I am a academic (PhD in philosophy; areas of specialistion are German thought and the philosophy of human communication), with a passion for teaching. I work with children and adults and can draw not only on academic experience but also on several years of experience as a strategic communication manager in international business.

About Nabil:
I am a young, capable undergraduate at the University of Oxford. I am patient, understanding and have a passion for teaching - a career I would like to pursue in the future. I was studying a Masters in Engineering but am now deferring to Economics & Management so have some time on my hands, and would love to use this oppurtunity to teach.
I grew up in Kenya, and came to England in 2004 to complete my Secondary and Higher Education. After 2 years at Rugby school and a gap year, I started at the University of Oxford (Somerville College) in 2007.

Teaching Experience:

I have had previous private tutoring experience in both Kenya and England, as well as teaching disabled children at a school in Diani, Kenya

Tutoring Approach:

For exam preparation, having only recently completed these exams myself, I use a number of techniques to master my pupils exam technique and outline any weaknesses, which I can then tackle through patient but thorough and aggressive explanations and problems.
For general tutoring, patient and explicit analysis of a pupils work, with some level of 'out of the box' thinking and real life examples.
I find that I have a unique position as being able to associate with students to some level as their peer, and find that this approach helps that I can relate to various pressures and problems with any academic problem.

About Johanna:
I have just graduated from the University of Bristol with a 2:1 BA French and Russian. I have spent a lot of time in France from working as an Au Pair in the South of France attending a Summer Language School in Nice and spending time in Paris and attending the Sorbonne Course for international students.

Teaching Experience:

I have little teaching experience. I was an English Language Assistant at a school in Paris for a month where I was really thrown in the deep end with no training and had to depend on my own initiative to appeal to the children and get the best from them.

Tutoring Approach:

From my experience of studying French oer the years I feel that I have gained first hand knowledge of what the examiners are looking for from the student.

About Kirsten:
I am a recent graduate from Southampton University, graduating in Mathematics with Economics with First Class Honors.

About Philip:
I'm a 34 year old freelance writer and tutor who possesses a BSc Honours degree in Applied Biology as well as a Masters degree in Professional writing. I have written radio plays for BBC radio as well as features for magazines and newspapers in the Southwest. In addition, I have travelled widely in Europe teaching English and so have a broad understanding of other countries and cultures. As well as my native English I also speak Spanish.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English as a foreign language for nearly eight years and have taught in Poland, Greece, France, Spain and the UK. During those years I have taught all levels from elementary to advanced level and from young children to older adults. In addition, to teaching English as a foreign language, I also teach creative writing courses in Bristol from people wanting to learn more about the creative process especially novels and short stories.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in being prepared for all situations in the classroom which means my approach to lesson planning is very through and organised. My teaching manner is relaxed as I want my students to feel comfortable on order to gain as much knowledge as possible in the allotted time. This is especially important in one-to-one lessons. I endeavour to use my own materials wherever possible and depending on the level make them relevant to current topics and events. This is particular important when teaching advanced level English Language or Biology. Needless to say I am always punctual and smart.

About Desiree:
I am a native Spanish woman who has just moved to England as part of a career change. My extended family is located within England which I visit every year and hence why I chose the North of England. My personal interests include ballet, argentine tango and travelling. My immediate family is all based in Jerez de la Frontera in the south of Spain, and I have one sister and three dogs - which are a nightmare - but I love them all.

Teaching Experience:

I have a BEd from the University of Cadiz and in addition to Spanish have been a professional ballet teacher for the last 10 years, so have a lot of experience in both one-on-one assistance and also larger, more demanding groups. I also have a personal interest in SEN students and have additionally worked with individuals, not necessarily just in teaching them Spanish - but also in behaviour management.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a flexible approach to teaching and can cater to a variety of needs depending on what people require. My pedagogical view is that anyone can be taught to learn a foreign language based on the appropriate use of visual, auditory and kinaesthetic stimulation. My framework for teaching Spanish can be somewhat attributed to the one I had when learning English when I was young and having taken the best elements of that and incorporated it my teaching. However I insist on a good attitude and work ethic to succeed.

I passionately believe that all children can reach their full potential if they have the right motivation behind them but more importantly the self-confidence in their ability. I also think that as far as possible learning should be a fun and enjoyable experience rather than purely something based on exams and results.

About Patrick:
I am a very optimistic and enthusiastic person with a lot of interest in what I can learn from people of different backgrounds and cultures- I think this helps to inform me as a person and assists me as a teacher and human being. I love to travel, whether this is for a short time or long time and I have ambitions to see many more places before it's too late.
I recently returned to Scotland as I will be marrying my fiancee next year, so I am here for the long haul!

Teaching Experience:

6 years ago I completed a TEFL Taster course at Heriott-Watt University in Edinburgh, and within 8 months I was boarding a plane bound for Tokyo, Japan, where I worked for Nova Group, which was at that time the largest language school in Japan. I taught a wide range of individuals there, from very young children (age 3-12) to retired adults. I taught on a one-to-one basis and I have experience of teaching TOEIC and TOEFL from this time. I also taught small group classes (maximum of 4 students) from beginner level to intermediate and then advanced.

I returned to Europe after 12 months in Japan and subsequently completed my Cambridge CELTA in June 2006 at International House in Seville, Spain, where I gained a B-Pass. My most recent job was in Lisbon, Portugal, where I worked for Cambridge School from September 2007 to September 2008. At Cambridge I taught larger group classes ranging in ages from 9-90 and I had the opportunity to teach First Certificate classes, taking advanced English speakers to new levels of aptitude, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I also taught professional people on a one-to-basis and as a result I have a lot of experience of techniques and materials which can be used to improve individuals' grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, both within and outwith traditional curriculums.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a believer in the idea that to teach is to learn, and I feel that my major strength is that I can listen to my students and identify their needs very quickly. I think it is possible to accommodate the needs of the student and the objectives of the lesson quite smoothly and that is usually my objective as a teacher/tutor.
I feel that there are possibilities for learning in every context and environment, no matter how mundane or abstract it may seem and I thrive on situations where my initiative, and that of the student, is necessary. I also feel that traditional textbook style teaching can constantly be reformed and improved upon, in light of new and more relevant contexts.
With my experience of set curriculums and ad-hoc style lessons, I feel I can meet your needs as a student of English.

About William:
I am a 20 year old student at the University of Leeds (rated the fifth best English department in the UK), going into my second year and studying for a Ba in English Language. English is not only my academic interest but also a great passion of mine; I am especially interested in dialectology and Child Linguistics but have an extensive range of skills. My command of the English vocabulary and the grammar system is superb. My intention is to teach after University, most likely at primary level, although I do intend to spend some time doing research first.

Please note I am available during University term times. I will return to Leeds on 8th September 2008.

Teaching Experience:

As a 20 year old my experience in this field is not vast, but I have had experience in a volunteer capacity at my former Primary school and also aided my younger brother with his 11-Plus (Grammar School entrance exam) and his GCSEs. I also have a number of very young cousins and am good with children.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is one of structured, organised teaching based around the needs of the individual pupil. I aim to focus on the pupil's weak areas and strengthen these whilst adding to their general knowledge of the subject by widening the reach of the teaching alongside the core focus. The teaching I offer is both fun and interactive; I know from experience that if the teaching is not engaging then learning can be a dull affair, making one reluctant to learn. I would set homework as I felt it was necessary - for example grammar exercises if I felt the pupil needed to strengthen what they'd learnt in the lesson. I would also ask that all pupils read their notes between lessons in order that they recall what they've learnt and that lessons can progress smoothly without reverting to the previous week's topics.
