About Max:
Seeing the look on the faces of others as they have achieved their goals with my support and assistance has given me some of my greatest feelings of success in my life. Over the past several years I have given hundreds if not thousands of hours of training, coaching and mentoring. I have taught English and business related subjects to a wide range of people from teenagers to company directors, from beginning English speakers to others seeking entrance to university.

Teaching Experience:

I am a recently retired Director of Studies at an English language school. I have given private tuition to a number of students with excellent results and testimonials from clients are available for inspection. I have taught English from Primary level up to Cambridge entrance exam level (this was for non native English speakers). My students have ranged from teenagers to company directors.

I also have years of experience in coaching and mentoring business people on a one-to-one basis and as part of company sponsored schemes

Tutoring Approach:

If you are interested in a tutor with excellent experience of teaching with a caring, supportive approach, then please contact me. My aim is to raise the achievements of my students beyond their own expectations with challenging and rewarding lessons.
My approach, although focussed and committed, is innovative and exploratory and I've found that these elements reinforce learning. At the same time I am passionate about encouraging that all-important sense of self-belief. Not only is it is a major component of examination success, it is a valuable attitude to take forward for life.

About Alex:
I graduated from the London School of Economics with a degree in International Relations. I am currently a masters student at Kings College London reading War Studies. Alongside studying, I am a full-time fencer, and represent the UK in foil at the highest international level. I am a level 3 Commando Krav Maga instructor, and a registered British Combat Association self-defense instructor. My favourite hobby is playing jazz piano.

Tutoring Approach:

I dont believe there is a one-size-fits-all approach to tutoring. Everyone is different, and different people need different approaches to make the most out of their learning experience. The key is to find the right approach for each person.

About Zack:
I am now an undergraduate in University of Oxford reading Mathematics and Statistics. I am comfortable with teaching Mathematics up to A levels and especially keen in training students for Maths Olympiad. I have first hand experience when it comes to dealing with primary school Maths Olympiad as I was one of the 8 representatives of Malaysia to participate in the 5th Primary Mathematics World Contest held in Hong Kong. Besides, I also won the individual third place for the Asia Pacific Maths Olympiad for Primary Schools conducted in Singapore.

Chinese/Mandarin is my native language and I have been studying it for more than 12 years. I have a strong command of both written and spoken Mandarin. I will be glad to teach this subject whether in writing or speaking.

Teaching Experience:

I started teaching when I was studying for my A levels. I was a personal tutor of a 14-year old student in Chinese/Mandarin and Sciences from February 2007 to October 2007. After finishing my A levels in November 2007, I took up a job at an education centre in Singapore as a Maths Olympiad Projects Assistant and Trainer. Within this 7 months, I was heavily involved in conducting lesson groups and workshops for Maths Olympiad all over Singapore as well as writing training materials for the students.

Tutoring Approach:

For mathematics and sciences, I will be helping the student to understand and grasp the concepts instead of practicing rote learning. More time will be spent on solving problems for mathematics.

For Chinese/Mandarin, the teaching approach can be flexible to suit the students needs.

About Claire:
I'm young I enjoy life, I love all types of music, the cinema and I enjoy reading. I get on well with people of all ages and backgrounds and absolutely love teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I'm a fully qualified CELTA teacher with ESOL experience of teaching both adults and teenagers from beginner level to advanced.
I have taught full time at a summer school for Italian teenagers which was excellent and I now feel confident teaching teenagers and young people.
I have also taught one to one and found this incredibly rewarding as you see a marked difference in the student's ability.
Currently I am a supply teacher for a language school in York, and although the work is sporadic I enjoy it immensely.

Tutoring Approach:

In my past experiences as a tutor I have found that every student works and wants to learn English differently. Primarily you are there for the student and should always find a way of teaching that suits them. Some of my past students have wanted 30 minutes a day some have wanted seven hours a day. They also may wish to use different resources, for example media or literature, or they may wish to follow a text book. Because of this I always make sure that in our first meeting I ascertain their needs so we can work together well as a team.
I maintain a well balanced student teacher relationship but do feel that because they are one to one lessons you do forge a bond with the student that you wouldn't necessarily forge in a classroom situation.

About Sarah:
I am a 26 year old woman, who has been teaching for four years at St Hilda's C of E High School. I have wanted to teach since I was 4 years old and love working with children. I have a very calm personality and am very patient. I have taught pupils of all abilities and have previously tutored EAL pupils.
I am taking a year out from teaching next year to give me the freedom to pursue other avenues, but would like to continue tutoring during this period.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience in teaching mathematics to 11-18 year old pupils. I have taught the following A-level modules;
-Edexcel C1, C2, C3, M1, M2
-OCR M1, M2
-MEI D1
I have taught both foundation and higher GCSE and am the first teacher at the school to have pupils in set 5 achieve a C grade

Tutoring Approach:

I feel that praise is the key to learning. Many pupils lack confidence in mathematics and if I can give them confidence in their tutoring sessions the rest can fall into place. My aim is to create a relaxed environment, where the pupil feels ok about making mistakes, so mistakes get rectified and then progress is made.

About Toby:
I'm a professional musician in the centre of York.

Teaching Experience:

Over the past few years, I've trained adults and young people in music, specifically choral singing. For three years I ran York's youth choir, and I now run an adult chamber choir and act as guest conductor for another. I also teach classical guitar and music theory privately, including recent experience with both children and adults, and I'm familiar with KS3 and GCSE syllabuses as well as ABRSM and Trinity theory grades.

I have a website which outlines my experience in more detail, but I'm not allowed to include the link in this profile. Drop me a line if you want to know more.

Tutoring Approach:

I adopt a straightforward, friendly approach to tutoring. I'm always careful to define what exactly it is you want to get out of tutoring before we start, whether it be generally improving your musicality or working towards a particular qualification.

I'm flexible regarding timings - I understand that people have busy lives - so I generally don't charge for missed lessons.

I've never tried online tutoring but I'm happy to give it a go!

About Jan:
A recent graduate with a passion for sciences, who enjoys Friendly and easy going, I am a good communicator with pleantly of patience and enthusiasm.

Teaching Experience:

Helped several students pass GCSE maths when I had left school.

Tutoring Approach:

Although it is important to go at a pace suitable for the student, it is also necessary to set deadlines for mastery of elements of the subject. these deadlines should be agreed between student and tutor so that a clear path of achievement can be planned. For science subjects such as maths and chemistry, it is important to relate the sometimes abstract concepts to real life through examples and analogies.

Subjects: Spanish  |  English (Foreign Language)  |  English
Availability: Weekdays (evenings)
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you

About Sam:
After completing my Degree in English two years ago, I moved to Spain to teach English to all ages in an academy. After spending almost a year there I learnt Spanish well. Currently I am a warehouse manager in Portsmouth but am looking to relocate to Brighton. I am easy going and enjoy a whole range of sports and activities.

Teaching Experience:

Between September 2006 and July 2007 I was a qualified TEFL teacher in an academy in Spain. My classes were all a variety of ages from as young as ten through to adults, I learnt how to approach teaching from lots of different perspectives. It was a full time position and included giving extra tuition for students (in their homes often) who needed preparation for Important exams (FCE, CAE).

Tutoring Approach:

Younger students should be kept alert and interested by changing activities more frequently, the target knowledge should be elicited from them rather than forced out. It is important to try and find something that they can relate to in the material. Adults should be consulted beforehand to see exactly what they want out of the class.

Subjects: Geography
Availability: Weekdays (evenings)
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online

About Lisa:
I currently teach KS3, GCSE and A-level Geography at St Philomena's School in Carshalton. I successfully completed my PGCE with Goldsmiths University last year. I have studied Geography at GCSE, A-Level and at Nottingham University, where I achieved a 2:1. I have a great deal of enthusiasm for Geography and feel that I can instill this in others. Moreover, I believe that by inspiring pupils, this will motivate them to achieve their potential.

Teaching Experience:

Before teaching at St Philomena's I had placements in Riddlesdown High School and Elliot School, where I was able to teach Geography to pupils aged between 11-18. Prior to this, I have also worked in activity camps, where I carried out sports and arts and crafts activities with children aged 5-11. I feel that my wide variety of teaching experiences enables me to find ways to interact with children from a diverse range of backgrounds and with very different learning styles.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that learning should be enjoyable. Where possible, I use a variety of teaching methods to cater for all learning styles, enthuse and enable pupils to work to their full potential. Pupils should gain confidence and fully understand the aims and objectives of their work, as well as how to apply it. At GCSE in particular, I think it is important to find ways of condensing information, in order to make revision more manageable.

Subjects: German
Availability: Weekdays
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online

About Heather:
I am a student at the University of Reading taking a year out before completing my degree in Philosophy and German who would love to keep in practice with my langauge, while sharing my knowledge and enjoyment of learning and speaking.

Teaching Experience:

I was an English assistant in a school and did private tutoring in Germany from September last year until May this year. In June I gained experience at an English school through the Student Associates Scheme at Reading university, observing and part teaching German lessons.

Tutoring Approach:

In Germany I would aid students with there homework, thus following their textbooks or contuining work from lessons. In the school I would often prepare my own tasks for students I took in groups outside of the lessons, often playing games or setting tasks to keep them interested. It would depend on the parent and student and the level they are at how would be best to help them and in this respect I am flexible and easy going. I am happy to take each meeting as it comes and plan the next one based on the previous, hopefully improving each time what works best and finding new ideas the student likes.
