Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Esther: I am a 20 year old student, originally from Vienna/Austria. I just moved to London to study at Londonmet. As I am the oldest of 6 children, I have always been a very responsible person. |
Teaching Experience: I was giving private tutoring lessons in my homeland for about four years in the subjects German, English and mathematics. The children I was working with, both trusted and respected me. Furthermore their parents were very content with me, as their children's school performences considerably improved. |
Tutoring Approach: I know from experience that children and young teenagers are more willing to learn if you are patient and if you give them the feeling that it is absolutley alright if there is something they do not understand. They should know that I am here to help and that no question is forbidden. The first thing to do is to clear up any confusions in the certain subject, which is the basis for a succsessful teaching. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Harriet: I have just finished my A-levels in Religious Studies, Classical Civilisation and Design Technology (all of which I am happy to tutor) and achieved A's in all of them, which I am very pleased with. I also judge trampolining which I enjoy greatly, and have achieved my gold Duke of Edinburgh. I am outgoing, bubbly and confident, characteristics which have been enhanced through my part time job in Lush and my participation in the CCF. I enjoy being around people and encouraging them to achieve their full potential. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught aerobics and trampolining, which are my favourite sports and I enjoy encouraging others so they too may enjoy them as much as I do. I have also taught primary school children during work experience, these children had English as a second language and I helped them improve both their reading and writing skills as well as their confidence in their spoken English. |
Tutoring Approach: Encouragement is, in my mind, key in order to improve within any subject. Having been a student myself, I know how boring studying can get so the more fun it can be the better. I also believe that understanding something is necessary to be able to learn it, and that the simpler that something is made, the easier it is to understand. Of course, simple doesn't mean easy. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Tracey: I have been privately tutoring for over 15 years in NW Kent & SE London and have taught in excess of 300 students in that time. My degree is in Chemistry and Biology and along with my many years tuition experience I am able to deliver personal tuition in a straightforward, and relaxed way. |
Teaching Experience: I work as a Maths instructor as well as a private tutor. |
Tutoring Approach: After 15 years I still enjoy the amazing moment when a student tells me with huge relief that they get it. That is when I know the results of our hard work are paying off. Improving a student's academic performance first begins with changing their mindset. Somewhere through their academic career they were given the wrong message about their learning ability and so are still operating in a way, which leads to ultimately uncomfortable results. My job is to diagnose the problem and design the plan to set about remedying it, which will come in many different forms. When a student begins to trust and believe in me as a team we start to see significant improvements. The amount of which depends on how much the individual student is prepared to commit to consistent study. No subject is impossible to learn. I believe that by teaching with simplistic methods and a consistent study routine that is respected by the student they will obtain the optimum level of success - the sky is the limit! |

| About Peter: Apart from being a family man, who enjoys travel and playing with my son on his Wii there is not a lot to write here. |
Teaching Experience: After a career in design and commerce, I took up teaching because it is more family friendly and frankly I love the buzz I get when a lesson goes well and my students learn. I have taught for 10 years. This long enough to be familiar with the exam syllabuses and get in some examining experience. |
Tutoring Approach: Tutoring must be interactive to be successful. If all I am doing is talking at you telling you facts and processes it will not work. We all learn from a process of guidance and practice, I will help you past the problems but you will do the walking, I cannot help you if I just carry or drag you. You will also learn best if I use concepts and examples that are from activities that interest you. As a serving teacher I am used to doing this with full classes. |

| About John: I am 42 years old and have a friendly and patient personality. I have three children of my own and understand that parents sometimes need additional support for their child's learning outside of the school environment. I have a good sense of humour and enjoy making learning fun by presenting ideas in a variety of novel ways. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching for 15 years in a wide variety of Primary Schools. Within this time, I have developed subject leadership skills in maths, literacy and ICT. I have a wealth of experience in diagnosing barriers to learning and identifying clear and progressive targets to overcome these barriers. I have experience of KS2 Sats and have very up to date curriculum knowledge at the Primary School level. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that one to one tutoring can have a very significant and measurable impact on the progress of learning for a child. This is best achieved through careful initial diagnosis of areas of strengths and weaknesses, a targeted programme of work that is individualised and that, crucially, addresses those identified 'gaps' in understanding. With good ongoing reinforcement activities, realistic and professional communication with both student and parents, I firmly believe that a child's learning can be advanced by the tutoring process. Learning must be fun to be effective; I use a wide variety of teaching skills and strategies to ensure that the student feels valued, successful and finds enjoyment in learning. |

Types of Tutoring: From their home
| About Vivien: I am a friendly, outgoing mother of three, with first hand experience of dyslexia, the autistic spectrum, the statementing process and special needs schools. I am particularly passionate about music; and believe that everyone has musical potential. I play the piano, and violin, and I sing and conduct a children's and an adult choir. I have also been very involved in dramatic societies, particularly musical theatre. I'm creative; I enjoy all sorts of artistic activities, from journalling to beadwork, and painting theatre backdrops. In my spare time I am also often to be found playing darts for my local social club team! |
Teaching Experience: I qualified as a teacher in 1995, with a B.Ed(Hons)English, (2:1), from West Sussex Institute of H.E. I spent a year teaching at Corpus Christi RC Primary school in Portsmouth, where I had responsibility for music. I then moved into youthwork for the next 9 years, where I ran homework clubs, music and drama workshops, writing groups, young people's music groups, and was involved in many community drama productions. I was also very involved in pastoral care for young people. My youngest daughter was born with complex special needs, and consequently I have spent the last couple of years supporting her educationally, gaining first hand knowledge of teaching strategies. My eldest child is dyslexic, and I provided extra tuition for him at home until his GCSEs. |
Tutoring Approach: I firmly believe that learning can be, and is fun. It's important to build on what the child/young person does know, not focus on apparent 'failure to know'. I believe that education should be about the whole process, not just perceived academic success, and that we should be fostering a lifelong appetite for learning. An informal delivery style is underpinned by carefully structured planning, that includes regular assessment, so that tutor and pupil alike can be encouraged by visible progress. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Kamil: When I commenced my studies in the Teacher Training College in Toruń I decided to devote myself to it. I knew that there are thousands of people studying English and, in order to achieve more than the average, I have to do my best. Fortunately, I realized that studying English is not only interesting but also pleasing, and I have made a distinct progress. In the summer of 2006 and 2007 I worked near Birmingham and this was the time when my eagerness for continuing the studies in the UK was established. Afterwards, under the agreement with the Nicholas Copernicus University I became an extramural student of the aforementioned institution (one-year BA seminar in linguistics). Both in the Teacher Training College and at the University I always achieved very good grades. Therefore, I gained a place at Aston University of Birmingham (Ma in Translation Studies), which was a realization of my ambition. |
Teaching Experience: I had a one-year teaching practice (120 hours). I was teaching two different groups of High School students. The members of the first one were in the first year, whereas the members of the second were in their final year (preparing to pass the polish equivalent of A-levels). Their English language proficiency level was suppoused to be B2 and C1 respectively. Fortunately, these were mixed ability classes so I got the experience of dealing with the problems related to mixed-ability. Furthermore, I had to write a diploma project, in which I used the British media as a study aid and an incentive to self study. As a result, I learned how to collect and incorporate the authentic materials into the lessons of English. |
Tutoring Approach: I consider teaching to be a very complex process which is rewarding. I feel responsible for the success of my learners and gain a lot of satisfaction by watching their progress. A good teacher has to be a comic (to amuse the learners) and a policeman (to keep the discipline), a fortune-teller (to predict what they want and anticipate problems before they arise) and a good observer of what is happening in the classrom. I aim to be a good teacher. |

I do assess my students to know what aspects of maths they need to improve to meet their targets. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Rokhsana: I have recently completed a four year degree in French at Bristol University and am currently seeking to involve myself in my passion for teaching. As you can see below, I have much experience in this field which has confirmed to me that teaching is the path I would like to pursue. |
Teaching Experience: My teaching experience begun in 2005 when I joined the Bristol based tutor company 3A Tutors LTD. Via this company, I gave private tuition to a mature student with dyslexia. Teaching an illiterate adult to read and write was a hugely demanding task. Since those with dyslexia have great difficulty in acquiring such skills, this role required much patience, persistence and sensitivity. Subsequently from October 2006 - May 2007, I took part in a scheme organised by the British Council working as an English language assistant in two secondary schools and one college in the South East of France. I would lead, alone, classes of approximately 20 students aged between 11 and 20. In order to capture and maintain the attention of such a large group of youngsters I had to ensure that my teaching technique was engaging and lively. During my stay in France, I undertook a fair amount of private tuition teaching French youngsters to improve their English. Furthermore, I took on the challenging task of teaching a youth French rugby team to learn English. |
Tutoring Approach: I understand that in order to teach a student of any age range successfully, the key is to engage him /her fully. The student's attention must be captured and maintained. In order to achieve this feat, my teaching technique is lively, enthusiastic and innovative. However, in spite of this approach, I believe that one must not forget the key responsibility of educating and expanding the knowledge of the student. In other words, a lively approach in teaching important and serious material is the key to success. |
