| About Andrea: I am 32 years old. I have been teaching in the UK for 8 years, but my original qualifications are from the University of Western Australia. I have been awarded QTS in the UK and am currently studying my MA in Education: Leading Innovation and Change. I am particularly interested in raising the achievement and attainment of disaffected boys in English. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching in the UK for 8 years, and 2 years in Australia. I held the position of Head of English at a London comprehensive school for 5 years. I am also an examiner for AQA GCSE English Literature. I received an 'outstanding' grade for an A level Literature lesson during a recent Ofsted. |
Tutoring Approach: I am a very patient teacher and have a good relationship with my students. Much of the work will involve discussion, particularly with regards to Literature, and developing thought processes which is beneficial for a long term understanding of the ways language and literature give us a better understanding of the social world. | About Ciaran: I have recently graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a First Class degree in Mathematics, achieving an average of 87% in my finals. I am now starting two years of postgraduate study at the London School of Economics. |
Teaching Experience: In my final years at university I undertook informal tutoring of first year Maths students on a one to one basis. This experience has allowed me to develop a clear and concise way of explaining key concepts in an engaging way. |
Tutoring Approach: I try to tutor in a dynamic way so that my pupil is engaged and motivated. Tuition is much more productive when the pupil is fully involved and partaking in the lesson. A good tutor also understands that what seems obvious to them may, at first, be very difficult for their pupil, and so must know when to stop and repeat something or allow the pupil time to think about something. |

| About Renée: Hello There. I have recently graduated with Linguistics and Italian. Linguistics is "the scientific and humanistic study of language and literature". (This includes phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics.) I think this has enabled me to have a good grasp of the English Language! I am currently working towards my Cambridge CELTA Qualification, which will enable me to teach English to Foreigners. I think one of the most important gifts we can give ourselves is Foreign Language. I love nothing more than travelling abroad and being able to interact with the locals in their language. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked in A Primary School, helping children between the ages of 4-11 with their English reading and writing skills. I have also tutored Students working towards their Italian GCSE. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to Tutoring differs from student to student. The way I teach a 7 year old will be completely different to to way I teach a 16 year old! Every individual is different, so I adapt my teaching method to suit them depending on their level. I try to make the way I teach fun; in the sense that they enjoy the lesson as opposed to dreading it! |

| About Mira: I have recently graduated from my second degree and am now looking to further my teaching experience with some intention to return to academia. Tutoring Approach: I think the most important thing for any student to be able to do is ask questions. I make it a point to instill courage and confidence in my tutees because in my opinion these are the building blocks of learning, in any subject. My sessions tend to be relaxed and informal, though I aim to cover much ground per tutorial. The intensity of study can be decided by the student according to his or her needs, experience and age. Above all I think learning should be fun and liberating. From my experience both as a student and tutor I think I make an able, friendly and enthusiastic tutor. |

| About Luciano: I am a professional drummer/percussionist who has been teaching and performing in the UK, Europe, and America for the last twenty years. My musical experience is in styles that range from Jazz, Pop, Rock, African, Reggae, Experimental, Ethnic, Hip Hop, Funk and others. I play and teach both drum kit and African hand and stick drums. I work with many different contemporary groups in the UK and also America. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught privately throughout my career. I also teach adults in the in team building exercises with business both big and small. I teach one and one and also in groups depending on the requirements of the situation. |
Tutoring Approach: My teaching methods are molded to the individual. The constants for all students are basic skills such as rudiments, strength building, coordination, time keeping, listening, independence and posture. Beyond that I always begin with students by discussing what they want from their drumming. What music they like, what music they would like to play, and how great their ambition may be. I then proceed to tailor lessons to their needs. With children I keep the same approach but emphasise the need to explore a wide range of styles to ensure a good grounding and musical flexibility. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Melanie Alexandra: I have a British mother and a Spanish father, grew up in Spain and went to a British International school from the age of 3 to the age of 17. I began my Mechanical Engineering BEng at Cardiff University in September 2006 at the age of 17. I am fluent in English and Spanish (they are both my native languages,) and can speak German fairly well. I am friendly and sociably, but not loud and desruptive, and live in a tidy welcoming flat with my partner, neither of us smoke. |
Teaching Experience: August 2003 (1 month) - Tutored and minded a 6 year old Spanish boy. I spent 3 hours 3 times a week with him looking after him and at the same time teaching him English through talking and playing games. January to June 2004 - Tutored two sisters (aged 8 and 10) after school, 2 hours a week. Helped them with their English, Maths, Science, and all other homework. July 2004 - Teacher's assistant at a Summer School, helped with English, Maths and IT August 2004 - Tutored and minded same boy as the year before, now 7 (6 hours a week) September 2005 to June 2006 - Tutored an 11 year old boy (3 hours a week) - English and Maths July and August 2006 - Tutored and minded an 11 year old boy (a sort of one-to-one summer school from 9.30-14.30) playing with him and also spending an hour and a half on Maths and an hour and a half on English. |
Tutoring Approach: I will help the child reach the answer themselves instead of telling them the answer outright, so they can do it on their own in the future. I will never belittle a child, and will listen to them if they want to tell me about something else, although I make it clear that I am there for us to learn, not for a chat! I like to prepare the class, so preferrably I would have an overview of their syllabus before class, so I can prepare at home. If it is just to help them with specific problems and topics then I am happy to just turn up and help them out with their questions, homework, or whatever you think they need the most help on. I am always punctual, or, most likely, early, since I like to sit down and start at the agreed time. I will not leap out of my chair as soon as the time is up if we are in middle of a problem or there are a few questions left to do that would benefit the child. I will genuinely care for the child, and not regard the time spent with him/her as simply an extra job to earn a bit of cash! |

| About Assal: I have been teaching law for over one year. I enjoy teaching as a hobby, as I have spent most of my adult life in education at university studying law. During my A levels, I developed a keen interest in English Literature & Mathematics but ultimately I decided to study Law at university. I hope that through teaching, I can encourage my tutees to take the same interest in education that my teachers taught me to take at school. When I am not teaching, I write articles for various university journals. I have over two years employment experience in the legal sector & I work as a Court Clerk for various law firms in London. |
Teaching Experience: Over one years experience in teaching Law & LPC. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to keep things simple and easy to understand. I am a patient person & I like to bring out the best in my tutees. I understand that learning takes time & I think it's important to allow tutees to take their time and to learn through asking questions. Everyone is different; some tutees prefer to learn through reading whilst others like to practice answering exam questions, some of my tutees prefer to draw mind maps to aid their memory. In any case, I am able to adapt confidently to any approach that my tutee(s) prefer(s). |

| About Oliver: I am a professional physicist, working to commercially develop new research microscope technology. I am passionate about spreading interest in physics and maths, and good understanding of physics principles. I believe that physics is not as hard as people generally think it is. My favourite physics subjects are materials properties, electricity and magnetism, optics and astronomy. I have a young family and enjoy music with them and friends; I play violin and piano. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught A-level, GCSE and degree-level physics to students in 1-to-1 and small group tutorials, privately and employed by London and Durham Universities as a post-graduate tutor. I have taught maths-for-chemists at degree level in small groups, and GCSE maths in 1-to-1 tutorials. I have led astronomy teaching sessions with small school-age groups, with a mixture of practical observation and introduction to astronomy and optics. I have worked with three local East Grinstead schools and my employer to organise and lead school-group visits (teacher-assisted) to industrial physics research labs. This introduced commercially relevant use of physics principles and experiments: baloons and liquid nitrogen, prisms, microphones, vacuum, cameras, microscopes... |
Tutoring Approach: Preparation / 1-off: (1) Put the student at ease and make them feel the time should be about what they want to learn and kept enjoyable (2) Find out what the student wants to learn and where they want to get to: suggest ideas if none forthcoming. Do research on what's required and what would be interesting. (3) Adjust the material to be covered to suit the tutorial and 'homework' time available. (4) Divide the agreed 'syllabus' up into points to cover in each tutorial. Repeat: (5) In each session go over what the student has previously learnt, introduce a new concept and try several examples of how the new material is applied. (6) Check feedback from student on how comfortable they are with the new material (7) Set self-study work if agreed required / wanted (8) Review progress against planned division of material in each tutorial |

| About David: I have just finished my Second Year of French Studies at The University of Warwick, I have gotten Firsts in Medieval and Translation modules. I am twenty years old and have teaching experience with all ages and abilities, I am friendly, smart, well-presented, polite, and very encouraging of any student. I plan to become a teacher after graduation, and this would be useful experience for me towards this. |
Teaching Experience: I have not long finished the Student Associate Scheme through Warwick University, where I was given teacher training sessions and taught in a local Secondary School. I began by observing lessons alongside teacher training sessions, and later prepared and delivered my own starter activities before teaching whole French lessons to Years 7 and 8. Also, during this scheme I took intensive language classes for GCSE oral preparation, as well as being an assistant teacher in GCSE Science lessons and the Special Needs Department. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is based around the student, what I plan to do will be to support what the school has already done, reenforce prior knowledge of the subject by going more in depth on a one-to-one basis than could be achieved in school lessons. When I am confident that the student has a very strong knowledge of the foundations of the subject I plan to take them one step further and no more, otherwise I will cause the student to lose interest in school time, which will undo any progress that has been made. My approach is very active, I like to use lots of different techniques, and try to incorporate visual, oral and kinaesthetic learning techniques into my teaching. Obviously I will focus on the technique which the student finds most effective, however, this does not stop me using a variety of techniques meaning that their memory of what has been taught is reenforced in many different ways. |

| About James: I'm a finalist (4th year) at Royal Holloway University of London studying French and German. I have just spent the past year in Dijon and Heidelberg, so I am in touch with the respective societies and cultures. |
Teaching Experience: I have not taught yet, as I am still an undergraduate, but I have helped students previously while studying at a grammar school. My past year studying in France and Germany has seen me in contact with students and lecturers from all over Europe, so I feel I am understanding the importance of education. |
Tutoring Approach: I am happy to approach the teaching, as the tutee wishes. The atmosphere will be relaxed and there is no pressure to overload the tutee, but rather to find the right balance between understanding the languages and building a sound knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. I'm happy to address any specific issues, or start from scratch or I can suggest topics myself, which I consider beneficial. |

| About melanie: I am French and I am 21. I studied English at university in France.Indeed, I passed my degree in English last june and during my third year , the university proposed the students to go to England as language assistants.I thought it was a very good idea and that it would be a wonderful experience. That is why i am working now as a French assistant in primary schools. I arrived in october and i really enjoyed both my job and the place I live in.The area is really beautiful. I would like to stay next year and to come back after to France to study advertising and have a master. Maybe later i will come back and do a PGCE to become a French teacher in England. |
Teaching Experience: -In france i used to give English private lessons to children( 6 months before i came to England) -I have been a French language assistant in England since october. -I have been giving private French lessons to an adult since november. -I was a rythmic gymnastic teacher for young girls in France during 5 years so it is another good teaching experience with children |
Tutoring Approach: use different approaches whether i tutor children or adults. With children it is good to use the approach "learning through playing" using games.. Children get bored really quickly so if a lesson is lively and dynamic the pupil doesn't really have the impression that he is "working"hard. Moreover, I know that to have a good sense of humor helps wheter the learner is a child or an adult. I can adapt my lessons according to the learner. I can teach any level and i am interested in teaching every level because it is good to have experince in different level. |

| About Alan: I recently graduated from Heriot Watt with a Masters degree in Physics. I studied both Chemistry and Biology during my time at university, alongside my main subjects of Physics and Maths. I am planning on returning to university next year to get my PGDE (teaching qualification). |
Teaching Experience: I have no formal teaching/tutoring experience, but over the last few years I have spent a lot of time assisting many of my classmates with their studies. I have a very good understanding of my subject and have had plenty of practice explaining complicated ideas in an easily digestible manner. |
