asking the student to research a topic during the session to then give a short presentation at the end.
I also believe that it is important to listen to both the student and the parents about what they expect/need from me so I can adapt my style so it meets the needs of the student. I always take on board feedback so the student is able to reach their full potential. In short my approach depends very much on what the student needs from their tutoring.

About Furqan:
I am currently studying for a MBBS & BSc at Imperial College London and at present am in my final year of a study. Medicine is a dynamic, creative, challenging and competitive field. It is a very demanding course and warrants a lot of hard work, commitment, responsibility and team work. I have undertaken numerous communication skills programmes and team work classes whilst at Imperial College which have helped me to further develop my people skills, this is particularly important as I deal with patients on a day to day basis, which I enjoy very much. Communicating efficiently with patients involves great skill and the ability to gain ones trust. I believe I exhibit all of these qualities in my academic, professional and personal life. I am a focused individual with great ambition, high standards and expectations and enjoy working in competitive team environments these qualities form the foundation of my success.

Teaching Experience:

I have written over 500 articles for a healthcare website and have been tutoring privately for the last 2 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to get the best out of each student, tailoring my teaching to their individual needs. Whether it be exam focused tutoring, or just some extra help, I'm enthusiastic and focused and want to make learning fun.

As well as standard tutoring i can help students prepare for medical interviews and provide them with some insider tips!

About Lucy:
My name is Lucy Laycock. I am currently studying English Literature and an Education module at Durham university. I am passionate about learning and teaching and am planning to become a teacher after university. I read widely, this is one of my greatest passions. I am also a strong writer and can edit fluently, with my work having been published for example by Sky Sports and "Great Minds". I also speak strong Spanish, having studied it to A level and spent much time in Spanish speaking countries; most recently this summer in Costa Rica! Due to the nature of my course I can offer a lot of flexibility, whether it is just for a lesson to help on a difficult subject, or for a more intensive course to help a pupil reach their full potential and receive the one to one tuition they need.

I am also a keen sailor and enjoy travelling and drama. I am outgoing and enjoy working with young people.

Teaching Experience:

In April 2007 I worked in a school in Algeciras, Spain for 4 weeks. I taught students age 3-18 in English as a foreign language.

At school (I left in July 2007) I was Head Girl and as such was involved in extra curricular teaching methods such as accompanying students on field trips.

This summer I went to Costa Rica and taught underprivileged children aged 9-13, once again in English as a foreign language. I also worked with infant children at a daycare centre.

I am honoured to have been accepted this year onto the government "Student Associates Scheme" and will be spending time in a school in the Durham area teaching English to key stage 3 (11-13 year olds). This will compliment my Education module at university.

Tutoring Approach:

Each lesson should be geared towards the pupil. In some cases it may be appropriate to focus upon the particular area/s in which the pupil is struggling and to explain them in more detail, perhaps in new ways that will be more comprehendable to the individual. Other times it may be appropriate to run a course of lessons to cover a particular topic area alongside school study time, to compliment in class learning and aid with class set homework. School textbooks would be an essential aid to lessons to make the learning appropriate to the section of the curriculum.

I certainly think it is important to set some exercises to do between lessons, or to prepare for my next visit. This confirms knowledge and gives the pupil a chance to practise on their own. Of course, if at any point the individual was struggling they would be free to contact me by email or telephone for help.

Finally it is important to make sure that lessons are both fun and engaging, and that there is a good relationship between tutor and tutee. I think my age, and the fact I have recently finished education myself, makes me much more able to relate to younger age groups than some tutors.

About Helen:
I have just left university and am currently on a gap year. As you will see below, I have lots of experience with children and intend to make my career in children's publishing. I particularly enjoy working with children at the far ends of the educational spectrum- gifted children and those with behavioural issues. I am very literary- minded and have a broad knowledge of the children's book market- as well as academic tutor, I am always delighted to act as a passionate and dedicated reading mentor to young people.

Teaching Experience:

I currently work as a Core Subjects tutor for an after- school education centre. I work with children aged five and upwards to help them reach their full academic potential.
Previously to this, I have co- run both music workshops for primary school children (Keyboard skills and singing) and a drama club. I thus know how to inject a sense of fun into the proceedings, in order to help children develop an enthusiasm for learning.

Tutoring Approach:

I try and treat each child as an individual. I appreciate that some may need lots of technical help whilst others will need their imagination stimulated in order to generate an interest in the work- whatever the case, I cater for it.

About Tasneem:
I am a 5th year medical student at the University of Oxford currently taking a gap year. I did my preclinical training at the University of Cambridge from where I received a BA in Medical Sciences in 2006. I've always been keen to learn. and I'm even more keen to teach!

Teaching Experience:

I am currently working as a teaching assistant at my old school, Carlton Bolling College, in the areas of GCSE Maths and Science as well as A'level Biology. During my school years I did similar work on a voluntary basis.

Tutoring Approach:

I am 22 years old, and as I am still in study I am very aware of the approach needed when studying at the pre-university years. I believe that a good rapport between the tutor and tutee is essential, and I believe that every tutoring session must be targetted to not only covering the set syllabus but also acknowledging any areas of weakness and rectifying them. My request to my tutees has always been to ask lots of questions! And no question is ever a silly question. I think teaching is more than making sure a student learns a set number of facts, its about helping to develop an inquisitive mind and one that's intrigued by the subject at hand. Thats where I'm happy to help! At the moment I am happy to provide extensive tutoring, upto 6 hours per week, until March 2008, but my plans after that are uncertain.

After completion of my Bachelor degree I started teaching in an International School and taught subjects like Science, Mathematics, Physics and Computing for last 4 years. I am confident about my teaching methods and the student really enjoy learning lessons when I am in the class.

Tutoring Approach:

I usually give importance on the ability of the student. I devote as much time as possible and follow different approach while teaching and make sure that the lesson is in the grasp of the student. I always try to relate each topic with real time examples so that the student can easily understand the topic and can keep it in mind for future.

About Daniel:
I am currently studying for my undergraduate degree (Human Sciences) at the University of Oxford, currently living in Summertown. Upon graduation I hope to progress into research. My key interests are the natural sciences (chemistry, physics and biology), with mathematics forming a large component of my studies. I believe that for a student to improve their knowledge they must be willing to apply themselves both during the tutorial and then consolidate this information for it to truly be taken in.

I do al my bookings and confirmations through my university email so people can be sure I am a genuine University of Oxford student.

Teaching Experience:

Whilst I have not formally taught within a school, I have recent experience of the schooling system, and thus the shortcomings of many current teaching styles.

I can appreciate the student's perspectives and frustrations at not immediately grasping concepts, and am excellent at unravelling tricky topics, making them far more digestible.

With regards to the natural sciences I am very pleased with the way in which I can show how the key topics all link together, enhancing one another and making each other easier to comprehend/understand.

Whilst studying at college I tutored four other students, both during lunch breaks and after college and all four exceeded their predicted grades in the relevant subjects by at least one grade and in one case four grades higher.

Tutoring Approach:

Firstly it is imperative to identify the specific areas of weakness that need to be improved. Approach the problem from a new angle to shed light and add clarity to the concept. The key principle is to turn your weakest areas into strengths.

I would also leave work/reading to be completed for the next session, and this would serve to consolidate the previously covered topics. Equally I would always be prepared in advance and would ring beforehand to establish exactly what material was wanted to be covered as to maximise productivity.

If anyone were unhappy with my tutoring I would happily agree to waive the fee.

About Paul:
I am 42 and have worked full-time as a piano teacher and performer for 20 years . My background is in classical music - I have played for many choirs & musical groups. But my other love is jazz and show songs, and have played in hotels and restaurants. People find me very easy-going, funny and enthusiastic. Music is my great passion and I try to help everyone I meet and teach to find that passion in themselves.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching Piano on a one-to-one basis for 20 years. I have taught children as young as 3 to adults over 70. I particularly enjoy teaching children and beginners.

Tutoring Approach:

My style is probably best described as spontaneous and adaptable. I don't believe in fixed 'methods'. Everyone learns differently and also wants to play different music and achieve different musical goals. I always start by spending some time listening to my students musical desires. then I advise on how to get there in as fun and fulfilling a way as possible. I am happy to help students pass exams, but realise exams are not the best way for everyone. With children I always try to get their parents involved playing with them. And particularly emphasise the fun aspect of it. It can work like magic - I have taught 100s of children who probably wouldn't have responded to the old 'stick' based teaching methods, but who HAVE responded so well to the 'carrot' method they have quickly found the inner enthusiasm to spend hours playing every week.
