| About Oliver: I was educated at Tonbridge School, Kent, before gaining entry to study for a BA degree in Chinese at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) Thornhaugh Street, London. |
Teaching Experience: In my last year of secondary school I was responsible for mentoring 60 boys of varying ages. A large part of this role involved going through topics with them from GCSE through to A Level. Since leaving I have still been called upon by some of these students for their final exams for entry to the likes of Oxford, Cambridge and LSE. I specialise in British and American Politics. In particular, I can provide specific tuition in the following EdExcel modules or in the subjects which these modules cover: AS Level Modules: 6491 - People & Politics (Democracy/Elections/Parties/Pressure Groups) 6492 - Governing the UK (Constitution/Parliament/Executive/Judiciary) 6493 - Changing UK System (Elections/Constitutional Reform/Devolution/EU) A Level Modules (American Politics): 6500 - Government & Politics 4C (Elections & Voting/Political Parties) 6501 - Government & Politics 5C (Constitution/Supreme Court/Congress/Presidency/Federal Bureaucracy) 6502 - Government & Politics 6C (Comparative American & British Politics: Constitutions/Judiciaries/Assemblies/Executives) Furthermore, I offer in-depth analysis of the following A-Level English texts: Geoffrey Chaucer, The Merchant's Tale Harold Pinter, The Homecoming William Shakespeare, Hamlet William Shakespeare, The Tempest |
Tutoring Approach: I will be approaching sessions with the notion of tailoring them to the specific requirements of the candidate - if one requires to go from the start of the syllabus in depth or merely requires clarification or revision of a topic not understood in school. In short - any concern. I will also be providing comprehensive, concise notes in every topic and explanations of how the exam works, and thus, how to reach the highest marks by answering them in the correct and focused manner. I will set homework and rigorously revise the information with the candidate so it should be noted that sessions will be thorough and will require an extra commitment from the candidate. Above all, I bring to the table the experience of having completed them very recently. Please enquire for availability (Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri 5.30pm-8.30pm, Thurs 3.30pm-8.30pm). |

| About Fergal: I am a postgraduate student with the School of English at Queen's University, Belfast, currently researching a thesis on discourse and consumption in modern British and Irish poetry. As a freelance writer I have had feature articles and reviews on a number of subjects on culture and the arts, published both locally and nationally. |
Teaching Experience: I have previously tutored English students at both GCSE and A-level. I have also worked for Queen's School of English promoting literature study to both secondary level and undergraduate students from around the U.K. and Ireland. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a great enthusiasm for literature and believe quite passionately in it's cultural significance. As such I think it's important to make texts at all times relevant and accessible to the student. No two students and therefore, no two readings will ever be the same, and I approach texts from as varied a range of perspectives as possible in order to arm the tutee with the information, vocabulary and means not just to answer, but also to ask questions fluently and with confidence. In this way I hope to make to provide a relaxed and hopefully enjoyable environment in which the student is encouraged to think critically and creatively about the text as well as their own work. |

| About Pilar: Hello. I am a student at Cambridge University. I was previously at a successful, all-girls, private school. I have top grades in a wide range of GSCEs. I took Spanish, Latin, Ancient Greek and General Studies at A Level and passed with high A grades. I have a 2:1 in Classics Part I for Cambridge and am now taking Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies. I am 20 years old. People describe me as friendly and sociable as well as organised and efficient. In my Cambridge college I hold various positions of responsibility. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience as a private tutor. During July '08 I taught English as a foreign language at a school in Dubai, UAE. I had my own form class but during the school day I saw 60 children between the ages of 11 and 15. I have also taught workshops to English Primary School children and Japanese High School and University Students. |
Tutoring Approach: I am friendly and supportive as a tutor; encouraging my pupils to stretch themselves and achieve their best. Although I am only 20, I feel that I have the right amount of maturity to be guide my pupils, but I am also young enough to seem approachable. Tutoring is not the same as teaching in a classroom, so I do not believe that a Tutor should be the same as a teacher. As I am still at university I will only be available between terms. My university holidays coincide with school holidays. |

I have recently tutored several A-level Biology students, and all my feedback has been positive, for example: 'My daughter found Chris to be very helpful and easy to talk to with regard to the aspects of the work that she was having difficulty with. He explained things well and took time to make sure that she understood. He always sent her homework between sessions and made sure that they were marked and discussed. Overall, I have been very impressed with him.' |
Tutoring Approach: I understand that each student has individual needs. I first identify the subject areas they are finding the most difficult. We then work together following the syllabus and I explain ideas to the student in different ways, using examples and visual aids. It is very important to use practice questions to both check their understanding and also build confidence in their own ability. This also helps to develop their exam technique. |

| About Patricia: I am a graduate in English and Linguistics by the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain and I am currently living in Manchester pursuing a teaching career while studying part-time towards Masters by research qualification in Applied Linguistics. I am an enthusiastic person with a real passion for languages and linguistics that is reflected not only in my academic formation but also in my personal interest in foreign languages such as French, German and Japanese. I am always looking for new proffesional and intellectual challenges and goal setting and achieving are a must for me. I genuinely enjoy contact with students and in general with all those who show an interest in a different language and civilisation and who can play an active role in the learning process by making it a complete life-changing experience. I believe in relevant proactive teaching that involves a personal commitment of the learner to master the formal and communicative aspects of the foreign language to the same extent as the cultural. |
Teaching Experience: After finishing my degree in June 2006 I joined the department of Modern Foreign Languages of the University of Wolverhampton to work as an Spanish Language Assistant. My duties were to work independently with groups of students doing Spanish either as part of their degree or as an elective course, as well as to offer one-to-one and group tutorials and to contribute to the design of language learning materials and activities. This was a great opportunity to initiate a career as teacher of Spanish as a foreign language since I was given the chance to work freely developing my own materials, contributing to every course's curriculum by adapting my weekly lessons to the groups' particular needs and interests at the same time that I try to give the students an insight into the sociocultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries- politics, history, media, culture, etc. For this purpose I truly believe in a communicative student-centred approach to language teaching that involves the use of up-to-date authentic materials adapted to classroom use, implemented with the latest range of audiovisual devices and computing programmes when most suitable. I also have experience as casual tutor with Berlitz Manchester and as a freelance private tutor. |
Tutoring Approach: I have very vauable experience in one-to-one teaching in higher and adult education and consider myself a friendly approachable tutor who genuinely enjoys taking part in the learning process letting the learner be the protagonist and thus acting only as facilitator and support. I develope taylor-made lessons adapted to the student's needs, level and interests through which I try to enhance their linguistic skills (grammar, written and oral production and comprehension) and encourage their autonomy, working at their own pace and taking into account their individual characteristics and learning styles. |

| About John: I began studying Medicine, then changed to BSc Genetics, then gained a PGCE with a Physics specialism, worked for two years teaching Secondary Science, and am now studying for an MA in Sociolinguistics. I am fascinated by all areas of Science from quantum mechanics, chaos and cosmology to socio-biology, cognitive science and psycholinguistics. I have a passion for acquiring knowledge and educating others, and have an ever-expanding range of strategies to suit individual needs. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience as a classroom teacher of Science with year 7 up to year 13 across the ability range, and have successfully tutored students in their homes in all three sciences at GCSE and A level to improve grades for re-sits. |
Tutoring Approach: I make extensive use of past exam questions; the best way to do well in exams is to practise doing exams! This also allows realistic monitoring of performance as tutoring continues. I normally email exam questions for students to attempt before the tutoring session. Students should have time to explore their interests in the subject by asking questions of their own. This is an important part of reflective learning and will help build and maintain enthusiasm. |

| About Rebecca: I am a law graduate from the university of Hertfordshire. I currently work for a legal agency within the criminal and family sectors appearing at both crown and county court. I am an excellent motivator and wish to help others to achieve their full potential- whether it be progressively throughout the year or just guidance with revision. I am able to help with Assignments and Essays as well as give guidance on examination technique. Help and guidance can be given towards legal research. Subjects able to teach: Crime, Contract, Legal method and skills, Tort, European Law, Company Law (2006 Act), Employment Law, Medical law & Negligence, Equity and Trusts Available at short notice. |
Teaching Experience: I have previously privately taught/ guided other student that were on my course in the 1st and 2nd years of their degree as well as A level students in my local area. This has all been done on a private basis. |
Tutoring Approach: I teach in a friendly, effective, and professional way on a one to one basis and in groups,To ensure your success, I provide an initial assessment of your needs and plan a course of study with you. All lessons are prepared and tailored to suit your individual needs, and you can have as many lessons as you wish. I like to keep things simple and easy to understand as the law can be extremely confusing at times. I understand that learning takes time & I think it's important to allow tutees to take their time and to learn through asking questions. One of my motto's being if you do not understand: Ask... Everyone is different; some tutees prefer to learn through reading whilst others like to practice answering exam questions, some of my tutees prefer to draw mind maps to aid their memory. In any case, I am able to adapt confidently to any approach that my tutee(s) prefer(s). I am also willing to mark any exam questions that have been written out by the student to further their development. |

| About Emily: I am a Postgraduate violin student at the Royal Northern College of Music where I also completed my undergraduate with a 1st class honours degree. |
Teaching Experience: I recieved Pedagodgy tuition throughout my degree. I teach violin at Our Lady's school in Oldham and privately. I'm also the violin tutor for Rochdale Youth Orchestra. |
