Subjects: Life Science  |  Geography  |  Earth Science  |  Combined Science  |  Biology
Availability: Weekends / Weekdays
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online

About Stephen:
During my studies at University College London, I've been exposed to a diverse range of subject matters in both Earth Sciences and Zoology. My degree was primarily in Palaeobiology, and covered aspects such as Invertebrate and Vertebrate Palaeontology, Genetics, Botany, Micropalaeontology and Molecular Biology. I have a keen interest in the sciences, specifically in vertebrate evolution and biogeography. Having studied at UCL for four years, my abilities in problem solving, analytical skills, organisation, time management and communication has naturally progressed beyond my previous levels reached at college. My analytical ability, along with practical ability has also been honed as a result of strong scientific study, which has been supplemented with numerous field and lab experiences.

In the realm of Palaeobiology, I developed a particular interest in using phylogenetic trees to decipher past and present biogeographical patterns. I am particularly interested in vertebrate evolution and biodiversity and this was well supplemented by numerous courses such as Animal Form and Function, Palaeontology, Mammalian Evolution and Advanced Palaeontological Analytical Techniques. I was also given the opportunity to work under Dr. Paul Upchurch (UCL, former Cambridge) in a study of the Mesozoic group of flying vertebrates, the Pterosaurs. This study was highly successful, and is now being prepared for publication in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society. My strong interest in vertebrate groups ranges from Pterosaurs, to early Amniotes and to primates. Paleoecology is another field that carries a particular interest, specifically in relation to biogeography and ecological niche partitioning. This has been supported by both conventional zoological studies and from evolutionary genetics.

Teaching Experience:

I have also completed 7 months of a PhD/Teaching Assistant post at the University of Aberdeen. The involved the training of MA students in using Excel for scientific databases, and it's application in providing visual aids for presentations. I was also heavily involved in training the students in producing power point presentations, to convey effective scientific themes to the public. The students were also directly assessed by myself, and trained in producing reports and essays of a good enough standard to be published.

Tutoring Approach:

As my degree was primarily a multi disciplinary subject, my approach to teaching very much follows this structure. I believe in teaching certain subjects through the point of many examples, in different disciplines. This allows the student to grasp the connectivity between the sciences, and the true reality of research in the modern world, which is almost now entirely geared towards multi disciplinary studies. As I attended a world class institution such as UCL, many of the lecturer styles throughout my degree has heavily influenced my ability to teach. I now approach teaching in the manner of allowing the student to consider all alternatives to different theories and methods, and then proceed to guide them in understanding why certain theories/hypotheses are held in higher regard than others.

About Tomoka:
As a graduate of The Musashino Academy of Music in Japan, I have extensive experience in performing as a concert pianist in Japan and accompanist for Violinist and Vocalist for their concerts.
I accompanied on a Japanese Canzone CD which was released in 2005 and I used to make music for TV commercials. I'm not only limited to classical music, I also have experience and understanding of many types of composition, from ethnic forms right through to modern, contemporary, techno and electro. I am well traveled and have an understanding of many different cultures.
I am an outgoing, fun person and although I think this shows through to pupils, my lessons are strict and I prefer only to take on serious students who are determined to achieve their goals.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for 13 years in Japan, 1 year in the USA and 13 years in the UK. I can train you to all levels, for all English or Japanese piano grade exams or for entrance to music schools, universities and all levels above.

Tutoring Approach:

Students who want to improve your skills & pass exams, I am confident that you will see improvement from the very first lesson.
I feel that music is not just about learning the notes & playing them in the right order - like people, every piece has it's own character, emotion & depth. I think it is just as important to get the student to recognise & express this, as it is for them to learn the correct technique.

About Simon:
Hi,

I'm a 37 year old father of two. I enjoy an active lifestyle playing plenty of tennis and football, which act as a great balance to teaching full time.

I hope that I'm a warm and friendly person that can form excellent rapport with children and adults alike, which can provide an excellent basis to developing a tutoring relationship.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching in a very successful Brighton primary school for the last six years. Before that I taught at prestigious primary in Hampstead, London for 3 years. At present I am training to become a Deputy Head with the local authority.

Last year I completed my Masters in Education at Sussex University, where I specialised studying using games to increase children's enjoyment and enthusiasm in numeracy and ideas to develop boys' interest in literacy.

I have taught children from Year 1 through to Year 6. Furthermore, I have successfully tutored many children in all aspects of the primary curriculum over the last eight years.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that tutoring works best when it occurs in a friendly atmosphere where the child feels relaxed and supported.

I like to meet with both parent and child to discuss their individual needs. From these meetings, I can then create an individual programme to help the child to develop their learning to the full.

About Hanna:
Hello,
I am currently a second year Film and Media student at MMU. I was born in the Netherlands from Polish parents and lived there for 17 years. At home we spoke Polish and on Saturday's I attended Polish school. After 17 years my family decided to move to Poland, and I finished my school there. Basically I was raised bilingual, so I know that it can be sometimes hard to try to let your child speak a different language at home than at school.
I'm have a rather open and easygoing personality, I'm young and still full of energy as well as patience. Although I do not have an teaching experience, I would definitely suitable for conversational tutorials.

Teaching Experience:

None, but one has top start somewhere.

Tutoring Approach:

Basically learning something should be fun, interesting, and not boring. One has to be patient and know how to level with the children yet still maintaining some respect. When I attended Saturday school I often had one- to -one sessions with my teacher. Thanks to that, I realise how important and intensive a tutoring session can be.
