Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Katharine: I graduated from Oxford University in 2006 and was the recipient of a Progress Prize in November 2005. I am a very strong academic and have been working in the field of education at an independent school in Notting Hill Gate, where I monitor the progress of students and have been responsible for their university applications. I have also done some private tutoring work there, as outlined in the 'Teaching Experience' field below. I will be returning to university in September 2008 and will begin a postgraduate course in Law, so I will be leaving my full-time job and looking for student to tutor privately in London. I am flexible as to the location and I would enjoy having students at my house in West Dulwich, if it is not inconvenient for students to travel there (I live a few minutes from Herne Hill station, which is five minutes by train from Victoria). I am also happy to travel to the student's home, depending on location. As well as my 2:1 in English Language & Literature, I was an excellent student of History and Music A-Level and achieved 'A' grades in both, receiving full marks in History AS-Level (300/300) and in the Performance Module of Music A-Level, both for AS (90/90) and A2 (90/90). I also took Gold Medal with Honours in both The Speaking of Verse & Prose and Acting, as well as Grade 8 in Singing (with Distinction) and Piano, all before I had left school. |
Teaching Experience: In my current position as Acting Director of Studies at an independent school in West London, I have also assisted two overseas students who needed help with their English in order to be able to enter university. In both cases I worked intensively on exam technique in order for the students to improve sufficiently before their next scheduled exam to get the grades they needed. Both students achieved the required score in their next exam and progressed to university. For 2.5 years I was a volunteer assistant at the Stretton School of Speech & Drama, helping to teach students aged 11 - 16. As well as helping students select and prepare pieces for recitals and LAMDA examinations, I gave mini-workshops to classes on mime, accents, stance and other details for improved acting, taught the basics of sight-reading and sight-acting, covered for more senior teachers in their absence and taught the Theory of Speech and Drama to Grade 6 standard. As my experience, qualifications and confidence grew, my responsibilities increased and by the end of my experience I was holding classes of up to 15 students on my own. My favourite memories are of privately tutoring the more shy students, assisting them with their pieces, and helping them to prepare for their upcoming exams. I used the skills I developed outside of these classes by giving free private tuition to peers who wanted to improve their basic singing. |
Tutoring Approach: I am very proud of the achievements that I have listed because I feel I worked very hard to accomplish them, and I think that this is why I make an excellent private tutor. The best person to help someone who has a problem is someone who has experienced that problem themself. If I had always been a perfect student, I do not think I would make a good teacher. But I wasn't always a perfect student: I had to work hard at some areas, and I learnt to 'play the game' by picking up excellent exam techniques. My approach is as follows. (1) Try to pinpoint the student's difficulty. Is it a lack of understanding of the material? Do they understand but need greater depth of knowledge? Have they developed a 'mental block' about that subject? (2) Explore that problem with them, helping them understand what is holding them back as the first step to helping them resolve the problem. (3) Constant practice is the best way to ensure a proper understanding and knowledge. Going over and over the material with the student in different and interesting ways will help them understand the information whilst keeping it fresh. (4) Encourage the student to read around the subject, if time allows, and provide the necessary starting-point for their extra reading. Teaching them to apply all the knowledge they acquire is paramount. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Elizabeth: I am a gap year student who is going to York University in 2008 to study history and politics. I can offer private tuition in history, politics, geography and law, in preparation for GCSE, AS and A level exams. I am an organised, committed, reliable and enthusiastic individual who enjoys working with children and young adults, helping them to develop their understanding and interest in a variety of subjects. |
Teaching Experience: For several years whilst I was at school I was an enthusiastic volunteer for Fun Fizzical, a movement and dance group organized by Lewisham council for disabled children and their siblings. As a volunteer, part of my responsibility was to teach and help children to develop their basic language and numeracy skills, whilst ensuring that a stimulating and exciting environment was created for them. I found it a very rewarding and humbling experience, which taught me valuable skills such as patience, sensitivity and commitment, whilst developing my skills in teamwork and communication. In addition to this during my work experience, where I worked at the Tower of London and Hampton Court, I conducted independent historical research, which I then used to plan educational sessions, geared to school children, of various ages and abilities. It was necessary to ensure that the material collected was not only historically accurate but also easy to understand and enjoyable to learn about, helping the children to develop an interest in different periods of history. |
Tutoring Approach: Whilst tutoring I would pay particular attention to the needs of each student, and tailor their study courses to best meet their needs and wishes. My approach to tutoring emphasises clarity, flexibility, and an enthusiasm for learning, within an informal and relaxed yet structured and interactive environment. I would encourage students to think imaginatively and challenge themselves academically, encouraging debate and broadening their horizons. This would not only help to improve a child's examination technique but also their academic development. |

I have a wide range of musical experience and understand the technical requirements of most orchestral instruments having specialised in contemporary (avant-garde) composition. Aside from my academic qualifications I am a grade 8 violinist and completed my grade 5 theory (with distinction). I also play Guitar, Bass and Sitar and dabble in music recording and production and am a songwriter in my free time. Thus I can offer insight into most major musical branches. |
Teaching Experience: Throughout my undergraduate and postgraduate courses I taught students privately focusing on music theory, violin and guitar tuition. I currently run a guitar club at an Ipswich High School teaching entry level guitar to students aged 12-16. Prior to my degree courses I taught guitar and violin privately on a smaller scale to gather teaching experience teaching students aged between 10 - 52. I have also supported younger students on University Music courses in composition techniques and theory and can additionally provide contemporary aesthetic grounding and reasoning behind composition styles. My CRB check was initialised by this institution. |
Tutoring Approach: Every student has their own requirements and personal goals. I aim to help them achieve those goals utilizing the wide array of musical experience I have assimilated over the last thirteen years as a musician, student and composer. | About Alex: I am a recent English graduate from the University of Bristol, achieving the highest first-class degree in my year and am currently studying for a Masters in English at Bristol. |
Teaching Experience: I have one year's experience as a classroom assistant, which involved one-to-one teaching as well as group supervision of primary- and secondary-school-age children. I also have extensive experience of teaching children and teenagers as a volunteer for a progressive educational children's charity. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that rather than simply talking or lecturing to a student, a tutor should engage in a two-way dialogue so as to encourage the student to work things out for themselves. By outlining problems and jointly working to overcome them, the student becomes more confident and secure in his or her ability to overcome future challenges. |

| About Carmen: I am a native Spanish teacher married with 2 children in primary school. I have been teaching Spanish for the last 10 years. I like to prepare my lessons for each person or group. I can teach children and adults one to one or small groups. |
Teaching Experience: As a Spanish teacher I have worked with children and adults- both on an individual basis and in groups. I have assessed their's level of knowledge and then raised them to a higher level in accordance with their individual capacity of grasping vocabulary, grammar and general structure of the language. Some people are fast learners, others need a bit more time, and I have always been trying to give each child the time he or she needs to make progress. |
Tutoring Approach: I'm teaching not just the language, but also made them familiar with Spanish and Latin American culture, history and geography. Especially my talking about customs and fiestas inspired the children and motivated them. I also taught them Spanish nursery rhymes and Christmas carols and worked together with them on drawings and other artwork. |

| About Sharik: Throughout my studies (GCSEs and A-Levels) I have been a straight As student. I have a BSc. Hons. degree in Biomedical Science from Durham University at 2.1 level. This was essentially a combination of Biology and Chemistry, which provides detailed information behind human biology/medicine. |
Teaching Experience: From 2007-2008, I worked in probation, teaching ex-offenders Maths and English up to Level 2 (GCSE level). This year, I have been working in a College in London teaching a variety of different subjects. I have been teaching Maths and English up to Level 2. I have also taught IT up to A-Level, including some basic adult evening classes and have experience in Microsoft Office applications. The majority of my classes were GCSE and A-Level Biology and Chemistry classes. As students found my lessons useful, I also provided GCSE and A-Level Biology and Chemistry revision classes during the holidays. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that all students have potential, but it is up to their tutor to help them reach that potential. I prepare before every class to ensure I have the best resources to aid my students in their learning. It is essential to go into a class with a flexible attitude, as sometimes it is essential to find an alternative way of explaining a concept. Finding different ways of remembering information is useful, as everyone has a different learning style. I can also provide helpful hints and tips, especially as I remember my own experience of studies as well as my background in education. |

| About Frances: I have a degree in education and I have been tutoring (mainly for 11+) for the past 6 years. These sessions are very rewarding as you get to know the children's way of thinking really well. I have had very good success with 11+, with an average of 90% of my pupils gaining selective school entrance. |
Teaching Experience: I qualified with a degree in South Africa, and came to England 6 years ago to learn more about the English way of teaching. I have taught in both private and government schools. In the private schools the focus was mainly on passing 11+. I enjoy primary school aged children, and I have always achieved really good results with them. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe children must have fun when learning. If they are not having fun they will not look forward to it, and they will not retain as much. It is important that children have a relaxed and comfortable environment in which to learn. I have a specially designed study for this purpose, and all children have loved coming here. |

I have a passion for books, and have studied a range of literary genres and authors from Chaucer to Chekov. I enjoy engaging in discussions about novels and ideas explored in literature, especially concerning the philosophical function of literature. I have a strong musical background, having been a Chorister at Salisbury Cathederal and studied at the junior department of the Royal College of Music. I have distinctions in Grade 8 Singing and Grade 6 Piano, as well as Grade 5 Music Theory and Grade 6 Violin. |
