I am a married father of two young children and hold a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Birmingham (specialising in Molecular Microbiology). For the past three years I have worked as a post-doctoral research scientist at Warwick HRI (University of Warwick).
I am enthusiastic about science and have always enjoyed explaining scientific ideas to others, whatever their level of understanding.

Teaching Experience:
During my scientific career I have been responsible for small groups of work experience students, demonstrating experiments as well as teaching the theory behind the practice. I have successfully taught various techniques to fellow scientists - students as well as more senior researchers. I have also given talks at scientific conferences, explaining concepts to people with varying levels of understanding of the subject.
I have recently tutored several A-level Biology students, and all my feedback has been positive, for example:
'My daughter found Chris to be very helpful and easy to talk to with regard to the aspects of the work that she was having difficulty with. He explained things well and took time to make sure that she understood. He always sent her homework between sessions and made sure that they were marked and discussed. Overall, I have been very impressed with him.'

Tutoring Approach:
I understand that each student has individual needs. I first identify the subject areas they are finding the most difficult. We then work together following the syllabus and I explain ideas to the student in different ways, using examples and visual aids. It is very important to use practice questions to both check their understanding and also build confidence in their own ability. This also helps to develop their exam technique.

I began studying Medicine, then changed to BSc Genetics, then gained a PGCE with a Physics specialism, worked for two years teaching Secondary Science, and am now studying for an MA in Sociolinguistics. Tutoring Approach:
I make extensive use of past exam questions; the best way to do well in exams is to practise doing exams! This also allows realistic monitoring of performance as tutoring continues. I normally email exam questions for students to attempt before the tutoring session.

Students should have time to explore their interests in the subject by asking questions of their own. This is an important part of reflective learning and will help build and maintain enthusiasm.
